hi! can i ask what's ur opinion on giving pets away? not necessarily because u can't afford to care for em anymore but maybe incompatibility of personalities or maybe lifestyles. is it wrong to give ur pet for adoption if u know someone who's better suited for keeping a pet, like emotionally?
This is going to be controversial, but I support making that choice.
There’s a lot of rhetoric lately around how it’s evil and unethical to rehome your pet if you don’t “need to.” And what that does is prioritize human ideology over the actual animal’s well-being.
Pets that aren’t a good match for your home or pets that aren’t really wanted anymore frequently have lower welfare! When caring for an animal becomes a burden or is forced, people end up resenting them, and that means the animal often doesn’t get all of its needs fulfilled. Even if you’re still feeding it and providing appropriate vet care, how likely are you to provide affection or enrichment to an animal you’re tired of being stuck with?
Lifestyle and personality really matter to making sure a pet is a good fit for a home. A dog that alert-barks at every leaf that moves is probably a bad fit for someone who has a chronic migraine syndrome, and they might not know that until the dog has been in the home for weeks and started to open up. A really feisty kitten that requires a ton of play might not do best in the home of someone older who wanted a quiet lap cat. And while you can you do your best to plan to find a compatible animal, you won’t always know ahead of time what issues might arise.
“Forever home” rhetoric is really, really popular and I think it’s very unfair to the animals it is supposed to support. It started with the backlash of seeing animals abandoned inappropriately, and has been heavily reinforced in the public mind because it’s so frequently used to drive fundraising and support for legislation. The whole “forever home” concept communicates to people that getting an animal is an immutable commitment and that if you can’t keep an animal, it is a personal moral failing. It frames human priorities (we think people who get rid of animals are Evil and Bad and should be shunned) as more important than actual welfare needs for individual animals (are they getting the care they need where they are).
Obviously, I don’t support people dumping animals or just getting fad pets they’ll discard immediately, but there’s so many alternate situations that can arise. Even if it’s just “they got a pet and didn’t know what caring for it would take and didn’t want to care for it so they brought it back, how awful” like… okay, I’d like the person to have done more research before they got a pet, but isn’t it better that the animal now has a second chance to go to better home? Knowing what a commitment requires theoretically can be very different than having to actually follow through regularly, and I’d rather see someone maturely acknowledge that having an animal isn’t a good fit than keep it anyway!!
If animals being happy and with all their biological, veterinary, and social needs fulfilled is actually the goal, we need to prioritize their welfare over human opinion. I’d much rather see an animal rehomed responsibly to somewhere it will thrive and be welcomed than see people keep animals they can’t/don’t want to care for out of guilt or shame.
#pets#rehoming animals#animal ethics#animal welfare#there is obviously a lot of nuance to each situation but overall I want pets to be in places that are a good fit#even if that means it isn't where they started out

the babies!!!!
the white thing on one of them are external gills. they are born with them but loose them within a few hours-days.
they are kept in little baby jail for now because they need to be able to easily reach the surface to breath but can't do so in the big tank. this way i can also keep a closer eye on their growth and food intake!
#obligatory info that you shouldn't keep animals in small unfiltered tanks#i will do daily water changes until they are big enough to move into a filtered 54l/14gal tank#in 6 months they are either ready to be rehomed or move in with the adults#i'll keep any girls but the boys might get to move out

man it never ceases to be annoying to me the way that people will act like taking in a wandering animal is Stealing Someone's Lost(?) Pet Omg I Bet They Have A Chip, You Obviously Didn't Check, as if people don't literally drive out here SPECIFICALLY to dump animals
#it happens more on the outskirts of town but literally. someone could throw a cat out of a moving car and someone will be like#hey!! you can't rehome that animal! what if their owner is looking for them!#ma'am I promise nobody is looking.#sergle.txt#also AS IF PEOPLE IN RURAL OKLAHOMA CHIP THEIR PETS....#you'd be hard pressed to even find a collar on an actually lost animal. let alone a tag or a chip that you can get scanned

