Middlemen without enshittification

Enshittification describes how platforms go bad, which is also how the internet goes bad, because the internet is made of platforms, which is weird, because platforms are intermediaries and we were promised that the internet would disintermediate the world:

The internet did disintermediate a hell of a lot of intermediaries – that is, "middlemen" – but then it created a bunch more of these middlemen, who coalesced into a handful of gatekeepers, or as the EU calls them "VLOPs" (Very Large Online Platforms, the most EU acronym ever).

Which raises two questions: first, why did so many of us end up flocking to these intermediaries' sites, and how did those sites end up with so much power?

To answer the first question, I want you to consider one of my favorite authors: Crad Kilodney (RIP):

When I was growing up, Crad was a fixture on the streets of Toronto. All through the day and late into the evening, winter or summer, Crad would stand on the street with a sign around his neck ("Very famous Canadian author, buy my books, $2" or sometimes just "Margaret Atwood, buy my books, $2"). He wrote these deeply weird, often very funny short stories, which he edited, typeset, printed, bound and sold himself, one at a time, to people who approached him on the street.

I had a lot of conversations with Crad – as an aspiring writer, I was endlessly fascinated by him and his books. He was funny, acerbic – and sneaky. Crad wore a wire: he kept a hidden tape recorder rolling in his coat and he secretly recorded conversations with people like me, and then released a series of home-duplicated tapes of the weirdest and funniest ones:

I love Crad. He deserves more recognition. There's an on-again/off-again documentary about his life and work that I hope gets made some day:

But – and this is the crucial part – there are writers out there I want to hear from who couldn't do what Crad did. Maybe they can write books, but not edit them. Or edit them, but not typeset them. Or typeset, but not print. Or print, but not spend the rest of their lives standing on a street-corner with a "PUTRID SCUM" sign around their neck.

Which is fine. That's why we have intermediaries. I like booksellers (I was one!). I like publishers. I like distributors. I like their salesforce, who go forth and convince the booksellers of the world to stock books like mine. I have ten million things I want to do before I die, and I'm already 52, and being a sales-rep for a publisher isn't on my bucket list. I am so thankful that someone else wants to do this for me.

That's why we have intermediaries, and why disintermediation always leads to some degree of re-intermediation. There's a lot of explicit and implicit knowledge and specialized skill required to connect buyers and sellers, creators and audiences, and other sides of two-sided markets. Some producers can do some of this stuff for themselves, and a very few – like Crad – can do it all, but most of us need some help, somewhere along the way. In the excellent 2022 book Direct, Kathryn Judge lays out a clear case for all the good that middlemen can do:

So why were we all so anxious for disintermediation back in the late 1990s? Here's a hint: it wasn't because we hated intermediaries – it was because we hated powerful intermediaries.

The point of an intermediary is to serve as a conduit between producers and consumers, buyers and sellers, audiences and creators. When an intermediary gains power over the audience – say, by locking them inside a walled garden – and then uses that lock-in to screw producers and appropriate an ever larger share of the value going between them, that's when intermediaries become a problem.

The problem isn't that someone will handle ticketing for your gig. The problem is that Ticketmaster has locked down all the ticketing, and the venues, and the promotions, and it uses that power to gouge fans and rip off artists:

The problem isn't that there's a well-made website that lets you shop for goods sold by many small merchants and producers. It's that Amazon has cornered this market, takes $0.51 out of every dollar you spend there, and clones and destroys any small merchant who succeeds on the platform:

The problem isn't that there's a website where you can stream most of the music ever recorded. It's that Spotify colludes with the Big Three labels to rip off artists and sneaks crap you don't want to hear into your stream in order to collect payola:

The problem isn't that there's a website where you can buy any audiobook you want. It's that Amazon's Audible locks every book to its platform forever and steals hundreds of millions of dollars from creators:

The problem, in other words, isn't intermediation – it's power. The thing that distinguishes a useful intermediary from an enshittified bully is power. Intermediaries gain power when our governments stop enforcing competition law. This lets intermediaries buy each other up and corner markets. Once they've formed cozy cartels, they can capture their regulators and commit rampant labor, privacy and consumer violations with impunity. That capture also lets them harness governments to punish smaller players that want to free workers, creators, audiences and customers from walled gardens. It also hands them a whip-hand over their workers, so that any worker who refuses to aid in these nefarious plans can be easily fired:

A world with intermediaries is a better world. As much as I love Crad Kilodney's books, I wouldn't want to live in a world where the only books on my shelves came from people prepared to stand on a street-corner wearing a "FOUL PUS FROM DEAD DOGS" sign.

