the downside of being a medievalist is sometimes you keep stumbling across one woman and her family from 700 years ago but none of what they're doing or being said to have makes any sense so you're just there jumping between utter bafflement and infuriation
like why the fuck is a woman who is explicitly a free tenant paying heriot???? that's not how any of this works! why does she have ~120 acres in 1350 and apparently ~240 in 1355????? is she or is she not the woman with the identical and otherwise unheard of forename in the same area from 1308 and, if so, how did she go from transferring her share of their father's land to her brother-in-law to having an entire bloody hide or even two????

"MOVING DAY PASSES," Ottawa Citizen. May 2, 1934. Page 5. ---- Difficulty of Securing Vehicles Proves Only Real Hazard of Period ---- AMUSING SIDELIGHTS ---- Push-carts Piled High With Furniture Requisitioned- Victims of Forced Eviction Housed ---- Yesterday saw the peak of the last minute rush on the part of the unemployed to secure dwelling and many thousands of them were successful, according to reports from various quarters. Although trouble had been expected in several wards it did not materialize except in regard to the difficulty in securing trucks and vans.
In Villeray ward hundreds of un-employed families were unable to secure the necessary transportation for the heavy articles of furniture. On many streets furniture was to be seen on the sidewalks, awaiting something in which it could be moved. Aside from this no trouble occurred and police report that only the usual number of routine complaints in connection with moving were received by them. These consisted of lost articles for the most part.
Alderman J. H. Brien of Rosemount ward stated that there had been no trouble throughout the day. Shortly after the dinner hour 10 five-ton trucks belonging to the city were secured to help move those who had been unable to get anything with which to move beforehand. Arrangements were made to keep there on the job right up to this morning. Only two forced evictions. were reported and both families were placed in new quarters.
During the absence of Alderman Joseph Schubert, of St. Louis 1 ward, who is in New York, his secretary handled all problems which arose. He stated that there was remarkably little trouble in view of what had been expected. Most of the families who had to move were successful in obtaining quarters while others made arrangements to stay where they were for a few days longer.
Yesterday many of the unemployed continued to do their own moving particularly where the distance. between the houses was short. Back lanes in the crowded districts showed almost as much activity as the main streets. A survey of the crowded sections of the city showed that there were almost as many push carts as motor trucks being used for moving.
WOMAN IN TEARS. One woman who was pushing a hand cart along Belanger street burst into tears when one wheel struck a rut, throwing half the contents into the street and breaking a glass jar. A postman who was making his deliveries in the district came to her assistance and helped her to right the load and move on her way.
Many of the unemployed have become excellent jugglers judging by the manner in which the small push carts were piled high with household effects. On top of one such load a large plate glass ass mirror was to be seen. Trailing along behind the cart evidently hoping that the mirror would slip were several small boys who were much amused by the appearance of the load and the manoeuvres of the man pushing it.
A heavily loaded truck on St. Zotique street blew a tire on one of the rear wheels yesterday afternoon. The load of furniture was tilted at a precarious angle but the wheel was successfully jacked up and the tire repaired without the contents being spilled.
A team of horses pulling a drav loaded with furniture ran away and struck an electric light pole. at the corner of St. Lawrence boulevard and St. Catherine street, late yesterday afternoon. Household goods were strewn all over the street but no one was injured.
One gang of unemployed men in Villeray ward succeeded in borrowing a wagon but couldn't secure a horse. They loaded the wagon moderately and pushed and pulled the load themselves making a haul of five city blocks.
About 2.30 o'clock yesterday afternoon there were ten moving vans and trucks on Third avenue, in Rosemount, between Masson and Pandurand streets. At the same time, in the same block, four un employed families were moving their effects bodily. Other streets throughout the city presented similar scenes.
PLIGHT OF REPORTER. Figure it out any way way you It's like a tough spot a young local newspaperman has found himself in.
He was rooming on St. Mark street, and the people he was staying with decided, rather abruptly, to move on May 1, taking the roomer with them to a Mackay street home. They warned him about the move, the day before, but being a newspaperman he did not have time to go and see his new abode.
His landlord gave him the new address-but by mistake gave him the wrong one. So when he finished work at an advanced hour yesterday morning to go "home," he found himself at the wrong a dress. A frantic telephone call to his old home brought no response. Faced with the alternative of ringing every door bell on Mackay street at one a.m. the reporter judged discretion the better part of valor and spent the night at hotel.
Yesterday he was still wondering what to do about it - not knowing the firm which moved the family or any other way of finding his new home. Any suggestions?
ONE OF QUIETEST. After having every man in the police department prepared to cope with any possible trouble, Director Fernand Dufresne, head of the Montreal police, stated late yesterday afternoons that yesterday was one of the quietest May Days in the history of Montreal, Only a few odd groups of men who attempted to demonstrate in front of the offices, of the Unemployment Relief Commission, Ontario Street west, had be dispered while the various squares and public parks in the city were kept clear. Police believe that the seizure of over 50.000 Communist circulars by the anti-Communist squad of the local police department, nipped-in-the-bud a monster demonstration over the weekend, which was to have been held on Victoria Square, Viger Square, and Champs do Mars.
Several calls were made to police headquarters by citizens who stated that trouble was brewing in various sections of the city. Large police automobiles and patrol wagons loaded with men were rushed to each scene, but found only the usual moving day arguments among neighbors. Police on font, mounted, motorcycle, and plainclothesmen and detectives patrolled the city streets and squares, and persons at tempting to gather in groups were quickly dispersed.
Deputy Director C. Barnes, of the police department, was personally in charge of the men, while Lieut. J. Enn's, head of the anti-Communist squad, patrolled the various public balls where Communist meeting were to have taken place. Late last night police reported that no arrests had been made.

