Really into the episode of Ouran where this girl confesses her love to Mori but he doesn’t feel the same because he’s into Honey and the girl’s reaction is just like YIPPEE I LOVE YAOI THATS SO COOL FOR YOU YAY 🥰
#the klock keeps ticking#ouran high school host club#i watched ouran when i was 13 and repressed ah the classic experience yes yes#and i always said id rewatch but never did. until now cuz im going through something#im like halfway through and yeah id say theres quite a lot that ages like milk lol#like mostly just the way haruhi is treated is just. bad lol#a good thing is i like how haruhi personally feels about their own gender where they really honestly dont fucking care#which was a big relief cuz similar cases will have the ‘secret girl’ character either be really defensive#or you know. be like a naoto where its actually just the most uncomfortable thing ever#but the problem is the way that tamaki and occasionally the twins are like really obsessed with the girl thing#and constantly want haruhi to take on a feminine role cuz that wouldnt threaten their sexuality as much#tamaki in general is written so fucking weird lol and i do remember being based back then and hating him#and i never liked him with haruhi like im sorry hes just the worst option#hes capable of being funny when hes not being weird but I think he still ends up feeling horribly written#like when hes having his DRAMATIC LOVE INTEREST moments they just feel so horribly out of place#and theyre often times just badly aged tropes also the way haruhi is written in relation to the other members is weird#like i can see why theyd like the other characters but ive not really seen any reasons for them to like tamaki#but then the show will just randomly be like ‘oh yes haruhi thinks tamaki is a lovely person’ and its like. ooookay?#its ass lol and im probably preaching to the choir but like. haruhi is way better with a woman right?#i just know some desperate ass bastards have made some haruhi/renge content and i get it#other than that stuff i dont like i will say i enjoy what exists outside of the weird haruhi stuff#i like the characters and the concept is very funny and the episodes where everyone is normal are charming#and you know i gotta appreciate it for the impact it had on lame ass gay people even if the queer content is messy#ouran was just like. what we had for a long time. or at least was the most popular anime that featured queerness in some positive capacity#but also like. as it goes with this stuff once youve gotten to see better representation#you look back and youre like wow. im so fucking glad we can do better than this dogshit 😩

you could also answer for any of the other host club members since I'm curious about those too!
The entire Host Club + Renge, Nekozawa, Kasanoda, Reiko, Mei, and maybe Arai are all a Polycule to Me and any combination of them is Great.

renge might be my favorite minor character and it has absolutely nothing to do with her being voiced by monica rial absolutely nothing at all because renge is nothing like kirika, she's basically a female hifumi. ish.

[INBOX] @kirakiras asked:
Fingers rest on chin as she notes the posters plastered on this shop's windows, advertising the newest series in a seemingly recurring phenomenon of re-imagining historical figures as 2d girls. She wonders about the number of people whose first introduction to nobunaga oda might have been this sort of image. It could pique deeper interest on the subject, she supposes. Or is it meant to pique the interest of those already familiar with the subject? She voices a thought. “hmm…do you think they would feel a sense of pride? Or would it feel like a curse to have their name carried on this long?” -for renge hii!!!
𝐔𝐍𝐏𝐑𝐎𝐌𝐏𝐓𝐄𝐃 // always accepting !!
Her gaze is wholly focused on the exact same poster of another historical-fantasy game release that Kimiko was intently observing at, only to shift her focus at Kimiko herself as the girl raised a question that is seemingly meant as a casual musing at this whole male-historical-figure-being-reimagined-as-a-girl phenomenon. It is already quite common at this point, so she doesn’t really find herself surprised or unused to the sight.
An arm folded below her chest, supporting one elbow of the other while a hand stroked her own chin in thought. “I wouldn’t say they’d think it negatively, buuuut… girls aren’t exactly the luckiest people back in the Warring States. If we were actually there back then, they’d say we’re like bad omens and that girls shouldn’t go to the battlefield! They even said that a girl shouldn’t be touching a guy’s armor and helmet before a battle because it’ll bring bad luck to the owner. So maybe… just maaaaybe, some of them would say… it’s a curse?” Truly not the best era to live in as someone who’s just a girl.
“Though if you’re speaking specifically about Oda Nobunaga-sama, I’d say he’d be more than happy to turn into or be reincarnated as a sexy woman.” Her gaze raises up again to look at the tall && voluptuous dark-haired woman with crimson-colored eyes at the poster. “Especially one who’s exuding such a five-star girlboss aura like this. He’d think of those brand-new assets as a powerful weapon…” She could already predict how popular that version of Nobunaga be when the game is released. A must-pull character for sure.
Tumblr media
“But if you ask me personally Kimi-chan, I’d rather have some stay as they are as men! But prettier! Like Abe no Seimei-sama or Date Masamune-sama for example,” she grins at the thought. “There’s nothing wrong with that, right? Riiiight?”

Patience: ~Attack of the Lady Manager!~
Tumblr media Tumblr media
➼ pairing: Kyoya Ootori x Reader ➼ summary: A girl weaves her way into the host club looking to steal your life, starting with your job and moving to your fiance ➼ what to expect: "believe it or not I'm not the heartless person you think I am" ➼ warnings: renge? angst ➼ Part Three | Part Five
Tumblr media
“Oh, Tamaki, my dearest Tamaki, why are you so beautiful?”
Tamaki smirks softly, “I’m hoping to catch your eye, even for just one second.” Tamaki apprises elegantly.
“And why is your voice so very sweet and mellow?” a different guest, this time.
“To set your nerves at ease, so that my true feelings might reach your heart.” the response is almost immediate, practiced.
“Why are your eyes filled with tears every time you look at me?”
Teary eyed, even now, “Because the sight of your beautiful smile causes the fountain inside me to start overflowing.”
“Oh, Tamaki~!”
You shake your head through a laugh as you watched Tamaki carries out his usual spiel "Do you ever wonder how on earth Tamaki comes up with this stuff?" You think allowed.
Kyoya hums in agreement, not looking up from his notebook. "he always has had a natural affinity for this kind of stuff, although I must admit some particular lines he comes up with I will never understand where he pulls them from"
"Hello Kyoya, I can't get over how great you look in that Kimono" two guests appear next to where the two of you were sat "Are you planning on releasing anymore picture books of the host club?"
"Unfortunately we don't have anything planned at present ladies" The guests move on with a pout "Oh, Kyoya!" You joke, faking to fawn over him, raising your hand to your forehead "If I didn't know better I would think you a guest"
"You wish, I'm afraid you're obligated to give me your time for free" I taunt, returning to going over the clubs events calendar for that month. "What do you think?" handing over the calendar for him to confirm whether or not it's in line with the club's budget.
Kyoya's face lights up at the sight of the calendar, scanning over its contents "This is...really good...you do a much better job than Tamaki at organising this stuff"
"Really?" kyoya seems lost in thought for a moment, smiling a little at the page "Yeah..."
"Looks like the host club has a brand-new guest." the two of you look up to find a girl hiding in the doorway catching the attention of the hosts.
the twins appear suddenly in front of her, Kaoru offering her a rose.
“Come on in, what are you waiting for?”
“Watching from afar is no fun.” Hikaru presents her with another rose.
Where they got the roses? No one could ever tell.
“Please, Miss.” they insist, leaning forward ever so slightly. The girl makes a small sound of surprise.
“Stop that, how many times do I have to tell you to be more courteous to our first-time guests?” Tamaki presents her with yet another identical rose.
“Please, you don’t have to be afraid, my princess.” Tamaki caresses her chin with his finger, she seems afraid despite his affirmations, “I welcome you to the Ouran Host Club.”
The girl’s hand flies across Tamaki’s cheek as she shoves him away, “No! Don’t touch me! You’re phony!” She screams.
The entire host club observes with a collective gasp, wide eyes watching the scene unfold.
