Okay. Something I want to propose. Let the 55 and 4 fans hate on Charles as much as they want. Don't defend, don't try to snark back. This is clearly therapeutic to them, so just let them. Remember, people have ragged on Max before for being 'whiny' and 'selfish' as well. Don't fight it. Let it happen. Let them have their fun and let them go on their way to Williams.
Keep in mind who was the youngest ferrari pole sitter and race winner. Remember who out qualified the Sebastian Vettel both years in which they were teammates (This is not a jab at Seb. He's a 4 time champ, I'm fully aware. I'm specifically talking about when they were in Ferrari.)
Remember who was the first Ferrari driver since 2010 to win Monza, and who won it again this year starting from p4 against the fastest cars on the grid pulling off a fantastic one stopper and one of the drives of the season. Remember the driver who has consistently outperformed all the shitty cars and strategies he's been given throughout all these years.
Remember the driver that always gives Max Verstappen a fight regardless of said shitty cars he's been given. Remember the driver who again won in Austin from p4 even though his teammate started from P3.
Remember the driver that used to always accept the shit thrown at him by his team with grace though he could've gone apeshit on them for their pure blunders at times. I know I would have.
Remember the driver who is the darling of the tifosi. Who has been undyingly and unfailingly loyal to the red team and the red dream, who has said he only wants a championship if it is with Ferrari. And now understand why he was the driver Ferrari wanted to keep.
Don't let twitter make you bitter (I swear I didn't mean for that to rhyme, but i guess it makes sense). Charles is an exceptional driver, he lives and breathes this team. Always has and always will. And we will be right there with him.
Now keep calm, be smart and don't give into rage bait no matter how much you want to, click away and move on. Remember, they're leaving anyway. They're not worth you energy. Not anymore.

after spending an evening listening to jessie gender tell me about starfield, capitalism, gender, selfhood, and ursula k leguin, i had. some Thoughts about another science fiction series; one you're probably at least somewhat familiar with if you follow this blog or watch ms gender's videos.
to start off; hey. this is partially based on my own experiences, my understanding of them, and how that lens can be applied to star trek. it's also very much inspired by the work of jessie earl, whose channel i can't recommend enough. she's funny, intelligent, kind, and an incredibly gifted writer, and she's a gift to both the star trek, trans, and "video essay youtuber" communities. show her some love!
that said, i want to start by looking at star trek. we all know the vulcans, don't we? pointy ears, green blood â spock's dad's side of the family. gifted with telepathic abilities, vulcans are practitioners of the mind meld, also called things like a mind link, probe, touch, or fusion, which is exactly what it sounds like. it allows two (or more, on occasion) sentient life forms to exchange thoughts as though they were one being.
of course, this kind of thing is common in media. steven universe has gem fusions, which should be examined from a plural viewpoint in their own right. x-man charles xavier almost routinely delves into the minds of others. but rarely does it have any lasting impact on the characters. even star trek itself falls into this, with doctor leonard mccoy not getting nearly enough screentime in the voyage home to show off what must have been the intensely strange experience of carrying spock's katra within him. (maybe that's addressed in a novelization or comic that i'm just unaware of, but regardless, i haven't seen it, and i think that's a travesty. (and if you know of a book where that gets touched on oh my god give me the fucking link now-))
there are instances of star trek mind melds having lasting effects, as discovery shows part of sarek's katra being permanently linked to michael burnham, though that could be considered an extenuating circumstance, what with her being on death's doorstep at the time of the meld. which most trek fans probably already know, and is honestly more fantastical than i care to bother reading with a plural lens. however, star trek is a fandom with nearly sixty years of history, including hundreds of books and comics from various authors and publishers. these stories are plentiful, bizzare, and sometimes outright terribly written. i don't blame anyone for not having read them all â to do so seems like a terrifying task.
but the one i want to look at right now is a particular run of the star trek: the next generation comic, published in 2000 by wildstorm comics.
the run is called perchance to dream â a lovely, flourishing name for a comic where half of the plot could be it's very own jessie gender video for how much sexual weirdness goes on (but i'll leave that to the professionals). the part we're going to focus on is that the b-plot of the run surrounds captain jean luc picard, captain of the uss enterprise-d. the comic is set after the events of the star trek: the next generation season 3 premiere, best of both worlds: part 2. in that episode, the captain had been disconnected from the borg hivemind (after being assimilated in part 1), and he returned to duty as usual at the end of the episode (though he does choose to go on leave in the following episode). it's also set after another episode from later on in season 3, â episode 23, sarek, wherein picard preformed a mind meld with sarek in order to allow the aging ambassador better emotional control, as it was being ravaged by his bendii syndrome â essentially, vulcan dementia.
the a-plot of the run isn't really important to us, i'm afraid â although it reveals to us in the second issue that worf accidentally killed a kid on another soccer team as a child. suffice to say, one of the abilities of the aliens the crew has to play diplomacy with is that they can prod into people's traumas through their nightmares. they have a lot going on. it's a comic book from 2000, what did you expect?
and, speaking of things that are easily dated, the third issue of the run brings us to the second part of today's topic.
image id: a comic book page. beginning at the top, a narration box reads: "chief medical officer's log, stardate 48503.8. lieutenant commander data, doctor selar, and i have gone through the damiano [alien] records regarding the chova. while no direct way to combat the weapon was ever developed we have discovered that certain people were immune to the chova's effects and could destroy the weapon." doctor beverly crusher is beside the narration box, depicted from the shoulders up, facing slightly to the right and saying "there has to be another way." a vulcan -- doctor selar -- is viewed from the waist up, holding a padd in her right hand and facing to the right of the page. she is saying "we have been over the records six times a piece, doctor. if there is anything to find, it is likely that we would have found it by now." data, an android designed to appear as a human with pale yellow plastic skin, is holding a book slightly behind doctor selar. his mouth is slightly open as he speaks. "i believe doctor selar is correct. this is the only course of action open to us under the circumstances." to the right of this panel is another shot of beverly from the shoulders up, this time facing to the left. her expression is stern as she says "i know, i know, it's just-- it could kill him." in the next panel. beverly is shown from the back, and captain jean-luc picard enters, saying "you sent for me, doctor?" beverly responds, "yes, jean-luc. please sit down." below this, the left panel takes most of the remaining page. this time we see captain picard from the back, while beverly faces the reader head-on, speaking first. "we've gone through the records chief du're [irrelevant one-off character from the a-plot] provided. it turns out that there was one group of people who were immune to the chova when it was first used. mpd's." jean-luc repeats "mpd's?" curiously. to the right, data is shown from the shoulders up, saying; "mpd stands for multiple personality disorder. mpd can come about through psycholo--" but beverly interrupts him; "not now, data." end id.
ah, multiple personality disorder. a term that hasn't been clinically used since 1994. these days, we call this dissociative identity disorder (did), but it's one dissociative disorder of many, which is what beverly is talking about. for whatever reason, people with this sort of dissociative plurality seem to be immune to the specific trauma nightmares induced by these aliens. (finally, some good news.)
okay, neat! so, dissociative disorders and plurality have been canonically addressed in star trek. let's see how it goes!
image id also available unbroken in alt text. image id pt 1: beginning in the top left corner, beverly is shown from the shoulders up, facing the right side of the page as she speaks. "the point is the people who are afflicted with more than one personality would destroy the chova before it could affect them. the chova was only built for one personality. mpds would literally overwhelm it." in the next panel, to the right, picard is shown from the chest up, partially obstructed by speech bubbles. facing right, he asks; "how does this help us?" beverly is also in this right panel, although from behind, and nearly completely obfuscated by speech bubbles. she answers; "well, mpd was never a common occurance, and it's almost unheard of these days.there've only been two cases reported in the federation in the last two hundred years -- and damiano [the alien planet] hasn't seen a case in the last fifty."beverly continues. "however, we do have someone on the enterprise who has the makings of a classic mpd. i'd like your permission to ask this person to volunteer to undergo a mind-meld with doctor selar in order to bring the submerged personalities to the fore."
