Canada, Truth & Reconciliation, & Indigenous Games

Hello friends,

Today (September 30th) is the National Day of Truth & Reconciliation in Canada. It is a very recent holiday in this country, and it’s also very important to me. I want to spend some time today telling you about it, and then (since this is a ttrpg blog) directing you to some indigenous storytellers and designers that deserve a spotlight for various reasons.

I am not Indigenous. This information is a collection of knowledge that I have gained through university coursework, personal research I've undertaken, and relationships I've cultivated with indigenous friends who have taken pains to educate me and highlight how these issues have personally affected them. I am aware that the summary I'm providing is incomplete, and there may be elements that I don't fully understand the implications of.

If you are Indigenous, please keep in mind that this post may recall some painful and personal moments of history for you. Proceed with caution. The shout-outs to indigenous creators can be found after the heading “The Storytellers.”

The Truth.

Canada has been engaged in a cultural genocide of its indigenous peoples since European settlers started the colonization of the country. This genocide had many avenues, including the creation of the Indian Act, the relocation of many Indigenous peoples to restricted Reserves, and a disturbing trend of missing and murdered Indigenous women. For the purposes of today however, I’m going to stick to just talking about Residential Schools, and the impact they had on Indigenous families and their children.

Residential schools were designed to “kill the Indian” and “save the child”, in the words of John A Macdonald, the prime minister who authorized their creation. They were designed to sever Indigenous children from their culture and raise them in a Christian, colonial context. These residential schools were harsh, forbidding Indigenous children to speak their mother tongues, cutting their hair, and forcing them to learn skills considered “useful”, in the language of the colonizer, away from their parents. The schools were also hotbeds of abuse. Alarming numbers of children fell ill and died at these schools - the death toll to this day is unknown. From April 1, 1920 to some time in the 1990’s, residential school attendance was mandatory for Indigenous children from the ages of 7 to 16.

The Sixties’ Scoop is a reference to a mass kidnapping of Indigenous children in the 1950’s and 60’s, who were forcibly removed from their homes and “adopted” into non-Indigenous families. While the last residential school in Canada closed in 1997, Indigenous children still make up over 50% of all children in private foster care, despite only accounting for just over 7% of all children under age 15 in Canada.

The Reconciliation.

Reconciliation is a goal prompted by Indigenous groups and elders. It is a choice that promotes "balance and harmony," a way of life that encourages coexistence, according to the words of one residential school survivor, Hereditary Chief, Dr. Robert Joseph.

In 2007, The Indian Residential Schools Settlement came into effect, offering compensation to survivors of many residential schools.

In 2008, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada was officially launched, intended to be a guide for the Canadian government to help establish lasting reconciliation. This commission was a way to formalize a method of collecting data, and it also had the responsibility of developing a list of recommendations for the country of Canada to follow, in the goal of pursuing a relationship between the Indigenous peoples of Canada and the government of Canada.

In 2007, Cindy Blackstock, a First Nations (Gitxsan) activist launched a court case against the Canadian government, for under-funding social services provided to children living on First Nations reservations. This was in regards to Jordan’s Principle, a child-first Canadian policy that is meant to ensure that First Nations children have equal access to all government funded public services as other Canadian children. The Truth and Reconciliation Commission made the respect of Jordan’s Principle one of its 94 Calls to Action for the Canadian government.

The Canadian Human Rights Tribunal became involved in 2016, when they found more alleged breaches of the Canadian Human Rights Act in regards to Jordan’s Principle. As of September this year, the Federal Government is still attempting to dismiss human rights complaints regarding the use (or, in fact, neglect) of Jordan’s Principle.

Canada’s history of residential schools and use of the foster care system has grievously wounded Indigenous families and children. The disruption of family life and the forcible removal of children from their culture has created legacies of loneliness, pain, and suicide. Indigenous people today can trace their own familial wounds to the legacy of residential schools and the lack of resources provided to them from the government. The National Day of Truth and Reconciliation is a day to remember this legacy and provide a space for education, but it isn’t enough.

So, how do we connect this to ttrpgs?

When it comes to the milestones that have been achieved in Canadian history, those milestones have been made because we listened to Indigenous voices. The recommendations made by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission that have been followed are having real and positive effects for Indigenous peoples in Canada. Listening to the stories of Residential School survivors has been integral to the processes recommended and undertaken by the Canadian government.