Tamaki staggers from the impact and covers his reddening face with his palm, “What do you mean I’m phony?!” He panics, his voice muffled.
“Just what I said! You’re phony! I find it hard to believe that someone like you is the prince character of this host club!”
Tamaki back-peddles from her accusing finger and loud volume with panicked breathing, to which you flinch at gently.
“You shouldn’t go spreading your love around so easily like that, you stupid! You must be a dimwitted narcissist! You’re incompetent! You’re a commoner! You’re disgusting!”
One strike after another to Tamaki’s ego, and he finally keels over.
He’s created a new technique!”
“One man slow-motion!”
You stand over Tamaki, just slightly in front of Kyoya, who seems deep in thought.
“I don’t suppose… you are…?”
Kyoya doesn’t get to finish his thought before the strange girl is gasping with a high pitch, her eyes welling up with tears and her face morphing into amazement.
“It’s you, Kyoya!” She shrieks, shoving you roughly out of her way, to which you grunt as Haruhi catches you by both arms.
“What on earth-?”
The girl forces herself into Kyoya’s arms in a strangling embrace, her face buried into his kimono.
“Oh, how I’ve longed to meet you! My one and only prince charming!” she squeals obnoxiously.
You stood stunned slightly off the side, having no idea what was going on, your breath hitching in your throat as you make eye contact with Kyoya in a mutual glance of helplessness.

“Your fiancé?" Hikaru questioned
"Kyoya-Senpai?” Kaoru following soon behind.
You sat in the corner of the room watching everything unfold, you did not know what to think. Was there something that you hadn't been told? Did your father break off your engagement? Had Kyoya been arranged to marry another? Surely you wouldn't still be in Japan if that was the case.
You look off to your left as you realise that Tamaki is sulking in a similar fashion to you. "Why is he sulking?" Hikaru questioned
"Because mommy kept a secret from daddy" Kaoru answered teasingly. "Whatever. Why does everyone refer to us like we're husband and wife?" Kyoya asked, gaze slowly being adverted as his attention was slowly being pulled to you, sat at a table in the corner having a cup of coffee by yourself.
"Ours is a story of love at first sight!” Renge announces, fawning over the 'memory' which was when you caught on that something even weirder was happening, Kyoya could have another arranged fiance but if you knew one thing it was that Kyoya was not in love.
“I couldn’t resist the way you were adoring those flowers in the backyard when you thought no one else was looking! And how sweet it was when you reached out to that poor little injured kitten!”
“Are you serious? Could you have the wrong person?” You gesture violently to Kyoya standing adjacent to you, clearly not the man she was describing.
“No way! I could recognize my love anywhere!” Renge near screams in your face. Kyoya staring blankly next to you
“He’s a gentleman who’s kind to everyone but doesn’t ask for anything in return! He likes solitude but, in fact, sometimes he gets lonely!”
"Okay now I know we aren't talking about the same person" You chimed in, not expecting Kyoya to shoot you what may have been the first look of hurt that you had seen off of him.
"He looks like the star of the dating sim Uki-Doki Memorial! You’re my real life Ichijo Miyabi!” Renge finally squeals out, allowing the hosts to realize she was delusional, erasing their confusion.
“Oh, alright. She’s delusional.” Your expression relaxes when you realize that Kyoya isn’t hiding a secret fiancé behind everyone’s back.
“Uki-”
“Doki-”
“OTAKU!” Tamaki screeches in panic.
“OTAKU?!” Hikaru gasps in astonishment.
“I’VE NEVER SEEN ONE!” Kaoru wails.
Kyoya’s now seated on the same sofa, once again, deep in thought.
“I get it now, you’re in love with that character. You’re projecting that love onto me and somehow deluded yourself into thinking that we’re engaged.” Kyoya explains as Renge skips around behind him with obnoxious squealing.
“I assume this Miyabi character probably wears glasses as well.” On cue, Kyoya adjusts his glasses.
“So she… made it up? You’re not really her fiancé, right?” Tamaki holds his breath in hope.
“Well no, I don’t ever remember asking for her hand in marriage.” Kyoya shrugs “Besides, this is the first time I’ve ever met the woman.” Kyoya crosses his arms casually.
You stood with you arms crossed behind the sofa he was sat on "...Not to mention you're already engaged?" you pointed out the obvious.
Renges frolicking came to a grinding halt "Already...engaged?" you did not know whether or not you should shatter this illusion of hers. "Yes! y/n and kyoya-senpai are engaged!" Honey chimed in with no regard for the consequences.
"You!" Renge screamed in your face "What do you know about MY Kyoya? He doesn't deserve you! He's going to marry me!" she rambled at a hundred miles a minute. You exchange a concerned glance with Kyoya.
"Uh...I..." She seemed to quickly forget about you, jumping in front of Kyoya . According to my research, I understand that you’re in charge of managing the club, is that true, Kyoya?”
“That’s right! Kyo-Chan is our director!” Honey confirms.
“You’re the club’s director? That’s perfect! Oh wow, I’ve always wanted to wear a sandwich board to advertise a business!” Renge squeals.
“We… don’t advertise, we’re just a host club.” you point out, becoming increasingly bothered at her presence. Ignoring you, Renge spins with determination, “I’ve made up my mind! From now on, I’m gonna be the manager of this host club!”
You paused, getting increasingly frustrated at her presence, but before you go to tell her that you're already the manager Kyoya grabs your upper arm, leaning in to whisper "The Houshakuji family are incredibly good friends with both of our fathers, we just have to play into this for a while until I can figure something out"
"You're okay with this?" You question, raising an eyebrow "I'd rather not but believe it or not I'm not the heartless person you think I am, I can play it off for a while" You didn't expect Kyoya to throw your words back in your face, leaving you stunned.
♡        ♡        ♡        ♡        ♡        ♡        ♡        ♡        ♡        ♡        ♡
“I thought about it a lot last night, and maybe having another lady manager isn’t such a bad idea.”
“Here we go.” you roll your eyes at Tamaki’s assessment.
“Why do you say that?” The twins urge.
“Well, it’s fairly obvious, isn’t it? Renge just transferred into the same class as Haruhi. So, if Haruhi has a girlfriend around, it could bring out the female within her. Renge’s girlish air of tenderness might be able to stimulate Haruhi’s own sense of femininity!”
"I swear it's like I don't exist sometimes" You mutter looking around to see if anyone else was going to call it out, Haruhi laughs a little "You'd think that given that I need to not let people know I'm a girl he wouldn't want me to gain more femininity."
“Now is our chance to help Haruhi get in touch with her feminine side! This is an important project, men. She doesn’t have any friends in class right now except for these two shady twins. That’s no good for her.” Tamaki urges. “Like you have room to talk.” The twins tilt their heads.
“Hey everyone!” Renge soon enters the room much to your dismay. “You’ll be happy to know that your new manager, Renge, has baked all of you some cookies!”
Tamaki fawns over the act “Isn’t she ladylike? I’m so moved by your generosity!” she swoons.
“I didn’t bake these cookies for you, you phony prince.” she denied him, Tamaki returns to sulking in a corner.
Renge plants herself in front of Kyoya, “I’m sorry I burnt them a little bit. I did the best I could.” she stares up at him with wide heart eyes.
“And I already know what you’re going to say. Oh, you’re always so sweet to me, Kyoya!”
Honey tries a cookie near you, “She wasn’t kidding, these cookies really are burnt.” He grimaces.
Mori appears behind him, “Don’t eat that Mitsukuni, it’s bad for you.” he informs. Renge, enraged, chases them around the room noisily. “She’s scaring me!” Honey cries, carried by Mori as they flee from Renge’s raging rampage.
On the other side of the room the twins sit scheming, Hikaru whispering to Kaoru "Have you noticed that y/n and Kyoya haven't said a word to each other all day?"