this particular line, i take umbrage with, as dissociative disorders are a lot more common than people might think, and star trek has shown us a future as tumultuous as our own present for decades. there would absolutely be people experiencing some level of multiplicity in everyday life both within the federation and without. but, again, this was written in the 90s, i think? i don't know how long it takes a team of professionals to make a comic book. but, i digress.
image id pt 2: picard responds; "permission granted, as long as it remains on a volunteer basis. who is the officer in question?" below, the leftmost panel is larger than the right. beverly crusher is shown in profile, facing right, with doctor selar and data behind her from the chest and shoulders up. picard is on the right of the page, slightly smaller, but also in profile, facing right to contrast beverly as he listens to her speak. "it's someone who's been exposed to an especially intense vulcan mind-meld, who lived another life for thirty-five subjective yearsâ and who had a second personality grafted onto his own for a brief period by the borg. the next panel takes the entire width of the page, and much of the height. picard is shown in the middle, standing in a purple void. around him are three other male characters shown in bust. from left to right, they are; kamin, a humanoid man bearing great resemblance to an older imagining of jean-luc picard, wearing a plain blue shirt. sarek, a vulcan with grey hair, a turquoise shirt, and a green stone amulet on a large gold chain around his neck. he is cast in shadow and his eyes are not visible. locutus, an ashen version of jean-luc picard, with about a third of his face obscured by black metal exoplating and implants that surround his right eye. tubes come off of his face and neck, trailing behind him, and a red light made to shine at his point of focus shines from the side of his head. there are several yellow narration boxes, which read as follows. "sarek of vulcan. picard mind-melded with the legendary ambassador in order to lend him strength for an important negotiation â an act that almost cost picard his sanity." "kamin of kataan. a probe sent out by kataan before their sun went nova allowed picard to live most of kamin's adult life as a way to remember his people."
oh, yeah. did... did i not mention that that happened?
basically, he was targeted by a device that beamed him into the world's most immersive vr game â kind of like the one from rick and morty? if you watched that? if you didn't, sorry for bringing it up, and if you did, ditto. but it forced picard to live out an entire life as though he'd been abducted by aliens and placed in a sims game. though, ultimately, the plot intricacies of the inner light are beside my point.
image id pt 3: "locutus of borg. quite simply, the greatest nightmare of picard's entire life. the subversion of his intellect, his will, his very self to the collective of the borg." "all three are part of him, but they do not dominate. if picard does as doctor crusher suggests, he will subsume himself in order to let the others come to the fore. for sarek, for kamin, he would be willing." "but locutus--?" the next panel takes a little more than half of the remainder of the page. a narration box in the upper left reads; "then he thinks of his first officer, counselor, chief of security, chief engineer, and all the others who have fallen victim to this vicious weapon." the rest of the panel shows two sleeping figures, both humanoid, in what is presumably sickbay. the last panel takes the remainder. a narration box in the upper left reads; "and jean-luc picard makes the only decision he is capable of making." captain picard is shown from the shoulders up, facing slightly to the left and saying; "what do i need to do?" below his speech bubble is another yellow text box, which reads "to be concluded..."
...which is how issue 3 leaves us.
fortunately, we can pick up in issue 4 with ease, since these comics are over twenty years old. i'm going to do my best to limit my use of comic pages, juuuuust in case, but once we reach the sixth page, with the credits...
image id: a two-page spread. beginning in the uppermost left corner, narration boxes read; "welcome to the mind of jean-luc picard." "'locutus' was a personality superimposed upon picard when he was taken by the borg, meant to serve as the spokesperson for that cybernetic race's ruthless assimilation of what they described as the 'authority-driven culture' of the federation." "ambassador sarek of vulcan suffered from bendii syndrome. in order to keep the effects of this devastating illness from endangering his final mission, sarek entered into a deep mind-meld with picard in order to give the ambassador emotional control and stability." "kamin was a prominent member of the community of ressik on the long-dead world of kataan. a probe sent by the kataan people allowed picard to live kamin's life for several subjective decades, although less than half an hour passed in reality." "all of these personalities have made up a part of jean-luc picard, but he remained dominant." "until now." "this is the mind of jean-luc picard." the left page is mostly taken up by a large illustration of locutus, drawn in far more detail than before. trailing off to the right are two tubes or wires, as well as a speech bubble that reads "resistance is futile." also on this page are the details of the comic title, run, issue number, writers/artists, and copyright. taking up most of the right half of the right page is sarek of vulcan, drawn in less detail than locutus, but easily recognizable. his hair is a lighter grey, he is wearing white and cream robes and an amber amulet on a thick gold ring around his neck, and he is holding up his right hand in a vulcan salute/ta'al. depicted below sarek is kamin, drawn from the shoulders up, wearing a plain white shirt with a collar. below kamin is captain picard, also shown from the shoulders up, in his starfleet uniform, and surrounded by four lights, with two on either side of him. (there is also further copyright information beside him in fine print.)
...i'm pretty sure that this analysis falls under the "commentary" part of fair use. right?
but, regardless, this is kind of a huge thing to drop in a comic that virtually no one has bothered to read. i mean, especially when, amidst the clashing of picard's plurality with the a-plot, we get this panel;
image id: a single comic panel. kamin is shown from behind, speaking to locutus and sarek within a noneuclidean space with four circular white lights shining in the distance. "what is going on?" kamin asks. "we have been subdued for too long. but now we shall dominate, as we were meant to." locutus replies. sarek interrupts. "your logic is flawed, locutus. we are all merely aspects of jean-luc picard's mind." "you may be sarek of vulcan, but we are of the borg."
sarek is able to acknowledge himself, kamin, and locutus as "aspects" of captain picard, despite picard rarely if ever sensing them or their influence. picard is being, not just implied, but explicitly stated to have a latent form of plurality, and perchance to dream depicts it in a way that strikes true to members of my own system, at times, with certain alters first making themselves known in the front already well aware of who they are, and having existed without the my knowledge due to dissociative barriers that only came down later in life.
unfortunately, because this is a star trek media, locutus ends up assimilating kamin in the headspace and forcing himself into the front. however, as he does it, he says something that does, to an extent, resonate with the experience of being one among many, for better or worse.
image id: a single comic panel. locutus is shown facing the viewer, and his chin and the top of his head are cut off by the borders of the panel. his light breaks the plane of the panel to simulate the effect that it is shining into the "camera." locutus's mouth is open as he speaks; "for too long you have suppressed us, picard. but you are of the borg."
plurality is a defense mechanism by the brain to protect against trauma. it is, from what i have seen, more common among those who are already neurodivergent, which already presents in a myriad of ways. mixing the ugly truth of trauma with the raw reality of mental illness caused by it can result in certain alters feeling as though they are being suppressed by not being allowed to front and live their own life, depending on how the system functions. admittedly it is more common in fictional depictions of dissociative disorders for these alters to simply live their own lives in secret anyway, as is the case in the marvel tv series moon knight with marc spector, steven grant, and jake lockley (along with the other possible members of their system who may or may not be present depending on the canon, but those are the main three). but, in reality â or at least my experience â this more often translates to alters making themselves social media accounts, or using services like tupperbox or pluralkit on discord, or finding other ways to more discretely express themselves, such as icon changes or status updates.
but, getting back to star trek, this is ultimately a one-off comic. so captain picard saves the day with his secret alters, ends the mind meld with doctor selar, and goes back to living his life as a singlet, ready for the people of the future to be able to easily comprehend without having to read a very specific comic run from 2000.
