We all need a brief getaway from the stress and strain in our lives. Itโ€™s fortunate that an adventure is only 60 minutes away from Manila. Quick beach vacations have traditionally been associated with the land of โ€œala eh.โ€ But Batangas Lakelands changed my perception that this place is more than just beaches, kapeng barako, and lomi. Because of the provinceโ€™s immense size, it is frequentlyโ€ฆ

Hugong ng Alon sa Lawang
Tumblr media
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media

Tumblr media Tumblr media
KAYAKING

Life Update: June 2024
It has been a while since I have last provided an entry on this blog. There are significant amount of changes that happened in my life over the course of three months, but nonetheless, I have enjoyed the journey so far. Based on my recent recollection of events, we went to numerous places during the summer vacation in the Philippines, and it is really refreshing to see the rather lively atmosphere that our beloved country has to offer. Don't get me wrong: I would also love to visit the other countries as well, such as the Eastern Asia nations: Japan and South Korea, as well as the North American nations, such as the land of the free, USA ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ and Canada ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฆ. I also fancy visiting the European Nations, including the recent "Brexit" of the United Kingdom ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง and perhaps Italy, Poland, Austria, etc. Let's also not forget the great Australian continent. Traveling is fun, don't you think?
We are already living in the post-COVID-19 pandemic year of 2024. A lot of things have already transpired. I am, of course, thankful to the Heavenly Father for all the good things that are happening in our life right now, as a family, as a community, and as a society. I am also thankful for the several opportunities that have arisen during my life in these past few months. I recall that during the summer months of March-April 2024, my mother allowed me to join their team-building in the Batangas area and at the same time they have allowed me to be myself and create numerous opportunities for relaxation, such as reading a pocketbook by the beach, or even simply just playing a mobile game. I also saw people playing beach volleyball or even grilling hotdogs, barbeques, meat, vegetables, etc. These are such amazing times, and I could not forget the feeling of amazement, the thrill, and the memory of that particular day. The name of the resort is "Heart of D' Ocean." Meanwhile, after such fun team-building, a few days have passed... we went to the glorious hot spring of Pansol in the province of Laguna. The water is undeniably gentle and warm. We went there early in the morning together with our Lolo and Lolas from the United States, who flew back in their home country, the Philippines to have a vacation and of course decided to enjoy a morning bath at the hot spring resort. After being accompanied by a close friend of my parents, we altogether decided to take a morning dip at the famous hot spring of the south, the Laguna Hot Spring. After enjoying the hot spring, we decided to have a formal bruch (breakfast/lunch) at a certain canteen eatery in Pansol in Laguna courtesy of the close friend of my parents. It was an enjoyable experience, as I was able to meet new people and also I was able to eat "lutong-bahay" food. After eating and sharing stories with each other, we bid our farewell, hoping to see each other again sometime.
Days have passed, and we went to Quezon City to visit a very close relative of ours and, at the same time, reconnect with distant relatives from our province of Isabela. We had a long chat about our recent undertakings and shared some updates about what is going on in our lives. We were also able to reconnect with our former relatives and affiliates of my parents and unknown people. It was all good after reuniting with friends and relatives.
Finally, the season of ordinary time has arrived sometime in June. Ordinary time is the time when my family, my friends, and my relatives experience the normalization of days passing by. It was a period where everything was going back to normal as we observed going to church every Sunday and doing our daily activities in life. I am thankful to the Heavenly Father that he allowed all of us to reach this point in our lives wherein we re-experience life as it happens. It is also a time wherein we cultivate our hobbies and pursue our passions in life. Hopefully, everything is doing well for my family, my friends, relatives, and colleagues around the world. In addition, recently, I am in full support of the #OperationFullCircle โœจ๏ธโœจ๏ธโœจ๏ธ of a close friend, whom I already considered as a brother, toward his journey as a lecturer in a prestigious college in Alabang, Muntinlupa City. As the post-COVID-19 year of 2024 is already in the works, I pray to God that he may continue to guide our paths towards the betterment of our communities, societies, and the world.
