James received the news a week later.

He received a letter from his owl from an unknown person but he felt a sense of deja vu.

His eyes traveled the paper fast like he knew what he was looking for. Then the four words that he read next pushed him in the guts.

Regulus Black is dead

He didn’t know how to react, he was alone at home, Lily outside with some friends.

He didn’t even know if he had the right to react. He didn't feel the tears and only noticed them when they wet the paper.

Regulus Black was, is, dead.

His Reggie. No he couldn’t say that. He didn’t have this privilege anymore.

He figured that was his punishment, losing the love of his life. Not have been able to love him like he deserved.

He was being selfish. Regulus died and he was thinking of his feelings. Then it hit. Sirius came to his mind, he thought of how he didn’t talk to Regulus before leaving Hogwarts. And that now the brothers would never be able to see each other anymore. They would never be able to bond again.

He wanted to vomit, he was feeling sick. Sick because of losing Regulus. Sick because of thinking of him that way when he has Lily. Sick because he’ll never be able to hold his hands again. What if Regulus died thinking everyone hated him. James couldn’t bare the thought of it.

He continued reading the letter. But his eyes were so blurry he didn’t even know what he was reading anymore.

Regulus, dead, drowned, Voldemort, Horcruxes, good person.

He stopped reading that, he didn’t need to know anything else. He knew Regulus was a good person, he didn’t want to think of him dead. The sick feeling came back. Regulus was plotting all this alone. Alone, he went there alone and he faced all this alone

James doesn’t remember what happened next. Only Lily coming home and putting him to bed, feeling sick, repeating that Regulus was dead.

“He’s dead, I'm sorry. I'm so sorry Lily”

“I know, I know.”