Game that's a dating sim/time management style game, but you don't date anyone (or at least if you do, dating isn't the point). The premise is that you've gotten a new entry level job in your dream career in a town that's WAY too expensive for you to live in with zero available rentals, but due to a stroke of amazing luck and a distant family connection, you're able to score a rental in a nice community for a price you can just about handle. The catch is that you have to join the homeowner's association. Your landlord is distant, but expects you to keep in line with the HOA or get evicted.
The game consists of carefully managing your out-of-work time to keep up with the HOA's increasingly stringent list of rules about the appearance and maintenance of your property. If you don't spend enough time on yardwork and maintenance, you'll start to get violation warnings, but you also need to go to community events to avoid getting on the other members' shitlists and making enemies who'll look more critically at your property. You can buy leeway if you spend time schmoozing the other HOA people, helping them with crises, and siding with the more powerful figures in disputes. Your dream career is a background event in your life, focused more on keeping a roof over your head, but if you skip work to tend to HOA stuff you risk getting fired, and conversely if you put in extra hours and do really well you can get bonuses which you can use to pay a professional gardener or housekeeper and free up some more time. The power dynamic in the HOA can change, so be careful putting all your eggs in one basket relationship-wise lest your friends be on the outs and your enemies start looking for ways to get rid of you. But if you change your alleigances too often, you'll get a reputation as a fair weather friend, which can be equally dangerous. Getting too close to someone who ends up in a scandal could tarr you with an equally scandalous reputation, but you won't know what scandals are going on in the neighbourhood . Getting evicted or fired are both, of course, loss conditions, but showing up for work and [honing it in isn't too hard; you've always wanted to work at... uh... whatever it is that you're doing again. Never mind that. The most important thing in your life is making sure that the grass in the front lawn doesn't grow more than half an inch above the prescribed length.

Edith Head designed this incredible pink fur cloak for the Twentieth Century Fox (now Twentieth Century Studios) film 𝑾𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒂 𝑾𝒂𝒚 𝒕𝒐 𝑮𝒐! Although Head was primarily associated with Paramount Studios, the star of 𝑾𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒂 𝑾𝒂𝒚 𝒕𝒐 𝑮𝒐!, Shirley MacLaine, was important enough to be able to request Head be borrowed to work on the film. Her request was granted, and Head created this memorable costume for MacLaine’s character, Louisa May Foster. The budget for the film was one of the biggest that Head had ever been given, exceeding half a million dollars. “In case anyone has forgotten, that was a damn fortune in the early 1960s,” she says in 𝑬𝒅𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝑯𝒆𝒂𝒅’𝒔 𝑯𝒐𝒍𝒍𝒚𝒘𝒐𝒐𝒅. This solves the mystery of why a Paramount designer worked on a Fox studio production, but what about the mystery of how this incredible piece wound up being worn by Ann-Margret for promotional photos for the 1965 MGM film 𝑶𝒏𝒄𝒆 𝒂 𝑻𝒉𝒆𝒊𝒇? It’s possible that after 𝑾𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒂 𝑾𝒂𝒚 𝒕𝒐 𝑮𝒐! ended, that this costume made its way to a rental shop, such as Western Costume.
The Great Blue Hole is located in the waters of the state of Belize. Since this depression is the largest of its kind, UNESCO has included it in the list of world heritage sites that are subject to protection. The Great Blue Hole is a round funnel of regular shape on the ocean floor, which was formed naturally. Its diameter is 305 m, and its depth is 120 m. Accountants associate its formation with the flooding of a system of limestone caves, which occurred when the ocean rose after the last ice age. Over time, their arches collapsed, and a funnel was formed.
Until relatively recently, there was a more romantic version of its formation. Allegedly, this is a huge vessel in which people of ancient civilizations kept something very valuable. This myth was dispelled by J.-Y. Cousteau, who confirmed the theory of the natural formation of the hole.
This place is very popular with divers: it is among the 10 best places for this kind of activity. To dive, you need to swim 96 km, which will take up to 2 hours, so you need to get here by boat. Their rental in the local port of San Pedro is a very popular service. Diving into the crater, adventure lovers can visit flooded caves with stalactites and stalagmites. You need to be very careful: the cave system is very confusing and it is easy to get lost: the second, unofficial, name that this place has earned is the Divers' Cemetery.
Those who are interested in fauna, as well as divers with insufficient diving experience, should stay relatively close to the surface, where the fish lead an active lifestyle. This layer does not exceed 30 meters. In the water, you can observe sea turtles, harmless nurse sharks, groupers, groupers and other smaller fish. This depth is quite comfortable for divers - the temperature does not fall below 24 ° C.
It is worth looking at it from above: a fascinating spectacle. That is why helicopter excursions are arranged for wealthy tourists. And for the most extreme ones – a parachute jump over the Hole.

