A restaurant owned by a former cop was targeted last week in Rural Belize. Businessman, Delroy Moore Sr., was inside MD’s Restaurant in Ladyville Village when he was alerted that his employee, stationed at the takeout section of the restaurant, was being held up at gunpoint. Moore rushed to the area but was unable to stop the lone robber from making good his escape.

Chapter One: Fresh From Belize
The car hit a bump in the road, and Jason took a sharp inhale, removing his glasses. He ran a hand over his face, staring out the window at the foggy city. “How long ya visitin’ for?” the driver questioned.
“I live here,” Jason mumbled as he checked the time on his phone. “I’ve been abroad for the past five years.”
“Oh yeah?” the driver questioned. “Where’d you go?”
“Costa Rica, Madagascar, Italy… You name it,” Jason answered, “I fished for a few months in Iceland, worked in a restaurant in Northern Italy, and taught a salsa class in Japan.”
“Sounds like you lived a full life,” the driver replied. Jason nodded.
The air smelled the same. Piss, water, and chemicals. Jason wrinkled his nose. “You got a home to go to?” the driver questioned as he pulled in front of the Gotham library. It was a four-story building as ornate as it was tall. Its stained glass windows, large doorways, and a garden that seemed unphased by time itself.
“Unfortunately, yes… Thanks for the ride,” Jason replied as he unbuckled his seatbelt. “You mind popping the trunk for me?”
The driver popped the trunk, and Jason stepped out, grabbed his bag, and thanked the man for picking him up from the airport. Stretching his arms and legs as he entered the library, he took his glasses from his pocket, pushing them up the bridge of his nose. Jason hadn’t told anyone he was back in Gotham. Not that he expected a warm welcome. Bruce stood in the children’s area, mingling with parents over hot cocoa and cookies. He wore a turtleneck and almost looked like a family man. Almost… If he hadn’t been flirting with one of the single mothers in the group. Jason scoffed as he attempted to sneak past the front desk to the staircase. He nearly made it to the staircase before Bruce sped over. “Jason? Is that you?” Bruce questioned. Jason stopped in his tracks, his back turned to his father as he nodded solemnly.
“Can I get settled in upstairs before we fight?” Jason mumbled. Bruce grabbed his arm.
“I don’t wanna fight, Jason… Can we-? Do you wanna talk?” Bruce asked. “Where’ve you been?”
Jason sighed. “Can’t we skip the niceties and fight, so I could finish unpacking and get something to eat?” Jason questioned. Bruce held on. “Okay... We can talk, but I’m gonna unpack and order in.”
“Okay,” Bruce replied, following him to the fourth floor. “Nobody’s lived here in over a year… So, it might be a little-.” Jason knocked on the bricks in the wall until he found the loose one. He pulled it out and took the key to unlock the door.
“I bet you didn’t change anything… You even kept the key in the same-.” Jason turned the light on, and his heart dropped into his stomach. “What the fuck is this?”
Jason walked straight toward the pegboard in the center of the room. “Jason, I needed to know you weren’t-. I-.”
“I sent a postcard on your birthday,” Jason interrupted as he took the sticky notes off the board.
“Once,” Bruce replied through clenched teeth.
Jason took his backpack off and set his things nicely on the table. A silk cloth, a toothbrush, a bar of soap, a hairbrush, a new box of toothpaste, a pocket-sized journal, a pen, and a portable cassette player. “Cool, so are we fighting now?” Jason snapped. Bruce shook his head.
“I missed you… For half a decade, I agonized over your loss-.”
Jason pulled a single pair of pajamas from his bag. “I ran out on you… I didn’t die. Don’t think I could’ve made that clearer in the postcard,” Jason mumbled.
Bruce sat in the easy chair, staring at him. “You’re parting your hair there again,” Bruce whispered, “Like when you were a little boy-.”
“Uh-huh… Well… I’m not a little boy, Bruce. Does the phone up here still work?” Jason questioned. Bruce nodded. Jason stood up and grabbed the house phone from the kitchen. He stood at the kitchen island, dragging the numbers in the old rotary phone.
