Narrated by “Weird Al” Yankovic.
Written by Martin Daniel and Johan Von Sydow.
Directed by Johan Von Sydow.
Distributed by Juno Films. 75 minutes. Not Rated.
Tiny Tim is the type of strange-but-true eccentric talent that could only have really flourished in the 1960s. And not only flourish, for a white-hot period he became a cultural icon, mainly because he was so willfully different from anyone out there, so unrepentantly weird.
His comically falsetto ukulele version of the vaudeville-era chestnut “Tiptoe Through the Tulips” became a huge hit (and to this day is still considered something of a musical classic, if a rather odd one…) after Tiny Tim performed it on Laugh-In. His on-the-air marriage to his paramour “Miss Vicki” on Johnny Carson’s Tonight Show was at the time the second most-watched event in television history. (It was second only to the moon landing.)
Yet novelty acts like Tiny Tim are notoriously short-lived, and as bright as his peculiar star burned for a short time (about two years), it burnt out nearly as quickly. Even though he eventually was not exactly a shock and the world moved on to newer, even weirder acts, Tiny Tim was so determinedly offbeat that he was never really forgotten and was able to continue performing – though on a much smaller scale (sometimes an embarrassingly small scale) – for almost 30 years.
As Wavy Gravy, the mainstay of the hippie scene and head of the Hog Farm collective says in this documentary on the singer’s short and strange life, Tiny Tim was the type of act that you either just got, or you just didn’t.
Tiny Tim: King for a Day opens with a clip of Tiny Tim (born Herbert Khaury) doing a duet with himself on Sonny & Cher’s “I Got You Babe” in which he performs Cher’s lines in falsetto and Sonny’s lines in a normal singing voice. It’s an odd experience, and it also shows the juxtaposition of just being Tiny Tim, the two sides of his talent and his persona, an oddball split personality battling for superiority.
There was one thing that all sides of Tiny Tim agreed upon though. He craved the spotlight, to the point that it was almost an addiction. He even died on stage – the only place where he ever really felt comfortable – after disregarding his doctor’s orders that continuing performing would kill him.
He was so bracingly odd in the flower-power 60s that he became cool. After all, he stood out in a crowd, a very tall man named after a Dickens character with long, unkempt hair, a large nose and plaid outfits and neckties, playing Tin Pan Alley classics on a ukulele in a warbly falsetto.
Although his image was known for its edgy androgyny (at least edgy for the 1960s), while as a young man he questioned his sexuality, it appears that he was mostly very, very into girls. (And it seems, he was a tiny bit of a perv, though often more in thought than action.)
Even Tim recognized the falsetto vocals were odd. He called it his “sissy voice.” However, after several years of gaining no notice at all as a decent but unremarkable traditional vocalist, it was only when he changed things up radically – he says he was told by Jesus Christ to perform that way in a dream – that he gained attention in the dog-eat-dog world of show business.
Though he is mostly remembered for that voice – and it was his calling card – it belies the fact that not only did he have a quite decent baritone (as shown off on that “I Got You Babe” self-duet), but he also had an encyclopedic knowledge of music, and a great love of the music of 1890-1930.
Yeah, Tiny Tim was a bit of a joke character – and Herbert Khaury was in on the joke – but he was also a natural, a smart and talented showman. And yes, he was just a bit crazy, but he incorporated his eccentricity into his act.
Sadly, the world only tuned in and turned on to Tiny Tim for a short time. About a decade after his superstardom, he was broke, and living in his mother’s apartment in the Bronx – right where he started out. (Though it is not really explored in the film, Tim’s naivete led to him being swindled by his business managers.)
He took a series of oddball jobs – including being the ringmaster of a circus, doing oddball covers of more current hits like “Staying Alive” and “Do Ya Think I’m Sexy,” starring in a cheesy horror film, guesting on The Howard Stern Show and even as the host of a short-lived kids’ show called Tiny Tim & Friends that was a pretty blatant rip-off of PeeWee’s Playhouse. (Sadly, King for a Day does not share any footage of this oddball career turn, but it is available on YouTube). He even did an album called Rock which was a bunch of hair metal cover songs.
He kept going long after most people would have given up, and for smaller and smaller audiences. Tiny Tim was mostly famous for being shocking and strange. You can only do that for so long before the world catches up with you.
But as King for a Day reminds us, he sure as hell had a fascinating, conflicted life.

In honor of watching Z-o-m-b-i-e-s 2, I’m giving a bit of review of my favorite and not so favorite Disney Channel Musicals, because why not.
Please do note that these are sarcastic as heck and that I do actually enjoy these movies. For the most part, they’re popcorn movies and fun to watch.
High School Musical
With Four movies (and a sort of tv series), I think this is the most profitable saga in the whole channel.
The first one: Fun music, cliché as heck, and really dark when you start to think about it too much. I like the fact that Sharpay is not your typical villain, and Ashely Tisdale portrayal actually makes her more sympathetic than some of the “heroes”… yeah, I’m talking about Chad, who is a total douchebag, and Taylor, who is a complete tool.
Sharpay (And Ryan’s) crimes? Talking with Mrs. Darbus about changing the date of the callbacks. They didn’t even lie to do this, they just outright said it was highly suspicious that someone who had never shown any interest was now all over it. Mrs. Darbus agreed. She also “introduced” Gabriella to Taylor. Her only real dick move was talking down Kelsi.
Chad and Taylor? They lie and manipulate their supposed friends. Taylor even only became friends with Gabriella when she thought she could get something out of her.
Then the Decathlon team and the basketball team proceed to cheat on their respective competitions so Troy and Gabriella can show up to callbacks!
ANYWAY. I still know the songs by heart (And Sharpay’s and Ryan repertoire are the most awesome of them all)
The second one: I loved it, but it really has a weird message… the first one is all “BE YOURSELF”, while this one is all “SUCCUMB TO PEER PRESSURE”. To recap: Troy is sure his parents can’t afford to get him into a good college, so he agrees to suck up to Sharpay and get a job at a resort where her parents are really powerful. He even manages to get ALL of his friends jobs! (Except Kelsi and Gabriella, who already had jobs there. Sharpay even was the one who told Kelsi about the opening at the club). The first thing they do, literally not even five minutes into the job is to bitch and moan and complain about how hard it is. Sharpay uses her influences to promote Troy and introduce him to a professional team who are sincerely impressed with this boy. How do his “friends” react? Of course they support him and are happy he will have this once in a lifetime opportunity!
Ha! Nope. They are jealous of him, especially Chad, and bitch and moan and guilt trip him until he falls to peer pressure and ditches every single advantage he got after Gabriella also dumps him for being sexually harassed by Sharpay. (I’m exaggerating a bit, but seriously, poor Troy)
I also want to point out that for some reason people like to ship Ryan with Chad due to them sharing a song here and switching their hats shirt/jersey, despite Ryan being visibly scared of Chad on the first one, and they don’t even interacting once in the following.
Also I find it hilarious when Troy is jealous of Gabriella talking with Ryan.
The music is on par of the first one, and I know most of them by heart too! Again, Sharpay and Ryan’s numbers kick ass, even the weird HumuhumunukukuA’pua’a
The third one: Honestly my least favorite of the saga. Gabriella dumps Troy for the third time, ghost him and decides that her future is more important (Y’know… the things she dumped Troy for in the second movie) and once again Troy has to fight tooth and nail to get together with her again. I bet Gabriella is dumping him again as you read this.
Some songs are good, but they’re honestly confusing, “I want it all” is a fantasy sequence the first time, but the second time is Ryan’s number in the Musical. “Who’s that girl” was about Kelsi in the rehearsals, but about Sharpay in the actual musical.
The movie do have it’s sweet moments, like Ryan and Kelsi bonding (Who totally are each other’s beards), Sharpay being outsmarted and then deciding to be the baddest bitch. Chad and Taylor being practically background characters in this one…
Sharpay’s Fabulous Adventure: Awesome and well deserved spin off. Ashely Tisdaly performance as Sharpay is one of the things that really made High School Musical stand out. The music is good, the plot is okay-ish. I don’t remember much of the new characters, but Peyton was good for Sharpay’s character development, even if he is sort of a satellite character.