We need Indigenous stories. We need Indigenous storytellers.

The Storytellers

Coyote & Crow.

Coyote & Crow Games is a tabletop games publisher, primarily focused on the tabletop roleplaying game, Coyote & Crow. This is a world and game whose design team is fully Indigenous, from various First Nations people groups across North America. Coyote & Crow is a futuristic game about a land untouched by colonization, a land changed by a series of climate events that have changed the geographical and social landscape. It involves supernatural powers, a completely unique form of civil organization, and a unique d12 dice pool system

In a recent update, Connor Alexander, as the face of Coyote & Crow, announced some business decisions that include a creation of a consultant branch of the company, to provide professional consultation services for other creative endeavours that are looking to include Indigenous Representation in games.

What I love most about Coyote and Crow is that it’s a world where Indigenous creators have been given full reign over the ways they are represented in the fiction, and it provides a unique social and political imagining of society that pulls from many First Nations cultures. It’s refreshing, it’s exciting, and it provides a lot of guidance for non-Indigenous players so that they can engage with the world in a way that’s respectful.

Wendigo Workshop

This is a small team based in Quebec, Canada. I’m not entirely sure whether the team is fully Indigenous, but there are Indigenous creators as part of the team.

Currently the Workshop is working on a number of different games, including… Anomaly Hunters; a monster hunting ttrpg built on the Breathless SRD. Arkelon Chronicles; a science-fantasy ttrpg surrounding the discovery of an Alien ruin. Last Hope; a Caltrop Core game about magical girls fighting to protect the world while balancing their student lives.

Bramble Wolf Games

@sahonithereadwolf is an Indigenous creator based in Appalachia looking to make games that mean something. I found out about him through his game Exceptionals, a game about community, activism and kinetic eye beams. It’s inspired heavily by X-Men, but instead of telling superhero stories, it’s more about the fostering of a community outside of the systems created and enforced by colonial governments.

Sahoni is also currently working on a game called Protect the Sacred, a game inspired by Indiana Jones, but focused on the protection and preservation of monsters and artifacts in the interests of the cultures that have been stolen from by colonial powers. The game is about your relationship to your culture, and resistance to fascism - and you can get sneak peeks to this game through Sahoni’s Patreon.

Both Protect the Sacred and Exceptionals involve character creation that requires players to answer questions about who they are, what they do, and how they affect the community around them. They both recognize the community around you as integral to your success, and I think that this point of view is such an important concept to consider when using games as an art form that can expand your social imagination.

There is a consultancy service in Alberta, Canada called Pe Matawe Consulting, which is not focused specifically on ttrpgs, but does provide consulting for various creative endeavours. Understanding this map: Please note that I’m not a professional map maker and know absolutely nothing about cartography. This is simply a quick visual reference guide for navigating post-apocalypse America.

That being said, this map is subject to change and not wholly accurate or representative of safe/unsafe zones, as they constantly change, and there is yet to be an official database within this alternative universe. Think of this as an approximation. Also, keep in mind that this is 12 years after the initial outbreak, and things did not always look like this, nor will they continue to remain the same. Take this all with a grain of salt.

Zone breakdowns

Red, orange, & gray zones: AVOID AT ALL COSTS! Death is almost guaranteed from radiation and mutant anthrophages alike.

Blue Zone: Republic of Arcadia

Yellow zones: The yellow zones on the map are areas where human settlements still exist, and some communities are even thriving. However, these areas lack military protection and government aid, so they are considered unsafe (however subjective the word “safe” is within the context of this map). Yellow zones are also susceptible to radioactive wastelands but are often unexplored, classifying them as "unknown." Travelers in these areas risk encountering various dangers outside of anthrophages, including mutant animals, extremist groups, wasteland gangs, marauders, raiders, and other unsavory characters. Despite their predicted presence, these groups are not marked on this map as they tend to move around and are hard to keep tally of.

Green zones (power & economy): Areas designated as green zones are not entirely safe from security breaches, nemaxys outbreaks, and gang wars over territory and supply runs. These zones consist mainly of civilians striving to survive and establish a livelihood. As a result of the volatile post-outbreak landscape, the green zones are divided into constantly changing sectors. The few remaining "safe" human settlements are widely dispersed, leading the remaining Governors and congressmen to propose the formation of nation-states to exert better control over their respective areas.