“Welcome to Pretty Pauletta’s, where the pizza’s always perfect and the party never stops. Can I take your order?” a woman answered.
“Uh, yeah… Can I get the special with everything on it, a side of fries and a Coke?” Jason replied.
“Diet? Cherry-?”
“Regular, thanks… Bruce, do you want something?” Jason asked casually without making eye contact.
“No, thank you, Jason,” Bruce whispered. Jason could hear the defeat in Bruce’s voice. It wouldn’t be long before Bruce walked out. Jason recited his payment information and thanked the woman before hanging up. “Where did you come from?”
“Belize. I was only there for a few months,” Jason replied.
Bruce nodded, staring intently at Jason. "You look good," Bruce complimented, "You've got color in your cheeks again…"
"Did I ever have any color in my cheeks here?" Jason asked. Bruce chewed his lip. "Are you gonna have a problem with me staying up here?"
"On the contrary, I want you to stay… On one condition," Bruce replied.
"I don't give a shit about this library, Bruce-."
"You work here, and I'll let you live here for free as long as you like. And I'll unfreeze your trust fund-."
"I don't give a shit about my trust fund," Jason interrupted as he hung his jacket up. "There's nothing you could say to convince me to work-."
"I won't call or visit unless you ask me to," Bruce replied. Jason screwed up his face. "Do we have a deal?"
"Not so much as a pleasant hello?" Jason asked. Bruce shook his head. "Fine." Bruce shook his hand. "Deal starts tomorrow. You look like you've got questions." It was his attempt at being cordial.
“Why’d you come back?” Bruce questioned.
“I don’t know… I got stabbed in Belize, and somewhere in between the two weeks I spent in some random hospital fighting infection and coming home to find out a water pipe burst in my apartment, and I was fired from my job while at the hospital,” Jason answered. “I don’t think I’ll stay, though.”
“How long were you in Belize?” Bruce asked.
Jason opened the cabinets. “A few months,” Jason replied, “Three. Maybe four…”
“TV works… Sometimes I come up here to watch the news,” Bruce mumbled. Jason turned the tv on.
Bruce leaned forward and ran a hand through his hair. Jason couldn’t relax to sit down, so he unpacked his suitcase. After ten minutes of uninterrupted silence, someone rang the doorbell. “Sure, you don’t want any pizza?” Jason questioned. Bruce shook his head. Jason tipped the delivery man and took his food to the coffee table.
“Why didn’t you call home when you got stabbed?” Bruce questioned.
Jason shrugged as he ate. “It wasn’t the worst thing that’s happened to me in five years,” Jason replied, “I hope you don’t mind. I haven’t eaten since yesterday.” He devoured his pizza and fries before tidying up.
“I should let you get to sleep,” Bruce whispered. Jason nodded. Bruce stood up and reached to mess up Jason’s hair. Jason flinched away. “Right… Goodbye, Jason.”
“Bye, Bruce,” Jason replied. Bruce let himself out, and Jason hid his face in his hands. “I shouldn’t have come here...”
He allowed himself to breathe before unfolding a blanket from the linen closet and setting up a hammock in the corner of the living room. After his shower, he curled up in his hammock and let the gentle rocking of the hammock lull him to sleep.

This Week’s Horrible-Scopes
It’s time for this week’s Horrible-Scopes! So for those of you that know your Astrological Signs, cool! If not, just pick one, roll a D12, or just make it up as you go along. It really doesn’t matter. Better yet! Check out “Heart of the Game, Fredonia” and see if they can sell you those D12’s with the symbols on them. Tell them “Shujin Tribble” sentcha. And “Hail, Hail, Fredonia!” Home of the Blue Devil!
Summer is right around the corner, so it’s time to start making your vacation plans. And we’re JUST the place to help you decide what to do and where to go. So get out your debit cards and get ready to plan your hotel stays. Remember, there’s a 30% Restocking Fee for any cancelled bookings. The Horrible-Scopes will not be responsible for any accidents, either mid-air or on the ground, to anyone using Ryan Air.