Camp Rock
The music of both movies is very good, and the first one is okay, but coming right after High School Musical, it felt like a rip off. The music in both is awesome tho.
I barely remember the names of the characters, and the Alpha Bitch character is very… poorly thought off? She’s a mean bitch with some talent, but, like, everyone in that Camp is talented, and is pretty obvious that her mom doesn’t care about her that much, so why bother trying to suck up to her?
The Camp guide… counselor guy is also clearly biased favoring her, yet he knows what kind of a bitch she is, which makes absolute zero sense. Sure, she could complain to her mom about it, but Camp Rock is supposedly super exclusive and famous already. Her blaming the food fight on the protagonist and the other girl was somewhat believable due to how the question of who started it was asked, but her accusing protagonist girl of stealing a bracelet and then hiding it in an extremely obvious open to everyone place. It feels like he actually hates the protagonist.
The second one is even weirder. Camp Rock as THE most famous camp ever in the story of anything, and now we are supposed to believe is an underdog camp who struggles to get by. The antagonist of the previous movie, who was supposed to have learned her lesson switches to the new Camp Star, who is now the most awesome camp in the story of ever, despite being literally new and unknown. Also the protagonist somehow manages to bet the camp away, despite being in no way associated with the owner. And they don’t mentioning it in the original bet… And then they win not through talent and hard work, but for a technicality.
Yay?
Teen Beach Movie
The first one is awesome and fun to watch. The fish out of water, and the culture whiplash is educative, progressive, and presented in a fun and relatable way (“Like Me”, about the different expectations boys and girls have in both eras) and “Can’t stop singing” is just hilarious. Garret Clayton is just hilarious as Tanner.
The second one has fun moments (“Twist your frown upside down”) but… well, I like it a lot less than the first one. They retcon and change lots of things established, or at least hinted in the first movie. The first one establishes the rules of the musical, and the characters go along with those, while the second one throws those rules and makes it a traditional musical, which makes no sense. The first movie heavily hints that Brady and Mack has been together for some time, and that they meet due to Brady working with Mack’s grandpa… in the second one the grandpa is nowhere to be seen, and now they meet on their own, they had been dating only for that summer and “Wet Side Story” is both their favorite movie, when in the first movie it was said to be Brady’s and Mack’s Grandpa’s favorite movie, and Mack barely knew about it. The first one also threats the main characters equally, while here, Tanner could disappear from the main plot and it would not make a difference.. The second movie is very feminist, which is not bad in itself, but also is very anti-male in the process, which… well, nope. In the first movie they were both Tanner and Lela were portrayed as slightly ditzy, brainless beauties, but in this one, Tanner is an outright dumbass, and Lela a freaking genius (Even understanding calculus on her first try).Brady also takes a level on jerkass and is dumber, while in the first one he was more capable and reliable. And then the ends happens and the movie in universe goes from “Wet Side Story” to “Lela Queen of the Beach”, which sounds incredibly narcissistic and self-centered on Lela’s part… not to mention in the video we are shown Tanner is, again, portrayed as an idiot instead of Lela’s love interest.
Descendants
Do I think the premise is a cash grab? Abso-fucking-lutely? Do I still enjoy every bit of them? HELL YES.
They’re popcorn movies, the First one even has Kristin Chenoweth, which is always a good thing. There are horrifying implications like in Ever After High (Which I have no idea which was “first”, since EAH came first, but there were plans for this long before EAH came into being)
ANYWAY, the plot of the first one is solid, although I honestly think making them animated would have made them a lot more enjoyable. The characters are relatable and sympathetic, even if they’re trying to prove they’re “bad”, it all comes to them being super afraid of their parents. Audrey is a major asshole tho, I have no idea why many people “stan” her, when she’s a horrible person. Chad is also bad, but to be fair, his speech at Family day was only truths, he didn’t even had anything to say against Carlos. “You can do different than your parents” is always a good lesson. Even if that technically applies to Audrey being an evil bitch by choice too.
The second is a bit iffier, with Mal essentially succumbing to the pressure of essentially being seen as the Future Queen, when she has had barely any time to process being good. Also they gave Lonnie a huge role and that also was cool as hell (Even if stupid Hasbro didn’t make a doll of her). Her ship teasing with Jay I could do without. Jane/Carlos was adorable though. I also hate Uma and how people compare her to Mal, especially Ben. Mal was afraid of Maleficent and wanted to prove herself worthy. Uma did all what she did for herself and herself alone. (This does change in the third movie, but still)
Third one felt rushed as hell. I liked the big reveal of Mal being Hades’ daughter, and I liked Hades. I didn’t liked how they replaced Freddie from the Wicked World shorts for Celia (They could have used the same character FFS!) I really liked Freddie character. She blended well with the other VKs, and somehow managed to become close (And I would dare to say BFF) with Jane… anyway, onto the movie. Audrey is a bitch, she’s completely evil and unrepentant, and the final solution is to break the barrier? … what… I would argue that getting the children should have been a priority and then slowly get the adults out. And the main 4 never encountered their parents again…
I dislike that Lonnie was not there in the third movie, but they compensated that with the bromance between Jay and Gil… like, if Lonnie needed to be out for that bromance to bloom, I’m ok with that. (Seriously, Ben and Mal end up practically engaged, Evie got proof that her thing with Doug was True Love, and Carlos has a budding romance with Jane, Uma/Harry is pretty much also a couple… Jay essentially ends up with Gil as his “pair the spares” partner. )
Z-O-M-B-I-E-S
It was a good movie, even if the message is a little awkward if you try to apply to the real world. Not that “don’t be racist douchebag” is wrong, but when you portray your minority as a literal race of monsters that eat brains and need the other race to be able to function (The Z bands) yeah…
Anyway, the music is very cool (BAMM is totally my jam) and the Addison / Zed is not as jarring as other examples (They are a lot more healthy than Troy/Gabriela, for example)
I might be gay-biased, but while it is obvious that Bucky is jealous of Zed getting attention, at times he seems jealous of Addison being with Zed.
The make up and characterization of the zombies is also… well, bad. They look like discount Jokers. They could have done something really fun and give each character a different hair color, or at least different shades of green.
In the second… well, they handled “political issues” WAY better than Teen Beach Movie. They didn’t sacrifice characters for this, their attitudes do fit with what they did in the first one. It is a bit annoying that they undo the happy ending of the first one and that Bucky and the ‘Aceys are still racist assholes… actually, the aceys seem to be even MORE assholish than they were in the first movie. And that’s without saying they replaced one of them. Bree is has less screen time than in the first movie, but at least her shiptease with Bonzo did result in them being together (They’re cute!)
I will also admit I kinda disliked this because the Toy Fair showed the toys and the main werewolf girl was basically a human Clawdeen Wolf (Literally… you can see some comparisons) but the actual character doesn’t look that much like Clawdeen, so no idea why they went that route for the doll.
Addison’s hair looks platinum blonde instead of the white it looked in the first movie. The make up of the zombies is just as bad as the first one. There are scenes in which Zed doesn’t look to have make up.
Addison is not a werewolf, but the prophecy about the “Great Alpha” only shows someone with long white hair… I don’t think it’s mentioned she is a werewolf… and Addison does fulfill said prophecy
There is a scene were Addison is interacting with the only important of the guy Werewolves, Wyatt, and Zed is watching them and gets very jealous… and I couldn’t help but be reminded of the HSM2 scene with Troy being jealous of Ryan… and then at the end Wyatt compliments Bonzo… so yeah.
I liked the werewolves more than the cheerleaders. Wyatt is totally my favorite, and I actually laughed when Zoey gave scritches to the other girl and she ended up enjoying it haha.
Also, Addison is totally and alien.
Or a fairy.
Honorably Mentions:
Lemonade Mouth. This is one of the most boring movies I have seen. I didn’t remember this one until I did a search for the DCOM movies in case I missed one and here it is.
Lizzie Maguire: Not a musical per se, but it did have music in it. Other than the male friend falling hard for the female friend, this is very enjoyable.
The Cheetah Girls. A shame that internal fighting left this saga kind of incomplete. They’re fun movies. Raven-Symone is an awesome singer and actress.