...right?
image id: part of a comic page. each panel takes up roughly one quarter of the page each. in the first panel, counselor deanna troi is seen standing, having just entered captain picard's ready room. picard is shown from the back, sitting at his desk. "counselor! good to see you up and about." he greets her. "it's good to be up and about." she responds. "playing some old tunes?" [picard had been playing the ressikan flute prior to her entry.] picard responds. "mmm. i wanted to make sure that i still remembered how." in the next panel, we look over counselor troi's shoulder and across the desk at captain picard. "were you worried that you wouldn't?" she wonders. "actually, yes," picard answers. "after what happened..." the third panel shows picard facing the viewer head-on from the shoulders up. he continues, "i suppose i knew intellectually how close to the surface locutus, sarek, and kamin were. but i never really thought about it. they were â memories, experiences. no different from any other. but they're much more than that." the fourth panel shows counselor troi, facing slightly to the right as she speaks. "not much more. all three of them are part of you. but the important word is you. the fragmentation was artificially induced." picard asks; "was it?"
ultimately, yes, this is a one-off comic run that isn't very well known, and i only read because i took a personal interest in the subject matter. i knew going in that it wasn't going to fundamentally change the entire fandom's understanding of captain picard, or make the star trek fandom an instant haven for systems everywhere. but, still, captain picard has his doubts, and that truly touched me when i first read it as someone who was actively reckoning with the fact that past traumas that had impacted me more than i realized.
the comic goes on for a while longer, but the last thing it has to say on the subject of plurality is this.
image id: a single comic panel. counselor troi is seated in one of the chairs in captain picard's ready room, facing him from across his desk. she is on the left, facing partially right, and he is on the right, in profile facing left. the dialogue reads as follows. picard wonders, "was it [the dissociative fragmentation of his identity] truly a creation of the mind-meld, or was it simply breaking a dam that was already cracked?" riker interrupts over the comm. "riker to picard." "go ahead, number one," picard tells him. "it's time to beam down to damiano for the ceremony, sir." "thank you, commander."
and that's it. picard asks a question, then gets called away and never tells us his answer.
i think, at least subconsciously, that might be part of why i held star trek: picard to such a high standard.
to be clear, i hadn't read this comic when the first season of picard was coming out. but i was starting to grapple with my plurality, and i used fictional media as a means to do that (as is still evidenced by things like my system simon tag). the first season of the show was centered around both picard's relationship with both his legacy and his history with the borg collective. as mentioned in perchance to dream, captain picard had previously been assimilated by the borg collective â a cybernetic hivemind from the delta quadrant that absorbed cultures and species into itself, effectively wiping out the cultural histories of entire planets, at times, in their quest to become the "perfect" life form through a combination of genetic engineering and mechanical augmentation. and, as this happened, i came to know a young man named hugh who took form within my mind. a fictional introject, or fictive, of the character of the same name from season 5, episode 23, i, borg. with his help, i grew to further understand my own plurality, and saw the potential for our stories to be told in the wake of reclamations from the borg collective. the reclamation project became a hyperfixation, andâ
and then came the jurati collective.
my own system bears no connection to the jurati collective, but it is a wonder, and can be examined through a plural lens as an allegory for our own experiences as dissociatives. many consciousnesses, all working together as one towards a common goal, and willingly. after all, what is a system if not a hive within one body?
and then came picard's third season, completely ignoring her, along with all the unique perspectives that stories surrounding her might have offered in favor of what felt like a final next generation movie.
ignoring me, it felt like.
is that silly? probably. but, try as i might, i am human, and so i have a propensity for illogic â no matter how much my autistic brain craves structure and definitive explanations in order to understand the world.
i'll be honest, i'm not sure how to end this. but, sometimes i remember the time in season 6, episode 20, the chase, when picard became incredibly excited about an ancient alien society that believed people were, indeed, collectives within themselves.
"...the kurlan civilisation believed that an individual was a community of individuals. inside us are many voices, each with its own desires, its own style, its own view of the world." -captain jean-luc picard
and i realize that, with the core tenant of this series lying in the infinite diversity of both the known and the unknowable â the building blocks are already in place. star trek is a media that has grown over the decades, and hopefully will continue to do so, because there are still so many ways for new and interesting and meaningful stories to be told within this franchise.
but, if you can't summon your representation from a nostalgiabait sequel/reboot within a preexisting intellectual property... there's nothing to stop you from crafting your own story and letting loose as many systems as you like.
#shut up emrys#star trek#star trek tng#star trek the next generation#the next generation#jean luc picard#captain picard#multiplicity#plurality#actually multiple#actually plural#first time using those tags. whoogh#uhhh. unsure of other tags..#i think thatâll do tbh

hi aries!! been a while since i've seen you on my feed so thought i'd just ask how are you, how are you feeling about this weekend, the triple header etc
unfortunately it has not been kind to my drivers at all :( lewis at the back in the usa, then oscar at the back in mexico so i'm hoping that all goes well for charles because he's the last one that hasn't fallen victim yet to an awful quali đ
omg hi anon!!! iâve missed talking to everyone so this message made my day!!!
iâm doing okay, trying my best to get back into the writing groove because iâve had the WORST writerâs block for months now and i want to get back to posting đ
so far things have been better than worse for me during this triple headerâ charles leading a 1-2 and winning in austin and then our 1-3 last weekend (that shouldâve been another 1-2 but i digress) was amazing as well.
i have to be honest, i am low key dreading this weekend. weâre at that point in the season where every single point REALLY counts, and now that ferrari has moved into second place in the WCC and charles is still in contention for the WDC (so long as he scores a certain amount of points in every race) iâm beyond stressed. especially because last i checked the weather isnât looking too great and iâm having flashbacks to our double DNF in canada đ«
i couldnât believe what happened to lewis in austin!!! my jaw literally dropped when he DNFâd. and oscarâs Q1 exit had me SHOCKED, but at this point heâs in a completely different car than lando because he has yet to receive the upgrades. that and he was a victim of track limits đ he might be getting them this weekend though so weâll see what happens!
i too am hoping for fantastic results for charles (and ferrari) because thatâs my ride or die fr. iâm also hoping for another great performance from franco; he has truly entranced me in the short time heâs been on the grid and now i fear iâm in love with him.
regardless of what happens, i will be watching everything with my heart in my throat đđ

Danielle Verboski Realtor
Immediately surrounding Mystic is comprised of the bigger Connecticut communities of Groton and Stonington.
The shipyards at Mystic, Connecticut have been in operation for about 130 years, and in that time they have constructed more than 600 sailing vessels. The initial residents arrived in the region that would subsequently become the city around the year 1784. Mystic, Connecticut is a town that is still very new, having been founded in 1784. A key component of the prosperous business community in Mystic, Connecticut is the town's prime waterfront location realtors in mystic ct At Mystic Seaport, American museum-goers have the opportunity to view the world-famous whaling ship Charles W. Morgan. The primary objective was to determine the type of spacecraft it was. The hotel has experienced major modifications within the past few decades. As the longest river in the United States, the Mystic is a great place to begin your cross-country skiing journey. Those waterways eventually flow into the Atlantic Ocean not far from the confluence of the Mystic River and Fishers Island Sound. Instead of emptying into the ocean, the Mystic River empties into Long Island Sound. Ships can cross the Mystic River, which connects the two continents, using a bascule bridge. Distance and time did not create an endless chasm that separated us. The term "missi-tuk" originally meant "river whose currents are churned up into waves by the tides or the wind." "Old English" today denotes the language in its most primitive form. Throughout history, the word "mystic" has been linked to a wide range of concepts and worldviews. This particular river type was often described as "mystic" in ancient texts. A bad connotation has developed around the word "mystic" throughout the years. The obsolete meaning of the word "mystic" was different from its modern one. The word "mystic" seems to have a wide range of possible meanings these days. There are 4,205 people living there right now.

So letâs be fair, that was the experience of being a life long F1 fan all rolled into one race!
That was heartbreaking for Charles. That should never happen to any driver. He deserved better. Shame on you Ferrari.
Max was imperious today. That was a solid drive start to finish. It is so easy to throw it all away and he didnât. We are seeing someone believe he can win this unfold in front of our eyes.
Carlos, who would have thought it would be him getting Ferrariâs first podium of the season? Again canât fault him. I think to have his old McLaren friends beside his new team must reassure him heâs doing something right.
Lando, what can we say, 50 laps trying to avoid a penalty and 20 trying to hold on to his podium position. That boy earned his podium today. As a fan was it fun to watch? Erm no.
Seb, well we know the car doesnât have the pace so to finish 5th is outstanding. A deserved Driver of the Day. Pair that with the bold strategy of Stroll and a well deserved double points finish for the team.
Gio, he has been on the pace and up the top end of the field all weekend. That may get over looked because of other events but again deserved his points. Is there anything better than seeing someone for a lower team have a fantastic weekend?