Aries
We’re suggesting you plan your vacation to Costa Rica. It’s relatively easy to get to from the USA and Canada, has reasonable prices, ridiculously clean beaches, and the locals are friendly. What’s not to love about this choice? So This Week… Make sure you book a visit to the Cloud Forest in Monteverde. It’s totally a magical experience!
Taurus
Where Aries went with a reasonable price tag, we’re sending you off an expensive one. Even booking through Costco you’ll be paying about $8,000 for 5 nights - but that puts you in an overwater bungalow, all meals, all flights and taxi to/from the airport - and the destination? Bora Bora! So This Week… Your high school-level French won’t be needed for this trip, but we suggest a hard hat. You’ve heard of Australian Drop Bears? How about Bora Boran Drop Coconuts? That can be a thing.
Gemini
Speaking of the Australian area of the globe, we’re sending you Fiji. No, they do not make Fiji-Brand Water there. But speaking of, bring a good camera with you because you’ll want to remember the water there to swim in. Just amazingly blue and warm water and you’ll enjoy every minute of it. So This Week… When you plan your vacation, just avoid Denarau Island. That’s where you’ll find the largest concentration of Australian Bogans visiting. If you don’t know what that term means, just ask an Ozzie - they’ll explain.
Cancer Moon-Child
We’ll make this one super straight-forward: Iceland! Try to imagine visiting a country that’s incredibly safe, welcoming, chilly, but built like it’s just one giant national park. It’ll be a great visit with a better-than-average chance to see the Northern Lights at night. So This Week… There is an incredible and authentic Ethiopian restaurant in Fludir, run by an Icelandic man and his Ethiopian wife. Some of the best food and coffee. You HAVE to get there and check it out!
Leo
Fancy taking a trip to the European mainland? Don’t care - we’re sending you to Spain. It doesn't get much hype but it promises sun, sand, cheap beer, cheap food, and it delivers 100% of the time… on the experience, not delivering food to you. If you want to stay away from the British and German tourists, plan on visiting the Basque region. It's a little more akin to the Pacific Northwest in the US, with a nice cool climate, still with stellar food. So This Week… You likely didn’t learn Castilian Spanish, so you might be treated with kid gloves if you try to speak Spanish to the natives. At least they’ll respect the effort.
Virgo
Some have suggested this location and it’s stirred up a nasty hornet’s nest of opinions. We’re suggesting you go to… OHIO! Now, yes. Ohio’s birthed a number of people who have gone on to intentionally leave the planet for space, but that’s not exactly a bad point. It could be said that they were simply looking for somewhere more exciting than Ohio, and not finding it on the planet, looked elsewhere. So This Week… Order a bottle of Loganberry Syrup to get your taste buds ready for a week at Cedar Point. You’re Welcome.
Libra
Plan on getting SCUBA Certified because you’ll need it as you head off to Belize! We’re going to remind you to research “the Blue Hole” so you can stay away from it, but this will be an awesome underwater experience! Imagine what it’ll be like to swim with stingray, small sharks, lots and lots of fish, and even eels that you can touch! Nothing will come close to that first dive with your instructor. So This Week… Always fall backwards out of the boat when you’re going SCUBA Diving. Because if you go the other way your facemask will hit the floor of the boat.
Scorpio
Here’s a sleeper hit for you - and you best not go bragging about it to anyone: Northern Michigan. Giant sand dunes, beautiful bays, the Great Lakes, Mackinac Island… It’s like a different country compared to the rest of Michigan. The woodsy lake vibes with all the waterfalls are truly amazing. So This Week… Just remember that you are right next door to Ontario, Canada up there. Do NOT annoy the local bird life.
Sagittarius
You’ll likely need a translator to help you out at times, but you’re slated to head out to Edinburgh, Scotland. Do your research and look up all the touristy places and stay way the hell away from them. You may love bagpipe music, but by the third day of hearing it incessantly, you WILL want to lance someone through the chest with a Claymore. So This Week… buy new socks and cushioned insoles for your shoes. Since EVERYTHING is uphill from there you WILL need them.
