Been thinking about Golden Kamuy and all the people who are kinda pissed or disappointed Sugimoto didn't die and my two cents about it are:
1) It's not really about him. His purpose is to be an ignorant fuck so that the audience has a reason to learn about the ainu, and follow Asirpa along as she explains and guides us through their world and their struggles. If Sugimoto dies then it does become about him, and that defeats the purpose. We're not supposed to mourn the likeable young man left adrift by the war who tragically died in pursuit of a higher purpose. We're supposed to empatize with the fight of the native people fighting for the right to their very existence
2) Sugimoto's purpose is to be Asirpa's bodyguard, and that means he HAS to be immortal, because the world construed in GK is one where violence has very real consecuences. The teenage girl facing against war veterans and violent ex convicts, as the sole key to obtaining unimaginable riches, would NOT have a happy ending in that world unless she had a protector that broke the laws of the universe
2.1) The alternative would be that Asirpa somehow be able to protect herself and that would mean SHE became an unrealistically cool, capable, unkillable character, which also defeats the purpose. GK presents the Ainu with respect to their culture and their struggles. It does not present them as an over-romanticized version of themselves with barely any resemblance to the real people they actually are in exchange for cool points. They're not there to be an exotic and exiting new kind of shonen fighter. Sugimoto is the one shouldering the weight of unrealistic action sequences so that Asirpa can be a more accurate representation of realistic human beings with human problems and limitations
So basically, however much I like him, I think Sugimoto is less a human being than he is a plot device. Which coincidentally also builds up on his feelings of dehumanization due to what he went through on the war and his immortality itself

Gonna be honest, "and an old salty yank for a captain" makes a lot more sense than the "and an old salty egg for a captain" that I'd been mishearing the lyric as

Honestly my reaction to the Tumblr AI thing is that I actively do not care.
The tumblr user base has made it abundantly clear that it will continue using tumblr regardless of any shitty decisions it makes, that it refuses to consider any other options, and it will actively harass anyone who tries to build any better options. Why should I feel any sympathy for a crab bucket?

How do you talk about "proship" stuff without immediately getting bombarded with hate and dismissed as a terrible person?
I'm on your side, but it seems most people are not, and not willing to listen at all.
I wanna make some small things clear lol I am not the spokesperson for this topic. There are far more people who are more articulate and have done more research and I would rather just be drawing lol
I usually state that if you're not a great speaker or can't articulate yourself very well, link to the experts that understand how this stuff works. Like I've said before, a lot of the therapists and articles I have linked have done a better job than I on the topic. Because you might be actually hurting your case when you're trying to explain to someone these things and you are either hung up on the trees over the forest or can't explain something because they catch you on a minute detail.
That being said, the main advice I would give is to not to use these loaded terms themselves, just the dynamic itself. In all honesty, if you use that kind of terminology (proship/anti), it usually turns people's brains off and makes them think you're weird automatically.
youtube
I would just point out that there's a wide range of different types of stories (from tv shows to myths of yore) that have spanned centuries--even some of which featuring taboos. And the ills of society do not have these stories to blame.
I am tired, because when I think we've moved on from these rehashed arguments and stupid discourse about media , I come to find arguments that were settled ten years ago are rearing their heads again. And this time they're coming with threats!
They did this with D&D and rock music. (You would be lured into satanic rituals and be deviants) They did this was violent movies and video games (You would want to commit murders or want murderers to go free) They did with this with rap and music videos (You would be hypnotized into violence by the artist and you would want to be a harlot) They did this with anime (Foreign media that is super weird and turn people into super freaks) They did this was queer media (Gonna turn you gay) They did this with superheroes (Children will think they can fly, they think punching will solve their problems)
Now this type of persecution comes for people that are doing taboo fanworks. I am tired of seeing this shit. Hindsight is free--those who were young for these old campaigns can see this stuff clearly for what it is: veiled right-wing rhetoric that is easily adopted by useful idiots who believe they are "helping". This time, the main push has been from young people in fandom spaces.
This is how it works.
All art communicates worldviews to some extent, but that doesn't make everything propaganda. Artists aren't working to eliminate other worldviews or stifle the existence of other artists--that is actually what propaganda is. It often comes from a perspective that embraces the imperialist or patriarchal status quo.
To someone on the fence who might be reading this: art is subjective. Your need to moralize what you consume is fraught. Consuming "good" media made with "good morals" and not "taboo" doesn't make you live a good life or become a good person. You're going to hit a wall one of these days where something you enjoy will be seen as something gross/repulsive/troubling and when you have been cut off from all those who would have defended you, you will have no one around you. If you feel like you are constantly put under a magnifying glass by said friends over what you ship, what art you enjoy.... Its not healthy! When you can't unfollow or say how you truly feel in a group of people and feel "unsafe" if you were to leave…. THAT'S A CULT. I find that it's always the same people who start shit that will be repeating this behaviour wherever they go. They literally act like HOAs but instead of your halloween ornaments staying up for too long, they are saying you can't enjoy your Greek God incest fics.
One last thing to remember: if you're having this conversation, and a person takes the worst possible light from what you say…they are not trying to have a conversation with you, they are acting against you.