However, the current de facto President, the former Speaker of the House, is determined to maintain control over sector territories and military command. They face the challenge of navigating a fragmented nation while contending with threats from the ROA and other factions attempting to seize power, testing their leadership in their efforts to restore order and unity to the ravaged remains of the US.

Despite the President’s efforts, the power vacuum in the sectors continues to expand as power-hungry politicians spare no effort to secure civilian allegiance. Some congressmen and governors have carved out their own fiefdoms within green and yellow zones, effectively becoming warlords of their respective regions.

Following the outbreak, the Hawaiian islands and Alaska are presumed to be the safest and untouched land masses. Hawaii closed its borders and halted all imports/ exports as soon as the first case of the nemaxys contagion hit the news. Meanwhile, a mass exodus of people left the continental US and headed up to Alaska, and the new capitol was relocated to a small Alaskan fishing town.

After the establishment of the Provisional Emergency Relief Agency (PERA), a federal-level build-back program was implemented in all green zones. The Bureau of Labor & Exports (BOLE) oversaw the program and regulated Chattel Services Inc. (CSI) and the remaining corporate-owned labor forces, which had a significant impact on the reconstruction efforts.

Under stringent government sanctions, an underground illicit black market has flourished, giving rise to new crime families that have ascended to power. These new syndicates replaced the previously dominant players, seizing control of the markets and territories once held by their fallen rivals.

Economic collapse rendered money worthless for a period, but eventually, the monetary system was reinstated, allowing for the revival of commerce through traditional means and ration tickets.

While crime and punishment were primarily addressed at the local level, the aftermath of the chaos led most people to abandon violence once their basic needs were met. Gainful employment provided them with a sense of purpose and belonging in society.

What about travel?

Transportation outside green zones mainly involves using trains, planes, or boats, as navigating on the ground with vehicles through a post-apocalyptic wasteland is considered too risky. However, some people still opt for ground transportation despite being viewed as dangerous and ill-advised compared to other means of travel.

Hm, I love getting inspired and analyzing characters. DF! Sans is just Red, DF! Papyrus is just Papyrus, DF! Gaster is only Wings to his grandchildren…. Oh yes, we’re using that theory here, I enjoy the dynamic seeing as to how the timeline played out. Really young Papyrus is a bit manipulated by Gaster, when Sans pushed his brother away Wings took it as an advantage…. when Papyrus was cripped and seemingly perma-disabled only then did Sans began to care. So Gaster mentored Sans in welding to makeshift him a proper jaw and took Paps another year before he could speak properly...

His speech pattern still remains disjointed so many times he’s removed from the front lines and Sans reserves all the temper of the 3.

And to think Maria is what catches the attention of the most angry skeleton! She and him both die, hm. Say 1950. I do so enjoy torturing them mwah ahaha.

1890-1950 MAFIAFELL TIMELINE

1890: First minster emergence from barrier, remain complacent in scattered regions across Canada

1896: Monster General takes first human soul on surface, first evidence of monsterkinds presence found in Canada. Stories and “myths” of creatures circulate. Thanks a lot Jeff.

1898: Increased tensions lead to monster communities forming isolated settlements near major trade centers (like [REDACTED]). Government begins recognizing monster populations.

1901: Monsters establish borders as recognition grows. American industrialists exploit monster labor for dangerous factory work, deepening resentment.

1908: Monsters migrate closer to cities and soon forms disrupt. Humans are viewed as economic competition.

1912: Monster raids on human lands increase hostility. In retaliation, the United States military experiments with living monster magic to counteract monster defenses.

1914: Tensions reach a boiling point, IB by real life European imperialism U.S. wages war against the monster kingdom under ideal of protecting American interests.

1916: The Siege of Underground occurs. Monster military collapses, King Asgore killed, and monster communities forcibly relocated to reserves for human study.

1917: Monsters granted “limited citizenship,” through heavily restricted rights. Former monster territories are absorbed into U.S. industrial zones and monsters begin to assimilate to human culture.

1920: President Kempt Warren promises normalcy but fails to resolve monster inequality. Magical weaponry development surges as corporations recognize its profit potential and smuggling of monsterkind begins in urban areas.

1922: Prohibition begins. Black markets thrive, selling magics, consumer goods, fleshtrade, and new monster alcohol. Organized crime explodes, involving human and monster gangs.

1924: Anti-monster sentiment fuels the rise of extremist political groups, demanding segregation and tighter restrictions. Monsters form their own unions and underground communities for protection.