The problem isn't intermediaries – it's powerful intermediaries. That's why the world's surging antitrust movement is so exciting: by reinstating competition law, we can keep intermediaries small and comparatively weak, so that creators and audiences, drivers and riders, sellers and buyers, and other groups seeking to connect will not find themselves made subservient to middlemen.

So it goes tells the story of the 2014 Victoria Secret After Party: ''All eyes were on Harry and Taylor when they turned up. In context of the 2015 timeline 1989 (I know places established they wanted their relationship to go private) and 1D’s Four (with Stockholm Syndrome) had just been released. The last time it was played was in the last Rep show in Tokyo, (9:38) with 2 other rare songs for the Rep Tour: I Know Places and Wildest Dreams. Harry Styles was in Japan that month and wrote Little Freak before he left Tokyo.

3 December 2014 - Harry and Taylor seen dancing till 3am at the VS After party, where they were described as having "all eyes on them."

Live performances

So it goes has only been played live 9 times, ever. For a fan favorite love song this should further confirm it is an emotional song to Taylor at the time. She's also played it at particular times and paired it with particular songs:

June 22, 2018, Wembley. Where Harry lives. First time played was 2 months into the tour. Taylor also had Niall Horan as a guest in an NYC shirt. The same night Harry was very emotional, he sung Still the One in Madison Square Garden. Taylor later had that suit in the Me! video. It’s unclear why this date was so special, though it was 1 year and 2 days after his step-dad passed.

July 10, 2018, Landover, with State of Grace

July 14, 2018, Philadelphia, with Treacherous. Close to State of Grace/Temper Trap arm/tattoo anniversary.

Lyrics

The first verse sets the scene, similar to the articles Harry and Taylor are the focus of many, drawn to each other and wanting to keep their connection secret.

In Hoax, Taylor has a similar lyric to magician "Your sleight of hand"

'Gold cage, hostage to my feelings' refers to being trapped by love. Similar to Stockholm Syndrome, which was released only 2 weeks before the VS party, Taylor is trapped in a gold/gilded cage (a luxurious prison) by love.

So it goes is a lyric in Style. In the chorus Taylor lets us know that when they are away from others they have great chemistry. She also refers to lipstick, referred to in many 1989 songs. Taylor is described as a 'bad/good girl often, she talks about it in Miss Americana and also in:

Style: And I got that good girl faith and a tight little skirt

Question...?; Good girl, sad boy

Only Angel: That she's gonna be an angel, just you wait and see, When it turns out she's a devil in between the sheets

[Verse 2] Met you in a bar All eyes on me, your illusionist All eyes on us I make all your gray days clear And wear you like a necklace I'm so chill, but you make me jealous But I got your heart Skippin', skip-skippin' when I'm gone

The afterparty was in Basement bar. The illusionist/magician references are enjoying knowing that she and her muse will leave together without others knowing. 'Make all grey days clear' tells us the muse is British.

[Bridge] You did a number on me But, honestly, baby, who's counting? I did a number on you But, honestly, baby, who's counting? You did a number on me But, honestly, baby, who's counting? Who's counting? (One, two, three)

The bridge tells us more about her relationship with her muse, they have a history, have hurt each other before and are wanting to move on. Though she says she is letting it go she is also keeping score. At this point the events of Red, 1989 and most of the one direction songs about TS had transpired between them.