hiya!! I have been reading your posts and reblogs about facial differences and it was making me wonder
is giving your villain ocs scars inherently a bad thing?? I have a massively unsympathetic (literally pure evil) villain who has a lot of scars cuz of the battles he fought and I want to be tasteful cuz even tho hes a villain who loves being evil i want the fact that he has scars to be important but I don't wanna seem like hes evil because he has them (mostly cuz he is tons of actions that make him a monster)
hope to get your feedback soon!! and i love your art!! thank you
hi! thank you for the ask and compliment ahh!
i'd really want anyone to avoid giving their villain characters any facial differences at all. is it nice that the disabled villain is evil because of reasons *other* than their disability? sure, it's something a little different! but it always ends up rehashing the same old tired trope of scarred = evil, no matter how many writing or in-universe excuses are given. people will always take away that fact from your character, and other disabled people will come to the conclusion that that's what you think of us.
visible disability has become a visual/storytelling shorthand to indicate that someone's evil or has been through a lot, and that translates into real life biases and discrimination
i *personally* am distasteful of scars being used a storytelling device, though this opinion probably differs between different people with FDs. there's never any characters who have facial differences from an accident that happened to them when they were young, or because they had a stroke, or because they were just born with them! it's always from a really intense battle or event and it creates the assumption that all scars are from like war veterans or something. not to say that you can't have acquired FD from violent events, but it's just too saturated in media right now!
so, i'm not saying to get rid of the battling aspect of his character, but maybe giving him scars because of them isn't the best idea. i mean, plenty of hero characters end up physically unscathed and Pretty As Ever from even the most life-threatening of events (which says a lot of things in of itself) so it's not like it's ridiculous or something.
literally all of our FD rep is of villains, vigilantes, or pathetic, incapable people, and i'm honestly so tired of seeing the same villain thing written over and over again. so like, at this point in society where i can count all the good FD representation on one hand? i'd really rather see a protagonist or Good Guy Character be visually disabled instead!
(especially since you mentioned that your character is "pure evil" and "massively unsympathetic" i don't think that helps portray us in a good light)
maybe the protag has bilateral strabismus, or their partner has burn scars from a work accident, or the retail worker side character has neurofibramatosis! IDK. i just think there's a ton more interesting and infinitely better options for visually disabled characters that actually *do good* rather than pulling the same scarred villain character design again.
i'm not great at articulating myself and i'm still learning more about facial differences every day, so i apologize if any of this was unorganized or unclear haha. i probably missed a lot of stuff, so please continue to do more research as well!! it makes me really happy that you reached out to me in the first place :D i hope this helped!

I am gonna make an effort to draw more Nova and Pluto stuff this year since they've been missing in action for far too long and their designs are finally at a spot I'm happy with.
I figured the best way to go about this is redraw some of their greatest hits with their new fleshed out designs and personalities.
This comic may just look like a rehash of Sweetheart and Bitterbat's but the original of this one actually came first!
Original under cut because my 2021 art stings me
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ah, old art style...I did not miss lookin' at ya' one bit.
I switched up the dialogue a lot because Nova ain't the ditzy little catgirl I wrote her to be all those years ago. Girl ain't taking shit from anybody, ESPECIALLY some giant alien cyborg hitman.