-
In order of my enjoyment, I would say they are
1. High School Musical
2. Descendants
3. Teen Beach Movie
4. High School Musical 2
5. Sharpay’s Fabulous Adventure
6. Descendants 2
7. Z-O-M-B-I-E-S
8. High School Musical 3
9. Descendants 3
10. Camp Rock
11. Z-O-M-B-I-E-S 2
12. Teen Beach Movie 2
13. Camp Rock 2
Like I said, they all have mostly awesome songs, and are good popcorn movies, so don’t try to look too deep into them.

rare first impressions review
a “first impressions” review instead of a straight up review since my opinions will def change over time
RARE:
i’ve been listening to the demo for over a year and it’s so cool to see how different it sounds w her voice
“burning toast in the toaster” is such an offbeat lyric. almost jarring in its banality, i love it
the glo up from revival to this....... going from wondering “maybe i should be more like her” in perfect to shouting “i’m not gonna beg for you, i’m not gonna let you make me cry, not getting enough from you, didn’t you know i’m hard to find?” we love a liberated queen so much
this is super fun and great but i played the shit out of the demo in 2018 which makes it feel a lil less exciting. i should have waited rip. still love it tho.
9/10
DANCE AGAIN:
“confidence is throwing your heart through every brick wall”
this is so different?????? love to see experimentation, not my fav sound she’s ever tried out i don’t think, but i do like it, v fun
“all the trauma’s in remission” (trauma or drama????? idk)
sounds very starboy inspired at times, at least abelena gave us this
“vulnerable ain’t easy, believe me, but i go there”
actually, almost a return to stars dance at moments???? in a way more mature, fully realized way... which is so cool when the whole theme of the album and its imagery seems to be looking back at your past self and celebrating yourself for overcoming so much, and also, like she said taylor told her, reclaiming the happiness that has been taken from you and letting yourself return to a happier version of yourself, the truest version of yourself that wasn’t being pulled down and abused. like stars dance was her big dance edm record and i know it’s not a celebrated work of hers lol but there is so much beauty in making a song that says “feels so good to dance again” and going back to that sound for 1 song, remembering what it’s like to feel light, to just dance.
(adding this after my second listen: WAY better with a second listen)
7.5/10
LOOK AT HER NOW:
a forever bop
we love her
“of course she was sad but now she’s glad, she dodged a bullet, took a few years to soak up the tears but look at her now watch her go”
8.5/10
LOSE YOU TO LOVE ME:
yes yes yes yes yes yes
we stan forever
“this dancing was killing me softly, i needed to hate you to love me”
absolutely the rawest, most vulnerable track in her discography, which is saying a lot
“in 2 months you replaced us like it was easy, made me think i deserved it in the thick of healing”
i think what i love so much about this era, about the things that she’s saying in interviews, about the messages she’s sharing in these lyrics so far, is like... not apologizing to her abuser, not making excuses for him, not letting his actions destroy her confidence. comparing the lyrics of revival to this, it’s so clear that there’s been such a change in mentality, such a maturing process, that revival was very much still in the midst of it all and that it’s finally over now. no “i’ll always have love for him,” no “everything happens for a reason,” no “i miss you,” no “what did i do wrong?” there is SO much strength in saying “actually, you know what i really didn’t deserve that and i do not love you anymore and losing you is the best thing that ever happened to me” and simply leaving it at that. forgiveness and love is NOT always essential to moving on!! sometimes that chronic forgiveness is just detrimental and the best thing u can do for yourself is say “FUCK YOU” and leave.
10/10
RING:
“i’m one in a billion baby, don’t you agree?”
this sounds SOOOOOOOOOOOO FUCKING GOOOOOOODDDDDD
nothing else to say like...... period.......
100000/10
VULNERABLE:
“wrap your arms around my weakness”
this is not at all what i expected and is so good
saw everyone saying this is delicate’s sister and it’s so true
the strength and beauty in being completely devastated by a person and still being like... i won’t let it make me cold....... :(
9/10
PEOPLE YOU KNOW:
now this is camouflage’s sister. i love that nostalgia is at the core of so many of selena’s songs like wow she’s truly a cancer huh...... the pain of growing up and becoming a different person and knowing you need to let go of a person that you experienced so much with in such formative years but letting go of them feels like not only letting go of the good memories but letting go of the self that you were when they loved you, when things were good...... ugh
“i never know when enough is enough” hit me right in the heart
this sounds so good... incorporating the edm sound that she experimented with in the droplets but not going all the way there, just kind of letting it exist in that in between....... love
10/10
LET ME GET ME:
“me and this spiral are done, burn this camouflage i’ve been wearing for months, tryna let a little happy in for once” BEAUTIFUL
“take that tired heart and go and turn it inside out” wow.....
this is so sexy and empowering
noticing ur tendency to self-sabotage and overthink and be toxic towards urself..... when ur so used to toxicity and pain that u forget what it’s like to live without it...... but then breaking that pattern and letting urself just LIVE for a moment......
i’m still thinking about “me and this spiral are done, burn this camouflage i’ve been wearing for months” like wtfffffff
it’s like a self-aware, realistic me & my girls lol
i didn’t expect to like this one tbh bc it kinda faded into the background of the tracklist and i forgot it existed, but she snapped
9/10
CROWDED ROOM:
her voice sounds so cute and suits this sound so well
“yeah i was afraid but you made it safe, i guess that is our combination, said you feel lost, well so do i” SOFFFFTTTTT.... TENDERRRRRR
again, honestly didn’t expect to totally love this one but I LOVE THIS ONE!!!!!!
“the world keeps on spinning but i ain’t dizzy yet”
this 6lack feature fits well and is a great addition, his voice really suits the song
1000/10
KINDA CRAZY:
an original sg2 track we stan
“but slowly all the sugar, it went to waste” :(
say my name vibes in the chorus lyrics. love!
“you’ve been lyin just for fun, luckily no damage done” LOVE!
“now you’re treatin me like i’m insane... YOU’RE insane!” SNAPPPPPEDDDDD OMG..... YESSSS BITCHHHH
oh my god the snippet that we’ve been listening to for 3 years lol
this is...... STELLARRRRRR BITCH!!!!!
10/10
FUN:
“my kind of trouble likes your trouble too”
the sigh before the chorus!!!!
I LOVEEEE THIS
“you get me higher than my medication” we-
this is rare’s hands to myself tbh
this chorus is so good
9.5/10
CUT YOU OFF:
i was most excited for this one!!! based off the snippets she shared in the trailer
“gotta chop chop all the extra weight, been carrying you for fourteen hundred sixty days, gotta gotta gotta clean my slate” OOOOOOOF
“HOW COULD I CONFUSE THAT SHIT FOR LOVE” AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
this chorus is EXACTLY my vibe tbh this song was made for me lmao
“i imagine all the endless places i could know with a drop drop and i’ll let you go, all the possibilities i got from head to toe, yeah they’d yeah they’d yeah they’d start to show” WHEW BITCH!!!!!!! realizing this dead fucking weight is holding you down... realizing you will be FREE you will be GOOD you will be HAPPY without him. the way that dropping him will be liberating and will open up the whole world for you!!! AHHH! LOVE YOURSELF FIRST!!!!
this guitar solo, ABSOLUTE chef’s kiss! selena GETS me!
