CONTENT

- NSFW will be likely on this blog but not a constant. If you’re uncomfortable with murder, gore, blood, abuse, etc. (or any mentioning of these things); Then this blog isn’t for you. Sexual things may occur from time to time but it’ll be rare and tagged accordingly!

RP ETIQUETTE

- Personal blogs that follow me will usually be blocked. If you have a sideblog that’s your roleplay blog, message me and let me know, or have it stated somewhere on your blog so that I’m aware! I’ve tried in the past to let personals chill here but after weird inbox messages and nonstop spam in different areas, I no longer tolerate them.

- I don’t usually care about reblog karma. I will always personally reblog memes and prompts from their sources, and I won’t get angry if you reblog from me and don’t send something in every single time. However, I WILL get upset if you start to use me as your CONSTANT meme or prompt resource. This means, if you constantly reblog memes from me and never send even ONE back in to me. I will probably say something to you! This is a roleplay blog, and it gets discouraging after a while if you take everything I reblog and never bother to try and send anything back.

- I will ALWAYS read your rules page before I follow you. I will also do my best to make sure I send in passwords or any other form of verification. HOWEVER, I follow A LOT of people so if I ever break a rule of yours, I can assure it was probably an accident. Just message me privately and let me know and I’ll fix it, no problem!

- I have anxiety and my memory and attention span can be shitty and sporadic at times. So it’s totally okay to remind me of replies I owe if it’s been a week or so since I’ve replied! HOWEVER, do NOT harass me or constantly pester me to reply to a thread. Otherwise I’ll drop it completely, and may even soft block you if you become hateful about it.

- Going off what I said above, my memory is bad at times. I also follow a TON of people. I WILL forget things. I may forget about replying to threads, I might also forget about replying to ooc messages, and even certain rules or headcanons about your blog or characters. I can PROMISE you this is not intentional though, and I encourage you to nudge or remind me of things if I DO forget!! Just again, do not be rude about it or hateful. I promise I’m doing my best.

- Sometimes I may get overwhelmed by the amount of threads I’ve accumulated. Or I may not know how to continue a thread if it hits a dead end and I can’t think of anything to keep it going. If this happens I’ll most likely drop a few that I may not be feeling atm. If this happens I will do my best to message you first if I decide to drop a thread of ours!

INTERACTING

- I will ONLY interact with MUTUALS. This means if you follow me and I am not following you back, then I’m probably not interested. My inbox is always open though to anyone even if we aren’t mutuals!

- I will interact with ocs and canon characters from different fandoms. But again we have to be MUTUALS, and I do ask that you have an about page or post somewhere that I can get to, just in case I’m not familiar with your character.

💖 welcome to raine's stupidly-long guide to starting tumblr rp! 💖 qualification: i've had this blog for 11 years. fml disclaimer: still all just from my perspective, i'm just one gal with opinions hehe

start out by making a new blog for your character. (i wouldn't recommend starting out with a sideblog personally, since you can't send asks from them). choose a url that feels relevant. i'm always a fan of the ol "smush two words together that sound nice" technique — ie, my other blogs are huntershowl and icarusplunged — which never seems to fully go out of style. really you can do whatever feels right to you :)

the most important part of setting up an rp blog is creating a rules page and, if you're writing an OC, an about page. the rules set up your boundaries, your wants and don't wants, anything you want someone to know before they follow you. the about page should give new partners everything they need to know about your character — personality, appearance, setting/lore, any backstory you want to display publicly.

feel free to look around at different rpers' rules pages and use them as inspiration! as long as nothing is copypasted and everything is your own original content, which brings me to etiquette.

etiquette!

'tis largely an Unspoken Thing in the rpc (rp community), and breaching it can def make people feel uncomfortable (even though that's something that Should be in rules pages, most of us forget haha). here are the things i can think of off the top of my head:

the way to reach out to new people is simply to follow them. that's all you gotta do! if they don't follow back, don't push, just unfollow them after a few weeks and move on. it's almost never personal!

in that vein, if someone's blog is private/selective/mutuals-only, wait to interact until they follow back.

once they do, it's up to you how you want to move forward — usually i'll wait until they post some sort of interaction call for you to like. a starter call, a plotting call, orrrr if they reblog an ask meme (which is like a list of sentence prompts! you can choose one from the list and send it as an ask, which they can use as an rp starter.) you can also just IM them though :)

don't reblog non-rp content (ask memes, quotes/imagery, etc) directly from another rp blog, it clogs up their notifications! just reblog from the original post instead.