Let us make this world ๐ŸŒŽ a better place to live in and have the courage, strength ๐Ÿ’ช, and faith to keep going forward in our lives.
"Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. The only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven't found it yet, keep looking. Don't settle. As with all matters of the heart, you'll know when you find it."

A Whole New Chapter
Road Trip!
Here we go, off on a 2-week road trip through Northern Luzon!
Days 1-2, La Union
Picked up at 7:00am by our driver, Artemio, we packed up and headed north out of Manila. Even at this time, on a Sunday morning, it took most of an hour to clear Manila. Partly due to 24/7 traffic, but even without traffic the Metro Manila area is really big, on par with the largest cities in the world, even Los Angeles. Going thru Manila, I was reminded what a country of economic contrast this is, with the gleaming high-rise buildings of Manila and Makati in the background of expansive squatters slums along the expressway.
North of Manila you quickly get into lush farm and ranch lands, no difference between the two really, as farmers growing sugar cane, corn, all sorts of vegetable crops, and of course, rice, will also have cattle and goats tied up here and there. I think they rotate sections of their land, with some growing crops, while others are being naturally cleared and fertilized. The land from north of Metro Manila all the way until you reach the sea south of La Union, stretching some 200 km, struck me as a green Central Valley (California), with endless farmlands bordered by mountains both east and west, with small towns and scattered industrial buildings. Not much need for canals and irrigation here, though the rice paddies must have some sort of canal-based or pumped irrigation as they need to be flooded. Here and there we saw a farmer tilling his field with a plow drawn by a Carabao, the native oxen used as a draft animal.
The useful Carabao (picture from an earlier visit):
Tumblr media
I realized that one thing you donโ€™t see much of here, as compared to the Central Valley or any farming region in the US, is farm equipment. There is an occasional small farm tractor, but most of the heavy work here is still born by animals, or just human labor.
Max agreed with us that itโ€™s pretty nice to have a driver and just relax and enjoy the ride.
Tumblr media
Max was excited to see all the moo-moo cows, his favorite animal! Itโ€™s taken him a while to recognize the Philippine cattle as moo-moo cows, as they look different and, especially around our home in Batangas, very skinny compared to US cows. Iโ€™ve always thought that the cattle here were Brahma, as they have humps and floppy ears like the ones Iโ€™ve seen in pictures from India. Researching it, I found that the local cattle are recognized as a separate breed, known simply as โ€œPhilippine Nativeโ€ cattle, and are descended from cattle introduced from China and Mexico.
Tumblr media
Continuing north, we passed through the city of Angeles, where some readers may have been stationed, or at least passed through, as it was the home of Clark AFB until 1991. Now the air base is the major international airport serving northern Luzon.
We stayed on the expressway until it ends in the town of Rosario where we turned west onto the Mac Arthur Highway.
After 5 ยฝ hours on the road, we reached our destination, San Juan, La Union (oo-nee-own). La Union has relatively recently grown up as a resort area and surfing hub of the Philippines. Itโ€™s one of two areas in the Philippines, the other being Siargao, that host a professional World Surfing League event (see โ€œMark and Georgiaโ€™s March 2019 Philippines Tripโ€, Days 13-15). And sure enough, in contrast to the calm waters we see in most of the Philippines, they got waves! Just like Hawaii, the biggest waves come in the winter, though these were enough to scare Max from the water. Our hotel was on a wide, quiet beach, with just a few surfers practicing on the waves.
Tumblr media
We had Artemio drop us off in the next town down the coast, San Fernando, for dinner. San Fernando is the home of Urbiztondo beach, the center of the surfing scene. All along the beach are bars and restaurants, making this also party central! This seems to be what most of the generally younger crowd come to La Union for, the action on the beach rather than in the water.
Mass of humanity at Urbiztondo beach, a big contrast to the quiet beach where weโ€™re staying!
