Call Me by Fire 4
The performances from the 3rd Concert (4th Round) that impressed me the most
🔥 1. "Upstream" by Shi Kai, Aruna, and Jing Long
youtube
High-energy song + martial-arts beat-down live onstage. A group of thieves (played by Shi Kai and Jing Long) has finished a successful heist and is back in their lair when another group (Aruna) shows up to steal their loot.
This moves too fast to screencap properly, and there weren't any action photos from the production team's photographers, so, please: JUST WATCH THE VIDEO! And Jing Long's (on couch) vocal fluctuations are💯
Did Aruna intimidate official group leader Shi Kai into doing this? Yes. Was it worth it? Absolutely!
🔥 2. "Cage" by Reno Wang, Allen Lin, Evan Yo, Nine
youtube
⚠Warning! Dark themes. Depictions of sui/cide (censoring to avoid the bot), abuse, drowning
The themes are really dark, but the performance is extremely well done and impressive. Reno Wang and Allen Lin play musicians who keep their composer (Nine) and violinist (Evan Yo) locked up in a dungeon and abuse them, until the composer jumps into a water vault to end it all.
Note: Nine is a certified diver and knows how to do this safely. And he seemed very happy to do it. "I can stay in there longer! :D" Others: "NO!" Producer: "And you CAN'T laugh while you're in there!" Nine: "OK OK"
🔥 3. "D-I-S-C-O" by Liang Long, Jerry Yuan, and Jason
youtube
For all the previous one was dark, this one's light and wholesome, and definitely catchy!
Rivals-to-Friends trope! Liang Long and Jason play an older and younger actor, respectively. They look down on each other and just Do Not get along. Jerry Yuan plays their agent. Then they have a disco-dance-off and become friends.
Scores, for the curious, as comment to avoid spoilers.

Film geek Josh is looking for the subject of his new documentary when a chance meeting puts the perfect star in his sights—Dylan, his school’s most popular junior. But Dylan’s hopes of using the film to become Blossom Queen don’t quite match with Josh’s goal to make a hard-hitting exposé about popularity. Will Josh shoot the film as planned, or show Dylan as the truly interesting person she is? Credits: TheMovieDb. Film Cast: Dylan Schoenfield: Sarah Hyland Josh Rosen: Matt Prokop Hannah: Vanessa Morgan Amy Loubalu: Sasha Pieterse Lola: Lili Simmons Nicole Paterson: Andrea Brooks Asher: Jordan A. Shapiro Casting: Jason La Padura Director of Photography: Robert Brinkmann Co-Producer: Brian Zeilinger-Goode Visual Effects Supervisor: Dan Schmit Supervising Sound Editor: Mark Friedgen Costume Design: Rebekka Sorensen Movie Reviews: Reno: **Student film festival meets beauty pageant.** I’m one of those guys who does not believe chick films are for girls alone, actions are for men, as well as magic films for kids. I watch them all, well, at least I admit that. So, not in my childhood, but overall I’ve seen many DCOM and I’ve liked many of them. This film came half a decade ago, I was aware of it, but only now I had watched it and it got me by surprise. I thought it would me another mean girl tale, that’s where I was wrong. Well, in the initial few minutes, that’s how it looked, but everything has changed since the beginning of the second act. That was the biggest plus point of this film. Even though predictable scenes, still it felt good enough. The character transformation, the way it was done was very smart. At one stage you hate, then a soft corner develops. It is a television film, but that’s not how it looked. The quality of the story was like a theatrical film. If they had risked on that, they definitely would have succeeded. I would say a bad decision by the production house, but still the product delivered more than its expectation. The casting was good, All of them were new face to me, except Sasha Pieterse. Expecting a sequel for a good/successful film is so common with its fans. I thought about the same, but seems they are not interesting in one which was kind of confirmed in the end itself. Even though if they decide to make, it won’t be as good as this one. Because the main story, all happened in here. Just like ‘Taken’ which is very powerful original film, not suitable for followups. This is a silly concept, but very nice film. I totally suggest it. _8/10_