don't interact with other people's threads (liking or reblogging, but feel free to read them and talk about them ooc!), and only respond to a starter if it's labeled as open — otherwise it was probably written for another rper specifically.

try not to prod people too hard if they haven't responded in a while. some folks are okay with being reminded about a forgotten thread a few weeks after replies stall out.

always tag nsft (not safe for tumblr, the other acronym gets flagged/hidden) and very upsetting content — gore, SA or abuse mentions, etc. i've seen some people starting to use "dead dove do not eat" as a catch-all for super dark content, but honestly that phrase gives me the heebiest of jeebies so i prefer to go with individual tags

general platformless rp etiquette rules apply: don't steal other people's content, don't assume or control the other character's actions/thoughts/etc.

be kind to each other, most of all. communicate when you have a problem with someone, rather than making a vague/callout post about them. that being said, i'm a proponent of the block button — blocking people is okay! it's not a big deal. this is a hobby space and no one is entitled to you. advocate for yourself!!

now: RP STRUCTURE (the fun part)

we don't really do "script" style rp on tumblr — it'll usually, if not always, be in prose/paragraph form. formatting is a fun touch, but not necessary. as you can see, i'm using small text here with some little chunks of text in bold/italic or regular size text to add some visual interest. again, not necessary! experiment, figure out what you like!

lots of people will use icons of different sizes — 100x100 is the most common, but they really do vary. i would suggest going smaller rather than bigger (like don't use full post-width gifs or icons, try to keep them under half the size of the post? that's the most common vibe at least.)

icons can be used to "illustrate" your character's expression among a bunch of text, if you want Visual Spice. but they are soooo not necessary! totally up to you.

to reply to a thread, reblog it and add your post.

important: i highly recommend downloading and installing XKIT in your browser. it's an extension that lets you trim posts to the last two reblogs (common around here), customize your blog experience, and just makes it a lot easier to exist on tumblr haha.

Roleplay etiquette

This should go without saying but please refrain from godmodding/taking control over my character in our interactions, this includes auto hitting in violent/confrontational situations. No info-modding or meta-gaming, your character should not be able to glean information out of any internal dialog unless they can straight up read minds (in which case I would like to be made aware of this power beforehand). Remember that the muse and her values and behaviors are not a reflection of the writer. I do not agree with or condone 90% of the things that she says and does--her actions are not to be glorified or romanticized, Lute is absolutely meant to be viewed as a villain.

Interactions

Friends/mains will always take priority when it comes to threads--some of you may find this unfair but RP is a hobby and I reserve the right to engage with it In whatever way is most fun and fulfilling for myself. Don't let this discourage you from approaching if you have a plot in mind or sending in memes/starters. I'm happy to run with all sorts of stories and scenarios granted I'm given an idea to work off of. That being said, I am incredibly disorganized so threads have a tendency to slip through the cracks, don't be afraid to (politely) remind me of our interaction when this happens. I will reblog memes somewhat regularly but OOC plotting is my personal preference. I tend to struggle scrounging up enough motivation for threads with no clear direction. Lute is a character who shines the most when she is acting as an obstacle or an uplifting force to the people around her. She thrives poorly in slice-of-life type of scenarios, please keep this in mind.

Fight scenes

As a general rule, I won't write figh scenes with sinner muses. Lute isn't somebody that mortal souls are meant to be able to fight off—as the first lieutenant of the heavenly host she wouldn't be much of a threat if she sat around their power level. This isn't something I see myself budging on unless you have very solid reasoning for why you think your sinner could take her on. Same goes for the hellborn, lower class angels and humans. That being said, if your muse (sinner/human/anyone weaker than Lute) goes out of their way to taunt or harass her she will respond with violence. Keep this in mind before you go pushing her buttons.

Shipping

Ah, shipping, the magical thing which makes the rpc go 'round! Lute is not easy to ship with, like, at all! I wouldn't call her unshippable necessarily but you must be aware that she is an incredibly twisted and broken individual, ergo, any relationship she finds herself being a part of is at major risk of becoming unbalanced and/or toxic. I am very, very, veryveryvery picky with her romantic candidates as a result. Do not try to force ship with her, that is a surefire to be irrevocably crossed off as a potential partner. Lute has a tendency to develop crushes on a very specific type of people--do not take this as a sign that I'm trying to push a ship on you--it's just a character quirk that she has. Shipping will never take priority over the overarching plot of this blog. Again, Lute isn't a character who does well in domestic situations, tension, action and conflict is where it's at for her.

