F4 THAILAND: BOYS OVER FLOWERS - A DAY IN LIFE WITHOUT BLS

So today marks the fifth day in the last three months that I’ve watched something other than a BL. Did I enjoy it? Yes. Am I absolutely dying to go back to BLs? ABSO-FUCKING-LUTELY. No shade to these series, it’s just… how my brain is now wired. If I see hot guys, they need to kiss. Every second without a smooch feels like wasted air. Ahem. Apologies.

Anyway - my highlight for the past two days? F4 Thailand.

Now listen. This one is hard to review because I genuinely enjoyed it. But let’s not pretend the plot doesn’t scream high school nonsense from start to finish. Gorya is 15 when the chaos begins. Thyme is ready to take over a corporation at 17. Ren is out here willing to probably elope with Mira before graduation. Like, make it a college setting, at least! I would’ve believed the whole “we have our own elite campus where bullying is the norm” thing if they were 18+. The ages just make the trauma feel extra nauseating.

That being said: YES, I still bought into Gorya falling for not one, but two of her tormentors. Obviously.

But let’s talk about the real issue we have here: SECOND LEAD SYNDROME™. HOW did y’all survive watching this weekly in 2022? How did you sit there, week after week, knowing Ren (aka Dew, aka my entire heart) was going to be sad, poetic, and beautiful, with no happy ending? I am OBSESSED with Dew. I’m counting the seconds until his new series with OffGun airs. Put Dew in a BL. I am BEGGING.

I both loved and hated the ambiguity of Ren’s feelings. That scene at Gorya’s parent’s farm? He looked so sincere, like he was genuinely ready to stay if she said the word. It felt like he was willing to burn bridges with F4, knowing Thyme would be back at some point. But… F4 had already kidnapped Thyme to make him realize he was still in love (because, you know, he’s OLD THYME, we want NEW THYME - it’s almost like he has multiple personality disorder) and the video was ready for Gorya to watch. So was Ren serious? Or was it an elaborate ploy? I choose to believe he was ready to open a clinic and live a soft life with Gorya. I’m sure this discourse has been discussed and dissected religiously by fans back then - across all adaptations and the original manga - but honestly, I don’t have the bandwidth to spiral over it right now. It can just remain beautifully, tragically unresolved in my mind.

That said, Gorya and Thyme? A mess. A perfect match. I’ve never seen two people so chaotic, so loud, so violent, so meant for each other. I think Ren is far too composed and intense for someone like Gorya. She wouldn’t know what to do with a man like him - quiet, self-assured, exuding smoldering sexual energy with every glance, every brushstroke. He’s the type who’ll whisper gently in your ear, then ruin you in the best way possible - headboard shattered, soul ascending, speaking in tongues. That’s his vibe. Gorya can have her loud, chaotic man-child. I’LL TAKE REN.

I did love each F4 member’s distinct style - MJ’s black, dangerous mystery, Kavin’s luxurious rich playboy energy, Thyme’s leopard printed chaos incarnate, and Ren’s pastel serenity. Visually, this show delivered.

Plot-wise? Safe. Characters? Stupid with feelings, smart with scheming - as one does. Villains were villaining. Evil mom turned soft overnight. No surprises. And I do love a good redemption arc - I was already smitten with my F4 boys even when they were being literal menaces. So my biggest problem? The rest of the fucking school. Like - NOT THE SAME GUYS WHO BEAT GORYA UP NOW FORMING ANTI-F4 AND BEATING THYME UP?? Talay, babe, you of all people shouldn’t be throwing stones when you live in a glass clique. Be serious. Calm down.

Oh and don’t think I missed this: one accidental kiss, one disguised kiss, and one real kiss? If I keep watching straight GMMTV dramas, I’m going to start screaming every time the camera pans away. The low-heat romance is killing me softly.

TL;DR: I liked it. I hated it. I mourned Ren. I yelled at the screen. But I made it through. BLs, I’m coming home.

Everything about this scene is hilarious, from the accidental kiss to Kavin and MJ exclaiming "oh my God" in unison to Thyme's reactions.

 Bwahahahahah! I especially love how it takes a second for his brain to catch up with what happened and you see his face go from his ready to brawl “what did you do to me” to giddy “what did you do to me” and then he bolts trying to hide a grin and ahahahahahah

okay i binge watched up until midway through ep 14, where i am now taking a rage-break from the show:

im sure im in the minority, but kavin/kaning does nothing for me. that said i do like the scenes where he helps out at the flower shop

uncle ga is my mvp for this drama, btw. this man is me anytime im watching a high school drama

thyme's actor is so charismatic and charming that even when he's doing horrible shit (like destroying that classroom) him/the writing still manages to win you over and oh no

i like ren more now! turns out he just needed to get dumped after a dramatic relocation to france i guess.

the lita arc went on way too damn long. it was interesting at first but by the end i was tapping my watch waiting for it to get a move on. the maid shit was also weird and i was not into that (although at least the staff were a cute little squad for gorya!)

talay arc also went on too long, and tbh thyme should probably go to jail for a bit. but i get what they were trying to do. also 95% of the characters should probably go to jail for a little bit, so

omg f3 are being such good sports about thyme/gorya. if my friend was actively involving me in this bombastic romance drama i would put my phone on do not disturb and simply sleep through their thirteenth breakup

Kavin x Kaning Requests

I’m begging y’all please write fanfics based on these (please longer ones, but not necessarily multi chapter unless it fits the prompts). These are all Kaning and Kavin fics (each ones a separate story, but some are similar if you wanna take inspiration from whatever you will). Please if you write them, let me know about it and how to find it!! I largely don’t care if they start off as friends and get together or stay friends and the fic just shows more tension or if they’re together and stay together, but please don’t make them end depressingly (like with them together and then broken up at the end). Also I really don’t care if multiple people write on the same thing if that’s a concern (idk).