Lewis, it is what it is. Tough to take for his fans but a momentary blip. Any other track he would have made up the places.
Valtteri should be gutted. I donât think I have ever seen anyone retire from a race like that. That was almost as heartbreaking as Charles.
Daniel. I almost couldnât watch Lando pass him. I know this is only temporary, there is something in the DNA of the McLaren that just doesnât work for Daniel. Itâs no reflection on him as a driver. It just hurts to see.
Was the race interesting to watch? No it was dull as ****
In conclusion, F1 is never fair, itâs heartbreaking, boring and stressful to watch at times and at some point you will want to throw something at your telly. The highs are great, the lows are gut wrenching. Itâs ok to congratulate other drivers that do well and be disappointed for others regardless of who you follow.

Hi I have a question I was curious what you thought about the episodes about Jack the Ripper episodes 3-6? And about the anime season 1 and 2 and the other series? Thank you for answering the question
Dear Anon,
In general I am not quite positive about any animated rendition of âKuroshitsujiâ, so if youâre interested in reading my mostly negative opinion, please proceed ^^
TL:DR
Season 1 - Ep. 3-6 - Personal rating: 2/10
Season 1 General - Personal rating: 3/10
Season 2 - Personal rating: N.A.
Book of Circus - Personal rating: 8/10Â
Book of Murder - Personal rating: 8/10Â
Book of the Atlantic - Personal rating 6.5/10
Season 1 - Episodes 3 - 6
Personal rating: 2/10
I personally despise the anime version of the Jack the Ripper arc because of multiple reasons.
1. The manga portrayal of Grell in that arc wasnât great to begin with, but it was the anime that ultimately caused many people to believe Grell is a psychopathic gay, crossdressing man. The heavily gay-coded visuals (both manga and anime) alone of course were already pointing to Grell being a flamboyant male, but the additional gay-coded voice to her may have been what delivered the ultimate blow. Because anime is voiced, it often leaves a more lasting impression on people.
2. itâs not just for Grellâs portrayal. I also despised how the anime basically signal-boosted the corset scene that presented the sexualisation of a 12 year old as something that is part of a serious murder investigation. And when the sexual tension was later denied by showing âit was just a corsetâ, it was supposed to be âa comedic teaseâ rather than a major sigh of relief.
Yes, it was just the faithful portrayal of canon. I am not saying the manga is less guilty; I am saying that the anime signal-boosted these two very harmful things without explicit warning.
Season 1 in General
Personal rating: 3/10
The good things:
In general the first season did have some fairly nice parts, hence the marginally higher personal rating. I quite liked the scene where anime!Sebastian shoved the visitor into the oven (+1pt) , for example. And I also liked the adaptation of the mini arc where O!Ciel was kidnapped by the mafia. (+1pt)
The finale makes little sense, but I did like the charm and atmosphere it delivered. I understood that the 24 episode series had to deviate from the canon storyline in order to tell a whole story within so few episodes.
The season finale managed to bring an ending that befits the theme of âKuroshtisujiâ: a suitably dark, ominous conclusion of a demon receiving the payment for his part of the contract. The choice of only showing Sebastian closing in on his prey from 1st person perspective before the screen blacking out was fantastic. It really reminded me as a viewer that in the end, I am but a helpless human; that regardless of what we may think Sebastian is, the last weâll see of him is him being a predator to his prey. (+1pt)
The⊠not so good things.
Curry bread shuriken? (-1pt) The child king and prince arc? (-1pt) Pluto? (-1pt) **Angela/Ash!? (-2pt) The reaper library? (-1 pt. What was it even trying to achieve?). Ruining the most epic revelation of our protagonistâs arch enemy and spoiling the manga!?!?!?! (-1pt)
**They wanted to portray the genderlessness of angels, and so they decided toâŠ. make this angel bi-gender in the loosest sense of the word? And then there is the EXPLICIT intention of giving Angela small breasts⊠because she canât be âtoo much of a womanâ (their actual words). PSA to women with small breasts!! Hear that!? Youâre not too much of a woman!!
The rest is self explanatory.
Season 2 in General
Personal rating: N.A.
I deny its existence. If this season had existed, I would have said it took everything I hated about season 1, amplified them multi-fold, and⊠shoved all of those ingredients into a worse context. It ruined the significance of the S1 finale, and shoehorned âreasssssonsssâ to insert the new characters.
Also⊠apparently a contract now is as binding as a pinky swear between toddlers?
Also, Iâd like to add how even both voice actors of the two demons hated it.
Ono Daisuke (Sebastian) was asked for his opinion of season 2, and he said that: âeven I, Sebastian, learned of new sides of this character that I never expected to seeâ. Sakurai Takahiro (Claude) in turn, was asked why he thought they cast him for this role, to which he replied: âbecause he wears glasses, just like me. I think itâs called the glasses-casting-method.â
Book of Circus
Personal rating: 8/10
The animation itself felt quite static, but it was nice to finally see something animated almost perfectly faithfully to canon. The voice actors poured in so much more life and passion, and the cinematic record of Joker was very powerful.
Book of Murder
Personal rating: 8/10
I liked it, and the soundtrack chosen for these OVAs were great and fitted the theme perfectly. The animation, just like BoC, was quite static, but otherwise it is faithful to canon and represented the atmosphere quite well. First when Jeremy was introduced in the manga, many people really had no clue that he was Sebastian; the result of theories flying around in the fandom was quite nice.
In the anime, because Jeremyâs eyes were red, and because Ono Daisuke has a rather distinct voice, it was almost an instant giveaway to people who didnât read the manga. But itâs fine. Ono Daisuke pulled everything out of his sleeve, and it was charming.
The French. I loved hating it. I donât think I could have done a better job, but I loved hating it. French speakers out there, what did you think? ( ÂŽèžïœ)
Book of Atlantic
Personal rating: 6.5/10
I actually didnât like it a lot, even though I went to the cinema for it THRICE!(ÏçœïŒŸ)Ïâââ!!
The good things:
Even though I didnât really like the addition of the Double Charles, I did like love how they inserted a burn by Sebas at Greyâs expense. I think it was a wonderful re-introduction of Trash Demonâą being the salty prick he is, and how it tied back to the events of BoM.
The soundtrack designed for the movie was also great in my opinion, and the scene where Lizzie revealed herself was very touching. Me and many in the cinema were sobbing like babies, and the times that I went with people who donât read the manga were also great, because they shock on their faces was ART.
Finally, I really liked how they concluded the story with everyone on the rescue ship. It really gave this very nice feeling of the survival of a big adventure.
The bad things:
The number 1 sin has to be how they trimmed Sebastianâs cinematic record, even though that is easily the biggest highlight of the Campania Arc. HOW COULD THEY!? ăœ(`ĐÂŽđą)ïŸ
The second thing is the ATROCIOUS animation. For the anime I understand why it would have limited budget, but the movie though? The movie was marketed SO big! some city buses in the city where I lived at the time wore the BotA skin! All Animates were PLASTERED with commercial for the movie⊠and then⊠this â. I think EVERYONE agreed the CGI was jarring at least, and turned something so threatening into something nobody could take seriously.
This â was not necessarily bad animation, just a very dubious choice that I personally find quite tacky.
The third thing is - like I said before - the insertion of Double Charles who didnât seem to add anything to the story. The time that went to their screentime could much better be spent on Sebasâ cinematic record.
Welp, that was all! Thank you for reading my rant!!! What did you guys think of the animated adaptations?

What you need to know to run a card gaming tournament!
Hey everyone!
In case you didnât know me, Iâm Charles Butlerâalso known as TaxiCAB in the Level 99 Games online community. For the past 2 weeks, Iâve been running the largest Exceed tournament of all time, Matchup Madness, clocking in at 95 competitors! With the group phase of our tournament having just ended, I thought I would tune in and help some of the players at home looking to organize your own tournaments!