Kaoru looks over to the two of you, a noticable distance in between "I can't imagine that she is too happy with Renge coming in and trying to steal her life"Hikaru adds on"And Kyoya seems way too complicit with it all"
As if they shared a mutual light bulb moments the two of them exchange smug smirks as they get an idea "We should push them in the right direction"
Hikaru approaches you to take the cookie that you had just picked up from your hand and puts back into your mouth, lifting your chin with his fingers.
“May I try?” he bites into the cookie while still in your mouth. Your cheeks flush as half the cookie is still perched between your lips, unsure of where this came from.
This managed to grab Kyoya's attention, looking up from his notebook for the first time of the day.
Kaoru slides a hand behind your neck, “Uh oh, y/n, you’ve got crumbs on your face.” His tongue slides out and streaks across your cheek to lick up the crumbs. You whimper and squint your eyes shut at the proximity, hoping that whatever the twins were doing would end soon.
Kyoya’s grip on his pen tightens as Tamaki emerges from his corner in a fury.
“Did you see what they just did?!” Tamaki screaches and points at the twins. “He took a bite of the cookie while it was in her mouth! And then the other one licked her face! What are they doing?! I told you those shady twins can’t be trusted! They’re trying to seduce her!”
You rub your cheek gently “You know you could have just told me and I would’ve wiped it off.” your face contorting in disgust. You look to Hikaru, “And if you wanted to try one, there’s plenty here.” You gesture with the bag of cookies.
Tamaki takes a sharp intake of breath, sounding similar to a snort, grabbing your face urgently, “That’s not the way you’re supposed to react, y/n! You have to stay strong and reject them, then casually brush them to the side! Do you understand?!”
“This is sexual harassment, Tamaki.” You snort, crossing your arms.
“SEXUAL HARASSMENT?! If that counts as sexual harassment then they’re twice as guilty! Someone call the police!”
“Cut it out, Boss, we’re sorry!” The twins plead, the fear of god being sent into them.
Renge watches the scene with a scowl. Honey approaches her cautiously.
“Renge-Chan, Renge-Chan! Want some? It’s milk.” He presents her with a pink cup with a bunny imprinted on the side.
Renge ponders a moment, “Lukewarm…”
“Huh?”
“Every single one of you! Except for Kyoya, all of your characters are lukewarm! Each of you needs to have some sort of dark side, you understand? Girls are vulnerable to handsome young men who are troubled! If you keep carrying on like this, it’s only a matter of time before the girls get tired of you and stop coming altogether! Are you trying to ruin my precious Kyoya’s business?! As your manager, it’s my duty to change your character backgrounds! Let’s start with you!”
"Change their character backgrounds? They're people not video game characters" you spoke up. Renge paused, slowly turning to face you with a look of horror "GET OUT!" she screams.
Your eyes widen, taken aback a little, you go to reply but in doing so you make eye contact with kyoya, silently reminding you of why you can't offend Renge "Fine. I'm just going to go" You can hear Honey calling after you as you leave the host club.
♡        ♡        ♡        ♡        ♡        ♡        ♡        ♡        ♡        ♡        ♡
How you ended up on the movie set you have no idea, the last thing you wanted was to be was around Renge or even Kyoya, but somehow since you are part of the host club officially you have to be on set for insurance reasons.
You ended up standing behind Kyoya as the two of you watch Haruhi play out a scene "You know she won't stop right?" The words come out before you get the chance to stop them. Kyoya hummed in question, turning around to face you. "The longer that you play into this fantasy shes created the more that shes going to believe its real, she wont stop by herself"
Kyoya paused, thinking it over "We've spoken about this, if we offend her-"
"Her taking offence and her father taking offence are two different things, our families are close enough for him to know that you already have an engagement he will understand" you wanted to point out that it was likely her father already knew about her delusions but that was by the by.
Kyoya looked at you pointedly "You really don't like her, do you?" you roll your eyes "I- Not really, but it's beyond that really, i... of course I know that she can't just break the deal between our parents but if that ever happens I have to leave Japan...and I just don't want that to happen"
Kyoya can tell that there is a little more to that story but he figures that it's for another time. The two of you look over as the movie set goes haywire "I know you don't care either way...but I need this deal as much as my father does"
"She doesn't have that much sway" he dismissed, waving you away "You really do not care do you?" the question caught him off guard, his eyes widening in shock before quickly pulling himself together "What do you mean?"
"If Renge carries on as she is, the host club is gonna be torn apart, she's already taken over, I've been pushed out so there's no need for me to be around anymore. Honey's on verge of a breakdown because this new persona she's given goes completely against who he is. i know you only do something if it benefits you but I am asking you just this once to at least pretend like you care"
Kyoya fell silent, looking out at how miserable the club members are , he wants to tell you that he does care, that he doesn't want the club to get torn apart or the engagement to breakdown, but he can't bring himself to.
As an argument breaks out on set Kyoya walks away without another word, grabbing a rock off the ground before smashing the camera lens. "no! what did you do to my camera?"
"What? Is something wrong?" Renge asks innocently.
"I'm terribly sorry but i cannot allow this to go on any longer, this movie paints the host club in a bad light and frankly the position you are trying to take was already filled long ago."
You didn't expect Kyoya to take such a drastic action but it made sense right up till he mentioned you. Why?
"I think you've caused enough trouble around here Renge. Please stop being such a pest"
Renge breaks out into tears "A pest? But you're supposed to pat me on the head and tell me not to worry! You're supposed to be kind and affectionate Kyoya! Why are you acting any differently now! Tell me why!"
"Because that's not the real Kyoya" Tamai chimes in, Renge gasps, breaking down before him. "Does it really matter?" Haruhi asks, appearing in front of her. "Who cares if Kyoya is a little different than you expected him to be. Take a good look at the person inside, and get to know him little by little. It’s a lot more fun that way.”
You lock eyes with Kyoya, realising that why he hadn't noticed how much you cared, you didn't either. Kyoya doesn't show feelings, you know that, but he is kind, just in his own way. If he wasn't he wouldn't have sat with you at the ball, or help you in the clinic, or step in.
Maybe you needed to start following Haruhi's advice.
♡        ♡        ♡        ♡        ♡        ♡        ♡        ♡        ♡        ♡        ♡
Hello, ladies, come on in.” Tamaki encourages from his position with the other hosts on the sofa.
“I bought the video of that film you made!”
“I bought it too!”
“And so did I!”
“Huh?” The host club choruses in confusion as the girls fawn over the professionally produced film.
“That scene in the rain was just phenomenal!”
“I love the lonely prince!”
“And the loving relationship between Hikaru and Kaoru is so sweet!”
“I couldn’t get enough of Haruhi’s poignant expression!”
Tamaki’s hair covers his eyes with a prominent frown. “Kyoya?” He grumbles, not needing to say much more to elicit a response from said host, throwing his head back to where the two of you were sat on opposite ends of a sofa.
“I may have broken the camera’s lens but the footage that we had already shot wasn’t damaged. Naturally, I did cut out that last scene. Sales have been pretty good so far, that Hollywood film crew did a fantastic job. But then I guess, that’s to be expected.”
You laughed under your breath, shaking your head, glad that the host club was back to normal now. "Something amusing?" He asked, looking over to you. "Nothing"
the two of you fell into a comfortable silence before you speak up once more "I should thank you, for shutting down Renge" you eventually concede. "It was no problem, besides, you are a much better manager than she was"
You hummed back, watching Tamaki have another breakdown "I don't know why I thought she could actually replace me, I don't know what you guys would do without me sometimes" he laughed.
"Indeed"

Lavender for Royalty; Sage for Wisdom (Book 1) Chapter Four
Kyoya Ootori x Reader
Chapter Four: Abatina for Fickleness
Summary: Renge arrives at the Host Club and brings chaos with her.