I once told a story on here where I “crossed some grass between some houses” and one American guy commented “You mean you went into someone’s backyard?”
It was just one comment so maybe it was just one weird guy but he made it sound like common areas are rare in villages/the suburbs?
I live in a version of this
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We call them rowhouses and they’re one of the most common house types in Denmark. I live in a rental version but you can also buy them. They’re like a step up from an apartment if you want your own little private garden but don’t mind sharing walls with strangers, but they also have a ton of grassy areas in between them where you can do whatever. The common areas are kept by a housing association/the landlords who often plant fruit and nut trees and berry bushes for people to forage from. For example, my area has a long strip running through the village entirely made up of fruit and nut trees just for people to eat from. And by that I don’t mean it’s only for the renters or members of the housing association. Anyone can have them.
So yeah, when I wrote that story it didn’t occur to me that large green areas that aren’t parks might not be common? Or maybe they are and that one guy was just weird?

"CITIZENS MUST REGISTER ALL SPARE LIVING SPACE," Toronto Star. October 10, 1942. Page 2. ----- Restricted Areas Likely To Be Forced to Accept Roomers --- RELIEVE CONGESTION ---- Registration of all extra available living space will be compulsory on the part of the house holder Mayor Conboy announced today upon his return from Ottawa. He indicated that restricted areas, such as Rosedale, would be forced to take in roomers under plans now in preparation. The department of real property administration will then be in a position in advise what should be done in the public interest," he added. The mayor and Con. Lewis Duncan went to Ottawa yesterday to confer with government officials on the housing shortage here. Mayor Conboy said the registration would be carried out by Russell Smart, real property administrator of the federal government. with the assistance of various women's organizations.
"It will be a continuation of the canvas we inaugurated here some weeks ago in which we planned to ascertain the number of rooms and flats, unoccupied at present, in private dwellings," his worship added.
Mayor Conboy brought back confirmation that Norman Long of the Toronto Property Owners association had been appointed deputy to Mr. Smart. An earlier report that Mr. Long was slated for the post prompted the advisory committee: on housing appointed by the city council to priest the appointment on the grounds the new deputy was against public housing.
The mayor issued the following statement on his trip:
"The situation is now clarified. When the appointment of Mr. Smart was announced it was thought that this department would make a survey of the housing needs of a community and be in a position in recommend the number of units that should be built apparent that this new department be of no will be no assistance in enabling a municipality make such a determination Council and Wartime Housing will follow the plan previrusly arranged whereby the city will provide Wartime Housing with such information as it can obtain relative to the total need and various ways outside of new public construction whereby the seed can be met. Wartime Housing can then decide what contribution it can make. The primary consideration is to see that our people are properly housed but care should be taken to preserve the building trade if at all possible and maintain Jobs at proper wages for the large number of men, bricklayers, carpenters and others who are efficient at this work but unable to industries take positions in war. "We learned while in Ottawa that loans will be made available to convert stores into living apartments providing there are other housing units in the building. Nearly all our stores having living quarters above them. We will immediately complete the assembling of the information needed for Wartime Housing and I will make a strenuous effort to effect an arrangement whereby private builders will be able to secure sufficient building material to enable them to continue in business. "Sufficient money is available for construction under the National Housing and the Home Improvement and Extension Act. The difficulty lies in securing supplies. Thought should be given now to public permanent housing but it will not solve our immediate difficulty. It will be spring before houses can be made ready under this plan."
Mayor Conboy said that until that time every other means. such as private building. temporary wartime building and conversion of stores into dwellings and private homes into duplexes and triplexes. would have to be utilized,