10000000/10 YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES
A SWEETER PLACE:
“red lips french kiss my worries all away” ummmmmmm *billy eichner voice* GO LESBIANS LET’S GO HERE WE GO LESBIANS HERE WE GO LESBIANS COME ON
“felt what real is like” 🥺
“I CAN’T BELIEVE I CAN BE LOUD, HOLDING HANDS WITH THE DARKNESS AND KNOWING MY HEART IS ALLOWED” THE BEST LYRIC IN HER DISCOGRAPHY THIS IS BEAUTIFUL
tbh i don’t really love the chorus except for the “oo-oo-oo-oo” part at the end but it works with the song and is something i’ll love with time
kid cudi’s verse really adds to the song, i’m glad the features are used to add to the song rather than just being thrown in out of nowhere
8.5/10
#selena gomez#rare#yall don't have to read this i just had to put my thoughts somewhere and i like to write these and look back at them later

Yo you should answer all of these scene questions👀👀
:OOO
you think so lad???? shit dawg i was thinkin just a few at a time but if that what u want my dear nonnie i will supply
1. wats ur scene name?
i was thinkin maybe ‘gods mistake’ would be a good one but then. i found a way to make it both danganronpa related, and, even better, a fucking pun as well. ‘kamukura kamukura jasqueen’, or just ‘kamukura jasqueen’ for short is good k thxxx
2. describe ur dream outfit!
oooo gosh this ones trickyy!! there are so many good outfits out there, especially in the scene community!! but it’d have to have a few tiny elements of dr cosplay to add a lil of my dangan-weeb culture in there ofc! more specifically, id really love to get one of kazuichis jumpsuit and just wig out and add shit like this just because i could:

(id just rlly love going out in all those glowy/shiny things at night like all that haha..and yes the shoes would probably kill me/my fuckin feet if i tried to walk in them but shut up i love them theyre cute as fuck)
3. describe ur dream haircut!
oo another tricky one!! i do like my regular hair, and honestly id be lying if i said i didnt love ibuki’s hairdo too but id defs have to go with something like this!!

yaaaassss, so pretty and spikeeeey! maybe id dye my natural hair colour black and/or add some funky colours if i ever actually got this style down!
4. describe ur dream room!
i have a lot of ideas for dream bedrooms actually, but heres a visual image of one of them i found!!!

MIKU ROOM MIKU ROOM MIKU ROOM MIKU ROOM
(this specific idea arose mainly just for the aesthetic but i also find it super cute and a good environment to be in general hhhnnggg)
5. if u could make anything out of kandi, wat would u make?
oh you mean those colourful beads and bracelet things??? i love those man!!! theyre so visually appealing to me aaaaa…id probably just make a fuck-ton of those and most probably use the little letter beads to say random words/phrases like ‘aubergine’ and ‘despacito’ knowing my shitposter self lmaooo! id definitely make a sansmaeda themed one too thoo fr
6. wat would u write on ur shoez?
it’d probably range from things like a simple kaomoji doodle to something randum and stupid like ‘seesaw’ bc yes asjnd
7. wat kinda piercingz/tattooz do u hav/want?
i dont think i rlly want any real piercings (at least not atm) but id totally go for those fake stick-on gemstone lookin’ ones! and as for tattoos, i cant rlly see myself gettin one of those rn either, but id want something like a mario power-up, preferably the bell one/cat suit powerup!!! its my favorite powerup and its sooo cute!!!
8. fave genrez?
i dont rlly have a specific genre, i like most kinds of music, but i rlly like energetic music that i can dance tooo!!! >w<

Movie meeeehm
Thanks to @nitrateglow for these!
1: A movie you enjoyed as a kid that you don't now
-Probs some comedy I'd find awfully sexist/racist/homophobic etc. now. But of course, I can't recall a specific one, probs because the experience is so deeply squicky and traumatic. Oh, wait, I know. I adored The Great Mouse Detective as a kid, but have heard so many "bleh" comments about it later that I don't want to ruin it by rewatching it as an adult. Why take a happy, cherished, pure and joyous memory away, especially as there are so few of those in my life anyway in proportion to the bad memories?
2: A movie you disliked as a kid that you like/love now
-Not a movie, but I was literally too fucking terrified to watch Doctor Who as a kid on cable, because the Tom Baker repeats they were showing terrified me with the title sequence alone. That empty stare and howling, diddly-duming music were enough to give me nightmares. So I only got into Who in my late teens!
3: Your favorite movie as a kid
-Define "kid." I went through several. I loved the Disney Robin Hood, of course, and at puberty, Wayne's World (yes) and The Princess Bride were my own cult movies, before I had anyone to fangirl them with. Ah, the pre-Internet era.
4: An actor/actress it took you time to warm up to
I remember being weirdly terrified and disturbed by Jeremy Brett as a kid, but then I felt the same about Bowie, and... well. Clearly it was my baby self not knowing WTF to do with all this stirring, restless energy that later turned out to be my skinnyandrogynousbisexualguy orientation thingy. And while I'd first seen Caligari and Casablanca as a teen in the early 90s, I wasn't ready for Connie until he pounced me in 2012. I would not have "got" him the same way and as hard until I was a grown-up, with a wide variety of experiences from many areas of life and a boatload of books/learning behind me. Just... no way.
5: A director it took you time to warm up to
-If anything, I've cooled off various directors I was impressed by when younger. So much of the auteur stuff gets wanky and self-imposing, in this Arrogant Artist Guy "look at my GENIUS big VISION and also insecurity about my penis size" kind of way. I like directors who can be warm and have fun and who show some real humanity (not wanky anvilly/kitchen sink-y sort of "humanity" either). Maybe Branagh? I found him a bit annoying as a kid, but now fap all over his stuff because now I'm old enough to Get It. He is the best kind of fanboy director; his geekiness is catching. Listening to his Thor commentary was a real eye-opener into my realising just how massive a nerd he is, and in a good, "one of us" kind of way.
6: Top five favorite soundtracks of your favorite movie composer
-There isn't just one! But Clint Mansell and Debbie Wiseman turn to gold everything they touch. Debbie especially is hugely unknown still, but she has this most amazing, swellingly Romantic music full of sweeping emotion that I just can't rec her enough. Do check her out; she'll give you goosebumps.
7: Three movies that defined your teen/childhood years
-I think I mentioned those already! But as a teenager, Bram Stoker's Dracula, La Reine Margot and Heavenly Creatures were formative. There were others I obsessed about way more than those, but they weren't as influential--it's more like they were massaging buttons I already had.
8: Sci-fi or westerns?
-Blake's 7! AKA "The Dirty Dozen in Space."
9: Are there any movies you own more than one copy of?
-Ahhahaha. AAAHHAHAHAHA! Of The Thief of Bagdad, I own: The Criterion clusterfuck with the awful clumsy cover someone had their 5-year-old draw, the Nordic DVD, the German Blu-Ray because I live on the edge (what with those Veidt Eye Closeups in HD being a hazard to any uterus) and at least three different digital copies. Because I'm me. I also own two digital copies and one DVD of Casablanca, three digital and one DVD of A Woman's Face and don't get me started on the British telefantasy I have on both DVD and VHS. I have spare copies of both the Caligari Masters of Cinema release and the ITV DVD of The Spy In Black, so I guess I should throw them at somebody.
10: Physical media or streaming?
-Neither. Video files firmly saved onto and run from my hard drive. Fuck streaming with its choppiness (ruins the viewing experience for me) and physical media are usually beyond my budget (unless I save up for a Connie DVD). Besides, I rip my favourite movie discs onto my HD anyway. I want to be able to gif that shit, dammit!
11: Are there any movies you watch on special occasions every year (Christmas, Halloween, birthdays, your mother's aunt's wedding anniversary, etc.)
-Used to do Nightmare Before Christmas on Halloween, but not any more. I still attempt ToB every Christmas. And I used to do All Through The Night with wine on my birthday, but as I can't tolerate alcohol anymore, the experience of Watching ATTN Drunk is no more. Someone start a Halloween tradition with me where we watch either The Student of Prague or Eerie Tales (or both) every year?
12: What movie do you most associate with your best friend(s)?
-Gosh, so few have stayed, so it's more like "movie that reminds you of a broken friendship," yay...?! I've learned to try and not associate movies with people that way any more, because it's more painful than it's worth. Connie is my best friend. He's like Krishna that way.
13: Name a movie adaptation you thought was better than or equal to its source material.
-LOTR put in more facial features and characterisation than Tolkien ever did, and did the tales far less fucking tediously. Imagine if you'd had to sit and watch hobbits walking through the countryside for 6 hours with barely anything happening?! Yeah...
14: What genres do your favorite movies tend to be?
-Historical, fantasy, Gothic Romantic, just Romantic stuff on the whole. More old than new movies these days. Why watch shitty modern chick flicks when I have far better characterisation and far less narrowly defined female lives in old-timey "women's pictures?" And guys who actually fucking shaved, dressed in clothes that were tailored for them instead of rented and saggy, whose bodily expressions weren't frozen for fear of "fagginess," and who weren't pumped full of 'roids.