“Welcome,” said the Host Club. They all wore yukatas in various floral designs and smiles for the guests. “And peace to you in the months ahead.”
Today’s theme for the Host Club was “spring” despite the cold weather. After all, how else to warm the hearts of their guests?
l
“You look so nice, (Y/N),” said a guest, smiling widely.
“Thank you,” said (Y/N). They sat with their guests in a sage green yukata stitched with dark green leaves overtop. A few flower pins sat in their hair. “But I’m sure you’d look better.” They unpinned one of the flowers, leaned over, and slid it into a guest’s hair—her face promptly turned red. (Y/N) smiled. “I was right.”
The girls squealed and grabbed each other as the one with the flower nearly fainted. “Me next, me next!”
“There’s plenty of flowers for everyone,” said (Y/N) gently.
“Wow, (Y/N)-senpai, that was impressive,” said Haruhi, blinking as she walked by.
“Everyone likes to feel special, Haruhi,” said (Y/N). “It’s no secret.”
“At least you’re not using fake tear—”
Hikaru and Kaoru covered Haruhi’s mouth before she could finish speaking.
“It’s just one of the tricks of the trade,” said Hikaru.
“Girls just melt at the sight of tearful eyes,” said Kaoru.
            “But you’re scamming them—”
“Here!” Hikaru pushed a small box into Haruhi’s hands. “An uncommon, expensive, tea snack, just for you.”
“For me, really?” Haruhi looked at it.
“Are you fond of them, Haruhi?” said the guests.
“No, I don’t care for sweets, but…” Haruhi smiled softly. “It would make a nice offering for my mother.”
Everyone stared at her and her soft words with amazement. Tears came to many girls’ eyes (and, of course, Tamaki’s eyes).
“That’s very sweet of you, Haruhi,” said (Y/N).
“Youngster, take some home for yourself.” Tamaki put another box into Haruhi’s hand. “Not your mother.”
“This will be for my mother,” said Haruhi, deadpan.
“You can have mine, Haruhi!” said a guest, and the other girls nodded.
The door of Music Room 3 opened, and (Y/N) looked over. A girl was peeking into the room, and (Y/N) smiled encouragingly.
            “Welcome in,” said (Y/N).
            “Come in, please,” said Kaoru.
            “Oh, pretty!” said Honey.
“Welcome, princess,” began Tamaki, holding out a hand. “To our Ouran Host Club—”
            Slap!
“Don’t touch me, you phony!” shouted the girl.
(Y/N)’s jaw dropped open in surprise.
“How did you get to be king of this club? The king does not spread his love around like cheap margarine!” She glared and pointed at Tamaki accusatorily. “A girl’s heart responds to the enigmatic smile, the indecipherable glance! You’re just a mushy oaf! An air-headed pretty boy! A second-rate Romeo! In short—a lousy lover!”
Tamaki’s let out an inaudible, strangled scream as his ego was torn to shreds. He deflated and slowly fell to the floor.
“That’s a new move,” said Kaoru.
            “Personal slow-mo,” said Hikaru.
            “Oh, dear,” remarked (Y/N), watching.
“Hm. She may be correct,” said Kyoya.
“Kyoya!” gasped the girl. She ran forward and threw her arms around him. Kyoya’s eyes widened slightly, and the other hosts watched in shock. “How I’ve ached to see you! My one, my only prince! I’ve missed you, fiancé!”
“…Kyoya has a fiancée?!” said Hikaru and Kaoru.
He has a fiancé? (Y/N) had no idea.
            Their stomach twisted strangely.
l
Dressed in their proper uniforms, the Host Club sat across from Kyoya’s “fiancée.”
“My name is Renge Hoshakuji,” she said, smiling. “I’m transferring into 1-A tomorrow.”
The hosts looked at Tamaki, who was still sitting sullenly in the corner.
“He’s all mad because ‘Mom’ kept a little secret from ‘Dad,’ ” said Hikaru and Kaoru.
“Not that I care, but how long do you intend to keep referring to us as ‘Mom and Dad?’ ” said Kyoya.
“You created the Host Club, so it makes sense,” said (Y/N), amused.
Renge wasn’t listening and continued to ramble. “Oh my, it was love at first sight. Watching him commune with plants in the yard, which get so little attention, then tending and comforting that injured kitten…” She sighed.
“Really?” Hikaru and Kaoru sweat-dropped. “That’s hard to picture.”
“Are you sure it’s Kyoya you saw?” said (Y/N), tilting their head. Kyoya wasn’t…evil (okay, it was debatable), but he certainly didn’t “commune with plants.”
“Wow, senpai, he’s standing right there,” said Haruhi.
“I mean him exactly!” declared Renge. “Kind to all and sundry, asking for nothing in return! A lonely soul who loves solitude! Priceless moments captured in a love simulation game—”
            “Aha,” said (Y/N).
“—Featuring Ichijo Miyabi from ‘Uki Doki Memorial!’ And you—” Renge pointed at Kyoya. “—look just like him.”
            Everyone froze.
“A fan girl?!” cried the host club (it was the first time they’d met one in person).
“Now it starts to make sense,” said Kyoya. “She’s fitting me to a game character and figures that makes her my fiancée.”
“Then you’re not…really her fiancé?” said Tamaki.
“Not to my knowledge,” said Kyoya. “And I’m fairly certain I’d know.”
(Y/N) nodded, and the slight knot in their stomach undid itself. Kyoya didn’t have a fiancée.
“Then just say that, you fool,” said the twins.
“I checked, and it seems Kyoya manages this club,” said Renge excitedly. “Is that true?”
“That’s right, he’s in charge,” chirped Honey.
“Omigod, that’s perfect!” said Renge. “I’ve dreamed of being a shop supervisor.”
(Y/N) and Haruhi exchanged a look of amusement on (Y/N)’s part and irritation on Haruhi’s part that said “rich people.”
“So what?” said Kaoru. “We’re a host club.”
            “Not a bakery,” finished Hikaru.
“I’ve decided!” said Renge. “As well as training to be a good wife, I will serve as manager of this Host Club.” She was in her own world, not listening to anyone but her own heart.
            “Um, Kyoya?” coughed Tamaki.
“She’s the daughter of one of my family’s key clients,” said Kyoya. “Please treat her with respect. Or else.”
“Put that way…” The hosts all turned to Haruhi, who blanched. “Haruhi!”
They made a run for it while Haruhi shouted indignantly.
“This one’s all yours! Daddy cannot help you now!” said Tamaki.
“You’re on your own!” cried the twins.
Mori picked up Honey and ran.
            “Sorry, Haruhi!” said (Y/N).
            “Wait…” Haruhi trailed off.
“Failure will increase your current debt considerably,” said Kyoya. He didn’t particularly want to deal with Renge, either.
            Poor Haruhi.
l
“Haruhi’s so cute in an apron,” said (Y/N), smiling.
“I could watch all day,” sighed Tamaki happily from where he peeked into the kitchens of Ouran as Haruhi taught Renge to make sweets.
“They’re making snacks for Kyo!” said Honey, smiling. “I want some…”
“I’m sure Haruhi will give you some,” said (Y/N).
“Renge intends to manage us?” said Kaoru, watching Haruhi have to direct Renge in everything.
            “Poor Haruhi,” said Hikaru.
“Fools! Don’t you see what’s happening?” said Tamaki excitedly. “A room filled with the scent of baking snacks made by two, uh, best girl buddies! It’s the latest phase of our big project to get Haruhi to awaken her femininity! In such a congenial and uniquely feminine atmosphere, Haruhi will realize—”
“Zip it, you faker,” said Renge coldly at the door.
“Tamaki, femininity and masculinity are silly binaries,” said (Y/N), smiling and lacing their fingers. “Don’t force anyone into it.” Tamaki was just being silly since he was obviously a little bit crushing on Haruhi, but (Y/N) liked seeing him get a little nervous anyways.
