Some styles prosper more in Germany thanks to the fact their language makes them sound much more intriguing than usual. For instance, Germans have many industrial rock outfits, though they add more elements of rock to their playing. I mean, they're closer to metal than many in the style I mentioned, including Oomph. They are one of the biggest names in the brand, called Neue Deutsche Härte, but they are an enigma to me. Sure, you can put them in the same bracket as their peers, though I always felt they belonged into a different scene. Maybe the fact they also tried to sing in English – many Härte musicians avoided that – caused me to see them differently. They are closer to alternative rock of Germany than whatever Härte is.

A Düsseldorf, Germany-based energy company called Uniper announced last week that it sent methane made from renewable hydrogen into the local natural gas pipeline.
The methanation plant in Falkenhagen that made the synthetic methane opened in May 2018 (PDF), and the plant's operators began testing the process to combine renewable hydrogen with carbon dioxide from a nearby bioethanol plant.
The synthetic methane is sent into the local natural gas pipeline, where it's used along with traditional natural gas. "Today, the plant produces up to 1,400 cubic meters of synthetic methane (SNG) per day, which corresponds to approximately 14,500 kWh [kilowatt hours] of energy," a Uniper press release noted.

Soon to be Lost - The Rohe & Brothers Building, 527-531 West 36th Street
photograph by Renee Stanley
In 1872 the massive Manhattan Market opened on New York's West Side.  Engulfing the block between Eleventh and Twelfth Avenues, from 34th and 35th Streets, it was the largest market building in the world--offering fresh meats (a butchery was on site), fish and produce.  It was a welcomed neighbor for Rohe & Brother, which had erected its sprawling provision packing house and lard refinery at No. 533 through 541 West 36th Street two years earlier.  Simultaneously an architecturally matching warehouse and stables building had been erected on West 35th Street.
Although a block apart, the main plant (center) and the warehouse (left) were designed to match. from the collection of the Library of Congress
In 1897 The National Provisioner noted that the packing and refinery property "has been added to a number of times...The building is a substantial one of brick, and extends from 533-543 West Thirty-sixth street, to 534-540 West Thirty-seventh street.  The abattoir [butchery] is located at the foot of Fortieth Street, North River, and occupies four lots."  Charles Rohe had died in 1888 and his son, Charles, Jr., became a member of the firm.  Charles Sr.'s other son, Julius, by now supervised the packing house and the manufacturing of goods.  Florian's sons, Albert and Oswald Rohe, worked in the store and main office.
Florian Rohe as he appeared in 1897.  The National Provisioner, January 30, 1897 (copyright expired)
The National Provisioner noted that "the secret of the success of Rohe & Bro. is the splendid business ability which characterizes its movements and the bond of fraternity which exists between employees and employers."  The Rohes recognized the importance of good employee relations and a contented staff.   A separate article in the journal reported on the 11th annual employee ball.  Many, if not most, of the factory workers were German immigrants and the event was a brilliant change to their day-to-day lives.  "The entire office staff of the house of Rohe & Bro., from the office boy to their traveler and salesman, was present, while the large force of employees, numbering many hundreds, together with their wives and sweethearts, were delighted participants in the night's proceedings, all actuated by a loyal regard for the interests of the firm." On January 19, 1898, The Butchers' Advocate and Market Journal reported that year's ball, held in the Lexington Avenue Opera House.  "When the orchestra, led by Professor Rode, started the grand march, about 300 couples were on the floor, and these quickly fell in behind Mr. Albert Rohe and wife, who led the army of gay marchers through a series of evolutions more beautiful than any ever seen before in this city." Two months later, on March 5, the Real Estate Record & Builders' Guide reported that George D. Bogert had sold the "old buildings" at Nos. 527 through 531 West 36th Street to Rohe & Brother for $24,750; just under $860,000 today.  The property abutted the main lard refinery and packing plant and The New York Times noted "the buyer will erect a factory on the site." That would not happen, however, until 1902.  On March 29 that year The National Provisioner reported "Rohe & Brother now have their specifications in for their new packing house at 527-531 West 36th Street."  The firm had hired the architectural firm of Werner & Windolph to design the structure, which was projected to cost about $1.8 million in today's money. Somewhat surprising was the architectural style of the new two-story addition.  