15: Are you a fan of period dramas and if so, what era do you enjoy best?
-Yes. I love me some costume dramas, but I am seriously picky about them--most post-90s ones have been fucking awful and tend to feature shitty costumes and unkempt hair that would've sent real historical people to Bedlam, wobblycam from hell, vomit-inducingly excessive modernisation to be "edgy", and that one painfully skeletal bint they shove into every period drama ever these days, so it's... slim pickings for a history nerd, these days. There aren't many good ones set in the 17th century/Baroque era, which I love the most: the two Baroque dramas I wholeheartedly love are both series. (The Devil's Whore and By The Sword Divided.) The Angeliques and Musketeer adaptations are riddled with flaws, but there are some glowing bits within. As for The Golden Age of Islam... bloody hell, there really aren't that many good ones out there, are there?! ToB and Jodhaa Akbar and Disney's Aladdin, obviously. La Reine Margot isn't "my" period but it's great, as is Dangerous Liaisons (also not my period)--those are so fucking perfect. And the Connie period dramas, well... I think of them as primarily "silent movies" or "old movies," actually. Of those, The Student of Prague, ToB and The Wandering Jew are the best "costume" ones, IMHO. (I'd probs enjoy Lucrezia Borgia and Carlos and Elisabeth way more, were the copies we have not so smudgy.)
16: Name a movie you love that you would recommend to just about everyone.
-Ah, but we know there are always cynical cunts out there who'd give even Casablanca two stars, so what's the point? I'd still recommend it, though. And The Lion King, I guess.
17: Name a movie you love that you consider an acquired taste.
-Honestly, I'm thinking of telly rather than movies again. You will pry my cherished copy of The Time Monster from my cold, dead hands. Does The Devil of Winterborne count as a movie or TV? That's how far back my love for Mark Gatiss goes. Um... Don't Be A Menace To South Central While Drinking Your Juice In The Hood makes me fucking cry with laughter (the comedic timing is what does it. *beat* "Ain't dat some shit!"). Of Connie's oeuvre, yes, I know Bella Donna is rubbish, but Connie and Mary are SIZZLING and horny and juicy and it's Valid as a BDSM porn movie. And the novel is actually good.
18: Name a film you like directed by/starring a filmmaker/actor you normally don't care for.
-Not so much actor/director, but I did *not* expect to love Thor as much as I did, because I expected a dumb popcorn movie but got great adventure cinema with a touch of Shakespeare instead. I really am not the right audience for regular Marvel features at all, before or after. Fuck Marvel up its dumb macho Republican ass. But Thor is fucking beautiful and operatic and poetic and majestic and Pagan and shit. Branagh knows what I like.
19: Name a movie that blew your mind.
-A Woman's Face (1941). Because. Holy. Fuck. How can I keep on finding yet more details in it six years after first watching it, having watched it countless times by now?! And obvs all the other stuff, like the shockingly good female POV, amazing and complex woman protagonist, amazing writing, amazing ensemble cast, amazing direction, amazing lighting, amazing evil Torsten Slinkypussy Barring and The. Goddamn. Attic. Scene.
20: What genre mash-up would you most love to see that either hasn't been done yet or hasn't been done enough?
-Feminist-savvy historical romance with fantasy elements and hot explicit sex that's not shit. Basically, like the stuff you see in my fics, but better paced and woven into coherent adventure movies.
21: The coolest movie you've ever seen
-Too, too many. But Bogie was the coolest. And Claude Rains had the best acting skills. And Conrad Veidt was Conrad motherfucking Veidt. So what with those three mountains of coolness all converging under the Moroccan sky, I'm sure it's safe to say "Casablanca."
#movies#personal#meme#i am leaving out tons i know#but i must attempt sleep nao#i was quoting don't be a menace to myself just yesterday ffs#every time there's an anvilly Point in a movie#i keep screaming 'mmESSAGE!'

Hello After the release of the PQ2 trailers, I would like to know why you like Minako / Hamuko so much?I do not understand why a lot of people like it and I do not say that in a way that bothered me, I just do not understand.
Before I can get to her, I need to give a backstory on my relationship with P3. And really just a summary of how I got into Persona in general. But yeah, in this literal essay I will (attempt to muddily, and kinda all over the place) explain how I fell in love with a character I was 100% neutral on, on a game I had a rocky relationship to begin with, and how she actually made me appreciate both that said game AND the MaleMC (who I also had a rocky relationship on) more and more as the years went by.
I should note I played the Persona games in this order: P4 (PS2, newly released), then P3FES, then Persona 1 PSP (didn’t finish tho), then P3P (and basically from the P1PSP on I roughly played them in order of release as we got them, so yeah....the thing to note is I played P4 first, then the original male P3 then years later I played the FeMC, so I did not experience her first).
Now I REALLY loved P4 when I played it, colorful cast, really loved their hijinx and chemistry, and the shadow Selves were just so much fun and dark. I thought the plot was fine, not god’s gift to this earth but it was fun. I found the characters and setting to be the biggest draw (I mean P4 is character focused not plot/story focused so that makes sense). I researched the series and found P3FES. People said it was a lot better than P4, I wanted to try and get P1/2 but.....yeah the only versions were PS1 and they were expensive, and I am but a freshman in high school with no job (too busy being an athlete and studying) and am lucky if I can beg my parents to let me get these games. And there was no way in hell I was getting P1/2EP which were both like $100 (I had to beg for P3/4 which were like $30 each).
Anyway I got my hands on P3 and......I....really didn’t like it. I liked the music, the setting, the style, and I was fine with the slightly harder combat cause of the AI (I accidentally played through all of Kanji’s dungeon with AI on not knowing I could change). But.....I didn’t like the characters. I got to Fuuka’s full moon before I had to put it down. I thought Junpei and Yukari were too mean, I hated I couldn’t SL with anyone on my team yet, Mitsuru/Akihiko were too distant, and the SLs i could SL were.....not really that great, and the MC was....really dull....like he was mostly neutral or silent (as opposed to Souji being funny, rude, neutral, silent, caring and a lot of interesting things with his dialogue options), sometimes he’d have a harsh but funny line but of course if I chose that I’d get a reverse link so that sucks. I decided to replay P4 again, trying to find what it was that really drew me to the series. By the end of that second playthrough I decided to pick up P3 again, give it a second chance (even tho Junpei and Yukari almost killed it for me).
I powered through, got into a rhythm, opened up more interesting links (such as the bookstore people and Maiko). It still wasn’t as good as P4 imo, the feel was different, but it was more I felt the cast was too distant and ridged to the plot. It wasn’t that they were there own people with their own arcs, but that I ironically didn’t find them as fleshed out as P4′s (which was more character focused so maybe that explains it). But then I got to Aigis, and the plot really picked up (years later I find that’s where some people felt like P3 started getting good). And I ended up liking it! I didn’t love it as much as P4 (and I had a lot of issues with the way they handled how the P3 kids got closer, aka I feel like they it could’ve been better), but I did like it and appreciated it despite my rocky start. I should also note I did like Shinji, like “Oh neat design” and then when he died I was like “Oh welp that sucks” but I never blamed Ken, and I wasn’t a rabbid fan shipping girl for him (I did jump on the FeMCxShinji train for a ship tho, just cause I saw other people like it and I prefered it the most out of the other options at the time, but actually FeMCxTheo was my first ship for her XD)
Then P3P was announced. Me who had a PSP for P1 and KHBBS was like “Oh ok cool.” Then I saw there was a femaleMC and I saw the opening (cause iirc they announced it with an opening) and I was like “OH no this is horrible, I can’t believe they’re making Yukari an MC!” but then I looked at it again and realized it was some new character and was like “oh phew thank god, huh I wonder how you’re gonna be handled” (which is funny, because Soejima accidentally mistook the Concept!Heroine of P3 for Yukari, like he didn’t realize those were two separate characters in like the really early days of P3, so they have very similar concept designs. I think they even share one design XD). So yeah my first impression was a false negative turned into a “Ok cool I’ll try it out.”
