An open letter to the U.S. Congress
Support S. 3402 / HR 6608, The End Hedge Fund Control of American Homes Act.
123 so far! Help us get to 250 signers!
The housing crisis is devastating communities all across the country, and corporate executives are exploiting it to put more money in their pockets. We shouldn’t allow private equity firms to buy up vast quantities of American homes and create a generation of lifelong renters.  Congress needs to act fast and help promote access to safe, affordable housing and homeownership for American families, not Wall Street.
That’s why I support S. 3402 / HR 6608, The End Hedge Fund Control of American Homes Act. This legislation seeks to put an end to the harmful practice of hedge funds buying up single-family homes by banning hedge funds from owning these types of homes and requiring them to sell at least 10% of the total number of single-family homes they currently own to families per year over a 10-year period. After a 10-year full phase-out, all hedge funds will be completely banned from owning any single-family homes. This legislation will bring down housing prices, giving more families the opportunity to purchase a home and set their families up for a bright future.
I’d like you to co-sponsor and work to pass this vital legislation. Continued Congressional inaction on the housing crisis is unacceptable. Thanks.

The average asking price for a rental unit in Canada reached $2,178 last month, a 9.9 per cent year-over-year increase and continuing a trend that has seen asking rents hit new highs for six months in a row. That's according to the latest rental price report released by Rentals.ca and Urbanation that analyzes monthly listings from the former's network. The findings show while October's annual rate of rent growth in Canada was down from the 11.1 per cent jump in September, it still marked the second fastest annual increase of the past seven months. On a monthly basis, average asking rents increased 1.4 per cent in October, a slight decrease from the monthly gains of 1.5 per cent in September and 1.8 per cent in August, which was attributed to seasonal factors.

I am so unbelievably pissed off. FUCK HOAs
Oh, my trash/recycling bin can't be visible except on pickup day? Ok whatever fine I hate you but I can deal with this
Weekly inspections?????? FU FU FU FU FU
SECOND NOTICE ALSO WE'RE CHARGING YOU MONEY TO SEND YOU CERTIFIED MAIL OF THIS TOTALLY LEGIT TOTALLY SECOND NOTICE OF WHAT IS ACTUALLY A VIOLATION cue me: checks notes. Hmm. My recycling bin was. on the curb. on recycling pickup day. You know. The day it has to be out. The day it is motherfucking ALLOWED TO BE FUCKING OUT AND VISIBLE.
so. 1) not a violation
I have sent them the trash AND recycling pickup schedules, which are DIFFERENT, btw
I have disputed the fact of the violation
I have disputed the linking of this "violation" to a previous violation MONTHS AGO--their "first notice" in this case was a "Courtesy Notice" LITERALLY 5 MONTHS AGO and they've done so many inspections since then and my bin CLEARLY WASN'T OUT IN THOSE INTERVENING MONTHS so WTMFH
So I am posting like a crazy person here instead of sending the absolutely deranged email I almost sent (I did send a slightly less deranged version with the disputes, and requesting a hearing)
OMG. It has been. Less than one hour since I learned this fun fun news. My bin was out YESTERDAY, y'all. YESTERDAY. I am going to blow a gasket
#it's a relatively privileged problem to have (omg i have a home truly i am grateful) but it's still a goddamned problem and i'm allowed#to fucking complain about it#in case it needs to be said#*rolling my eyes*#i advocate for free/actually affordable housing for everyone who needs it because we ALL deserve a safe secure stable home#whatever type of home that may be#it is absolutely goddamned ridiculous that megacorps can buy all the housing#rent it out at extortionate rates and evict people willy nilly#and we're talking about a “housing crisis” and not a “STOP LETTING CORPORATIONS AND BILLIONAIRES HOARD ALL THE HOUSING” crisis#goddamn.#ha elect me president (ahaha don't do this i am not a good public speaker) and I'll push congress to pass some really neat legislation#hey be more direct: elect me to congress (ahaha don't do this) and i'll WRITE some goddamn nifty legislation and yell about it as long and#as loud as i can until people start to just fucking say yes to make me shut the fuck up#(i know that's not how it works. again. don't actually elect me to a government position)#exemplia gratis:#No individual person shall own more than 6 homes UNLESS they pay a Housing Market Shrinkage Fee for removing viable housing from the market#why 6 and not 2? 2 is a lot! it's excessive! but having A vacation home shouldn't be a crime. Having 5 vacation homes is ridiculous and#awful and whatever but it's not likely to be the source of all our greatest “housing shortage” problems. no. I'm aiming for the absolutely#monstrously greedy and egregious motherfuckers who---ok#hang on. how many homes does the average min and max homeowner own? I would like to see data on that. but anyway#the next part of the legislation:#Homes owned >6 shall be charged X% Housing Market Shrinkage Fee UNLESS they are rented for affordable (15% or less than renter net income)#housing and are actively occupied by said renters. Rented out and charging more than 15% of renter's net? still gotta pay up.#EMPTY housing >6 shall be subject to an additional Y% Housing Market Shrinkage Fee (tax? should I call it a tax?) which increases with ever#month that the housing goes unoccupied. no one living in it? sell it rent it or pay the fuck up. and still pay the fuck up if you rent it#for way too goddamn much money#but like. less. we only REALLY hate you if you sit on empty houses that you don't even let anyone use#ok that's individuals. now onto BUSINESSES#ok so immediately it gets a little complicated cuz like presumably there's rental management businesses that don't own the rental propertie#that they manage BUT there are also companies that just outright own a shitfuckton of housing and THIS is the truly egregious monstrous sid