It may have been that Charles Rohe (his uncle, Florian, was deceased by now) directed Werner & Windolph to match the old factory; or perhaps the architects themselves chose to meld the two.  Either way, the design, out of style for years, seamlessly carried on the design of the 1870 Rohe & Brother building.  Only the delicate corbel table that ran below the cornice broke ranks with the original structure. Upon the building's completion the Rohes incorporated "the packinghouse firm of Rohe & Brothers," as reported in Industrial Refrigeration in April 1903.  The article mentioned "The company will do a general meat packing business."  It was an interesting and unusual move.  By 1908 there were three corporation names.  Charles was listed as head of Rohe & Brother;  Albert as head of Rohe Bros.; and William of Rohe & Bro.  All three, legally separate firms, were listed as "large refiners and provisions." The sons of the firm's founders never abandoned its interest in employee contentedness.  On June 29, 1904 The Butchers' Advocate and Market Journal reported on the employee summer outing at Bachmann's Pavilion on Staten Island.  "How those Rohe & Brothers' employees did enjoy themselves!  They danced and bowled and ran races and absorbed the product of Mr. Bachmann with a strenuousness that would make a lazy man tired just to look at." The two-story building at Nos. 527-531 held the company's offices.  Working past nightfall could be risky, given the sketchy Hell's Kitchen location and that threat came to pass on the night of January 22, 1913.  The Elmira Star-Gazette reported "Five men dashed up to Rohe & Brothers' wholesale meats, provisions and oils plant at 527-531 West 36th street, between Tenth and Eleventh avenues, last night in a taxicab and at the point of revolvers held back two inside and two outside employees of the firm."  The Morning Call of Patterson, New Jersey entitled its article "Wild West Game in New York" and began "The west side of Manhattan, where automobile holdups and robberies are not by any means unknown, experienced last night its most spectacular Wild West holdup and robbery about 7:30 o'clock."
Charles Rohe, Jr. was the principal of the firm following Florian Rohe's death. Empire State Notables, 1914 (copyright expired)
While the employees were held at gunpoint, one of the robbers jumped over the wire cashier's cage and snatched up $700 in cash, a considerable $18,300 today.  The gang escape in the waiting taxicab and although the four employees rushed out in pursuit, they were unable to get the license plate number in the darkness.  The Elmira Star-Gazette said "None of the employees could give much of a description of the robbers, further than that all were 'tough looking,' and all wore caps." In 1914 Rohe & Brother was, according to Chicago's The Day Book, the "largest New York provision packer."  The firm was, for instance, the major United States exporter of lard to Venezuela.   In 1930 the Rohes sold off all the firm's property in the Hell's Kitchen neighborhood except for Nos. 527-531 West 36th Street.  The Sun explained on May 6 that year that the building was still used as Rohe & Brother's executive offices.  But that would not last long, either. Architect William H. Fuhrer renovated the building in 1936 for the bottling plant of milk dealer Hershey Farms, Inc.   It was run by Max Doner, who chose not to use union employees for its delivery drivers.  It was a daring decision at a time when unions used strong-arm tactics to force businesses to comply with their demands.
A 1940 tax photograph reveals the ground floor changes for Hersey Farms, including an architecturally disparate pedimented entrance.  The main Rohe & Brother plant has been demolished.  photo via NYC Department of Records & Information Services.
On March 19, 1942 nine labor leaders, involved with the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, Chauffeurs, Warehousemen & Helpers of America, Local 445, were indicted on extortion.   The New York State prosecutor charged that between December 1935 and November 1940 the defendants "feloniously, wrongfully, willfully and extorsively obtained the sum of $7,125.00" from Max Doner "by the wrongful use of force and fear induced by threats" to injure both him personally and the property of Hershey Farms, and to induce strikes. Hershey Farms remained here until 1959 when the building was once again renovated, this time for a storage warehouse.  In 1970 it was converted for use by Scheuman Lumber.   A later occupant was Steven & Francine's Complete Automotive Repair Inc. who shared the building with its owner, the Convention Center Hardware & Supplies, LLC.  By 2012 the once gritty district had been discovered by developers and the upscale Hudson Yards project, formerly unthinkable, was on the table.   The old Rohe & Brother  building sat within the four-acre Hudson Park and Boulevard project--Phase II of the larger Hudson Yards development.
The buildings at the right of this photo have all been demolished, stranding the Rohe & Brothers building as in a wasteland.  photo via Commercial Observer, November 2012.