Tumblr media
We found a good Japanese restaurant just off the beach, that welcomed Max, and proceeded to eat too muchโ€ฆ
An aside, regarding Maxโ€™s acceptance as a service animal over here, itโ€™s a mixed bag, just as weโ€™d read about before coming. Some places, restaurants, shops, hotels, etc., simply welcome him without any fuss at all. Some initially try to forbid him but give in when we show his registration card and a copy of a Philippines Senate bill that reads very much like the US ADA laws, which guarantee that a service animal has the same right of entry to any establishment that the animalโ€™s owner/handler has. Some places, however, are just rude and donโ€™t care what we show them. Lastly, some are actually knowledgeable that the Senate bill we are armed with has not yet passed the Senate and therefore not actually law in the Philippines. We donโ€™t really push the issue much, and sometimes just move on.
After another full day sightseeing in and around La Union, we move on to Vigan, about a 3-hour drive up the coast.
Days 3-5, Vigan
Shortly after leaving San Juan, we enter the province of Ilocos Sur (Southern Ilocos). Provinces in the Philippines are like states in the U.S., with a Governor, legislature, and courts, the ability to create provincial laws, collect taxes, etc., while still operating under federal laws to an extent similar to the U.S. We live in Batangas province, La Union is another province, etc. There are 82 provinces in the Philippines.
We continue north on the Mac Arthur highway, a smooth, modern highway passing still through rich farm/ranch lands bordered by the sea to the west and mountains east. We pass through numerous small towns, many having familiar names such as Santa Cruz, Santa Maria, San Antonio, even San Jose and San Francisco, reflecting the influence of Spanish colonization.
Vigan has been on my โ€œmust visitโ€ list for many years; itโ€™s known as the foremost cultural heritage site in the Philippines. Having escaped most of the ravages of WW2 and other conflicts, the center of town retains the cobblestone streets and architecture from the Spanish colonial era (1565-1898).
Itโ€™s a short walk from our hotel to the nearby Calle Crisologo, the main โ€œold townโ€ street which is closed to auto traffic. We head that way, stopping for a quick lunch at ย nearby Plaza Burgos of local dishes including empanadas, okoy (veggie and seafood fritter), pinakbet (veggies and pork), dinakdakan (pork simmered in onions), and rice (all costing a whopping $4โ€ฆ). Getting to the Calle Crisologo, Georgia decided that Max and I needed a calesa ride. Calesa are the historic taxis of the Philippines, two-wheeled carriages drawn by small Philippine ponies. In every city at one time, they are still found giving rides to tourists, especially in places like Vigan. We walked along and selected a friendly looking pony, found that it cost only 200 pesos (about $3.50) for a 1-hour tour, so I hoisted Max up and off the three of us went on a nice tour of Vigan city.
Tumblr media
One place we passed by that I was curious about was the Ilocos Sur Capitol building, which was sporting what appeared to be Pride flags and colors. Curious, because being LGBTQ+ is still illegal in the Philippines, though such laws are not enforced as far as I know, and like any place you see people here just openly being who they are. I was just surprised, though, in this strictly Catholic nation, to see a government entity in such apparent solidarity. On checking, I found that on July 1, 2023, the province of Ilocos Sur adopted a resolution to โ€œTranscend in all Colorsโ€, outlining a 10-point agenda to promote โ€œDiversity, Equality, and Inclusivityโ€. Good for Ilocos Sur, hopefully such thinking will continue to spread throughout the Philippines.
Tumblr media
On the good advice of our calesa driver, we went back to the hotel room to wait out the heat of the day, then returned to Calle Crisologo in the evening when it had cooled off. We enjoyed a walk down the street with its cobblestones and colonial era homes, many now converted to souvenir shops and restaurants.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We stopped at a streetside cafรฉ for dinner and enjoyed a number of Ilocano dishes. Georgia explains that many dishes, e.g., Pinakbet, are found throughout the Philippines, but local variations can make large differences. For instance, I havenโ€™t really enjoyed Pinakbet before, but tonightโ€™s version was really good! Also, the longganisa (pork sausage) here is savory and garlicky vs. the sweet sausages by the same name found in most other regions.