“Kyoya, Haruhi taught me how to make a commoner’s cookie,” said Renge, pleased with herself. “I must confess I’ve never baked before, so I was a little nervous.”
“I see,” said Kyoya politely. “They have a rather deep color.” (They were black and burnt).
“Yes, they’re a tad overdone,” said Renge. “But I know that you will say, ‘If you made it, it is a feast fit for a king!”
Hikaru hummed doubtfully as he crunched into a burnt cookie.
“What is this—a rock?” said Kaoru, munching on another one.
“Not very yummy…” said Honey sadly.
Renge growled angrily at all of them, and Honey fled to Mori.
Hikaru and Kaoru exchanged mischievous looks before going to Haruhi’s side as she tasted her cookies. Kaoru leaned down and bit off the other end of the cookie.
            “Tasty,” he said.
“Oh, my.” Hikaru leaned in and kissed Haruhi’s cheek to get a bit of frosting. “Let me help.”
Haruhi deadpanned, unimpressed, while Tamaki short-circuited and began to yell at them incomprehensibly.
“I can wipe it off myself,” said Haruhi, monotone as ever.
“Well, her male buddies are piling up fast,” said Kyoya as he watched Tamaki’s fire return.
“Tamaki is never satisfied,” said (Y/N), chuckling.
“Hey, hey, bad! Very bad reaction!” said Tamaki, grabbing Haruhi’s face. “You should chastise them for their impertinence!”
“Tepid.” Everyone looked over at Renge. “All of these character are tepid—except Kyoya.” She put her hands on her hips. “There’s no depth, no shading, no angst. Women love to swoon over tragic, handsome men. Without that, men are just silly and stupid and boring. And that will not do for Kyoya’s shop! This calls for major character revision.”
She does realize we’re real people…right?
“Staring with you!” Renge pointed at Honey, who had tears of fear in his eyes. “Being cute inside and out is too one-dimensional. From now on, you’re cute outside, but inside…you’re a ravening monster!”
Honey gave a cry of fear.
“Mori, you will hover over Honey, consumed by concern for him. Your every rare utterance will be profound!”
            So not much changes there.
“The twins will agonize over how their similarity constrains your individuality! Especially in…yes, the basketball club!” Renge threw a basketball at the twins (Where she got that, no one would ever know).
“Haruhi, hm, well, poor in wealth and family, yet a student at this school, that’ll do!” said Renge. Haruhi sighed.
            “But you, (Y/N), hm…we can’t copy Haruhi’s backstory—”
“Technically, I came first,” said (Y/N), smiling.
“—so, you will be the insecure scholarship student who uses flirting to cope with their loneliness!” said Renge.
(Y/N) deadpanned, and Haruhi patted them on the shoulder. “I’m sorry, senpai,” she said. (Y/N) was very much the opposite of that idea.
“And Tamaki!” Renge pointed at him. “Praised and idolized everywhere because of his appearance, he doesn’t know who he really is! ‘The Lonely King!’ ”
“The Lonely King…” Tamaki looked very flattered and poetic all of a sudden. “It fits me perfectly.”
“Kyoya is fine. No changes necessary,” said Renge dreamily.
            “I’m honored,” said Kyoya.
The rest of the Host Club was unsurprised and unimpressed with her reading of him.
“Kyoya,” said the twins. “Do something.”
“Such as? Haruhi is in charge of her,” said Kyoya. “And look—” He gestured at Tamaki.
“Renge! How’s this for a vision of abject loneliness?” said Tamaki, draping himself across a bench dramatically.
“Well posed, Tamaki!” said Renge. “It would look even better in the rain!”
“Our president’s quite into it,” said Kyoya.
“Oh, Tamaki,” sighed (Y/N). They crossed their arms and looked at Kyoya. “Are you sure about this?”
Kyoya smirked slightly. “Let’s just see how it goes, shall we? Could be interesting.”

other thoughts about Ouran genderswap au where they're doing a zuka club
-the theatre performances all suck. varying effort is made by any of the participants
-it is technically a theatre troupe but most people are just regular attendees because they get to hang with their preferred host afterwards because Tamaki insists on hour long meet and greets. For a school theatre troupe.
-Kyoya is so much more deranged about her future because her sister is literally getting married off when she meets Tamaki for the first time and here's Tamaki like "oh what do you mean you won't inherit? I'm an only child so even though I'm a girl I'll get everything. Though actually maybe I won't even go to college, I always thought I'd make it as a model lalalala" and Kyoya is insane about it
-Hikaru and Kaoru are actually set to inherit their matrilineal family line and therefore are mommy's specialist little princesses and probably do not get almost killed by their nanny as children because they're not left to raise themselves as much. They're still Like That though because still no one can tell them apart and they're weird and off-putting
-Renge's fujo fantasies are all fantasies about thinly veiled ecchi bait harem fan service. It's extremely unpalatable. Parodies of this frequently happen.
-is it funnier for Tamaki to be entirely unaware she's created a bisexual harem or is it funnier for her to be like I am SO beautiful that even girls love me... sigh I wish I wasn't straight so I could share my beauty with more people <- deluded
-in ep five during the fake fight, Hikaru cuts her hair off and then Kaoru makes snide comments about her dumbass bob. Then obviously Kaoru has to cut her hair off afterwards too.
-ironically college Kaoru has the exact same haircut as canon college Kaoru in that she cuts it off again. That haircut is a universal constant on both sides of the gay community I'm afraid.
-Kyoya and the twins are using the zuka club to create blackmail fodder on half the student body. Kyoya is using it for future business endeavours, to always have something up her sleeve to get ahead. Hikaru and Kaoru are just contributing to it by tricking their regulars into various compromising situations for entertainment
-when the host club tries to steal Haruhi, their response is to host a performance of a shonen sports anime to show that girls can be guys too. Mori is actually really good at baseball and takes it super seriously. Hikaru and Kaoru spend the entire time speaking in sports analogies that get increasingly innunedo-ified
-Haruhi has to be exactly the same. The majority of his dialogue doesn't even change. None of his outfits even change. Literally same font.

Honey Senpai’s Cavity
This is a Mitsukuni x reader. This one shot takes place during the episode where he had his cavity.
Warnings: None
Enjoyyy~~~~
——————————————————————————
Tumblr media
Y/n smiles as she walks through the halls of Ouran Highschool, her (long/short) hair seemingly glowing as she walks the halls. She stops in front of a room where a sign above the door read “Music Room 3”.
She smiles knowing that this is the room she had been instructed to go ti by her mom. She opens the door gently and instead of the usual rose petals she was hit with a cry of pain as she steps in.
“Are you okay Honey~senpai?” Haruhi asks as she looks over at Y/n upon her arrival.
“No! I took a bite of cake and my tooth started hurting!” He cries as he holds his cheek in pain.
“Hm it appears Honey~senpai has a cavity.” Tamaki says as he leans down and inspects Honey~senpai’s tooth.
Mori leans down and looks at him as he feels his heart tense up when he remembers he didn’t remind Honey~senpai to brush his teeth.
“Um hi?” Y/n says awkwardly as she walks into the room and tries not to interrupt their conversation.
“Y/niieeee!” Honey~senpai cries as he runs towards her and hugs her tightly.
“Y/nnnn! My tooth hurts!” He cries as he clings to her.
“Yes Honey it’s called a cavity.” Y/n smiles as she hugs him back and pets his head slowly.
“What the what?! Who is that gorgeous girl and why is she coddling with Honey~senpai?!” Hikaru asks shocked as he looks at his twin.
“Maybe their close friends?” Haruhi suggests as she looks at them curiously.
