it's true, and it's hard to describe, but i've got an involuntary scrapbook that lives in my brain, that my spirit feeds on eternally. moments in art and media of all kinds that are taped on the insides of my skull, and it goes beyond an i like that all the way to this has become a part of me without my asking it to. it's not a hyperfixation, a blorbo. it can be a five second moment in a movie. a single brushstroke in a painting.

or it could be this. this scene that i have been thinking about for twelve whole years. even when i forgot the entire goddamn plot of this story, i knew the exact wording of this scene. it hit me hard and it threw itself into my scrapbook. it affects my outlook, my artistry.

and i read it again today for the first time in twelve years. and i can't speak for its objective quality.

but goddamn does this push a button within me.

Vote Yes on the Innovation 2020 Referendum

Based on feedback from the Baldwin community, the Baldwin School District has outlined an ambitious but necessary capital improvement initiative known as Innovation 2020. This multi-year project will support critical enhancements to 100-year-old school facilities; library upgrades; new science, technology and mathematics learning spaces in the elementary schools; upgraded athletic and performing arts facilities; and Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant restrooms in all of the district’s schools.

Although funding will come from multiple sources, completion of the project requires a $158 million capital bond — a multi-year financing plan spread over several years. This capital bond would indeed translate into increased monthly taxes for Baldwin School District residents. Some taxpayers have expressed understandable concern about this increase. Still, a yes vote on March 18 is the right thing to do. Voting yes on the capital project referendum is voting for vital funding to support the education of 21st-century students in an increasingly science-, math- and technology-based world.

In a 2015 National Bureau of Economic Research working paper, Martorell, Stange and McFarlin explained that capital campaigns funded by school bonds do actually lead to tangible improvements in school facilities. Voting yes on the capital project referendum is voting yes to the continued success of our public schools, the center of this community, at a time when Baldwin has received downtown redevelopment funds from the state and a zoning overlay district has been established. A revitalized downtown coupled with modern schools will undoubtedly strengthen the infrastructure of the Baldwin community. Strong schools help make Baldwin a great place to live, raise a family, and/or start a business.

Voting yes on the capital project referendum is voting to protect the investment of Baldwin homeowners. Research from economics journals such as the Journal of Real Estate Research, the Journal of Housing Economics, and the Oxford Review of Economic Policy has repeatedly shown that high-quality public schools are related to quantifiable increases in property value in the district.

In the 2010 Quarterly Journal of Economics, authors Stephanie Cellini, Fernando Ferreira and Jesse Rothstein explained that school facilities are one of the most important public infrastructure investments. In specifically examining facility improvements financed through local bonds, they found that passage of a bond measure caused home prices in a district to rise by about 6 percent, and that this effect persisted for at least a decade. School spending raises property values (National Bureau of Economic Research, 2018). Good schools provide stability for a community, and that's positive for the property values of everyone who lives nearby. Additionally, the National Bureau of Economic Research (2018), in examining school spending across a range of districts and counties, found no evidence of net overspending or inefficient spending of public funds by public school districts.

Lastly, although air conditioning may seem like a luxury, classroom temperature and humidity are actually critical factors in student achievement. In a study of standardized test scores from the entire United States, Roach and Whitney (2019) found that rising average temperatures harm student learning. In a 2019 National Bureau of Economic Research article entitled “Heat and Learning,” the authors showed that elevated classroom temperatures could impair decision-making and reduce the effectiveness of instruction. To meet current student and faculty needs, the district has been using window AC units, which are notoriously inefficient. Energy efficient central air conditioning is the smarter and cheaper choice in the long run.

As an educational psychology doctoral candidate and educator, a Baldwin Civic Association board member and a graduate of the Baldwin School district, I will be voting yes on March 18 for the continued success of the Baldwin community, my Baldwin community. Delaying this to some future time would most likely mean increased interest rates and increased project costs. Vote yes on March 18 for the capital project referendum and for the future of beautiful Baldwin.

  Team Saint Lucia Shines as 3×3 strengthens Unity throughout the Region

  Saint Lucia’s Male and Female National 3×3 team returned home from a successful team and nation building Antilles 3×3 Hoops Finals in Guadeloupe. 

A total of 68 players from 10 countries of the region participated in the three (3) day event which apart from the 3×3 Mixed Nations Basketball Tournament, also featured a Youth Leadership and Life Skills workshop. 

Female Team Captain Mia George, during her presentation, encouraged the idea of organizing more 3×3 Basketball games during recess periods at school as a practical method to raise the awareness of the sport to not only attract the male students but also encourage the females who are interested in 3×3 Basketball.  

Said Mia during the Youth Leadership Workshop, “We don’t have enough female players but if we can introduce them to the game during school, show them that it’s fun and easy to play, we may start to head towards gender equality in basketball players”.

Our players were able to add to their skill sets, leadership abilities that would be advantageous to them on and off the court. 

Games were played on Saturday and Sunday and with the mixed nation’s format players from 9 of the 10 countries present were able to play in the finals.

Saint Lucia’s Romia Joseph together with Breanna Charles from Trinidad and Tobago, Raymi Coueta from Martinique and Rhea Richards from Antigua and Barbuda won the Antilles 3×3 Female Finals. Mia George’s team MSNK Tabs placed third overall in the competition. 

Despite our boys not featuring in the winner’s circle, Cheic Alphonse’s squad placed second and Cletuson Leon and the Underrated Kings run ended in the semi-finals.  

Co-organizer and President of the ‘Ligue Régional de Guadeloupe de Basketball’ Patrice Alexis, insisted that the gathering was able to build a fraternity and a tolerance within the youths of the Caribbean, “although we are from different territories, we all dream of the same sport”.

Team Saint Lucia consisted of Renair Yarde, Cletuson Leon, Keon Allen and Cheic Alphonse (Males), Mia George, Andaizia Cherry, Sybille Eugene and Romia Joseph(Females).

出發前忙亂不堪，一直忙著要趕在出發前進窯素燒，不要說回家整理行李，就連吃飯時間都沒有了！

生平第一次放手讓小孩整理行李，整理家庭，約在Landstrasse碰面坐火車去機場。

“先生，你們沒有先處理好登機證，你們必須先到對面的櫃臺付款，然後我才有辦法幫你們辦好登機手續……”在機場乾等了幾個小時後走到check in櫃臺聽到這樣的答覆。

唉！太忙了！忙到都忘了要先印登機卡。

排在一列跟我們這一家一樣都需要補繳費用的人群，心裡“稍稍地”埋怨Renair 航空的網路設計有許多陷阱，不像Easy jet會提醒你趕快辦理好登機手續。我還是一派輕鬆，直到我聽到需繳交的款項……

“先生，你總共需要繳330歐元……”

天啊！就忘了這麼幾個在手機上按按的動作需要這麼高額的“補繳”費用……

心好痛!真的好痛!這三佰多元是我們身上僅剩下的，這三佰多元能付在Zagreb一個月的房租……