The next morning we toured around town, going to a number of spots including one called the โ€œHidden Gardensโ€. Hidden, by being in an unexpected place within what looked like a residential area, it was a cool and serene path though a large garden. No admission fee, but there were ample opportunities to support the garden, and we did buy some plants to take home, to surprise our gardener Vima.
Monkeys 1, Max 0
I wish I had a video of thisโ€ฆ In the parking lot of the garden there was a monkey in a small cage. Max was off leash, and we encouraged him to go have a look, and he cautiously moved towards the monkey. Then, suddenly, the monkey got mad, reared up with arms in the air, bared his teeth, and made a loud screech! In a millisecond Max was gone, running faster than Iโ€™d ever seen him go, even when he's trying to run down a Chuckit ball with his sister Lizzie! We had no idea at first where he went, but we found heโ€™d taken refuge in the souvenir shop next to the parking lot. Weโ€™d planned that our next stop would be a local zoo but decided that one monkey would be enough for Max today!
So on to lunch. Empandas are an Ilocano specialty, so we went for another recommended empanaderia close to the hotel. Empanada are actually a common snack food all over the Philippines. Georgia makes them, based on her Momโ€™s recipe, with a meat and potato filling, sometimes with raisins for sweetness, baked in a folded pie crust shell. They are very different here โ€“ deep fried, have a lighter and crispy shell more like a spring roll wrapper, filled with shredded cabbage or green papaya, longganisa, and a whole egg. Different and delicious! All in all we tried 3 empanaderias, the last using shredded papaya rather than cabbage. We both agreed that this last one had the best flavor!
Crispy shell, cabbage, egg, and longganisa. Yum!
Tumblr media
After lunch Artemio drove us down to Santa Maria, to see an old church which was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1993. The first church was established on this site in 1567, with construction on the present church beginning in 1765. This beautiful church has been well cared for, and of course escaped damage during the war.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
All for now, just some of the sights and treats from La Union and Vigan. Next stops, Laoag and Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte, and Santa Ana, Cagayan.
Take care, see you soon!

My Journey in Batangas โœจ
The City of Batangas, Batangas has many fine beach resorts that most families go to in certain occasions like christmas, new year, summer. Especially because most of the resorts there are neat, has class and their sands are usually white which most people find pleasing. Batangas is the most popular tourist destination near Metro Manila. Traveling is my favorite thing to do but Batangas is the most cleanest and beautiful cities i have visited. Because of batangas, I already witnessed the different beauty of nature.
In April 17, 2023 me with my family first travelled Batangas, it takes 2-3hrs before we get there. Actually, it's not my first time in batangas but it's my first time to travel with my family. We went to a beach resort that has those qualities; we tried the island hopped and the islands were also beautiful, so we took our chances and took a lot of pictures of the place, taking pictures of those beautiful sand, trees and the sunset. It was very exciting and adventurous, we learnt to enjoy these new experiences because my family loves beach. Also, we rented a good cabin and stayed there for a few days it was overall a very relaxing experience that me and my family loved. We enjoyed my experience in batangas, and will forever cherish those every moments that i had never done before. For me, an excellent place to stay in Batangas is Lemery, we also had an excellent experience in our vacation there in Lemery Batangas. Our money and time spent well and it's worth it. Traveling is the best way to spend a memorable moment with my famil, and Batangas is a place that will give you a beautiful moments with your loved ones, and worth visiting because of that beautiful and calm places.

Pico Sands Hotel in Pico De Loro Offers Luxury Resort Village Experience
Tumblr media
I always thought that the Pico de Loro Beach and Country Club was a luxury resort that was only accessible for its exclusive members and guests. That is why I was really excited when The Hungry Kat was invited for a whirlwind three-day two-night vacation at Pico Sands Hotel to experience all the amenities and activities that are actually available to the public. Pico de Loro is a 40-hectare luxury residential resort village located inside the coastal community of Pico de Loro Cove at Hamilo Coast in Nasugbu, Batangas. It is just two hours away from Manila so it is the perfect spot for those looking for a relaxing trip without having to fly or drive too far away from the city.