A Kaning/Kavin fic- Kaning is the daughter of a mafia family. I imagine this as just Gorya already knowing and F4 figuring it out (maybe MJ figures it out first because of the rumors of his family’s involvement)

A Kaning/Kavin fic- Kaning is a rich heiress but no one but Gorya and the owner of the flower shop know. She doesn’t try to hide it but she also doesn’t tell others. Her family likes to stay out of the limelight and especially keeps the children fairly anonymous even from other rich families. Kaning was raised by her father from a certain age but her mother took her from him when she was born and raised her for a bit (in this time she was neglectful and borderline abusive). She also meant Gorya during this time and that’s how they became bffs even though she’s wealthy. So the fic would just be F4 finding out about her being wealthy(maybe she thought they already knew [maybe due to her blasé reaction to just giving away 4000 baht. In the show it was impulsiveness, but in this she could be rich]) and how she was raised (like how her mother treated her. Maybe her and Thyme bond). Maybe the reason she works with Gawao is because he took care of her when her mom wasn’t able to. This will probably change a few things like Kaning’s dad being fired by Roselyn. I like that in some fanfics, she’s a pianist so maybe she goes to a school for music so she’s not necessarily in a normal school, but also not in Kosher.

A Kaning/Kavin fic- takes place after they get together. Kavin being protective of Kaning - like to the point of a fight. Like Kaning’s being threatened by some guy or harassed and Kavin defends her (bonus points if the story mentions the size difference between the two and how small Kaning is. I love the height difference) and they comfort each others afterwards

A Kaning/Kavin fic- Instead of just Gorya, Kaning was also kidnapped by anti-F4 (because they realized she was also important to them, especially Kavin).

A Kaning/Kavin fic- similar to the previous prompt, someone goes after Kaning (verbally or physically) because of Kavin’s playboy past, they say some things about Kavin and Kaning defends him. He also protects her. It’s very sweet. (This could also play out like that one scene in the Nevertheless kdrama, but it actually ends in the two being a stronger place than they were before unlike in that show)

A Kaning/Kavin fic- a customer is making Kaning uncomfortable and Kavin comes in during the interaction and stays with her at the store until he leaves and afterwards to make sure she’s ok

A Kaning/Kavin fic- MJ (and/or Ren) and Kaning becoming best friends, the rest of F4 and Gorya finding it amusing/endearing, and Kavin not necessarily always loving this development in its entirety (but also sometimes still finding it cute)

A Kaning/Kavin fic- Kaning goes to Kosher with Gorya (she does not replace Hana, but instead stands alongside Gorya during that whole thing). She doesn’t necessarily get a red card, but she would try to protect Gorya which might drag her into the bullying. This is how she catches Kavin’s attention and maybe he protects her like Ren protects Gorya. The events progress like in the show. This can also incorporate the above prompt where Kaning is kidnapped alongside Gorya by anti-f4.

A Kaning/Kavin fic- takes place after they get together. Kavin takes Kaning to a club with him (I like the idea of her wearing a little black dress with a black ribbon) and Kavin doesn’t love the amount of people checking out Kaning

F4 Thailand: Boys Over Flowers: (First Episode Aired:) December 18, 2021 (Last Episode Aired:) April 9, 2022 (16 Episodes)

My Opinion: As you can tell already from the list above I am someone who has watched a variety of different shows. If you are familiar with my previous list then you must know that I have watched the Korean version of Boys Over Flowers along with the Japanese one. I am currently still watching the mainland China version. . . But one thing for sure is I think this might be my favorite version of them all. Okay hear me out I was having a hard time deciding between the Japanese version and this one. Both versions of this show did an amazing job is showing the friendship among F4 and the chemistry between the two main leads. I used to put the Korean one in a petal of stool but after seeing the other versions . . . I have a lot of things I can say about the Korean one which makes it my least favorite but that will be a whole other post. Back to my review on this. I think they did an amazing job choosing the casting for this show overall and I like that there were some changes added in this storyline (Spoiler alert STOP READING IF YOU DONT WANT TO KNOW) But towards the ending, they usually have the male lead to lose his memory and another character swooping in and making him believe that the main lead loved her instead of his actual love. BUT THEY DIDN'T DO THAT. THANK GOD… but yeah let me stop this is getting longer than I anticipated. All I want to say IS GO WATCH THIS PLEASE

Summary: Gorya is a simple girl who works at a flower shop. She passes an exam and gets accepted into a prestigious and luxurious school attended by the wealthy. The school is ruled by an elite clique known as the F4 consisting of four rich, handsome and spoiled boys. Gorya is the only one who stands up to their bullying, leaving all the boys in awe, especially Thyme, the group's leader. Almost instantly smitten by Gorya, Thyme romantically pursues her but she has no interest in him due to first impressions. She instead falls for his best friend Ren, However, Ren is still in love with his childhood love Mira. In all the chaos of school, Gorya can't help but find herself falling for Thyme because of his generosity to her and her family and his change of character.