It kills me that when I mention my Houston area rent is $1000 a month the reaction is always "Wow! What a great deal!"
Then I'm like "but there's no ventilation, it's a shed in a maga bro's back yard next to his pig pen and his mother in law is always chain-smoking in the driveway, the plumbing is a mess, the well water reeks of sulfur, and the walls are infested with carpenter ants and mold."
—and they go "Still. $1000." "Yeah, I do have a small fenced yard and a covered parking spot."
Bruhhh why do we live like this. And I know it could be worse—I toured another place listed at $1100 that had clearly caught on fire, been soaked in piss, and was infested with rats.
It kills me I can't even buy another RV and save that way because the nearest RV parks all charge about a grand a month too.

Rather, gentrification is a continuation of colonization.
Gentrification is maintenance of already colonized spaces.
Gentrification is an ongoing tool of genocidal conquer.

British Columbia’s minister of housing says he’s shocked and frustrated by an attempt to recruit people to take part in what he calls a fraud to get around new rules about short-term rentals. Ravi Kahlon shared a screenshot on social media showing a Vancouver-based rental management company offering $500 to people willing to change the address on their driver’s licence to match an address it selects, then apply for an Airbnb approval. That’s to skirt new rules coming next year that would allow people to offer short-term accommodation only if it’s at their principal residence. Kahlon says anyone considering the offer needs to understand that the scheme is illegal, and those taking part would find themselves in “a lot of trouble for really no gain.”

My real estate rental agent called and now I'm stressing because he didn't leave a text or a voicemail and I'm worried what I might have done wrong or that I'm going to be asked to give access inside the house or any number of things and I hate how stressed and scared I am about this.
I'm gonna have a shower and put on clothes and get into my strong empowered professional woman mindset (nevermind that I don't actually have a job right now) and call him back and deal with whatever it is.
But the little side of me, the broken side of me, just wants to stay curled up in a little ball in bed.
With the housing crisis I can't afford to make any agent or landlord unhappy with me. I live in constant fear of being turfed out and unable to find cheap rental and forced to live in my car.
I specifically bought a Subaru Forester because I like how spacious it is in the back, you could live in it if you became homeless, at least for a bit. And I think that is a damning statement about what it's like being a single woman who rents in Australia, or in many other countries actually, right now. Remember I have my child to think of too.
Anyway. Breathe. He can't kick me out straight away without warning. He probably just wants to confirm getting a tree guy in to remove the dead tree that has been lying on my balcony since the storms around Christmas last year.

Everyone,
It's time to WAKE UP and start asking those in your community how they're going to work to stop build-to-rent communities from becoming a mainstream housing option. This isn’t just an American housing issue either. It's become a problem in Canada, the UK, Ireland, and even Australia. Home developers are no longer looking to invest in building for sale home communities. No, corporations are investigating in housing properties to build with the intent to rent. Forever.
These developments aren't new homes for sale. They're not even rent to own communities. No, they're brand new houses/condos that are being built for the sole purpose of helping corporations make a profit now that commercial real estate has become such an unpredictable market.
Americans are already familiar with the apartment living build-to-rent model that has consumed so much of the housing market that it's just natural. For my European friends, they're shocked to hear just how many apartment buildings are built for the sole purpose of being a permanent rental building. Month to month rent that has already increased nearly 50% in just 5 years.
Don't sit on this issue. Don't buy into the grand scheme that economists put out there that this will help the housing crisis because it won't. All it will do is cripple a consumer's buying power more than it already has been since the pandemic.
Housing 👏 is 👏 not👏 for👏 corporate 👏 gain.