Tumblr media
Pico Sands Hotel is a tropical contemporary seven-story hotel that offers spacious rooms equipped with modern amenities and captivating views of the lush mountains and tranquil lagoon inside Pico de Loro. The hotel is open to the public so guests can easily stay here and enjoy all the activities offered at Pico de Loro without having to be a member or owner of one of the condominiums in Pico de Loro.
Tumblr media
We arrived early in the morning to check in at the lobby of Pico Sands Hotel. The scenic drive through the mountains of Nasugbu, Batangas was actually quite refreshing. Free wifi is available throughout the hotel and the resort so you won't have any problems posting photos.
Tumblr media
Our lovely Corner Deluxe Lagoon View Room on the fifth floor comes with 39 square meters of rejuvenating space. It has a king-sized bed and a veranda overlooking the picturesque lagoon which provides a serene backdrop.
Tumblr media
A fresh fruit platter served as a welcome amenity for our stay. Coffee and tea making facilities are also provided as well as a minibar with some free snacks. The spacious bathroom comes with a rainshower and is complete with toiletry sets.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
What I really love about the Corner Deluxe room is that they have a longer balcony that stretches all the way to the other side of the room so you have more space to enjoy the scenery below. We could hear the birds chirping and playing around our balcony.
Tumblr media
Since we arrived early, we were able to freshen up before heading for our first lunch at Pico Restaurant which is located at the ground floor. Pico Restaurant is a scenic dining spot that offers Filipino and continental dishes.
Tumblr media
Our special menu consisted of sustainable and gastronomic dishes prepared by Pico de Loro Executive Chef Charles Marindoque, Jr. Chef Charles believes in sustainably sourcing ingredients from nearby local farmers and from Pico de Loro's own gardens.
Tumblr media
We began with the tasty Pinoy Trio Starters. These enticing appetizers had crispy shell topped with Kilawin Tanigue, Crispy Chicken Sisig, and Ensalada with Salted Egg.
Tumblr media
Next was the Sinigang na Bangus sa Miso which had milkfish in tamarind broth with yellow miso and local vegetables.
Tumblr media
Our main course was this beautiful plate of Crispy Pork Kare Kare with vegetables, Chicken Inasal Roll in soy calamansi sauce, and a cup of Puso Rice. The pork and chicken was sourced from local Batangas farmers which helps the community. I loved the deconstructed kare kare as well as the soy calamansi sauce used for dipping the chicken inasal.
Tumblr media
We then had this Special Halo Halo in Buko Shell to cap off our lunch at Pico Restaurant. The halo halo ingredients and the crushed ice were served inside the buco shell which is a unique way of presenting this classic Filipino dessert.
Tumblr media
Those looking for more drinks can head to The Pico Bar located just across Pico Restaurant which serves a wide range of beverages including power juices, cocktails, liquors, and signature fruit and mojito blends.
Tumblr media
After that heavy lunch, we decided to walk around the resort to burn some calories away. Right at the center of this residential enclave is a four-hectare man-made saltwater lagoon, surrounded by lush greenery and stunning landscapes. There's a big fountain here too as well as koi fish swimming in some areas of the lagoon.
Tumblr media
Just a few steps away from the Pico Sands Hotel is the Pico de Loro Country Club, an exclusive leisure club found within Pico de Loro Cove. Hotel guests get access to Pico de Loro Country Club for two adults and two kids per room. Each guest will be given a colored wrist band which means they can enter and use the facilities at the Country Club.
Tumblr media
The giant infinity pools offerย a great venue for families with its outstretched views of the lagoon. There's also a gym and fitness center for health buffs who wish to work out during their vacation.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
There are many other energizing activities at the country club with its wide selection of sports facilities and indoor recreational amenities. You can have fun playing table tennis, basketball, volleyball, squash, tennis, and other sports. These come with respective fees and rental rates.
Tumblr media
Guests with children should definitely Club Pico with its children's play area and many fun activities for the kiddos.
