3.1 Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía
Tumblr media
My time here in Spain has gone by much faster than I had anticipated, the month here is nearly up and I feel like I’ve only just begun. My time has been mainly consumed by museums, palaces and cathedrals; the majority of which constructed before my grandparents were even born. Today, however, there was a very welcome change in scenery as you’ll see below.
vimeo
On Monday our professor took us to the Reina Sofía National Center of Art Museum which feels and looks far ahead of its time. Although part of the building was historically a hospital, nowadays it’s a museum that specializes in XX century art. The ultra-futuristic design of this museum simply left me speechless. The red roof in particular struck me, with strategic rectangles taken out of it which allowed for light to shine through, giving it an open and inviting ambiance. Although Madrid is one of the most modern cities in both Spain and Europe, I found out from the class reading that it was not the city that initially led the cultural renaissance at the turn of the XX century, rather the Catalans of Barcelona.

There is a plethora of curious works in this museum, the first being an unassuming sign right outside the entrance. Our professor explained that it was a nod to the unique nature of the museum itself, as everything on the sign aside from “laissez toutes” (coming from French, which could be translated as “let/leave all”) is in essence gibberish; as is the museum. Although the sign is designed to look like it gives direction when in reality it only leaves you more confused. As I entered the museum I only found more quizzical works that elicited the same confusion in me and my fellow classmates.
Tumblr media
One of the most intriguing things I found on the inside was this larger-than-life metronome with an eye on the pendulum, which seemed random for this museum but I suppose it’s one of those places in which anything goes. It was almost as if to make you feel that time was staring right back at you, ticking back and forth endlessly, dwindling away helplessly. I feel like the meaning behind this work could be a visual metaphor of carpe diem, a gentle but slightly unsettling reminder that time will never stop. In the room directly to the right of the metronome I found more works by Picasso. It was after our reading and in this museum that I began to understand Picasso’s works in a more holistic sense. The reading described him as a stylistic polyglot, as he navigates among traditional styles of painting and his well-known boxier, misshapen style. It’s truly been a remarkable experience to see many of his diverse works throughout the museums we’ve visited throughout this trip.
Tumblr media
As we worked our way up to the fourth and final floor I found a sculpture of a cow, pig and lamb on the terrace. Although I appreciate the fantastical nature of the unicorn horns on the three animals, I still don’t quite understand it. This sculpture marks the various cuts of meat that can be obtained from these animals and the percentage of the cut of meat that can be derived from animal. Definitely not a vegetarian/vegan-friendly sculpture, but interesting nonetheless!