When running a tournament, the first thing I always ask myself is âWhat is the ultimate goal of this tournament?â For Matchup Madness, that goal was to bring the community together and to give newer community members the resources they need to grow and thrive.Â
The groups (or as we call them âpoolsâ) phase of the tournament was designed to help introduce players to both veterans in the community and each other, letting them form connections and get advice from some of the more skilled players.Â
After being introduced, the bracket stage is a great follow-up as people cheer on their favorites and learn from the greatest as they throw down. But not every tournament should have this goal: sometimes youâll want something quick and easy to run with friends and have fun on the weekend, maybe you want something like a spectator sportâdesigned to keep excitement running high and have things shakeup at any momentâor you might even want a âthemedâ tournament that brings people out of their comfort zone!
Bracketeering
Once you have a goal in mind, youâll want to make sure you pick the style of bracket that best fits what you want to do. Most people know the common ones, but Iâll share my insight into the pros and cons of what styles Iâve come across.
Round-Robin
Is the ideal competitive format. Every player gets to face each of their competitors, so no one can be put at a disadvantage by facing against the favorite to win round 1. Unfortunately, round-robin falters because of the amount of time it requires, especially in tournaments that have a sizable number of participants. With a tournament like Matchup Madness, doing round-robin would take approximately 9 and a half months, which means at our rate of 1 round every 3 days, we wouldnât finish until early 2021âyikes. Even with a smaller group like 8 people, it would take you 7 rounds to finish, so make sure you know youâll have the time if you want to run this format.
Single-Elimination
The most well-known format out there. Itâs easy to run, gets to the point, and gives everyone just one shot to give it their allâmaking every match important and exciting. However, it often comes under a lot of criticism as a competitive format, just one mistake or misplay means that your run is over, which can create a lot of stress. Additionally, being placed into a match with a stronger player often means you donât get a chance to show what you can do, and means you canât play any more matches until the tournament is over. If you need something quick, single-elimination is great! Otherwise, consider one of the other formats as it will often give your players a better experience.
Double-Elimination
Extremely similar to Single-elimination, but gives each player one more chance before they are knocked out. When participants lose they are sent into a separate âlosers bracketâ where they fight for their chance to have a shot against the champion. This means that not only do players get a second chanceâbut that second chance will be against someone in a similar situation, making it great for newer contenders to meet each other and find a practice buddy. Double-elimination does take a few more rounds than single and is complex to bracket correctly. So if you need it done quickly or donât have access to an online bracket manager like Challonge (https://challonge.com/) you may want to consider something else.
Swiss
Probably the most popular format for weekly events. and great for tournaments where you want to let people find new friends around their skill level. In the Swiss format, each player gets to play in every round and is matched against a player with the same win-loss record as them, so players who lose the first match will get paired with each other. As far as time goes, itâs an extremely flexible format as you can set the number of rounds to whatever fits in your schedule. What swiss doesnât excel at, however, is determining a true âwinnerâ. Often, in swiss, multiple competitors will end the tournament with the same record, so there is no single champion. If having that champion is important to you, consider one of the elimination formats instead.
Gauntlet
A bit of a weird format that thrives on the spectator experience. Used by many TV game shows like Family Feud, and more casually by fighting game players, gauntlet runs only a single match at a timeâletting the winner stay in, and the loser be rotated out. Prizing for this style of tournament often scales with your win-streak, or is decided by the last man standing. For a truly competitive event, this format is horrible, as coming in early puts you at an overwhelming disadvantage. As a spectator sport, or weekly streamed feature, this format can excel at creating exciting narratives and sowing chaos as players quickly rotate in and out.
Making Fun Formats
Once youâve decided on your style of bracket, itâs time to decide what ruleset you want to run for your group. The sky is the limit with themes and challenges you can come up with, so make your mark!
Allowing just a specific season is great for release events and giving players random characters can force them out of their comfort zone. Putting aesthetic themes like âHalloweenâ, âWearing Whiteâ, or even âFinal Destination, No items, Hats onlyâ can also be great for exploring new matchups while still giving people some control over what they want to play, just make sure that everyone knows the rules before the event.
If you want to run a more competitive event, running with the standard âBring 3, Pick 1â organized play format is a solid bet. In my local scene, we also added a ban into the mix so that players could be forced off their mains, and be encouraged to develop multiple characters.
In a similar vein, Matchup Madness is running a format called âSemi-Conquestâ which is a spinoff of Hearthstoneâs Conquest format that requires you to only win with 2 of your decks instead of all 3âwhich forces players into playing a variety of matchups.
Tools of the Trade
Running a tournamentâespecially a larger oneâcan quickly become an overwhelming ordeal. Luckily, TOs (Tournament Organizers) have a slew of tools at their disposal to help things run smoothly and make their job a little bit easier.
Challonge
(https://challonge.com/) - The most popular, and completely free, bracket managing website out there. It is absolutely essential to any would-be TOs. The software allows you to create and run most types of brackets, trivializing the process of setting up Swiss or Double-Elimination tournaments. Unfortunately, Challonge isnât great for communicating with players, so running the tournament off of a forum, or discord is your best bet to put up announcements and updates as your event progresses.
Google Drive
(https://drive.google.com) - Speaking of communication, Google Drive is also a fantastic way to communicate with your players, especially for longer announcements or rulesets that you want people to be easily able to reference back to, like this one: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1n7ydfrl5YNvAfYv-xe2uQCMZamSNghWB7NA4CeQ6Rus/edit.
Google Sheets in specific is a powerful tool that lets you compile and analyze data from larger events.
For Matchup Madness, Iâve used it to record character win rates, let people see their fellow competitorâs roster, and keep a feed of every match as it's reported. You can check it out here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1A5W60hMQ8YMZcArc8pWY2XarqqWPR_ry97XQH9OEy2U/edit?usp=sharing.
Discord
(https://discordapp.com/) - Is my personal favorite way to quickly message and interact with my friends and community members. Its rise in popularity in the gaming sphere means that many of you already use itâbut there are a few tricks you can do to make it work for you as a TO.
Every user has something called a âReal IDâ that lets you quickly find and tag them regardless of if they share the same username as someone else, have it in a different language, or even if they keep changing their tag. Mine is 163739706863910912. To access it, you first need to turn Developer Mode on in your settings, under the âAppearanceâ tab. Then you can right-click any user to âCopy IDâ and get their ID string. Group DMs are another powerful way to put players in contact with each other, although you will need to make sure you add them to your friend list before you can put the message channel together.
Iâm looking forward to seeing how Matchup Madness ends, and to starting up a more casual weekly event on the discord as we prepare for the next big one. So stay tuned and make sure to join the Level 99 Games community discord at https://discord.gg/KQtrkGc if you havenât already! If you have any ideas for formats you would like to see run or want any advice for setting up a tournament with your friends, feel free to contact me on discord at TaxiCAB#6036. I donât bite, and always love to help out!

There have been a few indications that IF the White Sox were to buy before this seasonâs deadline, they will not be going all out for the big names like Bumgarner, Greinke, or Stroman. With that said, here is a list of three players the Sox might have a shot at acquiring at a low cost.
Aaron Sanchez
Sanchez hasnât had the best season (5.53 FIP, 0.2 fWAR). However, he does have a shot at improving. He has bounced back and forth between the minors, Injured List and MLB over the last couple seasons and only has one Arbitration season on his contract for 2020, which I do not see much of an increasing salary (currently $3.9 million), if he doesnât turn things around. It depends what you need to give up to acquire him, but heâs a guy to keep in mind. Heâs only 27, so he could be worth it.
Daniel Norris
Norris is having a decent season (4.62 FIP, 1.1 fWAR), and heâs only 26. The Tigers are bad. That rotation is young, but if they donât plan on competing for a couple years, Norris could be on the way out. Itâs worth the inquiry if the Tigers are willing to part with him.
Mike Leake
Leake is the most expensive option. Heâs making $16 million this year, $15 million in 2020, and $18 million in 2021. It obviously depends on how much money the Mariners are willing to eat in a hypothetical trade, but he owns a 4.89 FIP and is currently worth 0.9 fWAR. The savvy veteran is worth a look.