Tumblr media
As for us, we decided to spend our afternoon at the Bowling and Billiards Center. They have a six-lane bowling alley where you can have fun at very affordable rates compared to those found in the malls. Billiards is another option for families and barkadas. They also offer darts and a snack bar here.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
We were actually supposed to go an a Sunset Cruise that afternoon but because of the uncooperative waves, we had to postpone it for another day. The wines and charcuterie board that were supposed to accompany us during the cruise ended up at the bowling alley instead, but we surely didn't mind sipping on our wine glasses while bowling.
Tumblr media
For those looking for the beach itself, Pico Beach is a leisurely 10-minute walk away located at the end of the resort village. A complimentary shuttle service is also available to transport guests to the beach and around Pico de Loro Cove.
Tumblr media
Pico Beach boasts of a 1.5-kilometer stretch of white sand beach with Mt. Pico de Loro at the background. The panoramic views offer a refreshing escape from the busy city life.
Tumblr media
You can find the Pico de Loro Beach Club right along the beach. While hotel guests have access to the Country Club, the Beach Club facilities are only available exclusively to Pico De Loro members and their accompanied guests. This beachfront recreational club houses other specialty restaurants like the Reef Bar, Pool bar, Sun Coral Cafรฉ, the Arribada Lounge, the alfresco Brisa bar, and a view deck to fit important functions and fun get-togethers.
Tumblr media
Aside from its three swimming pools, the Pico de Loro Beach Club also offers water activities such as jet skis, banana boats, kayaks, paddleboards and more.
Tumblr media
Due to the weather, our planned dinner by the beach at the Reef Bar had to be moved inside to the Sun Coral Cafe. We still enjoyed the Reef Bar's menu of casual meals and grilled dishes. The Burritos come with your choice of filling from Beef Tapa, Pork Sisig, or Chicken Inasal. They also arrive Naked or Rolled depending on your preference.
Tumblr media
They also serve tacos on a soft tortilla or a hard taco shell. The Al Pastor comes with pineapple-achiote flavored pork, while the Barbacoa Beef has braised spicy beef. They also brought out the Quesadilla de Carmen and the Country-Style Barbecue Chicken Quesadilla. For dessert, the Banana Empanada is served with Vanilla ice cream and was a delightful end to our first day at Pico de Loro. There's a lot more in store for us on our second day and you can read all about it on the next article.

The Amazing Road Trips in The Philippines

I am introducing our place, this is Batangas City, Batangas is known for beautiful destinations and beautiful sights, apart from fresh air and beautiful destinations, Batangas is also known for good vacations. I remember when we lived here in Batangas I felt boring and there was no good place to go but a few days went by and my mind wandered so it all started here I realized that Batangas is beautiful there are many places to go and it's very kind The person is polite, humble, of course, loving to others. When I was there, it was really boring. At first, you can feel that feeling until it gets to the point where it seems like he doesn't want to leave. You know that feeling? It's like you don't want to go to another place because Batangas is legit so beautiful not only in the destination but it's better to live here than in Manila why? It's very quiet and there's no trouble, the air is fresh, the feeling that you're at ease, you don't have anything else to think about but the feeling that everything is calm, that's all I can say, this is the place you can come back to again and again.

I am happier here because I can spend time with my cousins, my grandmother and grandfather, I can take care of them, I want to make them feel that I love them through the love that I make them feel. "Ala eh pumarne ka para malaman mo". This place has a lot of memories for me because here is the joy that I have never experienced in my life. This is the kind of place where I can relax. Everyone likes a beautiful place, so I'm very lucky because I experienced a place that is very beautiful and good living, you? I hope we feel the same, it's just happy, there's no problem in mind because it's a very beautiful place, I'm proud of our place, it's very beautiful and it's very nice to visit.

I'm just reminding you that when you have a beautiful place like this, take care of it and love it because you rarely see a place like this, why don't we take care of the natural resources of our area, keep it clean and attractive, just come here to our place!