1925: Early television prototypes powered by magical energy appear, revolutionizing entertainment and news. This blending of magic and technology creates a unique cultural identity.

1926: President William Cull focuses on economic growth, ignoring societal unrest. The divide between humans and monsters widens as monsters face violence, exclusion, and job discrimination.

1929: Stock Market Crash leads to the Great Depression. Monsters are scapegoated as job thieves and blamed for economic collapse.

1930: Magical weaponry and machinery technologies reach new heights, giving rise to armored cars, magic-powered aircraft, and industrial automation. Wealthy elites control most of this innovation.

1931: Prohibition ends. Human-run mafia families dominate trade in cities in exploiting magic services. Monsters partake with protection and roles of defense for human mafias.

1933: Fiere D. Roster becomes president, introducing “New Deal” to restore the economy. Monsters are largely excluded from government relief programs save for MLA(Monster Liberation Act- allows designated magic users government funding in independent merchant market.

1934(CURRENT): Monsters remain second-class citizens, confined to slums and ghettos. Cities like [REDACTED] form melting pots for poverty, crime, and societal divide. Progress in technology like magic radio, early television, and mechanized transport contrasts moral and social regression. Extremist human groups clash with monster rights activists.

1935: Monsters gain limited inclusion in labor unions, increasing political tension. Roster struggles to manage both economic recovery and societal divisions.

1936: Advances in magical medicine revolutionize healthcare but remain inaccessible to most monsters.

1938: Political radicals push for harsher policies against monsters, fueling riots in major cities. The military continues testing magic-infused weaponry, preparing for potential global conflict.

1939: With tensions escalating an arms race begins between the U.S. and other nations seeking to harness magical technologies. Canada and European powers grow wary of America.

1940: Monster-rights movements gain traction, demanding full citizenship and equal treatment. Whispers of a new global war loom as technological advancements make conflict inevitable.

1945: Supreme Court case “Arlow Trials” highlight case study of monster laborer accused of murdering human factor overseer. Explores dynamic of labor exploitation and systemic discrimination and opens perspectives for monster rights onpar with African-Americans.

1947: In the preparation for war, the HME(Human Monster Equals) act is formed giving monster same rights as humans. In the same situation as African+Americans John Crow laws are passed.

1950: WW2 erupts with America already a world power fueled by magic weaponry and advanced machinery. Monsters are drafted into the military further complicating societal role.

1950-1970: Post-war America emerges as a global superpower with magic-infused technology dominating industries. As result Canada is formed into America and no longer exists. Cultural divide shows signs of healing.

1970/Beyond: Magic becomes commercialized integrated into everyday life like television, transportation, and weapons. Monsters gradually gain equality but carry generations of discrimination and resentment.

Subject: Urgent Appeal for the Protection of LGBTQ+ Asylum Seekers in Gorom Settlement Camp

To Whom It May Concern,

We hope this message finds you well. We are writing on behalf of the LGBTQ+ community of 115 unregistered asylum seekers who came after the 359 other asylum seekers. This late arrival comes after facing several challenges along the way to reach the camp, including imprisonment and a lack of necessary support to escape perilous conditions. We are reaching out with urgent concerns regarding our safety and well-being, following recent announcements about the potential relocation of our community to other camps within South Sudan.

During a meeting on 5th November 2024, we were informed that Gorom Settlement Camp is scheduled to close by the end of 2025 and that no further registration of asylum seekers will take place. This comes after we have spent 6 months within Gorom without any support from UNHCR, apart from protection services, for which we are deeply grateful. During the meeting, a government official explicitly stated that they "don't want to hear anything about the minority (LGBTQ)" and that we should act as male and female if we are to be registered. We truly understand that our existence as an LGBTQ+ community contradicts local laws, but if the 359 asylum seekers were registered under our umbrella, should we interpret this statement as discrimination or an attempt at conversion therapy? We are deeply confused and concerned about its implications.

This news has left us deeply unsettled, as we face significant risks due to our sexual orientation and gender identity. We respectfully request your assistance in advocating for our protection and the preservation of our community.

We are particularly concerned about the proposed relocation to different camps, which could expose us to further violence and discrimination. Many of us have endured traumatic experiences in previous camps, and we fear that moving to environments where our identities are unaccepted could lead to dire consequences, including physical harm and mental distress.