please share! kittens from southwest idaho need homes!
(check the blog for photos & updates on who's been adopted!)
these kittens were initially from a colony in canyon county, idaho. unfortunately the local humane society is unable to take in cats outside of emergencies like illness or serious injuries, so we've been bringing in kittens & doing what we can to find them all homes -- we've had about 20 kittens in and out of our house since spring!
at the moment, none of them have been vaccinated, chipped, or fixed. they were all given OTC dewormer a month ago and have been checked for fleas and ticks. they all seem happy, healthy, and active.
i don't know their exact ages, but i've done my best to approximate. clicking on the links should take you to their tag on this blog so you can see their photos.
otacon, male, ~4 months. a teeny tiny sweetheart. he doesn't seem to enjoy being pet as much as the other cats, but he LOVES cuddling -- you'll have to keep an eye on him, because he will absolutely try to climb you so he can sit on your shoulder.
solid snake, male, ~4 months. an adorable purr and a BIG personality! he needs to learn how to keep his claws to himself while playing, but he's incredibly tolerant of being handled -- his only gripe about getting his nails trimmed is that he can't play with the clippers. loves blankets. loves to be under blankets. loves to attack the unsuspecting from under blankets.
marble cake, male, ~6 months. VERY chatty, very affectionate, and very underfoot! he is OBSESSED with being pet & will follow me around meowing insistently & trying to lay down on my feet until ive given him enough attention.
taco tuesday, female, ~6 months. this lovely lady was much older than the others when we finally managed to catch her, & is VERY nervous around new people. she loves treats, affection, all of the other cats, & curling up at the foot of the bed to sleep. her favorite place to be pet is right at the base of her tail. please be aware that it is possible that she is pregnant.
capillary action (aka captain) male, ~7 months. will not let you forget he's in charge. he will follow you around the house and scream until you fulfill whatever demand he may have. this can be anything from petting to getting a little treat, but his favorite is a little piece of cheesestick. he will do anything for a cheesestick. unfortunately for him, he's on a diet. (this cat is being fostered by another family member, so information & photos are a bit lacking, sorry!)
rehoming fee is $30. ada & canyon county are the most convenient places to meet, but we can travel a bit outside of that if it means these kittens are going to the right home. if you or anyone you know lives nearby & would like to take in a new kitten, please message me so we can talk! i want to do absolutely everything in my power to make sure that these cats are placed with people who will love them as much as i do.

So I've reached this point of desperation.
I'm moving out of state soon, and I have a cat and 2 rats that I can't take with me. I've tried to find homes for them among people I know, without luck. I've contacted every rescue within reasonable distance, and either they don't respond or they don't have space. I've posted ads on adoption sites. No luck there, either.
So that brings me here.
The rats are both male, 6 or 7 months old at a guess. They're curious with people, and friendly if a little shy. The problem is They're overly dominant with each other, so I've had to keep them separated. I think getting one or both of them neutered would fix the problem though.
The cat is a 4 year old female. Spayed, litter trained, and has had her shots though they're not up to date. She's extremely friendly with people, but she doesn't like other cats.
If anyone in our around Michigan would be able to help, please contact me. I really don't want to have to take them to a shelter
#cat#cats#rat#rats#rehoming help#animals in need#we can help with vaccines and neutering if needed#and I can include all the rats stuff

The article posted by the Cut concerning Lucky the cat is honestly disturbing to read. The apathy in which the author describes her treatment of her innocent pet, the casualty in which she jokes about hoping her cat dies (“call it voluntary catslaughter”), the halfhearted conclusion stating simply that she’ll “shut the window” is all very unsettling.
Yes, the author is clearly suffering from PPD. I hope sincerely that she can seek help and that she and her infant can thrive. However, while PPD is an explanation, it does not make the environment any less unsafe for Lucky. No living animal deserves the conditions Lucky has been subjected to. She deserves a loving home with owners who take care of her health and safety.
It is deeply disappointing that The Cut has not stepped to address the situation and work to help remove the cat from an abusive and neglectful situation. It’s just as disappointing that they have been actively avoiding the situation, limiting comments, blocking individuals who have spoken publicly, and largely ignoring the public backlash.
I encourage you to visit the Instagram account lucilleherescuecat who has covered this story closely and has compiled a list of resources to help advocate for lucky, including an email template and list of individuals to reach out to at nycmag. Additionally, you can sign the petition at change .org calling for the Cut to provide an actual update on the condition of Lucky.
I hope that the original author of the article will do the humane thing and allow her cat to be rehomed for the health and safety of everyone involved.
Shown beneath the cut is the original article, which is currently behind a paywall. TW; animal cruelty and neglect
#Massive news outlets take even a little bit of accountability for anything challenge#Tw animal abuse#tw animal cruelty#Lucky the cat#animals#cats#animal welfare#the cut#save lucky the cat#I’m sure the author is exhausted and depressed. She also needs to rehome her cat.#There are people willing to take her. Willing to go pick her up no questions asked#I just hope that the author does the right thing and allow her cat to be rehomed