“Ooo or maybe their enemies but only in privacy they can be intimate?!” Tamaki asks but everyone just ignores him and a pretend arrow strikes his left shoulder.
“Maybe their online friends?” Kaoru suggests as he holds his hand up to his chin in a thinking position.
“Ooo! Or maybe they’re best friends who secretly love each other and want to privately confess!” Tamaki says as a dramatic tear rolls down his eye but once again he was ignored which caused another arrow to strike him in his right shoulder.
“Maybe their families are partners?” Haruhi asks as she thinks.
“Maybe their lovers who can’t be together because of their families!” Tamaki shouts and that’s everyone’s last straw so they all yell.
“SHUT UP TAMAKI!” Even Honey~senpai yells but he cries and clutches his tooth as Y/n gently sits him down on the couch and hands him Usa~Chan.
A final arrow comes out and shoots Tamaki in the heart as he cries and heads to his mushroom growing corner.
“Honey you shouldn’t yell with your cavity.” Y/n says as she sits beside him on the couch when she feels a rattle shake her and the couch.
“Hmmm… seems like there is a secret going on in the Host Club.” Renge grins as she pops out of her hole in the ground sitting to her table with her tea cup full of commoners coffee.
“You’re still here?!” Hikaru asks as he looks at her scared.
“Yes you idiot. I’d never leave my dear Haruhi here with you hooligans.” She says rolling her eyes before her eyes meet Y/n’s.
“Oh my god! Honey~senpai has a lover?!” She shouts which finally pisses Kyoya off.
“Yes! I tried to hold my pateinede until they finished but I can’t take it. That is Y/n. She is Honey~senpai’s girlfriend.” Kyoya explains once he reaches his wits end.
The host clubs faces stay the same but after a few seconds their eyes all widen as they look back and forth from Kyoya to Honey and back to Kyoya.
“Really? He’s got a girlfriend?!” Hikaru and Kaoru ask in sync as they look at Honey and Y/n.
“Yes. It’s true. I know that look that they give each other. It’s the look of true love.” Tamaki gasps in shock as he comes to the realization.
“Huh. And how do you feel about this Mori? Did you know?” Haruhi asks the silent boy.
He nods as he smiles gently as if saying he’s happy for them.
“Then I guess it’s settled. We all were wrong.” Hikaru sighs as he looks down defeated.
“Except for Tamaki~San.” Y/n says as she smiles at them
“WHATTTTTT?!” The host clubs members (minus Mori and Kyoya since they both already knew) scream so loud it rattled the school.
“Yes me and Honey’s parents are enemies and we’re in a secret relationship. Though I guess not so secret since you all know. And we were best friends until we confessed privately and only Mori knew. And in private is the only way we can be intimate so that’s why I was coming to look for him. I just told my mom that I was coming to visit Kyoya.” Y/n smiles as she giggles softly at their shocked faces.
“Huh. For once the boss said something smart.” Kaoru says as the host club members agree.
“Yes thank you- what do you all mean for once?!” Tamaki shouts as he looks at them from his mushroom corner.
“It’s just that- well- nevermind Tamaki.” They sigh and get back to talking about Honey~senpai and his girlfriend.
That was the topic the host club stayed on for the entire day. It was just so shocking to them.
Y/n and Honey cuddled for the remainder of the day and answered questions for the host club. Mainly Y/n since Honeys cavity kept hurting but he smiled happy to be able to be with Y/n.

Tamaki: You're cute when you're mad.
Haruhi: Then I'm about to get fucking adorable!
Kyoya: Thank you to my mother, who posted how much she loves her three children on Facebook... I'm the fourth.
Renge: Hey, don't insult my cooking, I used to be a professional caterer!
Hikaru: And you still would be, if you hadn't poisoned those nuns.
Hikaru: This scented candle smells like shit.
Honey: Those are my grandma's ashes.
Kyoya: They don't ID me for liquor or cigarettes anymore because they see the light has left my eyes.
Hikaru: Sluts never get turned down.
Kaoru: Let's test that theory: Hey, Kyoya! Ever been turned down?
Kyoya: Nope.
Kaoru: Guess you're right, Hikaru.
Hikaru: Let's go car shopping. Our parents promised me a bar if I got all B's, and I got all C's.
Haruhi: I think I'll just stay in my room tonight, dad. Goodnight.
Ranka: Okay, goodnight sweetie.
Tamaki from the closet: Goodnight Ranka!
Haruhi: I feel so uncomfortable around tall people. What if they lick my head?
Kasanoda: I'm on probation from the gardening club because every time someone asked what was eating their plants I kept telling them it was me.
Tamaki: Sorry I'm late, I got trapped inside my duvet cover.
Kuze: One time I sprayed hand sanitizer into another kid's eyes in second grade and now he wears glasses.
Yoshio: Despite my screw ups, I was able to raise four fully functional children.
Kyoya: You have four kids we don't know about?
Ranka: I was wondering if we could have a little chat.
Tamaki: You want me to go home?
Ranka: No, no, it's the opposite of that.
Tamaki: ... I want you to go home?
Haruhi: My neighbourhood is totally safe.
Hikaru: I'm pretty sure our car had wheels when we parked here earlier.
Haruhi: I have edge.
Mori: You really don't. You are literally the most wide eyed person I've ever seen. You have the face of a cartoon lamb.
Haruhi: Not eating lunch today?
Kyoya: No, I got my lunch money taken.
Haruhi: There are bullies at this school?
Kyoya: Yes but Akito took mine, the dick.

Thoughts on Kyoya's development in the manga? It's nice to see him have more expressions and being unhinged towards the later chapters.
Manga kyoya is the food i was raised on
Where i really REALLY think the manga shines in the characterization of Kyoya is that it drives home that Kyoya is an important, complex, sympathetic character who is well liked by his peers for exactly who he is and has always been. There is not some secretly kind and sweet Kyoya hiding under the ambition and temper, in fact what is under there is even MORE ambition and at times a rage he physically cannot contain. And he is loved for it.
And I think this is a great creative choice with his character and one we know from the very beginning is intentional because of Renge. Her introduction serves to show who these characters aren’t going to be. In most stories, a character like Kyoya can only be liked by other characters (and the audience) if he is secretly sweet in some ways. Kyoya shatters this fantasy with a rock. There is no hidden sweetness.
This is not to say he doesn’t care, just that there is no gentleness to his care. As you say Kyoya becomes much more expressive and unhinged in some chapters of the manga because his emotions are finally so big he cannot keep them restrained at all- and it is very consistent that this is almost exclusively caused by or about Tamaki (there is only one instance I can think of where he gets particularly genuine and expressive and it’s entirely for himself, from the final chapter). But there is also a kind of care that Kyoya is consistently expressing through his work, because he is constantly putting in an extraordinary amount of work in service of the club and its members. And it takes him a while, almost to the very end of the series, to admit that he is doing this not because it will benefit his future career or the Ootori family, but because the club has become precious to him and he will do anything for it and its members.
And not only does Kyoya realize this, but even more progress for our beloved boy, he says so explicitly to Kaoru. (and Honey seems to psychically get the message too???) This I think is also one of the great strong suits of the manga over the anime: the anime really focuses in on just the relationships of characters to Haruhi or to Tamaki because of how much of the series had come out and because of needing to streamline things. The manga is much, much more about the relationships between all members of the club. Tamaki brought the pairs together, but these boys have spent two years getting to know and become friends with each other and they ALL see Kyoya for who he is and love him for it. They don’t match him and understand him as fundamentally as Tamaki does (the boys come in pairs for a reason), but they do get him better than he thinks they do and there are multiple scenes of characters other than Haruhi stunning him with how well they see through his shell.