Faced with eventual eminent domain Convention Center Hardware and Supplies placed it on the market in November 2012 for $10 million. Any architectural historian who might pass the vacant and boarded up building today would date its construction at around 1870; not knowing that its anachronistic design was based on its 32-year old next-door neighbor.  But they would have to be quick.  The unlikely survivor has a short life expectancy. many thanks to Renee Stanley for prompting this post

PBA faces longest season to give way to Team Pilipinas' World Cup bid
THE Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) is bracing for what could be the longest season in its rich, 45-year history.
The coming new season might stretch for over a year once adjustments in the league’s playing schedule are made to synchronize with the FIBA calendar, whose main event is the hosting of the 2019 World Cup in China from August 31 to September 15.
The Office of the Commissioner under Willie Marcial has already been taken to task by league Board Chairman Ricky Vargas of TnT Katropa to make the necessary adjustment in its schedule, especially with the World Cup qualifiers not being over until February of next year.
PBA season 45 kicks off on January 13 and Marcial isn’t discounting the 2019 Governors Cup ending perhaps by January of 2020 with the leeway the league is extending to the campaign of Team Pilipinas.
“The third conference next season may stretch to January 2020 as the league is again re-adjusting its schedule for the remaining windows of the FIBA World Cup qualifiers, and to the World Cup proper should we make it there,” said Marcial after attending his first annual board meeting and planning session as commissioner Saturday at the Venetian Hotel in Las Vegas.
“That’s the commitment the PBA is throwing to the SBP and the national team.”
Team Pilipinas remains very much in the running for one of seven World Cup berths reserved for Asia.
The entire board gave its full support to Marcial and Vargas during the first of its scheduled three-day session.
Attending the meeting are governors Dickie Bachmann (Alaska), Alfrancis Chua (Barangay Ginebra), Robert Non (San Miguel), Rod Franco (NLEX), Eric Arejola (NorthPort), Siliman Sy (Blackwater), Atty. Raymond Zorilla (Phoenix), Rene Pardo (Magnolia Pambansang Manok), Atty. Mamerto Mondragon (Rain or Shine), and Bobby Rosales (Columbian Dyip), and Al Panlilio (Meralco), who is also president of the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP).
This season alone, the league already accommodated Team Pilipinas’ campaign in the World Cup qualifiers that pushes the season-ending meet to conclude at its limit on Dec. 13.
Three days after, the Rookie Draft will be held.

What is PEGIDA? What does PEGIDA mean? PEGIDA meaning - PEGIDA pronunciation - PEGIDA definition - PEGIDA explanation - How to pronounce PEGIDA? Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under http://ift.tt/yjiNZw license. Patriotic Europeans Against the Islamisation of the West (Occident) (German: Patriotische Europäer gegen die Islamisierung des Abendlandes), abbreviated PEGIDA or Pegida, is a nationalist, anti-Islam, far-right political movement founded in Dresden in October 2014 that aims to resist what it sees as a threat posed by Islamic extremism, Islamisation and calling for the enforcement of existing laws to curb immigration, particularly for those Muslims whom it views as refusing to integrate. Offshoots of Pegida have been formed in various countries. Pegida was founded in October 2014 by Lutz Bachmann, who runs a public relations agency in Dresden. Bachmann's impetus for starting Pegida was witnessing a rally by supporters of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) on 10 October 2014 in Dresden, which he posted on YouTube on the same day. The next day he founded a Facebook group called Patriotische Europäer Gegen die Islamisierung des Abendlandes ("Patriotic Europeans against Islamisation of the Occident"). A few days earlier, on 7 October a group of Muslims, assumed to be Salafists, had violently attacked PKK supporters who were gathering after a demonstration against ISIL. The same day Yazidis and Muslim Chechens had violently clashed in Celle. On 26 October, out of 5,000 protesters, "at least 400 right-wing extremists went on a rampage in downtown Cologne during a demonstration" by "Hooligans Against Salafists". Bachmann mentioned these events in a release for his first demonstration. The first demonstration or "evening stroll" (according to Pegida) took place on 20 October 2014, and only attracted a handful of people. During the following days, the movement began gaining wider public attention, and subsequently the weekly Monday demonstrations drew larger numbers of people. Among the 7,500 participants on 1 December 2014 the police identified 80 to 120 hooligans. The demonstration grew to 10,000 people on 8 December 2014. During the weekly