Capricorn
We’re sending you WAY up north to Juneau, Alaska. The wilderness is amazing to walk or trudge through, depending on what time of year it is and the weather. But even beyond the daylight hours, you’ll have an amazing view of the night skies - and again, a better-than-average chance of seeing the Northern Lights. So This Week… Make sure your passport is valid because if you want to head to Anchorage, that’s a 925Km (574Mile) straight-line distance, but that’s a 19 HOUR DRIVE! Do NOT run out of fuel on the drive!
Aquarius
We’ll suggest you consider Maui. Both the location and the animated character as voiced by Dwayne Johnson. We’re pretty sure most of you would LOVE to visit either one for various reasons. So This Week… Don’t even THINK about getting Maori tattoos on your body. They are painful and you WILL regret even trying.
Pisces
You will be getting the best vacation location. No, seriously.. This is the vacation everyone else on this list is going to be asking to trade with you for. (*Grand Pause*) Grandma's house. Just Picture It - Cartoons & Silver dollar pancakes any time you want them, homemade spaghetti & meatballs, and fresh baked cookies before bed. So This Week… We’re not crying! You’re Crying! Shut up!
And THOSE are your Horrible-Scopes for this week! Remember if you liked what you got, we’re obviously not working hard enough at these. BUT! If you want a better or nastier one for your own sign or someone else’s, all you need to do to bribe me is just Let Me Know - or check out the Ko-Fi page ( https://ko-fi.com/icarusthelunarguard )! These will be posted online at the end of each week via Tumblr, Twitter, Facebook, Discord, and BLUESKY.

Love is swinging on the hammock above the water in Belize, it’s the taste of rum punch as you sit alone at the bar, it’s the sweet innocent eyes of the dogs at the shelter, and the cool ocean as you swim in the orange tinted water of the sunset. Love is a sweet smile to the boy who you just met, it’s your brown skin in the middle of summer, and the the bubbles blown from a 99 cent container. Love is the feeling of getting out of the pool and wrapping yourself in a blue striped towel, it’s rolling a blunt in the park with your high school crush, and the thrill of walking the Golden Gate Bridge for the first time. Love is chartering a yacht with your best friend and cruising the bay, it’s pulling off the side of the road to watch the horses run freely in the field, and being alone in Mexico drinking piña coladas. Love is spending New Year’s Eve alone in a foreign country and being okay with it, it’s walking down the cobble stone streets of Sayulita with an ice cream cone in hand, and taking too many Mezcal shots at the beach and meeting your soulmate. Love is holding puppies, it’s hiking to waterfalls in Africa, and sharing a monumental moment with a stranger. Love is going an a safari alone, it’s stopping for a photo on a staircase in Stonetown, and drinking a cup of coffee on a rooftop in the Indian Ocean. Love is swimming with turtles in Nungwi, it’s a fresh coconut on a traditional Dhow, and sipping martinis with the owner of the hostel you’re staying at. Love is lounging on the beach of Paje, it’s getting into a water taxi to cross Lake Atitlan, and taking an outdoor shower in the middle of the jungle. Love is picking out flowers for yourself in Chichicastenango, it’s a close up of you in the limestone river of Semuc Champey, and you swimming in the blue water at Lanikai. Love is a hug with a horse in the stables, it’s admiring your body for all that it is, and getting boozy at lunch on a Thursday at the best pasta restaurant in San Jose. Love is taking photos of yourself on a vacation after you quit your job, it’s falling in love with your surf instructor you met on the beach, and spending time on your balcony. Love is enjoying dinners alone, it’s getting dressed up for no reason, and jumping on the back of a motorcycle with some guy you met in Zanzibar at 1am. Love is blowing out the birthday candles on your restaurant dessert, it’s the bottom your jeans soaking wet while running away from the crashing ocean waves, it’s having a pool party alone. Love is coming back to yourself, it’s colorful, it’s worth it, and it’s all yours.