In Grapejuice Harry starts the song with 1, 2, 3 and ends on 1 (I.e let’s start again) here Taylor also counts 1, 2, 3 after “you didn’t a number on me but honestly baby who’s counting”

I keep seeing people saying: I can't wait for her future self to sing live the XXXX (insert the title of a song inspired by/ written for Joe) and dedicate/reassign it to Travis. Is it real a thing among swifties ? I mean why would you want anything like that? Some of those songs are so heavily Joe coded that to me it would feel so weird. Like when is she going to the lakes where the poets went to die with him? Or meet in dive bars? Or hide in their rooms protecting their secret love from the public/ media? Or when is she gonna read all the books beside his bed? It's a totally different relationship with totally different bases and who knows what development. Even Lover, yes it's a love song but the vows sound very personal. The feeling might be universal but those were targeted lyrics. She will sing those songs in the future but like any other song of hers with detachment and that's it. Maybe it's just me. She has time to write songs for him. Swifties should ask for that, not for an adaptation of Joe's songs.

I absolutely get what you're saying! Songs like Mastermind and I Think He Knows are "vague" enough that they can be applied to a lot of relationships, but some of the details in other songs (Paper Rings, invisible string, long story short, Dress...) are so specific to Joe/their relationship that it feels impossible to assign them to someone else. We "know" that she's transformed some old love songs to be about Joe (like when she sang CB... BH in Toronto on the rep tour while wearing Joe's necklace and seemed really in her feelings), but with some hyper-specific lyrics it just feels impossible.

That being said, while I don't think she'll ever be able to think about someone else while singing invisible string or Paper Rings (those songs in particular are as specific as you can get, it's just Joe after Joe after Joe with each line haha), I think she'll be able to think about someone else while singing most of her love songs, if she wants to.

But I have no idea what she wants to do: making the songs about the fans? Just detaching from the experience? Making them about the memories she creates while performing? Making them about a new lover? It's probably a mix of these and more.

I'm sure that eventually even singing songs like invisible string won't 'cause any pain, though, and that's what matter.

The Rogers Centre is a baseball stadium with a retractable roof !! When I went to see Taylor in Toronto during Rep Tour it was August and the roof was still closed. But we’ll still need parkas to get to the concert 😭 it gets cold in November

yeah that's the rogers center in toronto. taylor was there for rep tour. but i'm not sure what the engineers/her team that built the stage would recommend the safe distance be as it'd be a tight fit i think.

Today I saw in my Facebook memories that 5 years ago I went to the rep tour in Detroit! It says it was my 18th time seeing @taylorswift ! After some counting back I realized I miscounted my t swift shows during the eras!. I thought my next show would be my 22nd. Turns out it’ll be my 24th! Which means I missed out wearing a 22 outfit for my 22nd show. But it does mean I wore the same dress to my 2nd show as my 22nd show! I am fighting so hard to get to my 24th time seeing you Taylor next year! Any show in Toronto or Indianapolis!

I can only find videos for the Rep Tour & 1989 (which is awful quality). But I’ve been able to go to all of @taylorswift tours since Fearless in 2010. I can’t believe how hard it is to secure tickets to the Eras tour. Like I’m happy for all of the hype and wild success for Taylor but damnnnn it sucks 😞 she needs to announce about 100 more dates in Toronto 😭😭😭 I’ve spent the last 16 years raising my own Swiftie (she was born in ‘06) and now that she’s old enough to go - i can’t bring her. And I don’t think she is! I really don’t think she’s thinking about Matt while singing Lover hahaha, at least not yet. Anyway, the music is hers, and she can make the songs to be about whomever she wants them to be about, and we can do the same. I mean, I still don’t really like Matt, but if they date for a long time she’ll eventually make some love songs she wrote about Joe to be about him in her mind, and that’s okay. She did the same with CB… BH when she sang it while clearly thinking about Joe at the rep tour in Toronto. As I said a couple of days ago, it’s part of what art is: it changes form and assumes new meanings as time goes by, even for the author.

it is very weird to me that they weren't included in the US announce, but also would be 30x weirder if - given the amount of markets she's doing this time / that she didn't cut that many from Rep tour - she didn't do at least Toronto.