Thinking about Paul’s “Robert Meant Freedom” comment in relation to his thingy with John:
John needed to possess and be possessed in order to feel secure, and in the early years, Paul’s ambition seems to have fit well within these parameters.
We see examples of this idea in Paul’s apparent determination to win John over (e.g., his extensive preparations for their meeting at the fête); in his rivalry with Stu; in his begrudging submission to John’s unkind—if not outright cruel—treatment in Hamburg for the sake of living and playing together; and most notably, in his aspirations to make music professionally, very specifically with John at his side.
That last bit seems particularly meaningful, and is made evident by the delivery and coil winding gigs Paul took in the winter of ‘60/‘61. He returned from Hamburg with his tail between his legs, and, rather than continue to devote himself to music, took on a couple of uninspired jobs. He was still playing regular shows with the Beatles, but regardless, a “real job” was an abrupt departure from his agenda of the previous years. It was only John’s ultimatum that pulled Paul back in. Even more than the music itself, John was the actual prerequisite for his devotion (“and in the end he chose me”).
I’m sure it goes without saying that the compulsion to create music is a central driving force in Paul’s life, and his musical identity is impossible to untangle from John. That 64-year-old anecdote still speaks volumes, and Paul continues to rehash the same sentiment all these years later. (Kill me!)
I’ve gotten a bit sidetracked, but anyway, relationships like these are passionate but overwhelming. The constant emotional effort they require CAN provide a certain sense of purpose but is very fucking exhausting. Paul met Robert during a period of time when his world was rapidly expanding, and within that world Robert presented an opportunity to explore passion and life separately from John and the intensity of their partnership. Robert served as a symbol of autonomy, self-definition, and art beyond entanglement.
Paul could never really be free from Lennon-McCartney, but I think it’s likely that Robert Fraser exemplified that he was allowed to be more than just one half of a pair.
Of course, this very sentiment would slowly erode the fragile sense of security between J+P and ultimately contribute to their undoing, but I don’t feel like thinking about THAT at all :-)

Spy x Family miscellaneous collab scans - part 12
Here's the last batch of scans from the SxF Jump Festa merch I bought - a 5-piece set of bromide cards, featuring the Forgers baking 🍰
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also wanted to mention, for those of you who remember the SxF workbooks I made scans of last year, new ones are going to be released this year too 😃 Two are coming out on May 26th and another in early July. Of course I'm planning to get them and make scans! I love the chibi artwork, plus they're great supplements my Japanese studies. Hopefully these workbooks will have a lot of new art and won't rehash too much of the old ones.

i use tiktok mostly just to post my own edits and see my mutuals stuff now bc im sick of the fandom on there. most of them clearly watched the show with their head up their ass or smth because they’re manage to come up with the most simultaneously hilarious and horrible takes ever.
also because not a single one of them can take bertholdt’s character seriously without rehashing the exact same name jokes i’ve heard since i joined the fandom in 2021. like sure some are funny but it gets so old so quickly, and when you make a post actually going into his character and being a bit more serious the comments are just “poor [some word beginning with b]” like PLEASE SHUT UP FOR A MOMENT!!!
literally had to put in the caption of one of my bert videos “stfu about his name for once” bc i knew the kind of comments i’d receive if i didn’t.
this fandom rather completely forgets his character (who is extremely important to the plot and towards the entire character of reiner but that’s a whole other thing), hates him for what he did even tho they love reiner/annie, or they treat him like a joke and never bother to go past surface level with his character.
he is the most interesting warrior imo because he was the first to openly admit and see that all the fighting was stupid and pointless. that the paradis eldians were no different from him and him killing them wasn’t personal, it was what had to be done to save his father. there’s alot more to him but im worried this will become like 3k words if i dont stop but most of the fandom can’t even comprehend that its actually ridiculous.
people treat him like absolute shit because he died first and he was weak when firstly shut the fuck up?? he was not weak in the slightest and had the most powerful titan ability bar the actual fucking founding titan. like oh my god. and other people say “oh he was too attached to reiner” dog that’s the point. of his character. oh my god.
idk i think im just sick of the fandom treating him like this. he and connie are imo the most overlooked characters in the entire animanga.
and don’t even get me started on how shit both him and connie are treated in official arts and stuff bc. wow