Our appeal is based on the following critical concerns:

1. Physical Safety: LGBTQ+ individuals are often targeted for violence in hostile settings. We have already faced attacks in previous camps, and we fear similar outcomes in new environments.

2. Mental Health Risks: Separation from our LGBTQ+ peers—who provide essential support—could lead to severe psychological distress, including anxiety and depression.

3. Social Support: Community among LGBTQ+ individuals is vital for our resilience. Dispersing us would undermine this support system.

Gorom Settlement Camp

A major interest in that work [...] was the era of post-war decolonization, and how archaeology connected with it (or not). As the territory of what became the Arab Republic of Egypt emerged from various forms of British rule and Egyptian monarchy, I wanted to know how that process impacted upon archaeology, a field that had been dominated by Euro-Americans (and whose major official institution, the Egyptian Antiquities Service, had been run entirely by French men). [...] The book revolves around, but is not limited to, a major event in the development of what became World Heritage, at least in UNESCO’s -- and, put bluntly, many other people’s -- telling.

UNESCO promotes its International Campaign to Save the Monuments of Nubia, which took place in the adjoining regions of Egyptian and Sudanese Nubia from 1960 until 1980, as central to the development of the 1972 World Heritage Convention. The campaign -- to a large, but not total, extent staffed by teams from the Euro-American institutions who had long excavated in Egypt -- sought to preserve and record ancient temples and archaeological sites in Nubia. Those sites were due to be flooded by the construction of the Aswan High Dam, which, despite having been planned many years earlier, became a centerpiece of Nasser-era modernization plans. Among them the temples at Abu Simbel and Philae, the monuments on the Egyptian -- but not Sudanese -- side of the Nubian border were listed as part of the second tranche of World Heritage sites in 1979, and today Nubian temples are located around the world: “gifts-in-return” for financial contributions to UNESCO’s project, perhaps most famous among them the temple of Dendur at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. The World Heritage Convention, meanwhile, remains the major international piece of legislation in the heritage arena, and at the time of writing has been ratified by 194 States Parties. Oddly, however, beyond an official history published in the 1980s, there has never been a book-length, critical treatment of the Nubian campaign, nor have the articles and book chapters written about the event really addressed it in terms of the “local” (which is to say Egyptian and Sudanese) perspective, let alone the Nubian one.

Flooded Pasts discusses how, in combination with the politics of irrigation and development, UNESCO’s Nubian campaign built on and transformed colonial-era archaeological understandings of Nubia as a region of picturesque ruination: a place filled with ancient, Nile-side ruins, and not a place where people -- Nubians -- lived.

During the early decades of the twentieth century (and before and after the British declaration of nominal Egyptian independence in 1922), the building and heightening of the original Aswan Dam had, to increasingly destructive levels, flooded Nubian settlements on the Egyptian side of the Nubian border. These settlements were located alongside the many ancient ruins located in the region, which were also increasingly submerged. Eventually receiving some compensation from the Egyptian government, Nubia’s population were forced to move their homes higher up the Nile’s banks, and many Nubians moved to Cairo and Alexandria to work in domestic service. Meanwhile, Egypt’s antiquities service launched two archaeological surveys directed by colonial officials that sought to record ancient sites before they were flooded.

This process, I argue, made it much easier to separate an ancient Nubian past from the region’s present: one dominated by a territorially novel kingdom of Egypt whose permanence was extrapolated backwards in time.

Accordingly, as Egypt and Sudan signed the Nile Waters Agreement of 1959 and confirmed the impending construction of the High Dam, that process precipitated a continuation of earlier archaeological work [...]. Simultaneously, separate “ethnological” surveys either side of the newly hardened Egyptian-Sudanese border prepared for the relocation of the now-separated Nubian population to new, government-planned settlements elsewhere (the Egyptian survey was supported by the Ford Foundation and based at the American University in Cairo; the Sudanese one was supported by the Sudan Antiquities Service).

Even in the face of Nubian demonstrations -- particularly strong in Wadi Halfa in the very north of Sudan -- this forced, state-backed process of migration made the job of archaeological survey easier, constituting further representations of the desolate desert dotted by ancient monuments that earlier work had made possible.

That those monuments -- and that “desert” -- clearly had a far more complex history was a fact elided by most involved.

To a great extent, too, that elision continues, even as the Nubian diaspora has in recent years become much more vocal about its plight. [...]