One of the hardest things about trying to downsize and maintain boundaries about the number of critters in my house is that I don’t notice a difference in my stress level or workload until several enclosures are emptied, and I’m constantly getting more intake requests… It’s hard to say no to animals that really need help, and adding just one more enclosure doesn’t make much of a difference until I’m several enclosures past where I would ideally like to be… and then I’m stressed out of my mind.
Luckily the last week or two we’ve had very few intake requests, and I have two enclosures worth of animals leaving shortly for adoptions and new foster homes.
Anyways, for the next few weeks or months I am waitlisting everything non-urgent unless I have a foster available that isn’t me, and even urgent cases I am trying to get into other foster homes rather than mine.
I’m trying to spend more time advertising available animals and especially to get animals who have been waiting a long time adopted… And trying to rearrange and streamline things and just make everything less work.
Unfortunately there’s just never enough space or time or money for all the animals who need it.
#obligatory disclaimer none of my forever pets are being rehomed#i am just trying to get more critters into other foster homes and preferably adoptive homes#and as my seniors pass i am not getting more forever animals for the foreseeable future

this is the SILLIEST creature in the whole world. I wish i could keep him somehow but alas. Eddie really does look nothing like a rooster at 20 weeks and I was sure his odd squawking crow or two was just a fluke. But Eddie is definitely a cockerel and was very displeased and threatened by this extremely threatening looking creature existing nearby his ladies. Matildo's s in the dog crate in the house for the night and then going back home tomorrow.
#its just SO FUNNY he really gives it his all#don't name your chickens boy names friends#they will be the most trans chickens of all time#matildo#unfortunately i've realized i now have crippling anxiety reactions to rehoming animals#even though this was on a trial basis and my sister knew he might not work out

URGENTLY SEEKING PEOPLE WILLING TO ADOPT/FOSTER A CAT IN LOUISVILLE KENTUCKY.
https://www.adoptapet.com/pet/40984939-louisville-kentucky-cat
Hello everyone, I am urgently seeking someone who can adopt or foster a can for me. It turns out that my partner and I are violating the by-laws by having two cats, and the only option for us is to either rehome our new cat to a new home or foster, or surrender her to the shelter.
I love this cat. I do not want to surrender her to the shelter. I want her to live a happy life, not one locked away in a shelter forever.
I need a response as quickly as possible. If you're interested, please DM me or go on the listing. I want the best for her.

Hi guys! Recently I've joined this NGO called Pawzz which helps stray animals and gets them loving homes and medical treatments! It is 100% non profit and works on a donation based system! It would be very nice if you were able to donate a bit to us for the eye surgery of one of our dogs, Shona. If not, I'd be very glad if you reblogged this post to help spread the message!
Every penny counts, so we'd be glad with whatever donation you give, no matter how small or insignificant! If interested, DM me and I'd explain the details to you; and if you do donate, I'd very much appreciate it if you provide me a screenshot of the payment which I can forward to Pawzz!
Thankyou!

So uh... This is Dash (short for Dashboard because I had to fish him out of mine when he escaped his purrito in my car). Picked him up off the side of the interstate on my way home from work this morning. Little stinker really gave me a run for my money, but I couldn't just leave him when I saw this tiny creature terrified on the side of the road.
He's currently quarantining in the bathtub. I'm going to let him settle in for the night and try to give him a cleanup/bath tomorrow because he's filthy. He already has a vet appointment scheduled for Monday morning.
Send good vibes that we can foster for a while and find him a decent (indoor) home. We really just can't do a fourth cat right now. At least, not permanently.
#my last Cat Distribution System acquisition (aka Lucy) is 11#i've never taken an animal in with the intention of rehoming so this is going to be an experience#but i already told Bean we're not keeping him just taking care of him until we can make sure he's healthy and then finding a home for him

(So. Today has been awful and is only going to get worse before it gets better. I've been staring at my laptop screen for the better part of an hour, unable to muster up the will to work on anything, be it drafts here or new fanfic or my original stories. Gonna try something else as a means of engaging my brain without getting stressed over trying to genuinely be creative...)
#behind the curtain#no deaths or injuries or anything truly dire#but this is the last day we have to try and rehome our cats#before a legal deadline#and whoever we can't will need to be surrendered to the county animal shelter#which I despise to the very depths of my soul#couldn't sleep more than three hours last night#and I've already sobbed twice#just. not coping well right now