So months later it comes out, and I get it. And I start playing....and I don’t stop. Not like with FES. Like it had been awhile since I had played FES, and I knew if I “powered through it” to get to Aigis it get better but.....I...didn’t need to. Junpei and Yukari were a lot more tolerable, and I think that’s thanks to the SLs we got. And like WE GET TO START THEIR SLs EARLY! AND THE BOYS GET THEM TOO???? Like hot dang! Like Yukari, she’s available right at the beginning! You don’t have to wait! No like even if you are NG+ max charm, I had to wait till like Aigis joined before her SL would actually start (there’s a date restriction on top of it for the male, at least in FES I realized 2 years ago when I played it with some college friends). And Junpei, Ken, Ryoji, Koro, Shinji, and Aki (all characters that really needed a link to expand on them more) get more development! And Rio and Saori are great, Rio’s link is 1000% times better than Kazushi’s link (I hated how the only positive options is letting the guy just crumble, I felt like a horrible friend a lot of the times with the MaleMC, which is weird cause every non-main game iteration acts like he’s a great friend). Saori replacing Maya, well that and Akihiko replacing Minato’s Star guy was saddening, cause I liked them. But thankfully it was an even trade. The rest were a trade up from the MaleMC (Junpei was a lot better than Kenji, wasn’t a fan of P3!Chihiro, very creepy, and remember I saw her in P4 first and thought she was fine, I was sad about Yuko but I kinda like Koro more so...*shrugs* more or less a fair trade, Shinji was obvie a trade up, and I think Ryoji was a trade up from Mr. Fortune guy whom Yukiko would pretty much rip off his SL beat by beat but somehow do it a liiiiitle better). I also liked how Fuuka’s SL was changed....only cause I tend to remember a liiiiiiitle bit more of her FeMC link than I do the Male one (sadly I just....can never remember her whole link....). So I would say she had the “better links” because it helped expand more on the MC’s relationship with the guys and Ryoji (which I found was really lacking on the male side, esp when Junpei tries to claim us as even...normal friends). Not that the Male’s were (all) horrible, but the FeMC does replace a lot of the worst ones (namely, imo, Moon, Magician, and Chariot) with a lot better ones, and the good ones she also replaces are met with a pretty even/fair trade. Also again, Male SEES+Ryoji SLs. I mean Shinji/Ryoji’s links you need to “bust your balls” for those two, but...not really. XD I’m pretty sure (at least with Shinji, need to double check with Ryoji) as long as you say the right stuff, you get a rank up. The real ball buster was the Male’s side because you 100% need a guide to get every SL on his side, FeMC has a bit more freedom (not THAT much but a bit more).
She also had a larger range of personality options (aka it’s not her only personality, she could be a lot of different things) than the MaleMC (so she was similar to Souji in this regard). I could make her be a bitch, maker her peppy, nice, angry, conservative, a lot of things. I felt like there was a lot more to do with her (have her be emo? Sure! Have her be nice? Sure! and so on and so on). I felt like she was more than just being “there,” more than being along for the ride. I loved her anger issues and violent tendencies, the fact she was dark enough to be willing to kill someone, the fact she’s probably a stepford smiler and is actually really hurting underneath it all. I liked how she had personality you could trace and piece together and mess around with to make a different combo of FeMC, as opposed to MaleMC who is just....kinda there....his options are...there most of the time (sometimes some personality leaks out but not a whole lot)...and you have to come up with a personality all on your own instead of piecing together traces of one (they at least adapted this well into the movies by making him numb and depressed and then recovering as a means to explain this odd detachment in the game, but you probably don’t see it when you are first playing without that context). She could be more vocal at times (not all the time but times where the MC wouldn’t talk she would sometimes have an option to say something), she could also make a change as well (Shinji’s link). So yeah I liked how her side had some impact and could change some things. (I mean, in retrospect, I wouldn’t have minded if she had changed more, but I also gotta remember this is a PSP era game). But most importantly, I felt closer to the team. The SLs helped sooooooo much, I felt like the core of SEES, I connected everyone, we were all a unit. The extra events, even if they were the same as the male’s, felt deeper cause I felt like I was hanging out with an actual coworker turned friend rather than a ‘coworker who says I’m their friend but I don’t feel like we got there yet” type of feeling. When anyone was like “dang we friends” I was like “hell yeah we are.”
I also like how, while she’s a bit more upbeat and friendly, it fits with the game. The game does start off light guys, it doesn’t really get dark-dark till Oct. If anything, her being friendly (if you player her that way) and getting along with people, and the just how it feels like genuine friends really feels more impactful when the dark stuff starts to come around....since she gets more shook and has to face the harshness and overcome it. It feels like it impacts her. MaleMC it....it can feel like it doesn’t as much (again the game, not the side content, the side content it does impact him). I feel like the MaleMC had a similar detachment as I did when I first played on FES. “Oh that sucks Shinji died, pretty sad, wonder what’s gonna happen next.” So like...THAT is just...there.....
So yeah, basically....I had issues with P3, and I felt like she fixed a lot, not all but a lot. Sure she has her own slew of problems (my issues are more that she might not change enough, like she changed enough to justify her, but I feel like they could do more. Also, connecting to that point, them repeating a lot of the same dialogue....I felt like some could/needed to be changed....Like Junpei’s jealousy works really well with the MaleMC but him suddenly being friends at the end doesn’t, while the FeMC they are friends....but he still has the same jealous out spurts and like......he can have that, but I feel like they should’ve changed it a bit and added more complexity to them since they are already friends).
Do I think FeMC is the better MC of the two? (Main) Game wise....yes. Her bonds are what I feel like is what Atlus wanted to do with the MC but messed up (evident with how they handle him with the manga, movie, dramacd, and PQ/P3D). Manga/Movie/DramaCD (and PQ/P3D) vs her? They are the same tbh, the FeMC is just the stronger game equivalent (bond execution wise, which was the male’s side’ issue and one that’s fixed in side stuff) to the other iterations of Minato than his actual equivalent imo.
Anyway, as the years went on I got more attached, esp when I compared and contrast the two MCs (btw as the years went on I grew to like P3 even more as well as Minato, so all of the above is just my first impressions), wished there could be a version of P3 where they are together, later wishing for a spinoff where there together, or a spinoff where she meets P4 kids cause I feel like it’d be interesting how she’d interact with them (cause it’d be different to Minato’s). Her clashing ideals with Male cast and P4 cast, her working together, working off each other. Her dynamic was just interesting, I saw potential and what she could bring to the table and it sucked she basically wasn’t allowed (mostly cause, as it was recently revealed, they didn’t know how to do it). I saw potential, and still do see potential, in the other MCs in all of the games, it’s just as each new entry came about....the need to see the FeMC’s utilized grew more and more (cause again, they were already utilizing P3/4MC’s potentials, and P1/2 were locked behind some possible legal tape, and PTS was retconned out with the only hope of it ever coming back being for it to be retconned again to fit into the story, so she was literally the only one of this group that could be used and had yet to be used). I also really wanna see a duo of FeMC/Minato and Tatsuya/Maya, I just....I really wanna....cause P2 had a lot of duality themes, and then P3 kicked it up to 20 notches, and I’d love to see P2/3 meld together! ;w;
(oh I should note I do like P1 and P2 a lot, I really love P1′s manga tbh, just in case anyone was wondering where I stood on them. So yeah it’s not like I only love P3P and P4. I actually like P2 a lot. It’s tied with P4 as my fav, tho FemC might be my fav MC, tho possibly tied with Maya and Souji. I do think they should come back, but I’m also aware they have....a stickier situation than the FeMC or even PTS.....and we all know where I stand with P5 so ahuhuhu 8U)
So uhhhhh yeah, that’s my story....on how I kinda slowly fell in love with this character, one of which I had a neutral stance (I didn’t automatically think “Female MC? Ok I LOVE her!” or think she was gonna change the game for me, it all just kinda happened). And how she made me appreciate P3 (and the MaleMC) more. And then by the time I realized it I realized I was in drought hell with pretty much nothing. :’D

Detritus and McCarran meet at Hades’ Palace [OC]
I guess it’s time once again for my midnight OC rambles... this time with two of my new OCs, Emperor Detritus and Grand Courier McCarran. These are part of my post-apocalyptic fantasy world, meeting at the Emperor’s palace in the Citadel of Novar. Maybe one day I’ll use this to post more lore... - C
Detritus was sat on his throne, legs crossed, as he read a book and took a long drag from his cigarette. He had all his “regal” dress on even though he was sat there disregarding any sense of urgency, or remembering his plans for the day. He was meant to be having a meeting with a fellow senator of the New Provadence Republic which he had just joined as part of a political alliance between his Empire and the republic.