Regardless of who the White Sox look to acquire, they need to act. This starting rotation is teetering. Reynaldo got shelled again yesterday. Detwiler has been OK through two starts. Gio has been fantastic. Cease could be a solid starter for the rest of this season, but heâs only one start in and showed a lack of control with his fastball. Bañuelos is eh. Covey wasnât that great before but figures to return. Good teams need pitching depth. The above three acquisitions would improve the team. Itâs worth the venture. Letâs beat those Cubbies, get to .500 before the break, get Anderson back and make the rest of the season even more exciting!

Legion Season 3 Episode 3
We were never supposed to get Charles Xavier on Legion. When the show was developed, FX and Fox made it quite clear that though a passing reference may be made to Davidâs famous mutant father, the character was unlikely to appear on screen. In Foxâs eyes, having Patrick Stewart or James McAvoy appear as Professor X on the FX series would only further muddle the already complicated X-Men timeline, and Noah Hawleyâs wigged out vision for his series didnât quite align with their prized X-Men franchise cash cow, so having another actor portray one of the principal leads of their series wouldnât be preferable either.
With the Fox-Disney merger, all of those hang-ups and worries would disappear. Foxâs X-Men franchise took a bow with the disappointing, under-performing Dark Phoenix, and without having to shepherd the mighty mutant IP for another round of films, Fox allowed Noah Hawley to play with one of their prized toys, this time casting Game of Thrones alum Harry Lloyd as the powerful telepath. Itâs a wonderful development for the series, as the introduction of Charles Xavier and his lover Gabrielle Haller leads to one of the seriesâ finest hours.
Per Hawleyâs style, Charles and Gabrielleâs origins arenât cut and copied from comic book lore to the screen, but core elements of their backstory remain in place. Charles meets Gabrielle, a Holocaust survivor, in a mental institution, instantly mirroring the meet cute of David and Syd in Season 1. For a show that has delighted in masking what era the events take place in, this is the first solid conformation that the late 60s/70s aesthetic of Davidâs world isnât just a stylistic choice. Anyway, Charles uses his ability to help the near catatonic Gabrielle (played by Mr. Robotâs Stephanie Corneliussen) clear out the debilitating trauma she experienced. Charles knows that his powers are intrusive and can be easily abused, highlighted in a brilliant, unsettling black and white scuffle in a foxhole during Charlesâ apparent time as a soldier, so he makes it clear that he only uses his powers to help.
Charles and Gabrielle fall in love within the walls of the institution like some quirky indie dramaedy, and Charles then uses his telepath abilities to free them from hospital. The two have David together, but after sensing Amahal Farouk with an early version of Cerebro, Charles leaves in search of the man that shares some of his abilities. During her time alone, Gabrielle longs for Charles and also struggles as Farouk torments her and tries to infiltrate the body of David. Throughout all of this action, we watch as Gabrielle sees visions of the adult version of David and hears his cries for his mother. Using Switchâs abilities David has time traveled to witness his parentsâ history and prevent Farouk from entering his body as an infant, but for some reason, Gabrielle cannot quite see or hear David despite his attempts.
Toward the episodeâs end, David is able to make himself visible during one of the Shadow Kingâs disturbing tricks on Gabrielle, but Charles returns just in the nick of time to interject and dispel David from the past. However, in the aftermath, Gabrielle is returned to her catatonia as the Shadow King takes advantage of a distracted Charles and swoops into David. Itâs still unclear how time travel exactly works in this story, so itâs possible that Davidâs interactions with his mother from the future are and always have been partly to blame for Davidâs essential possession. Another interesting wrinkle is the presence of the Worldâs Angriest Boy doll. I took it to be a physical representation of the trauma or mental health issues that people pass down to their children, but it could also represent that the memories or past that we are witnessing have already been distorted by the Shadow King.
Regardless, after David is driven out of the past, heâs desperate to return, but Switch is too drained to help him. She loses another tooth, which seems to be a consequence for using her time traveling abilities. Thereâs no telling how David will react to Switch not being able to help him in the way that he envisioned. Weâre left with the lingering, fantastically creepy image of Amahal rocking baby David on his knee.
âChapter 22â is a fine reintroduction to Charles Xavier, but an even better episode of Legion. Itâs able to tell a compelling love story while working in some patented psychedelic and disconcerting imagery. Utilizing non-linear storytelling, weâre able to watch as Charles makes the mistake of engaging a monster and how that monster takes away all that is truly important to him. I also love the cinematography in the episode and how Legion is always changing up its look based on the tone or setting of the story. As someone who has been annoyed with this show at times in the past, an episode like âChapter 22â reminds me why I fell for this series in the first place.
Nick Harley is a tortured Cleveland sports fan, thinks Douglas Sirk would have made a killer Batman movie, Spider-Man should be a big-budget HBO series, and Wes Anderson and Paul Thomas Anderson should direct a script written by one another. WHAT TO WATCH THIS WEEKEND April 5, 2019 Â - SHAZAM, PET SEMATARY, THE BEST OF ENEMIES, PETERLOO
Sadly, this is yet another weekend where I wasnât able to see two of the three new movies, but thatâs because Iâm in Las Vegas covering CinemaConfor The Beat, but I do want to write a little more about a movie coming out this weekend that I want to put a little added focus on. Back in the day, I used to include a âChosen Oneâ in each weekâs column, and Iâm getting to the point where Iâd like to try to do something like that again⊠and so, after the jump, you will get my review of one such film.
That movie is PETERLOO (Amazon), the new movie from director Mike Leigh, an eight-time Oscar nominee whose work has garnered him much respect and whose work Iâve especially enjoyed, particularly Vera Drake and Happy-Go-Lucky. The first of these is significant because itâs one of Leighâs rare historic pieces but his last movie Mr. Turner went one further by telling the story of a real person, in that case, painter J.M.W. Turner, as played by Tim Spall.
Peterloo is somewhat of a departure for Mr. Leigh, since it isnât focused on a small group of two to four characters, instead telling a massively complex storyline about a peaceful rally in Manchester that was racked by violence when politicians decided to disperse the crowd.
I have to admit that as Peterloo began on the battlefield of Waterloo, I wasnât sure to expect, thinking it might be Leighâs attempt at a war film, but the story follows a young bugler, Joseph, whom we see on the battlefield before he returns home to Manchester with a case of PTSD.  His family, and in fact, the whole town, is suffering from poverty and hunger, and thereâs a growing desire to be represented in the Parliament in London so that things might improve. The cityâs grew white hope is one Henry Hunt, played by Rory Kinnear, and heâs going to travel up to Manchester to talk to the people who will presumably vote for him.
Once it gets going, Peterloo is such a fascinating film. Iâm really curious to see how Americans will react to it, because while itâs just as typically British as Leighâs previous work, itâs a movie thatâs more about British history and British politics, and Iâm just not sure if thatâs the sort of thing that will connect with Americans.
I can completely understand why some might be frustrated with Leighâs latest, because it is very long, it does take some time to get going, and a lot of time you might not know exactly what is going on or what is being discussed. Â I certainly wasnât exactly sure what was going on or who some of the characters were as they flew through the vast ensemble cast moving from one character and location to another. Eventually, you get used to this pace and start seeing familiar faces that makes things much clearer. Â Leigh also uses this tactic to create layers that build and build to the climactic last half hour of the film where violence disrupts an otherwise peaceful day. Itâs quite the counterpoint to the war scene that opens the film, but donât worry. Joseph doesnât get lost in the shuffle, as you might suspect, because it really follows his journey despite often focusing on others.
One of the things I especially liked about Leighâs latest is that while it does often get somber and serious, thereâs still a wit to it, especially in the way it deals with the stupidity of the politicians and magistrates who seem to have little care for the people theyâre supposed to be representing.
Oddly, two days after seeing Peterloo, I saw the Broadway musical Hamilton, a historical piece that takes place in America earlier than the events of Leighâs film, but it offered a similar resonance to me, even though it did so with musical numbers rather than talking.
Leighâs screenplay is another masterpiece, but I was equally impressed by the casting of such a large ensemble, many with British actors whom few on these shores will have ever seen or heard of. Iâm really curious to know where he found them, because heâs become so known for working with the same small group of actors over the years, and almost everyone in this movie is new to the Leigh camp.