[T]here is no doubt that the Nubian campaign, and the Nubian archaeological surveys before it, affected tens of thousands of lives for the worse. [...] I would hope that Flooded Pasts enjoys a readership beyond the academic, not least because issues around heritage -- what it is, who has a say in it, how its governance operates -- have become so salient in the last few years [...]. The man expressed confusion at the scene he had caused at first, but fled without his "pet" as cyclist police arrived in the area. He was caught and arrested three miles away and similar devices on his person were confiscated for safety and study. Animal control services have also apprehended the gator and will relocate it far away from human settlements.

Myrrdin, of true Sunjatta

Humans and standard mages are generally located here in the capital city, Camlothe, or in the surrounding villages/towns (Cutwater, Bywater, Stillwater, Blackwater, and Myrris). The people here are arrogant and prideful, flawed and distrustful of any not their own (though, specifically, the elves). The kingdom is led by a descendent of Merlin himself, King Myrrlin XXVII, who has a curiosity and love for magic despite the decline of its use or public interest in it. It is his interest alone that keeps Myrrdinian wizards and mages employed, despite there being a number of services in the capital that only wizards and mages can fulfill. The kingdom is heavily fortified and plentiful in population, though there is a great plain ( Malefactor's March ) between the capitol and the Chimerian border; Camlothe's sister city, Myrris, serves to keep the legions of undead, Myhala, and all other evils at bay. Most warriors, bandits, sellswords, barbarians, Wildlings, and master alchemists you'll see on the East Road hail from Myrrdin. Likewise, most criminals relocated to Kírât also hail from Myrrdin ( as well as Kavasta, the Diremark, and some select smaller nations ).

The architecture is largely... whimsigothic in nature, though it is much brighter. White and gold are the main colors seen throughout the capital, but the impossibly massive royal castle on the cliffs observing Zuri ( Merlin's Landing ) is made all the more noticeable with the additions of vermillion and deep purple. The capital city is well-guarded and would not fall to a full-on invasion of enemy forces for quite some time. Every man, woman, and child is encouraged to take up arms and eventually venture out into the rest of the Myrrdinian lands - it is a deeply valued tradition, as the experience is extremely important when applied in times of war. Hunting and orc slaying are considered noble tasks. So much so that even an outsider ( Arda Störmhammer, a wizened dwarven battlemaster ) has been awarded the title of Orcslayer of Myrrdin.

While the people are generally considered arrogant and prideful, they are also hopeful and steadfast, capable of withstanding incredible hardship and intense warfare. Camlothe is much more culturally open than it seems, having long-established trade agreements and treaties with Nuradan, Zuri, Nilmyrion, Mange Figi, Askarra, Scarburn, Nouxfret, Kavasta, Adamant, Luvia, and even the Watchers of Haagrífön in the Black Eyrie of Chimeria; The people of Myrris are more weathered, stubborn, and adventurous than their Camlothi counterparts, if a bit distrustful.

Myrrdin is, however, slow on its roll in regarding the warnings of the King's court wizard. No one alive today in Myrrdin knows of the great evil that was defeated two Ages prior, nor can they fathom its return. Their ignorance is deeply uncharacteristic, but this can be attributed to many thousands of years of relative peace in Myrrdinian lands. Conflicts with the Wildlings, beastfolk, vampires of Strigane, among others are relatively few in number when considering history as a whole; However, there have been a handful of great wars between the Descendants of Merlin (the ruling house) and a handful of other great houses in the Malefactor's March and at the borders of the capital city. The scars of such wars can still be seen to this day.

In Myyrdin, there is a vast, empty, and deathly plain stained with putrid death and scarred by war unceasing. Rot and despair plague these lands so haunted by legions of the dead, once dotted by numerous settlements belonging to the Upper Houses (the aristocracy), that which lies between between the Fortified City to the South and the outpost hub, Dragon's Watch, at the. Little else but the shambling remnants of their fallen kin remain, accompanied by the blackhearted, monstrous brutes who align themselves with the Fallen Queen Vaadynî, the Death Knell of Sunjatta. Together, they continue to slowly burn away at the edges of the March, leaving behind mountains of bodies and rivers of blood, where naught but ash and embers fall and the light of the Bright-Burning Star cannot cut through the smoke.

