VERY proud of my little windowsill nepenthes! (Didn’t come labeled, but I think it’s a ventricosa. Maybe a high red clone?) I’ve only had it for a little more than a year and its pitchers have changed so much- all the little fringes are gone from the front of the pitchers, and the rims are increasingly flared. Also my small forest of cape sundew, of course.
#Had a scare this spring where the nepenthes’ leaves started discoloring quickly. D:#Turns out it just needed repotted though whew. Was pleased as punch most of its leaved recovered just fine.#The grower warned me it’d need repotted in a year or so and damn he wasn’t kidding.#This is the only one I’ve ever had and it had been doing so well I was SO worried it was giving up the ghost. But alls well that ends well.#The capensis started out as one plant many years ago. (6ish??)#Intrepid- it survived me bumbling through figuring out where best to put it. Reseeded in its own pot after I got it enough sun.#Those are its million babies I split into separate pots this spring. I don’t even think they noticed the repot. What troopers#House plants#carnivorous plants#sundew#pitcher plant#nepenthes#drosera#plantblr#indoor plants#thrush laughs

every drawing of Adam he's getting more and more bald
such is life for men of a certain age
#my favorite part of doing the comic is the character designs changing through different periods of their lives#I worry adam's reseeding hairline might be too subtle but i do really like adding it

Bringing this one back since I recently had a chance to walk through one of these, and it really is the Came Back Wrong trope for forests:
Like it looks like a forest! As long as you don't look too close.
monoculture forests are deeply unsettling in a way that is hard to explain to people who do not spend a lot of time looking at forests
#to be fair#this one was reseeded a while back#and has had time to regrow the underbrush#but it still invokes the uncanny valley effect#or maybe uncanny forest is more appropriate

#aa#like what is he doing i thought he was just reseeding the lawn but now it seems like he’s just sitting listening to the game on the radio#wanted to watch a movie at six after running home and then cleaning somewhere but now it looks like that won’t happen#like if he left within the next thirty minutes it would be hard but doable. but.

This relies on "the Tyranids are running from something" being true buuuut hewwego
The Tyranids are the fused biomass of an entire galactic population fleeing an unknown threat that was deleting whole swaths of spacetime from their galaxy. With no way to stop, predict, or even understand the threat, they pooled their resources and became the Hive Mind, storing every person's personality and memories in a massive collective consciousness redundantly backed up across an enormous fleet of hive ships. Biotech was the preferred technology of a few of the spacefaring species of this original galaxy, and the meeting of leaders in response to the vanishing stars settled on a biotech escape system because it could self-repair, refuel with just about any resource imaginable, adapt to unforeseen but mundane challenges, pull new societies into the hive to save them from The Vanishing, and conserve every molecule of resource they get their tendrils on. They scoured their entire home galaxy of every last scrap of biomass and got the FUCK outta Dodge.
Their end goal is to consume everyone and everything in the Laniakea Supercluster, book it across the Local Void to Perseus-Pisces, begin reseeding every ecosystem and civilization they ate in an inversion of their planetary consumption processes, and hope like hell The Vanishing can't travel those kinds of distances.
The big canonical Hive Fleets' intelligence is comprised almost wholly of military tactics, science, a little bit of diplomacy, and the primary objective of the Hive, while the greater Hive Mind lurks just outside the galaxy because they absolutely cannot afford the risk of losing data on the cultures, ecosystems, and people's actual minds to battle. Communication with Milky Way locals has failed utterly, unfortunately, so the Hive must use force in order to consume and record the peoples of the Milky Way.
There are a number of things in 40k lore that the known canonical Tyranids have avoided eating (the Ymgarl Genestealers, the toxic sludge remnants of Hesp, etc.). There are specialist fleets that are designed to reclaim and reabsorb otherwise-hazardous biomass, but these fleets cannot be deployed until military resistance throughout the galaxy has been crushed and total consumption is assured. Some of these specialist fleets might also be better at communicating with the locals, but alas, multiple galaxies' worth of people are backed up in massive spacefaring brains, and it is ABSOLUTELY IMPERATIVE that this particular biomass remain as unharmed as possible. Specialist fleets are on standby until resistance has been dealt with.
They are consistently frustrated with the Imperium's totalitarian enforcement of its laws and faith, because they're dimly aware that the Emperor wants to advance humanity's evolution into something psychically independent from the Warp. The Tyranids already are, and would gladly offer it to them post-reseeding if they would just put their damn bolters down!
Alright Warhammer fans, what's that one theory you've come up with? That one you need a tinfoil hat, several cans of energy drinks and an extremely loose view of the lore to come up with?
My big one is piggybacking off of the idea that the Tyranids are a creation of the Old Ones. But it goes a step further.
Basically, the theory goes that a handful of Old Ones survived The War in Heaven and it's aftermath and are the main controllers of the Hive Mind. Their psychic powers were supposed to be OP as fuck so I figure them putting their minds together, metaphorically and literally, could allow them some level of great control over the Tyranids.
My reasoning behind this theory is that the Old Ones fled to another far-away Galaxy and created the Tyranids specifically as one big recycling force specially designed to combat the main threats of the Milky Way to create a clean slate for the Old Ones to work with.
Shadow in the Warp to suppress Warp Entities and Eldar, Consumption of Biomass to slow down and negate Krork population growth and the literal Million, Billion, Trillion, Quadrillions of Nids to fight the Necrons because they're also extremely OP and a War of Attrition is your best bet to win.
Of course, there are massive holes to poke in this theory. "How did the Old Ones move around unnoticed without the Webway and attracting Daemons? How did they acquire enough biomass in a relatively short amount of time to create the whole Tyranid force? The Nids exhibit X, Y, Z traits that imply they're not being controlled like this at all." This is just a fun but stupid theory I like to think about sometimes.
#wh40k#tyranids#xerx's 40k headcanon#OH BOY NEW HEADCANON TAG Y'ALL HERE WE GOOOOOOOOOOOO#my burgeoning Tyranid hive is itself one of these specialist fleets!#they are merciful. they are more communicative. they will retreat from the battlefield IMMEDIATELY if they suspect they'll lose data#they're also specially evolved to digest filter and reincorporate Ymgarl genestealers#they're probably not gonna make planetfall anywhere in the galaxy until like. M58#They may or may not be an offshoot of Hydra#I personally believe Hydra's cannibalistic tendencies are related to experimenting with bioform evolution#I'd love to design some reseeder bioforms someday that'd be fun#freaky Tyranid dudes designed to till fields and plant forests and filter the atmosphere into a breathable state#Norn queens designed to birth humans and T'au and Eldar and trees and livestock and wild animals#hi. sorry to necropost reblog from a total stranger a year after publishing. I wanted to talk about bugs

Looking Good!
Except for throwing out a few wildflower seeds between snowfalls this winter, I didn’t do anything for my garden. I wanted to see what of the perennials would come up again and what annuals would reseed themselves so that I wouldn’t plant over something I wanted. Not as many flowers as I expected came up again this year. In fact, as you can see, one of the areas in the bottom lefthand corner…