Smut

I will write smut on rare occasions, mostly on sindays. I exclusively write this type of content with longtime mutuals. Feel free to ask me for a link to my NSFW blog.

Drama

As a rule of thumb: don't. If there's a problematic individual you feel I should be made aware of, address the issue with me OOC. That's all I have to say on the matter. I like to keep my space as drama/discourse free as possible.

Blocking

Please hardblock me when you unfollow! I have a very poor memory so it's not unlikely that I might refollow if you fail to do this. If you happen to find yourself blocked by me, rest assured that it is very rarely a personal matter. Chances are I just don't see us vibing or you're somebody that i decided to unfollow for one reason or another. All the same, block evading is not cool if there's a legit reason behind it (and you will be made aware if there is). Please don't do that!

responses : my rule with regards to reply length has always been to write a response that i can respond to. the length doesn’t matter to me as much as the content itself. i myself write incredibly variable responses ranging from a few sentences to 5+ paragraphs, and typically try to return the same effort my partner is putting in. i mostly likely will not be using gifs / icons , just because i’m not used to it , not all of my characters have fcs , and not all of my fcs have good content for gifs / icons . i might use them on a case by case basis , but don’t expect it from me .

faceclaims : i don’t have any banned fcs so to speak , however if they are a known bigot or predator i will not write against them . my own fcs are just to give an idea of what my muses look like , but is not necessarily an identical match in terms of style , certain aspects of their appearance ( eg. tattoos ) , personality , etc .

This blog is 18+. I understand that Ouran is many younger people's first anime but I'm 21+ and I don't feel comfortable roleplaying with minors. This blog will probably feature incest or incestual themes due to the nature of Kaoru's relationship with his brother. A reminder that the incest is FICTIONAL. I WOULD UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES CONDONE INCEST IRL but in fiction, it's ok. These characters are not real people. They are characters in a show that already have a pre established incestual relationship. Do not come for me.

Do not reblog my threads if you aren't involved. This is not only annoying but also extremely rude. Don't fucking do it.

I will be referring to the anime and manga versions of Kaoru as well as my own Headcannons, so, my portrayal might not be exactly the same as someone else's and that's ok.

This event is a lowkey one, designed for us to take some time to catch up on asks, rec lists, and other blog pages that happen mostly in the background such as the masterlists, database, and post tagging.

This blog is a lot of work! And we're happy to help out with promoting authors and exposing readers to new and interesting stories based on their interests!

That being said, we need a break!

This is why we are closing the inbox for July.

Please refrain from sending asks for rec lists through submissions. We’re leaving that line open specifically for new authors to submit their projects.

We are going to utilize this time to try and clear out our inbox--we have over 100 messages, most of them asking for rec lists, which take a few weeks at a time to properly curate, tag, and put in the queue.

We will also be working behind the scenes on other projects we hope to show off soon!

Now, to get into some of the details. (This applies regardless of the event to every ask sent, even if the inbox is currently closed.)

RULES WHEN SENDING ASKS

If you can and it is relevant, please tag your asks with content warnings in the beginning. Such as (cw violence) or (cw death), this is an extra precaution to keep both our mods and our readers safe and well-advised. This will also make tagging easier!

Please keep your asks as brief as you can! Any asks that are more than two asks long may get eaten by the Tumblr machine and/or may not be answered due to length.

If your ask hasn't been answered, it may be because it already has been! Be sure to search the tags and FAQ before sending in an ask.

Please don't spam! We won't respond to inappropriate asks or asks that have already been answered.

Recommendation lists

If you are submitting an ask for a rec list please be aware that these lists take a lot of time and effort to make! In average, it might take us up to two weeks to fully finish and queue a rec list, sometimes even longer. We’re happy to put them together but we ask for patience and understanding.

With that in mind, here are some guidelines:

Please look through the #interact-if asks and #if: rec list tags before sending and ask.

Constantly looking out and keeping track of IF projects takes a good chunk of our time among our other responsibilities as mods. For this reason, we came up with a tagging system that makes it easy for our audience to look through the blog. Unfortunately, it gets overlooked most of the time.

And for this reason, we get repetitive asks, which we ignore and delete.

The tagging system is there for your and our convenience. If you’re not sure whether you’re asking for a rec list of the same theme/genre that has already been posted, please consider looking through the aforementioned tags before sending an ask.