Even and especially now, the Death Knell’s armies coupled with the legions of the fallen undead and Myhalas choke what life still remains in the March, spreading like a terrible poison as they scatter in all directions. They make their ways in dedicated factions toward the borders of the western-most points of both the Diremark and the Dustveil as well, inching ever closer toward the great walls of Myrris and, by proxy, Camlothe; Were it not for the towering cliff-faces of the easterly Raven’s Spine or its razor-sharp labyrinth of blackstone pathways, the combined efforts of the Allied City in Zuri, Emûn Kethelín, or the Fhal'Tir and Chimerian Lightguard at the entrances to the Chimerian Deep, so, too, would these great and terrible armies have begun to pour into the valleys between the mountains and wreak unfathomable devastation. For now, despite their unceasing march, the Death Knell’s forces and the undead company they keep are barred from the central expanse of Myrrdin, but such unwavering guard is not promised to continue and, perhaps sooner than any would readily admit, it may one day fail.

And when that day should come, the skies will shade the world in inescapable blackness and rain down upon them all ash and flame.

It was not always this way. In fact, Malefactor’s March was once known as the March of the Golden, favored by the Fírrimídr (the gods at the beginning and end of the world, though chiefly Ímídr - gods shared with the Fhal'Tir). Endless fields of Goldleaf and Silver Foil bloomed here when the sun would set on the eastern horizon, accompanied by buds of complimentary petta blossoms and the ethereal glow of Ímdíra’s Breath; The soil was rich and dense in necessary nutrients for the cultivation of a great many alchemical ingredients and, likewise, grain crops and more. The Upper Houses expanded their territories out of Myrris into the March, encouraging their constituents to homestead or form settlements all throughout, effectively building Myrrdin's economy and achieving for them all unprecedented prosperity. The people thrived, often joining in Myrris and the capital for seasonal festivals. Frea was founded in the foothils of the Tri-Raven’s Spine to the northwest to mark the final reaches of Myrrdinian borders, but it, too, swelled with traffic and unexpected growth, and it served as a cultural melting pot where the Elves, Dwarves, Ágrifön, and other beastfolk could share their crafts and hunting spoils.

But, toward the end of the Second Era, when peace in Sunjatta was at its peak, a secret war raged on between the Éimadra and the ancient horrors lurking beneath Sunjatta's surface (in the sprawling underground territory of what is now known as Myhalas).

June 14 is the Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Communist Repression in Estonia

In Lithuania, this date is called the Day of Sorrow and Hope, in Latvia – the Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Communist Terror, in Estonia – the Day of Mourning.

On June 14, 1941, mass deportations began in the Baltic States. In mid-May 1941, the People's Commissar of Internal Affairs of the USSR, Lavrenty Beria, agreed with Stalin on a draft resolution of the SNK and the Central Committee of the CPSU (b) "On measures to cleanse the Lithuanian SSR of anti-Soviet, criminal and socially dangerous elements" (at the stage of approval, Latvian and Estonian were added to the Lithuanian SSR).

Former members of various nationalist parties, policemen, gendarmes, landlords, manufacturers, high-ranking officials, officers and criminals conducting anti-Soviet activities and used by foreign intelligence services for espionage purposes were subject to resettlement. Such people had to be arrested, their property confiscated and sent to camps for a period of five to eight years, followed by settlement for 20 years in remote areas of the USSR. Their family members (except criminals), as well as family members of those who were sentenced to capital punishment or escaped from justice and moved to an illegal position, would have been waiting for them there.

On June 14, 1941, a forced relocation operation began in Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia. 17.5 thousand people from Lithuania were deported to the Novosibirsk region, Kazakhstan and Komi ASSR, about 17 thousand people from Latvia – to the Krasnoyarsk Territory and Novosibirsk region, as well as to the Karaganda region of Kazakhstan, about six thousand people from Estonia – to the Kirov and Novosibirsk regions.

After the end of the war, repressive policies, including forced relocations, intensified again in 1947 and noticeably intensified in 1948. In total, in 1940-1953, more than 203 thousand people were sent from the Baltic States to special settlement, including 118599 people from Lithuania, 52541 people from Latvia and 32540 people from Estonia.

In Armenia, June 14 is also honored by victims of communist repression, but this day was called more politically correct there - the Day of Protection of the Rights of Innocent Convicts. This memorable date appeared in Armenia on the initiative of the Dashnaktsutyun party in memory of those repressed during the Soviet era.