The almost shanty doors creak open as a figure dressed entirely in power armour walks through the door, removing the helmet as he walks up to the throne. Detritus glances over and almost jumps out of his seat like he had completely zoned out (which he had) reading and smoking.
“Emperor. It’s a pleasure to see you,” the voice softly beckons, as the figure kneels down, his helmet in his hands, “I don’t know what your customs are but I guess over the top is better than too casual.”
“Oh just get off your knees. The floor’s filthy.” Detritus rasps, placing a strip of red fabric in his book to mark the page and closing it before dropping it on the floor beside the throne, “You must be the guy they sent. These fools call me Detritus. So I guess that’s who I am to you too, heh. Now what’cha doing standing there? Let me get you a drink.”
Before McCarran can introduce himself, or even say anything about the drink the emperor is offering him, Detritus is already up pouring two glasses of whiskey.
“So who are you then, eh? You were brave to even try and come here. And lucky that those ferals didn’t rip you to shreds when they saw you, smoothskin.” Detritus inquires.
“Oh. I am the Grand Courier of the Courier Syndicate. Uh, the name’s McCarran. Dominic McCarran. I’m one of the senators, we met last week.”
“Ah yes,” Detritus hisses, “we did. Sorry I have been so busy making sure these idiots don’t go feral. You’ve seen what they do to humans when they come in. Territorial bastards. I have no problem though. With humans that is. The ferals have forgotten who they were before, I sure as hell haven’t. I still hold my human self very close a hundred and fifty years on. I mean how could I forget? I had my dream job back before the war - Chief Detective Inspector. Now those were the days... oh, sorry I got completely carried away. Now why did you come again?”
“I was sent here to give you your badge, us senators have it so we can tell who is part of the government and who isn’t... and I guess for diplomatic immunity... so we don’t get ripped to, uh, shreds.” McCarran replies, “I was the only one who was, I guess, brave enough to come here. Yet, I’m still the youngest. The Syndicate is barely three years old and I’m here being the responsible guy. The brave guy. I guess while I’m here, we can get to know eachother. Cordiality.”
McCarran shyly hands over the medal, a golden badge with a falcon emblem on it and a crimson background. The badge has three stars, a subtle reference to Detritus’s past even though McCarran doesn’t know that personally. Whoever made the badge clearly did their fair share of research.
“Of course, you don’t need to ask. Anyone who makes it up and doesn’t try to kill me is a friend. Now do you want anything else other than just the whiskey? Any chems? Why don’t you come up to my room. It’s more comfortable up there. And, hey, thanks for the medal. It looks cool.”
He fumbles around with the pin for a moment, almost stabs his finger as he attaches the badge to his tattered trench coat. He throws his cigarette to the floor, extinguishing it with his foot before taking a big sip of his drink and walks over to the staircase behind his metal throne. McCarran follows behind, nervously looking around him as the Irrads around the throne room either look at him with dumbfounded interest or scornful glares. He twirls his drink in his glass before taking small sips. McCarran is much, much younger than Detritus, being about 260 years his junior. Detritus is also taller than him but incredibly slim, his bony yet muscular torso showing from his low-buttoned off-white shirt.
The two walk upstairs, to a modest living room with two comfortable yet tattered sofas, one red and the other a faded grey. A small wooden coffee table is between them, covered in papers, broken pencils, and another bottle of alcohol. Detritus briefly walks to his large bookshelf on one of the walls before straddling over the red sofa before rolling over onto it, spilling some of his whiskey over his face as he finished the glass.
“Welcome to my place. Nice ain’t it. Please take a seat on the other sofa, it’s probably the cleanest thing you’ll sit on in this entire city so make most of it.” Detritus chuckles before coughing slightly, “I guess, make yourself at home.”
“Oh, thanks. Yeah, yeah.”
McCarran walks over to the grey sofa, wiping it off and stepping out of his armour before he takes a seat. He looks uncomfortable but he knows that it’s worse lower down and he’s incredibly lucky to have made it up without getting ratted out by one of the palace’s guards. He breathes a great sigh of relief before taking another sip.
“So, kid, what’s your story then?” Detritus asks.
“Well, I’m a mercenary. Have been all my life. I used to work for the PNL... well until they tried to kill me. They said I was “too good”. Can you believe that? I did some things I’m not super proud of and hid for a few years up north before going to Metropolis and starting this syndicate. How about you? You seem... so interesting. I’ve never met an Irrad quite like you before.”
“Heh. You seem like a pretty useful guy. But me? I was around before the bombs dropped. I was a detective. Before I became an Irrad, I was called Lawrence. Lawrence Connolly. I was a pretty big deal in Caledale, working on all the big cases. Man, what a life that was. When the bombs dropped, I was working a murder case down in the metro under the city. That’s why I didn’t die straight away like most people did but I couldn’t get out because some rubble had blocked off the stairway out. I survived off of water pipe leaks and quickly mutating rats before I myself mutated. I remember waking up one morning and I was as dry as a raisin. I think one of my toes had fallen off and I was going absolutely mental. If it wasn’t for some synth clearing his way towards Vault 24, I wouldn’t have been found.
I looked a lot worse for a while, I was a drifter roaming the wasteland before I found this crater below us. A bunch of other Irrads were around it, and they saw me. They said there was a god of radiation and apparently it was me. I mean I went along with it, thinking it was some kind of joke. I mean I was happy that I was being spoken to, even if half the words they said were either utter bullshit or incomprehensible nonsense. They built me this tower and all these buildings. I just led them. I realise now that they’re being serious but I don’t know, to be honest. I was just a fourty-something year old detective stuck in the wrong era. So I changed and look where I am now. I still like collecting books and music like I did before but now I have people that do it for me and boy is this stuff worth a lot. I won’t let go of it though, no matter how many times the Metropolis Provisional University or whatever it calls itself tries to buy them off of me. It’s the last thing reminding me of a better time. One where I didn’t look like a goddamn anthropomorphic raisin. That’s my story. Would you like me to put on a song? So you can see why these are so important to me?”
“Yeah, I- I’d like that, actually.” McCarran replies. “You’ve been through a hell of a lot, Detritus. You’re definitely some man.”
“Heh. Thanks. That means a lot to me. And hey, you can call me Laurie.” He chuckles under his breath as he gets up and flicks though his record collection before picking one, taking it out of its sleeve very carefully and placing it on the turntable. He gently lowers the pin with one hand and turns up the speakers with the other. As the music starts, he opens the bottle on the coffee table and pours another round of drinks before lighting a new cigarette and leaning back into the sofa with his drink.
The two share a quiet moment, enjoying the music as it plays on.

Chapter 3: We (Don’t) Love a Burning Town
The town smelled much like you’d expect it to, unwashed people everywhere. Surprisingly, though, it kind of blended together into something I found myself struggling to notice over everything else. The smell of the people was overpowered by fresh bread, cooking meat, and open flames. All in all, it was a nice change of pace, and in some ways even reminded me of home, except it lacked a permeating stench of urine.
Seth
What?
Cool Guy
Have you never been to London? It smells a lot like piss. Much like the smell, the look itself also reminded me of London, except from a much earlier era. The aesthetic of the game’s civilisations had always been Victorian-Era, most people wearing ragged brown clothing. In contrast to them, our group’s clothing was anachronistic and awesome, drawing a lot of glances our way as we walked into the marketplace. Each stand had someone who looked like a thirty-year chain-smoker and spoke like it, hoarse throats sounding painful just to listen to, god knows how it must have felt speaking like it. I was almost tempted to tell them to clear their throats before speaking, but the noise that they would have made would most likely have been reminiscent of a noise the Old Ones would make, summoning Cthulhu at the end of the world. Or something, I never actually read any Lovecraft after I found out what he named his cat. Kinda dodgy, honestly.
Amy
Wait, what’s his cat called?
Cool Guy
Google it.
