I have like. thoughts about the practice of "rescuing" rats from feeder bins and pet stores, but I want to preface the entire thing with the disclaimer that I'm not talking about individual people whose individual rats turned out fine.

I am talking specifically about a pet store/feeder bin variant of the smug and militant "adopt don't shop" mentality that extends to writing off ethical breeders as monsters who are in it for the money, or at least misguided souls who are selfishly pumping more rats into some sort of direct and equal competition with every other rat on earth.

Right. So.

Ethical breeders are not the problem, and that includes feeder breeders. Feeder breeders are not inherently unethical. But often they are selecting for DIFFERENT TRAITS than pet breeders. Feeder breeders AND pet breeders are done a disservice by arguments that ignore this.

Take mammary tumors. Extremely common in female rats over 18 months of age, around when ovulation stops. Most feeder rats are not expected to live nearly that long.

A female rat's ideal fertility window is generally between 3 and 12 months old. A feeder breeder could theoretically prioritize fertility (litter size) and quality of life to the end of their preferred window, and produce rats who are healthy and happy up until their "one bad day," without ever worrying about mammary tumors. These rats are not supposed to be beloved family pets. They are supposed to be healthy and ethically sourced meals for beloved family pets.

A dedicated pet breeder, on the other hand, will often observe rats into their old age (2+ years) to determine whose babies, and whose babies' babies, to keep in their lines and sell to the public. It's a complicated, multi-generational process specifically honed to produce pet-quality animals.

Pet rats also need to meet certain temperament standards. There is much more to this than just producing rats that don't bite humans. Pet rats should be comfortable around not just humans, but unfamiliar stimuli in general. A rat who bites its owner or cowers in a corner all day is a rat who is very, very stressed and suffering. And again, this is not something that can be guaranteed from a young age, because things like hormonal aggression can kick in later in life.

So people buy these animals that were never meant to be pets, that were never meant to live longer than a few weeks or months at most, and these animals suffer. They are stressed. They lash out. Their bodies start breaking down because they were supposed to stop a long time ago.

People also suffer. People get bit. People spend months trust-training a skittish, angry rat, and make a tiny bit of progress before that rat goes downhill and dies, breaking their heart.

This is not to cast doubt on anyone's personal experiences with healthy, happy feeders-turned-pets. That can happen, but it's a huge gamble. Some breeders sell both, so you might end up with a rat who didn't quite make the pet-quality cut, but is still healthier and more temperamentally sound than the average feeder. And yes, sometimes you might end up with the sweetest, healthiest rat in the world out of a feeder bin by pure chance, but it's a very small chance.

Feeder rats are often crowded into unsuitable housing in loud, bright pet stores. That sucks. It's cruel. But taking those rats home and putting them in better cages isn't going to change their genetics. It's not a matter of whether or not they deserve a good home, it's a question of if that will actually help.

The same often applies to pet store rats who are supposed to be pets. If you can't find any information on who breeds them, odds are very high that they're no better off than the feeders. They might be feeders who got put in the pet section because they're pretty. If your local pet store actually sells ethically bred, healthy, temperamentally sound, appropriately housed pet rats, then by all means support them! But this is usually not the case, at least with big chains.

Pet stores are also, I suspect, a major contributor to rats being given to shelters or abandoned outside. I'm in a few rat groups online and at least once a week I see a post by someone who brought home an unexpectedly pregnant rat because the store didn't separate them, or a rat who is now pregnant because the store said "These are all boys."

One girl in a cage full of boys can produce up to 16 babies. One boy in a cage full of girls can produce up to 16 babies per girl. And if you don't separate the babies early enough, or if you miss one, the babies can and will get each other pregnant at just five or six weeks old.

So what do you do with potentially 100+ rats that you didn't budget for? That you have no space for? That you don't know how to care for, because they're so young? What do you do with six pregnant does and no birthing experience? What do you do with six young pregnant does and no birthing experience? What do you do if there's no one in your life who wants to buy rats? What do you do if you're not willing to sell them as feeders, or can't find anyone who wants feeders? Where do you put them?

It is also far easier for someone to impulse-buy a rat at a pet store, and then change their mind once they find out A) they need at least two, B) it's probably already sick and/or pregnant, C) their vet can't treat it, D) it's more expensive to treat than a dog or cat, E) it can't just eat leftover dog food or kitchen scraps, F) it violates their lease, and/or G) their kids don't want it anymore.

Good breeders are more likely to have a waitlist, or at least a set date at which your chosen rats will be old enough to leave. They also tend to have an application process, which can weed out people who don't understand rat care, people who are planning to hide animals from their landlord, and in some cases people buying for their children.

Which may seem unfair if you are any of those people, but which is meant to guarantee that these animals will have appropriate care and a roof over their heads for the foreseeable future. A lot of breeders even ask that if you are ever unable to continue caring for your rats, you give them back.

Sooo, no. I don't think responsible breeders are by and large to blame for the overabundance of domesticated rats on the market, in the shelters, or running wild at your local park.