As much as we love entertaining the rec list asks, it does tend to be bothersome having to constantly reblog and link new asks to the posted rec lists, as well as reminding people to use the tagging system.

Please make your ask neither too broad nor specific.

This isn’t to sound finicky we promise! If an ask is looking for fantasy IFs without specifics we cannot properly curate a list of what you’re looking for. Is it modern fantasy? Medieval? Non-Eurocentric? Do you want fae fantasy? Supernatural? Fantasy is one of the most popular genres and asks like this example we cannot properly answer.

This is why we ask for rec list requests to be not too broad.

As for narrow–too narrow an ask will likely return a very short or non-existent list! At the end of the day there are only so many IFs and very specific niches may not be filled. We will try our best to answer, but likely your list will result in games adjacent to your request that we think best kind of sort of fit your request. We’re doing our best with the IFs that are out there.

Please be patient!

We often spend several days working on a single list. If your ask hasn’t been answered yet it may still be in the works or in our queue! If it’s been a long while and it still has not been answered, it may have been ignored for a variety of reasons including: Too broad an ask, too similar to previous rec lists, contains NSFW or offensive materials, etc. Please refrain from sending multiple check up asks

On the topic of NSFW asks/content…

We have received some inquiries regarding NSFW (like smutty scenes) recommendations in IF recently, and believe it best to clarify the stance Interact IF has on the matter.

We will be refraining from answering questions about explicit sexual content in IF. We as a team do not feel we have the expertise to help with this, nor have we been on the lookout for explicitly sexual IFs.

As well, it is not entirely suitable for the blog, as Interact IF is for all ages and there may be minors following it.

We would like this blog to remain as SFW as we can manage, with games properly tagged for their age groups and limiting asks and rec lists to non-sexually-explicit content.

With that in mind, feel free to get in contact with us anytime and we’ll do our best to find what you’re looking for!

Game Recommendations

Before sending in a game, please keep these aspects in mind:

DO

The game must be interactive fiction–the reader plays a character (either customizable or pre-determined) and makes choices that influence the game in some way.

The game can be text-based or a visual novel.

The game does NOT violate copyright (i.e. A published for-profit IF that is using the Star Wars universe. If it is not-for-profit (it’s free to play) then this is fine)

DON’T

If you play a character and can physically move them (walk, run, jump, attack), we consider this a video game and isn’t currently a niche we are supporting.

Recommend a game produced by a company–we are here to support individual authors or games written collaboratively by a group of authors/artists/etc.

Don’t recommend games that glorify violence, sexual violence, racism, sexism, and so on. Or which has (an) author(s) who also have a history of having engaged In aspects like these.

If your rec is good to go, here’s what you have to do! If you are able please provide a link to the post to reblog - this makes it a lot easier on us!If the game is 18+What language/program the game is in (Twine, Choicescript, Ren'py, etc.)If the game has a currently playable demo. I can’t find a game and can’t remember the title, help!

If you’re struggling to find a beloved game and can’t remember the title–go to our Reddit and see if it’s there at the Lost & Found! If not, you can ask our community on the Reddit to help find it, or join our discord and ask there!

I noticed you failed to include x game on a list, so I will inform the author about it.

Please, don’t. The mods here are nothing but human, so we do our best to include as many games as we can remember, and frequently ask other people for help. However, this doesn’t mean we will include every single game in existence. We will forget, things will slip, so the least we ask of you is to leave a reply or send an ask and we will add it in. We promise we always keep a close eye on those.

The extra step of informing the author about this is unnecessary. The only thing you’re causing is either making the author feel left out or having them reach out to us to be added, which is essentially the same thing we ask of you to do. There’s no need to get a third party involved within something that can be easily tackled, so please respect us instead of putting our blog in a bad light.

The only suggestions we ignore and might erase are the ones we realize don’t fit the theme of the ask, or ones that don’t fit the guidelines specified in the question right below this.

What we do not promote.

Trans-exclusive radical feminism

Gratuitous sexual violence (This includes pedophilia, domestic abuse, r*pe, etc.)

Racism, including cultural appropriation, stereotyping, whitewashing, brown face, etc.

Here we are again. This is a post to remind folks that in no way and in no universe does ‘No’ means anything other than ‘No’. This is not up for discussion or debate.