Personally, I think this is Leighâs best film in many, many years, possibly on par with some of his best work even though I know it deals with a far more difficult (and localized) subject. Regardless, itâs also a film I will gladly see a second time just to catch some of the nuances I may have missed the first time around.
Rating: 8.5/10
Now, back to your regularly scheduled preview columnâŠ
As far as the wide releases, Iâve only seen one of them and that was SHAZAM! (New Line/WB), the latest DC Comics character to be brought to the big screen, in this case by Swedish filmmaker David F. Sandberg (Lights Out). I already reviewedthe movie for The Beat, so I donât have much more to say about it (other than my Box Office Preview, which is ALSO at The Beat), but I did enjoy this quite a bit, maybe not as much as Aquaman but definitely as much as Wonder Woman. Itâs a good movie that shows you can do something different with supereheroes and still make a movie work on its own merits (rather than connecting to future movies)
The other movie Iâm really looking forward to seeing (when I get back from Vegas) is the new version of Stephen Kingâs PET SEMATARY (Paramount), directed by Kevin Kolsch and Dennis Widmyer, who found some fans in the horror crowd with their earlier film Starry Eyes. Â I guess the cast could be more interesting, although I do love John Lithgow and Amy Seimetz has been a favorite of mine from the indie work sheâs done. And I donât hate Jason Clarke either, although some of his choices in films (other than last yearâs Chappaquidick, in which he was great) sometimes leaves me scratching my head.
Robin Bissellâs THE BEST OF ENEMIES (STXfilms) is a civil rights drama that one would normally see during Oscar season, since it stars Oscar winner Sam Rockwell and nominee Taraji P. Henson. This story is interesting to me as someone who loved last yearâs Green Book, mainly because there are stories like this (and that) from the â60s that deserve to be told. Unfortunately, Iâm missing this due to CinemaCon as well, so hopefully Iâll have a chance to see it when Iâm back in New York.
LIMITED RELEASES
Besides Peterloo, reviewed above, thereâs a few other films I recommend seeking out, and hopefully the first three of these will expand into other places than big cities after this weekend:
Correction: Oops!! It looks like I missed the fact that Teen Spirit will not open in select cities until April 12, so Iâll rerun my write-up on it next week
Seemingly a lost project/movie, the late filmmaker Sydney Pollack was commissioned by Warner Bros. Records to capture a concert by Aretha Franklin singing gospel songs for a movie, but it was shelved due to technical difficulties. More than 45 years later, that concert is presented in AMAZING GRACE (NEON), and if there ever was any doubt in your mind about what an amazing singer Franklin was, this movie will certainly change that. It opens in select cities.
Opening in New York, L.A. and other cities is Emma Tammiâs Western werewolf movie THE WIND (IFC Midnight), which played at TIFF and Fantastic Fest last year and the more-recent What the Fest in New York. It stars Caitlin Gerard from Insidious: The Last Key as a rugged woman who has moved into a cabin on the American frontier in the early 19thCentury, where she immediately starts feeling as if thereâs a sinister presence, possibly tied to the only other couple who lives out there. Her husband (Ashley Zukerman) doesnât believe her.  If you like Westerns and want to see one with a dominant female presence (both in front and behind the camera) then youâll want to check this out.
I guess this is as good a place as any to mention that one of my favorite filmmaker Terry Gilliamâs new movie The Man Who Killed Don Quixote will be available to see nationwide on Tuesday via Fathom Events. The movie, starring Adam Driver, Jonathan Pryce and a number of amazing European actors who I was unfamiliar with, is one that Gilliam has been trying to make for over 20 years and no surprise, it harks back to his great films like The Adventures of Baron Munchausen and The Fisher King, which came out during the filmmakerâs heyday. Iâm just so happy Gilliam was finally able to make this movie, and it actually turned out quite well.. maybe a little weird for some tastes, but not too weird for lifelong Gilliam fans like myself.Â
Hilary Duff stars in the title role of Daniel Ferrandsâ THE HAUNTING OF SHARON TATE (Saban Films) about the murder of the 26-year-old actress who was pregnant with Roman Polanskiâs baby when she was murdered by Charles Manson and his cult.It opens in theaters and will be available On Demand starting Friday.
Jordan Downeyâs The Head Hunter (Vertical) involves a medieval warrior who is protecting the kingdom from monsters, collecting their heads as he slays them. The one monster he hasnât killed yet is the one that killed his daughter, so he travels on horseback to try to get revenge. It opens in select cities and On Demand.
Jai Courtney stars in Shawn Seetâs adaptation of Colin Thieleâs Storm Boy (Good Deed Entertainment), an Australian drama in which the retired businessman Michael Kingley reflects back on his past life. Some of these memories including a story about how as a boy, he rescued an orphaned pelican and named it Mr. Percival.
Filmmaker Emilio Estevezâs latest film, the political drama The Public (Greenwich), will also open Friday after playing TIFF and a few other festivals. It stars Alec Baldwin with Estevez, Jena Malone, Taylor Schilling, Christian Slater, Gabrielle Union, Michael K. Williams and Jeffrey Wright, and with a cast like that, do you really need to know what the movie is about? Okay, fine. It takes place in a public library in Cincinnati where a number of homeless patrons take it over during an Arctic blast, seeking shelter from the cold but also staging an act of civil disobedience, in the process.
Showing FREE OF CHARGE at New Yorkâs Film Forum (as part of their annual Free Movie Week) starting Wednesday is Cam Christiansenâs animated doc Wall, which looks at the decision by Israel to build the 435-mile long wall to separate the Palestinian West Bank from the rest of Israel. Building that $4 billion wall meant the confiscation of 4,000 acres of Palestinian land and the destruction of 1,000 treesâŠand that area is still in disarray. So yeah⊠building walls is a bad idea.
Stephanie Wang-Brealâs documentary Blowinâ Up (Once in a Blue) deals with the first-ever court created to deal with prostitution in Queens, New York, the Queens Human Intervention Trafficking Court led by the Honorable Toko Serita. The purpose is to help deal with the women and girls arrested for prostitution who are illegal Asian immigrants or are black, Latina or trans, so they get shuffled through the system without it ever dealing with the complex reasons why they turn to prostitution. The doc opens at the Quad in New York Friday and then in L.A. on April 12.
Opening at the Metrograph in New York City is Qiu Shengâs feature debut Suburban Birds (Cinema Guild) involving two narrative strands, one involving land surveyors who are laying subway tracks, the other involving pre-adolescents who rove the streets of the town unsupervised. It soundsâŠum⊠interesting?
Josh Stewart from Criminal Minds writes, directs and stars in Back Fork (Uncorkâd) as family man Waylon who is struggling to keep his life together after tragedy, becoming more dependent on pills. Also starring Agnes Bruckner, the film will open in select cities and be available On Demand starting April 9.
LOCAL FESTIVALS
First up, on Tuesday began the 11th Annual ReelAbilities Film Festival at the JCC Manhattan, celebrating those who have fought past what would normally be considered âdisabilitiesâ to greatness. It kicked off with the Opening Night Gala and Screening of Irene Taylor Brodskyâs Moonlight Sonata: Deafness in Three Movements, a documentary about a boy with genetic deafness who grew up with cochlear implants whose grandfather is adverse against using such technology in his old age. The festival runs through April 9 where the Closing Night film is Nick Kellyâs The Drummer and the Keeper about a drummer dealing with a bipolar diagnosis. In between is a full line-up of narratives and documentaries exploring different disabilities from blindness to mental disorders, and itâs quite an amazing array of films, many which might not ever get distribution, sadly. Screenings take place all over the city including Bellevue Hospital, Lincoln Center and the Museum of the Moving Image in Queens.