demonstrations on Monday evenings, Pegida supporters carried banners with slogans such as "For the preservation of our culture", "Against religious fanaticism, against any kind of radicalism, together without violence", and "Against religious wars on German soil". On 19 December 2014, PEGIDA e.V. was legally registered in Dresden under the registration ID VR 7750, with Bachmann as chairman, Rene Jahn vice-chairman and Kathrin Oertel as treasurer. Pegida also formally applied for the status of a nonprofit organisation. While the demonstration on 29 December 2014 was cancelled by the organisers, the movement continued to draw large numbers of participants in early January 2015. After the Charlie Hebdo shooting on 7 January 2015 in Paris, politicians (including ministers Thomas de Maiziere and Heiko Maas) warned Pegida against misusing the attack on Charlie Hebdo for its own political ends. On Saturday 10 January 2015 some 35,000 anti-Pegida protesters gathered to mourn the victims of Paris, observing a minute's silence in front of the Frauenkirche. On 12 January 2015, Pegida organisers organised a rally of some 25,000 participants. Pegida's main organiser, Bachmann, declared the six central political objectives of Pegida, which include calls for selective immigration and the expulsion of religious extremists, the right and duty to integrate, and tighter internal security. On 15 January 2015, a young Eritrean immigrant, Khaled Idris Bahray, was found stabbed to death in his Dresden high-rise apartment. International media correspondents portrayed an "atmosphere of hatred and resentment" and published social media comments of Pegida sympathisers, who had expressed disdain for the dead Eritrean. Pegida's organisers rejected any possible connection. One week later, the police investigation led to the arrest and eventual conviction of one of the victim's Eritrean housemates.....

Narvasa keeps a low profile as warring PBA board members forge uneasy peace
THE dissension was still palpable, but the PBA board was able to put up a united front – or at least a semblance of it – to ensure the league’s 43rd season opens as scheduled this Sunday.
Members of two warring factions within the league board sat in one table, conversed with each other, and occasionally shared laughter just like they often used to do in the past during the media launch of the new season on Wednesday.
Still, tension was evident inside the grand ballroom of Okada Manila.
During the question-and-answer portion, PBA director for communications Willie Marcial politely asked mediamen to refrain from asking about the current leadership imbroglio and the status of commissioner Chito Narvasa.
The only thing he can assure was the Philippine Cup starting on schedule on Dec. 17.
“I think we’re a very solid group right now. The promise which I made (during the PBA Press Corps Awards night about the PBA opening), that came from all 12 teams that come December 17, we’ll be up and running,” said outgoing chairman Mikee Romero, who stood as the spokesperson of the group during the press conference.
“Now this Sunday, what we shall be watching are the players. Forty three years. Ang masasabi ko lang, let the games begin,” added the Globalport team owner.
The 12 member teams – seven from the side that want Narvasa out and the five which stood behind the beleaguered commissioner – were all represented during the event.
Present were incoming chairman Ramoncito Fernandez (NLEX), Robert Non (San Miguel), Dickie Bachmann (Alaska), Siliman Sy (Blackwater), Bobby Rosales (KIA), Alfrancis Chua (Barangay Ginebra), Rene Pardo (Magnolia), Erick Arejola (Globalport), Atty. Mamerto Mondragon (Rain or Shine), and Atty. Raymund Zorilla (Phoenix).
Ryan Gregorio represented Meralco in the absence of governor Al Panlilio, while Magnum Membrere came for TnT Katropa on behalf of Ricky Vargas.
Narvasa sat with members of the league’s management committee and kept a low profile, answering just one question about the PBA commitment on the availability of players for Gilas Pilipinas in the next window of the FIBA World Cup qualifiers in February.
As incoming chairman, Fernandez guaranteed a lot is in store for the coming season, but would rather keep everything under wraps for the moment.
“There are a lot of plans, we can’t just scream it out,” he said. “Definitely, what the board promises is that we will have a more exciting year and we’ll continue to delight the millions of fans of the PBA. With your support, we’ll continue to make the PBA very relevant to the Filipinos.”
Owing to the impasse, the league decided to make the opening ceremony of the all-Filipino tournament a rather simple one.
“We still have a meeting with ManCom and TV5. Nagahol sila sa oras dahil sa mga pangyayari,” said Marcial. “Meron tayo kahit kaunting opening, pero meron tayong parade (of teams). Sigurado yun.”
As for the rest of the details, guess we just have to watch them unfold.