Attached herewith are screenshots of a conversation I had with the user named @stormkitty97 over the past week and I will get into why I believe that this is abhorrent behaviour. If you’ve been following my posts for the two days, yes this is the issue regarding my fic 晒太阳 which is posted here on AO3 and originally here on Tumblr as a fic response to an Anon prompt I received.

And at the end, all they had to say was this

So, here’s why I am making this post and here is why I am not okay with what happened:

This individual has not expressed a willingness to understand or respect my wishes. They have exhibited behaviours that are consistent with someone who intends to proceed with their intentions regardless of whatever I have told them.

There is a very clear distinction between ‘continuing’ and ‘rewriting’, and this falls in the latter. I only agreed to this individual’s request because they stated they would like to ‘continue’ my piece (see Visual No.1). In no way was it made clear to me during the period they sought my permission that they would like to ‘rewrite’ - and this includes ‘adding on’, ‘editing’, ‘changing’ - any part of my piece.

I repeatedly expressed that I do not condone, agree or approve of them rewriting my work to pass off as their own. If they had wanted to do an original piece of their own, why did they deliberately write to me asking to ‘continue’ my fic and then send me a copy pasted Google doc of my work with what they had called ‘small changes’? I believe that from the beginning, they had no intentions of doing a ‘continuation’ and instead had wanted to ‘rewrite’ my work to pass of as their own.

I have no issue with people writing fics based on fics or random headcanons that I wrote. It’s fandom! That’s part of the fun, in my honest opinion! It’s been done before and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed everyone’s lovely efforts and I consider it quite an honour. But this person isn’t doing that. This person is blatantly telling me to my face that they would like to copy paste my stuff and use as their first chapter after, what they call, “if I change it enough so it’s not using any of your original words”. How would I be okay with this? How can or should I be okay with this? This individual said this even after me telling them ‘no’ repeatedly and even after me telling them the parameters of what my permission includes (see Visuals 3, 4, 6, 9)

So, what now?

This individual has rescinded my access to the Google doc and I no longer can see what they’re doing to what they’re calling “Chapter One” of their work. But before I was denied access, I managed to screenshot whatever progress they have made and if anyone wants them, I will include them in a reblog.

I do 100% believe that they will post that fic and there’s nothing much I can do about it. But what I can do is make this post. There are certain fandom etiquettes that you do not violate, there are lines you do not cross. I have repeatedly done my level best to make what I am comfortable with clear and distinct in my disclaimers and how my works can be accessed especially on AO3. I know I can’t stop everything and worse still, I can’t know every nook and cranny of the whole wide web. What I can do is just these small things.

My intent in making this post is not to tell people to spam or flame or harass this individual. They’re gonna do what they’re gonna do. I’m just calling out what I see as unacceptable behaviour. Once this post goes live, I will be blocking them. If anyone knows this person and is trying to defend them, please don’t. I will exercise the block button liberally.

I've seen a number of posts the last couple of days about Tumblr etiquette. One of them talked about how you can add tags for organisational purposes, or even write out your thoughts in a small informal essay in the tags

And while this is all well and good, I haven't seen anyone really talk about how reblogs — especially reblogs with tags — could make someone's day, even if you're literally just yelling that you love something or agree with something in the tags? how it helps create the community we have? how it literally makes us feel less isolated because there's a social interaction taking place?

Maybe it's just me, but give me a moment to talk about my experience here (the next paragraph is context, and it's rough, so please heed the content warnings — if you want to skip the entire section about my own experiences, scroll down to the next paragraph break marked by one dot)

A couple of months before Christmas last year, my mum yelled at me when I came out to her. She told me I'm not mature enough to make that decision (I'll be 24 this year, and haven't lived at home in almost eight years). She started suggesting corrective therapy. I spent a little over a week so ill I couldn't leave my bed for more than a few minutes, and only had food because one of my flatmates offered to get me a bag of crisps and some crackers. Then my back gave in. I didn't have the brain power to get properly involved in my D&D group, much less work on my written projects. None of my friends live in the area, and I don't want to always talk about the negative stuff in my life when I talk to them online, so I don't bring it up unless they ask. Twice my thoughts spiralled into a black hole of "I don't want to do any of this anymore". When I reached out to my therapist, they told me they were on leave and couldn't help me. I felt so very alone, and I was having an awful time

But I could draw stuff

I've always wanted to create something that could bring other people joy, and because drawing was one of the few things keeping me afloat, I shared it. I didn't expect a lot of people to enjoy it. I didn't even expect people to find it. But a few did, and they reblogged with tags — tags that I re-read several times a day, because they showed I'd made someone happy with what made me happy