Amy
…Oh. Oh no.
Cool Guy
While I wasn’t keen on talking to any of the people selling stuff, I couldn’t deny there was some things they were selling that I wanted to buy. Guns that had been cobbled together from scrap metal, bullets probably barely strong enough to penetrate (heh) the skin. Armour that was little more than kneepads… except duct-taped together and strung over the entire body. As stupid as it looked, it would have definitely protected from the scrap guns. And then, as if a ray of light from god had shone down onto it, I saw the stand unlike the others. It was clean, almost pristine even, and the seller matched the stall. He wore a fixed, ear-to-ear smile, and his hands were tightly knit across the surface of the stall as he looked around for a potential buyer. But I barely noticed him, despite how handsome he was, as my eyes were instead drawn to what he was selling. Two large walls of displays, as well as a glass box on the stall in front of him, had rows and rows of swords. Ranging from simple short-swords to opulent, cobalt blades, katanas, rapiers, and a darkly-coloured metal broadsword, which was the one on his back. A crimson ribbon tied around the handle blew in the wind, which I couldn’t even feel but I had a feeling it would have always blown since it was just that awesome. I wanted, no, I needed one. But I could tell from his wide-eyes that any attempts at directly stealing one would end up being flawed. Even if I knew I could run faster than he could, there was also the issue of leaving my friends. Which, to be fair, also wouldn’t be a problem if I could get out by myself. Looking around, I began to formulate a plan that would have made Pinky and the Brain jealous with the convolutedness and totally unnecessary steps involved. Barely any of the other people were watching their stand, so snagging a bottle of alcohol wasn’t that hard. A quick tap on Seth’s shoulder and a whispered request, and all I had to do was get ready. I was close enough to the stall to grab a sword, but far enough away that the man behind it wouldn’t notice me. Now I just had to wait for Seth to pretend to be a drunk and cause a commotion.
Seth
Okay, it’s safe to say I totally misread this situation. See, CG only asked me to create a distraction, and he gave me a bottle of alcohol. Sure, I enjoy a few drinks here and there… and everywhere, but getting drunk, or even faking it, wasn’t as good of an idea as what I had. From what I could see, everything was made of straw, and I had a bottle of fairly flammable liquid. A quick rip of fabric from a tarp, an open flame, and a flick of the wrist later, and I caused a distraction that I think went fairly damn well. It was only when I saw Tabitha staring at me, mouth agape, that it occurred to me that I might have screwed up.
Cool Guy
Well, honestly the plan worked, but it was a lot more of a commotion than I had liked. The seller ran out of his stall to help everyone else as they started to quell the fire, giving me ample time to run in and see what I could quickly pilfer. The katana looked nice, but so did the cobalt sword. It took a few seconds for me to realise that I could most likely have both, so I grabbed the cobalt one and threw the sheath over my back, opting to just hold the katana in my hands. A few steps into my run away, I was convinced that everything was going to go well, despite the fact the fire had quickly spread past where it had been thrown to and was pretty much engulfing the entire town. My positive thoughts were quickly stopped as the black sword slashed from seemingly nowhere, mercifully stopped by the katana I was holding in my hand. The sheath, which had been nothing more than a light fabric, fell apart, and I quickly moved it to my open hand. The merchant stood in front of me, his happy expression now replaced by rage. It didn’t help that the fire was being reflected in his eyes, as well as the fact that this dude had moved hella fast.
“You think you can steal from me? You think you can burn down my home?!” He barked. I had a sneaking suspicion he was able to tell the two events were linked.
“Would you believe me if I said this was a huge misunderstanding?” I asked, despite knowing exactly what response I would end up getting. The merchant… hell, might as well call him what he is, the swordsman readied his blade, levelling it in my direction.
“Any last words?” He asked, and I thought carefully about what I was going to say next, the laws of tropes that I’d seen in movies telling me what was going to happen after I spoke.
“I should probably warn you, I’ve watched a lot of anime…” I began, levelling the katana similarly to how he had, except diagonally.
“Children’s cartoons? That won’t save you!” The swordsman cried out before flinging himself forward at me, slashing downwards in a deadly arc. I brought the katana up, planting my feet firmly in the ground as his sword hit mine, sending sparks flying and a forceful vibration through my body.
“…I was also going to say I’ve been doing kendo for ten years.” I finished, having known that he would have attacked me before letting me finish what I said. “Unofficially, of course. I got kicked out for testicle kicks.” I added, before kicking him in the testicles. I had kind of hoped I wouldn’t have subjected another man to that kind of torture, but then again, I did foreshadow it like five seconds before doing it. That was ample time to react. Not my fault this guy’s a dummy. To the guy’s credit, he composed himself quickly, only brief tears visible in his eyes. A horizontal slash from him caused me to jump back, bumping against a crate that I quickly jumped onto. “It’s over, swordsman. I have the high ground.” I quipped, wondering if he would be cliché (or in the know) enough to respond with the appropriate line.
“You underestimate my power.” He returned, making me slightly giddy inside. “Hiding behind sunglasses, the truth of your eyes concealed from everyone. Who are you to call yourself the victor?” He growled, swiping at me again and pushing me higher up the stack of crates. I moved my katana arm to block some of the swipes, trying to use the force to push him back down, but it seemed like the Star Wars stuff was at its limit with one-liners.
“I’m Cool Guy, the coolest guy you’ll ever meet. And also the last, depending on what happens next.” I stuck my chest out in a triumphant pose, which I had to quickly drop to avoid being spit-roasted by his sword. The clangs of our swords rang out across the burning town, which just reminded me of a different game entirely. A quick leap to the top of a stall, and I was able to see a lot more of the town than I had before. That fire had spread very quickly, despite Tabitha’s best efforts. Seth was just watching in awe, moving from foot to foot as if he wanted to jump in and help but couldn’t. I kept looking, trying to find Amy, but couldn’t see her anywhere. I hoped that she was safe, for a brief moment before getting knocked onto my ass and remembering that I was much less safe than she was. The swordsman’s dark-bladed sword was aimed at my neck, and any movement I made was sure to be the death of me. For a moment, I thought the swordsman was going to ask if I had any last words, but he shook it off, seemingly thinking better of it. Smart, but not exactly what I wanted. He moved his sword to the side, giving me Game of Thrones flashbacks, when a shrill whistle pierced through the air. Much like the whistle, a shrill throwing knife pierced through the swordsman’s arm, causing him to drop the sword and leaving me with an opening. I rolled onto my back, and kicked out with both legs, hitting him right in his weak spot. Again. That time, he had no warning, but it was his balls or my life, and I knew which one I preferred. I looked over to who had thrown the sword, and saw Amy juggling the knives. “Hell yeah, a deus ex machina!” I yelled with excitement, rolling off of the stand and onto the sandy floor. Seth ran over, and Amy jumped down from the crate she had stood on to be high enough to see us, and Tabitha joined us after a moment.
“What the actual hell, you two?!” She yelled, looking at both me and Seth. Looking around, I could see why she was mad. The fire had definitely reached the point of uncontrollable now.
“…Free sword?” I said finally, showing her the sword I had taken. She opened her mouth to yell again, sighed, and smacked her hand against her face, groaning through her fingers.
“Well, we’re outlaws now, so I suggest we get the hell out of here.” She said through gritted teeth, and I pointed to the exit to the marketplace, a coarse stone wall with an archway we could leave through. Tabitha led the way, Seth following closely behind her going through multiple apologies, Amy behind him giggling as she watched the carnage in the town unfold. I took up the rear (hehehe) of the group, jogging slightly to keep up with the rest of them. None of the other townsfolk were attempting to stop us, instead just watching as we made our way out of the town. I skidded to a stop just outside the archway, turning on my heel and looking at the people who were all watching me. It was cliché, but I had to do it.
“Ladies and gentlemen, you will remember this as the day you almost caught-” I would have finished my reference, had Tabitha not doubled back solely to hit me across the head with an open palm. “-gak.” I finished, which really undermined the entire epic outlaw theme I had been trying to go for, and I instead opted to straighten my glasses, flash them a coy smile, and run away before they realised that I was exhausted and they could have very easily taken me. I may be awesome, but even I can be bested.