I went to Belize some years back and people just sell food everywhere there, too. Went to a national park and got the best tacos I've ever tasted, made by someone's grandma just sitting on the sidewalk with a cooler full of 'em, 4 for two American dollars. On a trip to another park, our driver stopped at a stall some guy had built outside his house, full of pineapples. To this day, that's the next fucking pineapple I've ever had, and it cost 50 cents. And I came home to a country without people selling food in interesting places and realized just what I was missing. Yeah, it's cool to go into a restaurant and get pasta. But what if I really want a peach while I'm driving down I75? You really expect me to pull off the highway for that shit? Fuck off!
But also what I'm realizing here is I can never go to China because I'll come home with that same sadness I did when I left Belize.
my sister and I both agree that one of the best parts about china was how there's food everywhere. And not just, like, bags of chips, but real hot, cooked, tasty food. You hike to the top of a mountain and there's a guy with a cart selling chicken skewers and freshly steamed corn on the cob. When you hike to the top of a mountain in america, what do you get? Nothing. An uninterrupted view of nature. Where did we go wrong as a country
#food stall runners are my heroes tbh#maybe i could be that guy selling food on the side of the highway...#i do think it would be cool to have a restaurant in the middle of nowhere and converting part of that into a stall is so easy#dude. fruit stands out in the country? that's the closest america gets. and that could be me.

An Unexpected Portuguese Side Effect
I have a gigantic love/hate relationship with shrimp. For the majority of my life, it's been on the hate side. This likely stems from the fact that growing up, the only shrimp I ever saw was creepily identically smooth and hanging off a bowl of ketchup. Blah, blah cocktail sauce. It's still gross.
It wasn't until China that I actually started eating shrimp. The texture still occasionally got me though. Then I lived in Central Europe where I rarely saw shrimp outside of frozen sushi boxes. When I moved back to the states, I occasionally would make them for dinner or grill nights, but still, not a protein I particularly enjoyed.
Then I went to Belize and had bad shrimp. After digestive pyrotechnics through the Guatemalan jungle and staying on an island that didn't have running water, I was anti-shrimp for years. I just couldn't. I tried a number of years later and....the smell. I tossed all of them. I couldn't convince myself to get them close to my face.
But I am one who dislikes disliking food. Unless it's a pointless food (iceberg lettuce, water chestnuts, melons -- if I wanted crunchy water, I'd eat an ice cube). I wandered around Lisbon's Time Out Market, looking for a price tag attached to a meal that included something I hadn't had before. I found it in a saffron and shrimp risotto with avruga. (Avruga: fake caviar made out of herring.) Head on shrimp still in the shell. Fresh, ok texture. I was ok with this.
I had more shrimp on a squid ink paella in Nazare. Granted, I was more obsessed with the cuttlefish, but the giant, head on, split tiger prawn was totally worth eating.
I had a round of seafood rice with shrimp in Aveiro, head and shell on and devourable. I was amazed. I've heard that head on shrimp have more flavor, but the texture of the shrimp was completely different as well. Was this a result of the cooking style? Or...was it leaving the shell on until after they are cooked that was revolutionizing my shrimp experience?
Since returning stateside, I've mastered poop shooting shrimp through the joints of their shells and discovering that the texture of the shrimp is perfect, every time. I get excited to eat the shrimp. I make sure to portion out my bites so I can have shrimp at the end.
Have I finally crossed into a long-term love of shrimp?
And just a little foreshadowing for my next trip: I focused my Duolingo time on Portuguese quite heavily prior to my time in Portugal. Amazingly, it helped me order food so easily in restaurants. I have played all sorts of Duolingo and never felt like it helped my speaking as much as it did for this trip. Somehow, spending so much time in Portuguese was finally the connection I needed to get French to stick in my head. After years of trying to make any sort of French stick and come back out of my face, the link was Portuguese.
Adeus, Portugal. Bonjour la France!