Dear Xiao Zhan & Wang Yibo,
Hi. You don't know me because I am a slightly eccentric, white, retired lady with a spoiled Shih Tzu and dubious eyesight...but i digress.
As you two may recall, you both shot to fame in The Untamed (or CQL, as you probably know it better).
I watched your show in 2022, at which time I could not spell Beijing, let alone find it on a map.
Actually, it turns out - amusingly enough - i had the entire country of China in the wrong place in the map in my head (the same one where Reno NV is 5 miles from Las Vegas)!
I had China & Mongolia and Siberia/Russia completely flipped about. Who knew the Himalayas weren't near Shanghai! Not me!
Anyway,
Where was I? Oh, your live drama series. I'm a pushover for cute people in hanfu. And, see, I know translations are tricky to do well & can be awful (looking at you, Netflix).
So, i thought to myself, oh, it was somewhere in Episode 20 (around the time i wanted to punch Wei Ying in the face for being mean to Lan Zhan who had just spent 3 looooonng months in the wilderness with Jiang Cheng, aka "Grumpy Bro").
I thought: Self, if you could learn a bit of modern Chinese, you wouldn't be dependent on subtitles!
Yes! A brilliant idea!
And then i thought: Self, if you knew some Chinese history and some things about Chinese politics and culture, both ancient & modern, why if you did that, the drama (and Lan Zhan's speech patterns) would make more sense!
So, i hit the library. I googled. I watched history vids. I read articles.
And here we are, 2 years later, and I am still clueless why calling Lan Zhan "gege" (elder brother) is such a turn- on, but then, I don't get all the biting either. I just roll with it. Kind of like Wei Ying.
Fun fact: The Yangtze River is 6300 km long. It flows from a height of 5 km in the mountains all the way to Shanghai, where it dumps into the ocean in the same place it has for the last 11 million years. Except the Three Gorges Dam (built on ancient earthquake subsidence and fault lines) is stopping the silt from flowing into the area, so eventually poor Shanghai is going to sink beneath the rising tides of climate change. (Sure hope you guys don't own real estate there. Unless you want to swim in your livingroom).
Then there were oracle bones, the meaning of li, Confucious, chengyu, & the entire Han Dynasty, which gave me my favorite emperor, who is (given name) Liu Bang (劉邦). He was not a noble or even gentry. He schmoozed his way, more or less, into a job as a county deputy sheriff who was kind of lazy and drank a lot. A screw up (probably his) in a group prisoner transfer led to him becoming a war lord & then emperor of China. What's not to love!
So, thanks for it all, guys. I started out just wanting to fan girl you, and now I'm at least half-way into an associate degree in China, um, stuff. A bit eccentric of me, yes, but it keeps me off the streets and out of the pool halls, so i can't complain.

Seok: HY-UN-G~ Que vas a hacer el 24 en la noche? (?)

Music as a Journey
By Stephanie Wang
Music is often referred to as healing for the soul, and it is one of my biggest art passions. From sitting at my keyboard to enacting a one-woman-no-audience concert, I love music. Sometimes, the different combinations of melodies and harmonies wrap around my ears like a blanket and tell me that everything will be okay. Other times, the beats are pounding at me to get up and dance. Since COVID-19 and quarantine occurred, life has become quite a bit more stressful. I've found music to be very comforting because the lyrics, melodies, and all the other intricacies of a piece are somehow able to do what I sometimes cannot - express my emotions.
Harvard Health has an article that explains how the music you choose to listen to can influence your emotions because of how music interacts with our brain. Psychology Today explains that the enjoyment of music is processed in the same region our brain processes other things that bring us joy. From the musical aspect, the simplest explanation for this reaction is due to the musical modes in a piece of music. At its most basic form, happy music is often referred to as being in a major scale, while sad, slow music is often found in a minor scale.
A study performed at the University of Toronto, Mississauga also found that a listener's moods are able to change based on "their perceptions of the emotions conveyed by the music." This study used happiness cues based on the major or minor scales of music while also including variables on the rhythmic levels of music consisting of fast or slow beats. Faster rhythms were associated with more happiness cues while slower beats corresponded to more sadness ratings. This certainly explains why WALK THE MOON's “Shut up and Dance” always makes me do exactly what the title suggests - it has a major key and a fast beat!
Additionally, Stanford conducted a study that reported how rhythm impacts our brain. Stronger or slower beats stimulate different types of brainwaves that can influence our mood. According to the University of Nevada, Reno, the most relaxing music sits at about 60 beats per minute. In fact, beats per minute even influences our heart rate by increasing or slowing down depending on the music listened to.
Ever wonder why “Stayin' Alive” is often taught to be hummed when performing CPR? It's because the song has a tempo of 103 beats per minute, which is within the American Heart Association's guidelines to have CPR performed around 100 - 120 compressions per minute. Compressing to this beat, or any song with a tempo within that range, will help keep blood flowing to the brain and the heart while providing enough time for the heart chambers to refill.
Since music has always been dear to me, I'm sharing that love of music in the form of curated, and potentially themed, playlists. Here's a playlist featuring contemporary instrumental pieces that each have the power to take me on a journey.