They weren't necessarily substantial or deep, but they responded. They interacted. None of the people who reblogged with tags had any idea what was going on behind the scenes, but those few lines — those little comments pointing out something they like or how it made them feel — they brought me so much joy

I just ... look at these:

Maybe it's weird, but I read every single tag. The longer ones — the ones that remind me that there's a random stranger out there that I gave a little joy, simply by doing something I enjoy — those, I print and stick up on a board over my bed, because they got me through a rough patch and mean so very much to me

Maybe I'm being sentimental, but my point about all of this is that there's a community here. A vibrant one, made up of people with ridiculously niche interests who want to share those interests — who want to find joy in those interests

I explained the appeal of it to my partner over text a while ago, and said: "[...] we're aware that we're playing up to social expectations most of the time in everyday life situations, and Tumblr becomes a space where we can strip those expectations away (or at least acknowledge that we're being shaped by them) and engage with each other on different terms to how we would engage elsewhere"

It's a space built on support, self-expression, and sharing joy, and this is so important to keep in mind

The way we maintain this is through reblogs and tags. Of course, we can send asks and messages too, but many of us feel too shy or awkward to talk to a stranger directly — especially if it's someone whose content we look at and think something along the lines of, "Wow, they must be such an accomplished human being and I kneel in the dust before them". I know I often feel that way about some of the people I follow

Tags become the next viable option for communication and appreciation, and, at least to me, it's like receiving little love notes under the door

I don't know if it's the same for all content creators (or rebloggers), but your tags could literally make a random person online stupidly happy and less isolated, and give them the strength they need to hold on just a little longer

NOTE: I'm not saying you have to tag. I'm not saying you have to reblog. Half the time, I myself only use organisational tags. Occasionally, I forget to tag. I'm still figuring out how to organise my blog. And that's ok — I'm not trying to make a point about whether there's any moral or ethical duty involved here. What I am trying to say, is that the way social interactions work here is so important to the way this space functions as a community, and that it can and does affect our everyday lives

Royal simblr event/collab etiquette

Hey everyone! 

Are you a new royal simblr wondering how to get started about collaborating with others in the community? Or have you been around a while but you have been too shy to ask people and want to know how you can make friends in the community? Well, look no further than this handy little guide to the thus-far unwritten royal simblr event/collab etiquette! It’s a long post so I’ve put it under the cut. With these tips you, and everyone else, can have a great time in the community!

What is an event/collab?

So, usually these will be weddings, funerals, coronations, balls and state visits but you can always come up with new things if you want to host other royal simblrs on yours. Others may collaborate on friendships or marriages, christenings, or even rivalries... there are a lot of possibilities, this is a community that thrives on collaborations.

Inviting people over

If you’re ready to host your first event, but you don’t know many people, a handy way is to post an open invite on your simblr, stating the occasion, the date, the dress code and also the deadline for RSVP and sending sims to you. This way people can send you a message and ask if they can attend (more on that later). Or, if you aren’t getting messages (which can happen if you’re new and people haven’t found your simblr yet), you can start reaching out to others. People in the community usually don’t mind in the slightest if they get an invite, especially if you do it in a nice way (starting with a hello and introducing yourself is usually a good one). If they can’t attend, they will let you know. In any case, don’t badger people if they can’t make it. There is a whole variety of reasons for people not to attend events, which have to do with timings, storylines and even just personal lives. Don’t take it personally, you can always ask them again later for another event.

Hosting the event

A few tips for hosting your event:

make sure you pose all your guests and take screenshots of them. I personally have a checklist to make sure I never accidentally forget someone

make sure you spell the names and titles correctly and when in doubt, send a message to the person who sent you the sim

post on the date agreed upon... if life happens and you have to postpone, let your guests know

tag the guests on your post... tumblr sometimes screws up the tags so double-check

if your collaboration involves dialogue with a visiting sim, make sure you okay the dialogue with the person whose sim it is

don’t change the visiting sims outfits without checking first

don’t change the visiting sims skintones or facial features... just don’t. If something isn’t working correctly in your game (that doesn’t mean your aesthetics!), send a message to the person who sent the sim and see how to fix it

if people are late sending in their sims, you can send them a reminder right before the deadline... often people may forget to send their sims. If they don’t send them at all after a reminder or two, it’s perfectly reasonable to cut them from the guestlist. 

