fatal frame has to be one of the best japanese horror games, it came in 2001 i believe and i think it really shaped the j-horror genre (especially games, chillas art for example is a modern japanese version of the old grainy ps2 horror vibe with the same type of camera set up.) its unique (for the time) storyline and play style as well as the visual look really appeals to me. i enjoy the old haunted culty mansion/town trope, and the fact the game doesn’t use jumpscares to scare you, but rather the ambience and visual designs of its ghosts, which have good attention to detail for their creepiness.

for what this game lacks in visual quality it definitely makes up for in sound design, from the creaks of the doors, and the ambience to the small slow whispers. it’s just a beautifully made game and last but not least the puzzles, they’re not too easy that you don’t have to put effort but not so hard they’re actually frustrating, which is a really important factor, also, i’ve noticed the games tend to get more creepy/eerie as they go on and i think that’s cooler than just having it be 100% from the get-go. it also helps you and gives you clues without completely holding your hand throughout the game.
alright enough glazing, thanks for listening to my rant!