The relationships to Honey and Kaoru are given the most attention and are the most interesting to me, but I will just discuss Kaoru for now because this is already long enough. Kaoru and Kyoya become each other’s default partner when their normal companion isn’t an option and they are really good at it. Kyoya recognizes capability and drive in Kaoru, which Kaoru always rises up to meet. And Kaoru is very vocal about complimenting Kyoya in such a way that clearly points out he sees Kyoya’s actual motives, which embarrasses Kyoya in exactly the same way that Tamaki and Haruhi are good at doing when they see right through him too. Kaoru respects Kyoya and also understands that everything he is doing is from an enormous amount of care for his friends. And unlike the way most people see the twins, Kyoya sees Kaoru as reliable and just as dedicated to their club/family as he is.

what’s your thoughts on ouran? you mentioned you had a love / hate relationship with it and i think that would be interesting to hear
Oh god post that usually would be reserved for my sideblog incoming. Heads up this one might get uncomfortable, heed the tags. LONG POST.
TL;DR: it's a fun show that's neck deep in the misogyny sauce
I had the true ouran experience of watching it when I was 12 and thinking it was really funny but ultimately finished the show feeling mildly disappointed as well as being Very put off by one specific episode.
As a 12 year old I didn't really have the words to explain why but over the years I thought back to ouran again and again and the more I thought about it the more. Angry isn't really the right emotion I guess. Eyebrow raised emoji-y is more accurate.
Now that I am a bit older and wiser and have read more shoujo, I think the majority of the annoyance and confusion I felt towards ouran, especially nearing the end of the show, came from the fact that it pretty much bait-and-switches its own stance on gender roles, classism and judging by appearance. Please note that I have not rewatched ouran in many years so take all this with a grain of salt and forgive me for anything I'm straight up misremembering.
Haruhi, to me, embodies a very quintessential shoujo protagonist archetype. She's not necessarily radicalized against gender roles, but doesn't place the same importance in gendered performance as her peers. She's also viciously ambitious and doesn't downplay her own intelligence, qualities that her female peers around her have been conditioned to avoid in their cartoonishly extreme upper class upbringings.
However, the other girls' education being a direct result of their education is never really examined. All the other girls at ouran are presented as vapid and "boy-crazy" over the host club. Renge, the only major female character aside from Haruhi herself, is delegated to being comedic relief (and of course, the humour surrounding her almost always has to do with her obsession with Kyoya) with some not so subtle implications that Haruhi is above her girlish antics because Haruhi is... Better, to put it bluntly, in every way including her ability to appeal to men, which can be seen through Kyoya's neutral to distasteful opinion of Renge vs his somewhat unsubtle care and attraction towards Haruhi.
This very unflattering depiction of women other than Haruhi extends to the very queer-coded* Lobelia academy girls, who the host club spends an episode "rescuing" Haruhi from and, once again despite their group leader's more masculine look, reacts in shock and horror at their feminine interests. Eugh, makeup! Disgusting!
*pressing the "nuance" button on this one because we can't expect to apply our understanding of queer signalling on a Japanese highschooler, but the Lobelia girls are. Fairly blatant enough I feel that I almost don't even want to call it coding.
The girls in the show who aren't Haruhi are either boy-crazy and therefore stupid, side characters whose episodes are often tied to getting with a male love interest (who is always depicted as "plain" compared to the desirable men of the host club), rivals in love against Haruhi (like Eclair) or silly evil lesbians.
Speaking of the silly evil lesbians, I do think it's interesting how many times the show feels the need to restate Haruhi's heterosexuality through her endless amounts of blatant disinterest in her fangirls. I briefly wrote once on how patriarchal standards have an amount of gender-nonconformity that can be accepted with women, but violently withdraws that acceptance when it can be even slightly confused with signalling queerness. Every second boomer dad wants a tomboy daughter, yet none of them seem to want trans sons. Idk, food for thought.
It's also fascinating to me that Utena is so much older than Ouran, yet almost feels like a direct response to Ouran's pitfalls at times e.g. the "not like other girls" logic of Ouran's world that pits women against eachother. The only women deserving of sympathy are those who don't act as a "threat" to Haruhi's desireability, everyone else is stupid and beneath her or an evil bitch.
The one woman who is always shown as intelligent and worthy of respect outside of Haruhi herself is Haruhi's deceased mother. Interesting that she had to be dead and more of a concept and motivator for Haruhi instead of.. a character.
If the show was just a marina and the diamonds girls simulator that would be one thing but what I find even more insidious is that not only does it not respect its female cast, Haruhi herself is almost. Instructed? In the show to uphold patriarchal rhetoric, when she entered as a neutral force. With the fact that she acts as the audience stand-in, I find this just the smallest bit troubling.
ESPECIALLY. when talking about the specific episode that really gave me the "I don't like this alot but I can't describe why" feelings when I was 12. Everything else in the show I can look past but this episode genuinely pissed me the fuck off when I was 12 and pisses me off even more now.
I'm talking of course about the "better remember your place in society or men will rape you!!"
In episode 8, the host club visits the beach but instead of the fun beach episode I thought was coming up, 12 year old me was hit was Haruhi being scolded by Tamaki for trying to defend a group of girls from ruffians, simply because she is a girl. Haruhi obviously gets mad.
This in of itself is fine, Tamaki's been shown to be an idiot and very deep in the misogyny/classism sauce, and the way this show mocks that is why I really like him.
But Tamaki is supposed to be IN THE RIGHT this episode, as later Kyoya pretends that he's going to rape Haruhi to teach her a lesson about why women shouldn't confront men I guess. Which, of course, implies quite a lot of very strange things in a show made for young girls, including that if you just abide by gender expectations that are Good and Keep You Safe you... won't be raped? Haruhi even thanks Kyoya for PRETENDING HE WAS GOING TO RAPE HER ?
It's this. Very strange and hypocritical moment for this show and really, really soured Kyoya's character for me -- which is a shame cus I do think he's one of the most interesting club members. I'll never not fume about this episode man I literally got into fights with friends over this episode being garbage as a kid and it was one of the smartest opinions I had at that age.
It's also gross to me that this whole thing revolved around, in the first place, Haruhi trying to defend other girls. In a show that keeps isolating Haruhi from them. So to recap 1. DO NOT seek out relationships with other women, they are vapid and won't understand you, certainly not more than the men in your life and 2. If you defend other women (from men), you're being stupid. Get a man to handle it instead, because it's men's duty to defend women, not yours. and if you violate this natural order you deserve to get raped. Hashtag some gender roles are good, actually.
I also have more thoughts on the way it's presented as if being raped as a woman is the worst thing imagineable but Renge's stalker tendencies towards Kyoya are played up for laughs. Shrugs.
The episode even ends with Haruhi saying she wasn't afraid because she knew Kyoya wasn't going to do it, but then ending up in a curled up helpless ball anyway because of. some thunder. really awesome. While I don't have any problem with exploring Haruhi's vulnerability, we never see any of the boys in such a state, reinforcing that this isn't about dropping the facade of unemotional masculinity but Haruhi being... a girl. Barf.
Even completely disregarding that episode, the messaging is. Strange to say the least. I do think this one might be the thing that gets me shot because Tamaki Does come around to appreciating Haruhi as a person and not simply a "woman", but the fact remains that she still acts as a "love interest" from beginning to end. And the whole dynamic of. Haruhi going from completely disinterested to fond of Tamaki over time, and Tamaki learning to abandon his playboy ways and see Haruhi as a person is totally fine and okay. BUT it is a little bit. Oh so NOW you want to talk about seeing women as people.
I feel that I've been. very focused on the hate part of the love hate and I'll be real nowadays that is very much the dominant half. I still like the show just for nostalgia value, the humour, as well as the host club members themselves. Morii and Honey specifically have a really awesome dynamic and I wish we got to see Honey go berserker more but it is what it is. Kyoya, rapey moment aside, is also really fun and maybe one of those characters that made me realise what kind of tropes I like. I will not stand a word of Hikaru and Kaoru slander, those boys are awesome and their incestuous club personas are a great parody of how performative the club really is, and through that how performative society as a whole is when dealing with attraction as a concept. And I actually really like the side characters too, the emo catboy and Renge in particular.