Getting invited to events

Yay you have received a message inviting you to an event or a collab! Now you have to decide whether or not you will attend. If you won’t, it’s best to decline in a nice way, there is never a need to be rude. If you want, you can give them an explanation, but “thank you for the invite, I’m afraid I can’t make it this time” is always a good one. Now, if you will attend, write down the date and the deadline (if there isn’t one, ask). Check the dress code or ask if they haven’t given one. Dress and send your sims on time. Oh, and make sure you like and reblog the posts when they are up! It’s also nice to send a message after the event thanking them for hosting you and putting in all the hard work.

Now, if there were issues with the event, don’t be afraid to raise those privately with the person hosting the event. Often times those are accidental things, and can be cleared easily. Communication is key, and again, no need for rudeness.

Can I invite myself to an event?

If you see that someone’s sims just got engaged, it is safe to assume that there will be a wedding... however, until the wedding is announced through a public invite post, don’t reach out about the event, no matter how excited you would be to attend. Just like in real life, you don’t just invite yourself over. Same goes for state visits. If you would like to visit someone’s country, why not suggest a state visit to your country first? 

So, as a rule, only reach out about events that have public invites and even then, ask nicely if your sims can attend. Assuming makes things awkward.

An important note about sending your sims

In this community, we generally don’t mind CC, but nobody likes receiving 2GB files for one sim. Not everyone is running a high-end computer or has a great internet connection, so it’s polite to take this into consideration. Here are some tips:

Only send the outfits requested... the person organising the event doesn’t need your sims athletic wear and other outfits, no matter how nice they are. Put them in bathrobes and remove any CC make up & hairs and accessories from the not-required outfit categories

Don’t send mod tuning files... when using tray importer you can untick those

Don’t send default replacement files as these can mess up the hosts game

Don’t send merged files

So, in short... try to behave in the community like you would behave in the real world. Communication is key, and being polite and nice will always get you further than being rude!

Just adding this one more bit as I felt like I could’ve elaborated on it more... just like in the real world, being a part of a community is give-and-take. If you feel like you’re not getting invited to events, perhaps it’s good to check if you have been interacting enough with others. Really, a compliment to another simblr will cost you nothing. A nice message to brighten their day. Posting your story to fill the community with more great content... those are all great options for you. Or, host an event yourself! That’s a great way to get to know other simblrs.

Tumblr Etiquette Masterpost

Hi! Because I have (1) anxiety (2) been on tumblr for more than a decade, I have assumed the incredibly narcissistic position of making a post about how to interact with people on tumblr, since I think I’ve mastered the basic rules.

UPDATE: I started drafting this post a while ago. I'm not calling anyone out. I mostly made this because I realized I had a shocking number of followers who are new to tumblr.

In this post I’m covering Asks + Anons, Reblogging + Liking, Following, Tags, and ~Making Friends~.

TL;DR: tumblr etiquette is about social norms. These are the norms I have observed in my time here. You’re free to blog as you choose, but tumblr is a happier place when everybody is following the same guidelines.

Yes I use the words like “have to” or “rule” in this post. No, none of these are actual rules. Do what you want, but be prepared to face disgruntled users.

Let’s get started!

All About Following 

Rule #1: You do not have to follow anybody you don’t want to. You do not need to let someone follow you if you don’t want to.

Tumblr is technically a social media site. If you want to grow your social circle, follow your mutuals’ mutuals. The internet is like real life. You do a Group Hang, and then eventually you get to the one-on-one friendship. (Please refer back to Rule #1)

Some of your mutual-in-laws might feel slighted if you follow everyone except them. That’s okay. (Please refer back to Rule #1) You might feel slighted if you’re the one not being followed. That’s okay. (Please refer back to Rule #1)

Tumblr is technically a social media site, but it’s also a place to see the content you like, not just the people you like. You can be friendly with people you don’t follow, or who don’t follow you. Some users are amazing people who just post the wrong content. That’s okay.

If someone posts content you don’t like, unfollow them. If you don’t like someone’s personality, unfollow them. Don’t be an asshole, don’t hate-follow, and don’t stress yourself out.

Asks, Anons, Messages

I tried to organize my thoughts into paragraphs. I really did. But talking to people on tumblr is messy if you do it wrong, and I’m just going to bullet-point some etiquette guidelines.

Rule #1: You do not have to answer any messages you don’t want to.