Although the 22nd Annual Full Frame Documentary Film Festival takes place in Durham, North Carolina â home of Duke University -- starting Thursday, I do have a love for the documentary genre that makes me want to mention the amazing programming, which will include a thematic program called âSome Other Lives of Time,â curated by Oscar nominee RaMell Ross (Hale County This Morning, This Evening). Steven Bognar and Julia Reichertâs American Factory is the opening night film while the Aretha Franklin concert doc Amazing Grace (released this weekend in other cities) closes this yearâs festival. Thereâs an amazing line-up of docs in between, some that have played other festivals like David Modiglianiâs Running with Beto  and Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am, and others that are premiering at Full Frame. American Factory  directors Steven Bognar and Julia Reichert are getting a tribute with all of their earlier features and shorts shown, as well as their new film about a General Motors plant in Dayton, Ohio that closed, forcing 2,500 people into unemployment. This is a festival Iâve wanted to attend for so long and I do have friends in the Durham area that would make this worth a visit, but itâs only four days from Thursday through Sunday, so canât do it this year.
Also, the Havana Film Festival New York begins at the Museum of the Moving Image on Sunday.
STREAMING AND CABLE
This weekâs big Netflix release is Brie Larsonâs directorial debut UNICORN STORE, in which she plays a 20-something artist named Kit, who is kicked out of art school, forcing her to move back home with her parents. Just as Kit decides to finally grow up, a salesman, played by Larsonâs Captain Marvel co-star Samuel L. Jackson, shows up to offer Kit her heartâs desire. Based on a script by Samantha McIntyre, the film also stars Joan Cusack as Kitâs mother.
Netflix also has a number of new series starting on Friday including Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (from Riverdale showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa) and the eight-part nature series Our Planet, narrated by Sir David Attenborough.
I didnât go to Sundance so I havenât had a chance to see Rashid Johnsonâs Native Son, starring Margaret Qualley, Nick Robinson, Kiki Layne, Ashton Sanders, Sanaa Lathan and Elizabeth Marvel, but that will premiere on HBO this Saturday night.

Knock Knock
Latest Review: Starring Peter Capaldi, Pearl Mackie and Matt Lucas Guest starring: David Suchet Co-starring: Mariah Gale, Mandeep Dhillon, Colin Ryan Ben Presley, Alice Hewkin, Bart Suavek and Sam Benjamin Written by Mike Bartlett Directed by Bill Anderson Produced by Nikki Wilson Executive Producers: Steven Moffat and Brian Minchin First broadcast on BBC1 on Saturday May 6th at 7:20pm This review contains spoilers and is based on a standard, non-binaural preview version of the episode. Speaking at the BFI/Radio Times TV Festival last month, Steven Moffat remarked that one thing he'd like to do after showrunning Doctor Who is write a play. Moffat has done his bit for trafficking between the worlds of theatre and TV talent this season, however, by securing the services of both Rona Munro and feted playwright and Doctor Foster creator Mike Bartlett. King Charles III, one of Bartlett's recent and highly successful plays, is about to hit our television screens in an adapted version, whilst 2016's Wild -- a piece based loosely on the Edward Snowden case which took a radical turn into almost Who-esque territories -- has shown Bartlett's affinity with relevant material. Now, it would seem, is very much Mike Bartlett's time to clamber aboard the occasionally creaking but always smartly veneered Whoniverse. Knock Knock is, let's face it, a rather cheesy title, gesturing at those repetitive old "Who's there?" jokes that probably still generate endless amusement among the programme's youngest fans. But by giving this reference an adult spin -- for this is a riff on the venerable haunted house subgenre -- Bartlett cleverly blurs together child and adult sensibilities right from the outset. Playing with the Doctor's relationship to Bill, and having her address him as "grandfather", is also a lovely throwback to the 1960s show; I initially responded to it in exactly this manner, as a gift to long-term fans. But cunningly, it also slots perfectly well into the theme of this episode's eventual and familial denouement, a smart tongue-and-groove piece of thematic construction (and generational confusion) that's hidden in plain sight.  Writers new to Who have a tendency to emulate the leading tropes of their commissioning showrunner -- Matthew Graham's Fear Her often felt like RTD-lite, and Stephen Thompson's The Curse of the Black Spot replayed Moffat's favoured device of 'technology gone awry'. Here, we get an aspect of the ordinary, everyday world transformed into a fantastical threat, something which, though it has an extensive history in the programme, has also become part of the Moffat repertoire. And there's a kind of variant take on "are you my mummy?" which harks all the way back to The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances. Having said that, Bartlett doesn't only seek to fit seamlessly into the Moffat-esque way of things, and also stamps his own mark on proceedings, notably in a comedic sequence criticising the state of students' rental accommodation in the UK, albeit imparting its critical stance with a deftly light touch. On the minus side, I felt that Bartlett was sometimes a little cramped by the demands of a 43-minute single episode when he's evidently used to working with longer dramatic forms that have more space to unfold characterisation (something that the serialised Doctor Foster achieved quite brilliantly). Since the haunted house story calls for a number of characters who can be bumped off, Bartlett is also pretty much obligated to give Bill a decent number of housemates. This immediately causes a difficulty because each one threatens to become a student stereotype or a single-note creation. Perhaps slightly fewer students to be menaced by Wester Drumlins -- sorry, Bill's new residence -- would have helped on this front. The tightly-coiled demands of an episode that has to set up atmospheric menace before delivering a pay-off 'reveal' also make life slightly difficult for guest star David Suchet, who is required to oscillate between ordinary-but-odd, outright creepy, and something far more essentially and basically human. It's a tough ask, and in places Suchet's performance seemed a little too mannered to me. But regardless of that, Doctor Who is fortunate to attract actors of such calibre, and I was admittedly disappointed that fan speculation regarding 'the Landlord' (that he would become a recurring character of some mysterious and Time Lordly status) fell wide of the mark. Suchet's character is very much a one-shot, belonging to this story alone.  Series 10's Vault storyline continues to gather pace, and the concluding moment -- withholding a reverse shot that would have revealed who was in there -- was deliberately cheeky, and all the more effective for it. But an episode entitled Knock Knock is bound to rely, more than most Doctor Who, on its sound design and soundtrack. On the whole, this worked very well, though the level of aural threat could perhaps have been more intense (I'll be interested to see whether advance hype surrounding this as a very scary episode is reflected in the general fan and audience response, as well as how much difference the binaural version makes). I'm a horror fan, but for my money this was far stronger on atmosphere and build-up than any genuine sense of shocks, jumps or 'scares'. The monsters' mass presence was, in the end, effective without being remarkable -- we dodged a Tractator-level incident, to be sure, but all the CGI hordes still felt generically competent rather than truly memorable.  And packing an episode with wood-related content is, I suspect, always going to be a risk in terms of inciting reviewers' puns or provocations (you can just imagine how any journalist looking for a punchline would reach for their finest grain of 'wooden' material). Actually, focusing on this dimension -- something that has rarely featured in Doctor Who other than as a challenge for the sonic screwdriver -- gives this episode a very specific and quasi-historical flavour. Yes, it's a present-day story, but instead of brutalist concrete-morphing creatures, steel-and-chrome monstrosities, or electronic/nano-techno-villains, there is something almost pleasingly quaint, if not retro, about a good, old wood-based threat. There's a sense of sedimented history, and the dust of ages, that setlles over 'Knock Knock', making the eventual reveal of Eliza's presence (and identity) an integral part of this 'return of the repressed past'. Knock Knock does what the best of contemporary Doctor Who has always strived for: it combines fantastical threats with social commentary and moments of touching emotion and humanity, at the same time as fusing 'child' and 'adult' levels of meaning. As the proverbial 'family television' it also uncovers a gothic, dysfunctional family -- one that needs to be fixed by the Doctor's intervention. Holding on to the past at any cost is shown to be a powerful mistake, and 'Knock Knock' is ultimately about a very different kind of fear to its earlier evocations of creaking floorboards and unseen forces, zeroing in on the fear of loss, and all the misguided actions it can provoke, rather than notching up a villainous case of megalomania or 'evil'. In this, it marks its distance from certain previous incarnations of the show, and develops an approach highlighted in The Pilot. But the question that remains, given the Doctor's chatty engagement with the Vault's occupant, is whether he too, like the Landlord, is mistakenly holding on to an aspect of the past... In a week or two, we'll start to get some answers. http://reviews.doctorwhonews.net/2017/05/knock_knock.html?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=tumblr