But I'd be lying if I said it wasn't perhaps one of the most anti-feminist bait and switches I'd ever seen in my life.
Haruhi's not even gender-nonconforming!! She's just a normie with a normal amount of care put into gendered presentation but because she's in the psychopath rich people school she SEEMS gender-nonconforming!! Which is fine as I've said before I think a lot of shoujo protagonists are like Haruhi in that their gender is more "I just work here" at best and something used to oppress them at worst, but Haruhi goes out of her way to present more feminine the moment she leaves the school gates.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Big words for this show to come out swinging saying gender roles and expectations attached to them are dumb when its so terrified of actually tackling them. I don't require everything I watch to be queer queer gay gay homosexual transgender beam attack but like?? Why have Haruhi say she dgaf and then have her present feminine anyway? Especially when it's been highlighted to us that her family is dirt poor, yet she still has the money for hair extensions? You're telling me she decided to cut ALL OF HER HAIR OFF FOR A TINY PIECE OF GUM. for no reason at all when she could've easily just cut it into a bob??
FTR I do still like Haruhi which is what makes this all the more frustrating, especially since she's one of the few female anime characters who we're told is supposed to be masc-presenting and actually could pass as that. Mf questioned the system of gender and then proceeded to do fuckall with it. Gets forced into crossdressing but underlines it with "but im not a lesbian" the whole way through. What cowardice. What theory and no practice. What bark but no bite. What a non-theme. Haruhi is the opposite of punk. Centrist ass take of an anime.
Ahem. Biases aside. I just feel like it fails as a romance, fails saying anything substantial about gender or class and ultimately ends up being meaningless fluff at best and pro-rapist and anti-woman at worst.

Can I please have some dark world administrative lore. Read your "Jaden Yuki has to take care of a pack of middle schoolers" and now im obsessed. Very much looking forward to the fic you mentioned where Yuri becomes Jaden's intern/apprentice because I would love to see their relationship development/dynamic and also. I need more administrative lore. I would absolutely read your entire 15 slide powerpoint
I have such a regular amount of Dark World lore. It is a very sane amount of worldbuilding I did. The next fic in the series definitely isn't going to be more underworld office comedy schennanigans with absurd amounts of exposition and complex workplace drama.
(One of these is a lie.)
For the dark world administrative lore, I decided to use file no. 4 of the Master Guide 2 card storylines as a jumping off point, and then the lore just ballooned from there. The powerpoint exists for my own referencing purposes, because even if most of the dark world generals don't appear (yet >:), it is important it exists to me.
Let's start with our head of state and his primary advisors!
Tumblr media
Third King of the Dark World, babey!!! You know him, you love him, it's the Yuki!
Not too much to say about our Supreme Boi that isn't gonna be covered in future fics. The most relevant information, going into the as-of-yet-untitled next gc au fic, is thinking about what the hot mess that is dark world politics from an outside perspective. Like, imagine you're one of the other interdimensional courts that exist in the wider yugioh canon and just
Tumblr media
Yuri doesn't have a slide in my powerpoint :(
I can say that in the gc au after he settles into the dark world and starts being involved in running the kingdom, Jaden goes in and officially names him an official of the dark world. At first, Yuri demanded he also be called "Supreme King", because he's a little shit like that. They compromise on "Supreme Prince".
None of the other officials call him that. They just call him "The Princeling"
Tumblr media
Beiige, my beloved long suffering paper pusher <3
Jaden does, in fact, end up giving him a scarf at some point.

Under our King, Prince, and Vanguard, we have the newly promoted heads of Millitary and Wellfare. There is technically a third branch of of the government, Security, but rather than have a single representative, the duties of security are actually divided into Internal and External. Or, more specifically, The Wild Hunt and Renge And His Weird Daughter.
More on them later.
For now, say hi to the rest of the Dark World's millitary division!
Tumblr media
Fun fact! At first one might assume that the dark world monsters don't have genders! Well, I assumed that at first, at least. But Snoww is considered notable for being the "only" female Dark Lord, which implies they have at least some kind of gender system. And for some reason, I find it much stranger to have a host of duel spirits with like twelve guys and one woman, than everyone just using to same pronouns. So for my own comfort and amusement, I've switched up some of the Dark Lords genders. So if she ever comes up in fic, Lucent is a woman. Other than that, she's basically the textbook brooding samurai. Jaden actually offered her the position of millitary head first, but she turned it down, both thinking herself undeserving of the title, and because she argued her being not an on-the-ground operative is exactly how she did not know how bad Bronn's rule had become. He reluctantly agreed, and she pointed him towards Zure.
What happened to the previous heads of Military? Well, as I alluded to in my fic, they're a bit hard to track down at the moment.
Tumblr media
And in special ops, we got Cobal!
Tumblr media
Not actually ever printed, never even seen in show. Cobal wasn't even a Dark Lord under the previous monarchy. He's like the dark world equivalent of a construction worker who got promoted to the head of the CIA. Why the rapid career change? Well one, he was in the resistance with Axel, and Jaden trusts anyone who tried to actively overthrow him. Also, the previous head of the CIA defected and set about overthrowing the government.
Tumblr media
And on the other side, under Gren's oversight, we have our Silly Old Men.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The true victors of diplomacy. Because they were not soldiers, and smart enough to understand how veeeeery precarious that made their standing once Bronn started to go all mad king-y, used their massive brains and promptly noped right out of the situation. Parl already stayed in his cave like 90% of the time, so he pulled the old Just Stop Showing Up To The Office strategy and wrote a letter to his friend suggesting he do that same. Someone who was NOT passive about the whole Supreme King situation, however, was Ceruli's apprentice, Snoww.
Tumblr media
While they have since reconciled, Snoww was originally an ardent opponent to Jaden's (first) rule, as well as Bronn. There isn't a more skilled death diviner in the dark world, nor any other dimension, so Supreme King Jaden went to her first thing upon Bronn's defeat to seek help recovering Jesse's soul. She was unable to find it (him being still alive) and even worse, advised Jaden that obsessing over a ghost was often the last thing a spirit wanted. Once he started pursuing Super Poly, she turned her work to guiding as many of the lost souls as she could to a peaceful rest, and delaying the ritual as long as possible.
She continued like this even after she was found out, and formally defected to join the rebellion.
Tumblr media
RIP Latinum. He's currently rotting in one of the many Dark World prison cells.
And lastly, we've got the security branch, both internal and external.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There are now two gatekeepers in the Dark World, which is a 200% increase to what it was previously!!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Broww's wild hunt is roughly based on the real life folkloric trend; the ever-moving host of unquiet dead that roams across the land. I like to think it has that same spooky connotation, even among dark world residents. Broww's just scary. Add to it that he basically disappeared from the government to continue to act as an independent force, the wild hunt has a bit of a mysterious reputation. It's basically the most sovereign branch of the dark world government, if not for...
Tumblr media
Are you going to be the one to tell the dragonlord what they can and can't do??? Grapha and Jaden work on a mutual respect type of relationship, as Jaden is one of the most powerful beings in all dimensions and still a little cautious about working with dragon spirits. Inversely, Grapha is willing to handle territorial and testy dragons all day, but can acknowledge when their boss is pretty chill for an eldritch horror.
If you want a easier to follow summary, here's a diagram of the Dark World's current chain of command:
Tumblr media
AND! For an added bit of trivia: Completely by accident, I somwhow managed to namedrop every GX era original Dark World monster in Jaden Yuki Has To Take Care Of A Pack Of Wild Middleschoolers. I just love talking about my headcanon lore so much. Can you spot them all?