Your 500 word message should not be the first time a user sees your name

.....Before you get Venting Privileges, a user should recognize you from the tags you leave on their posts, or the comments you leave on their fic, or the other shorter messages you’ve sent them, or from being mutual-in-laws, literally whatever. But it’s Not Cool to dump things on people who don’t even know you.

The anon button should be used in two scenarios only:

.....1, to send a positive message. Not neutral! Positive message, the kind of message you send with heart emojis.

.....2, if you don’t want to admit personal information about yourself. The Venting Privileges Rule still applies even if you’re on anon (ie: you can’t vent! Because they don’t recognize your username!) and “personal information” does not include unpopular opinions. I’m talking messages like “Saw your post about living in Houston, and I agree!”

.....(Okay, three scenarios: if someone specifically asks for anons for an ask game or something!)

If you don’t want it posted publicly, don’t send it over an ask. Send it as a DM. You can always kindly request that the recipient doesn’t publish it, but typical tumblr etiquette is that asks get published by default.

Personally, if I follow someone back I like to introduce myself! Many of these conversations end after the “hi” stage, and I never force friendship upon someone. But many of these conversations also work as ice breakers, and make it easier to send the second message, and the third. Don’t worry that you’re being rude if you don’t do this—it’s also totally normal to just keep blogging as usual!—but it’s helpful in making friends.

If you reblog an ask game from someone, it’s just common courtesy to send them an ask of your own.

Tags, Blacklists

Rule #1: You do not need to use any tags you don’t want to.

(Are you sensing a theme? But this one gets a...)

But, be prepared to face disgruntled followers over this.

Tags are useful in so many ways. They’re a great place to organize posts so you can find them more easily later on! They’re a great place to show off your personality! They’re a great (and quiet! More on this later) place to show appreciation for content creators.

They’re also so incredibly helpful for your followers to avoid content they don’t want to see. If you’re delving into a new fandom and are about to reblog twenty posts in a row, tag it. If you’re liveblogging a movie, tag it. If your post (especially your photo posts) contains any common phobias or unpleasant things (gore, spiders, etc) tag it. And if one of your followers asks you to tag certain content, even if you don’t really understand why? Tag it, or else expect to lose that follower.*

*This isn’t about your follower count, btw. This is about being a decent person.

On the other hand, use blacklists and filtering liberally! If a user does tag their content, you have no right to complain about their posting it. Just filter it.

Reblogs, Likes, Comments

Tumblr is a blogging site. It functions on reblogged posts. That’s just how it works. This is not one of those sites where you scroll for hours clicking the like button.

Here are what likes are for:

Showing support for someone’s personal posts

Showing appreciation for someone’s tags

Admiring content that doesn’t exactly align with your blog (different fandom, inappropriate, whatever.)

Saving a post to find later

Showing double the love!

Here is where likes are most disappointing:

The original fic, artwork, or edits of your fellow tumblr users, especially in your fandom

(If you’re someone who regularly reblogs things, I’m not talking to you. You’re allowed to simply “like” posts. I’m talking to those users in my notifications that, day after day, like 35 of my posts and reblog exactly 1 of them.

Just reblog shit.)

Also, remember how I said you can quietly show appreciation in the tags? Only comment directly on a post if you are sure you’re adding something worthy to the post. If you’re just saying “haha me too!” or “I remember this!” just leave it in the tags. (Reminder! You can do what you want! It’s your blog and I’m not the police! I’m just teaching you etiquette! And the polite thing to do is to leave personal commentary in the tags!)

Let’s recap:

Aaaaand: Making Friends

Start small. Introduce yourself after you have mutually followed each other.

Leave nice things in people’s tags. They notice.

Send ask game messages.

Show off more of your personality. This isn’t a one way street!

.....You can do this by, well, reblogging things. Also by tagging things. Also by just making original posts.

Do not go zero to one hundred. You wouldn’t sit next to someone in class and start talking about your trauma (even if you heard that they share your own!). So don’t do it online.

Like people’s vent posts, and their asks, and their tag games. Reply to them, too.

Honestly? Do more tag games! If someone says “anyone can do this and say I tagged you” take them up on the offer! Tag other people you want to get to know more.

Last but not least, you do not owe anyone anything on tumblr, and no one owes you anything. Ignore the rude message. Block the annoying tag. Follow the users you like even if they don’t follow you back. Do not tell people to post more of X. Do not tell them to post less of Y. Do not ask them why they don’t follow you.

It’s so much easier to press the unfollow button than to be a dick.
