Maple Leafs discourse on their team social medias makes me lose brain cells because wdym they're first in their division and coming off a 5 game win streak & people are commenting that the top players are only in it for the money and have no drive, that particular players are useless and need to be traded asap, that they're a garbage team, that they'll never make it past the first round just because they lost one game.

Apparently because they are being payed handsomely the players must be mindless automatons who perform perfectly every night. It drives me absolutely nuts how quickly alleged fans will completely turn on their own team.

hijinxx  is  a  study  in  overcoming.  of  seeing  the  flaws  within  yourself  and  loving  yourself  regardless  of  them.  it  really  is  your  average   girl  crush  concept  –  a  tirade  of  anthems  proclaiming  self  love,  pride,  and  being  a  baddie  with  your  baddie  friends  in  a  world  that  preys  on  every  facet  of  yourself.  but … is  that  all  there  is ?

taken from the word hijinks, meaning pure and unadulterated fun—of boisterous antics and often partaking in mischief—the group’s name takes a stylistic approach to its meaning. taking the word jinx, which can either be taken as something that brings a person bad luck or when two people say the same word at the time, hijinxx is a meeting between two selves.

hijinxx  is  a  study  in  the  human  girl.  each  girl  represents  a  part  of  the  inner  and  outer  self  ��  mind,  body,  heart,  and  soul.  lost  due  to  an  imbalance  in  the  outer  realm,  corrupted  by  self negligence  and  outter hostility,  the  once  separated  entities  have  finally  come  together  in  order  to  reach  a  new  level  of wholeness  and  self  discovery.  

the  mind,  representative  of  rationale  and  thought,  is  rigid  and  often  overprotective  to  a  fault.  she  fully  believes  she  is  always  right,  seeing  the  other  selves  as  ruled  by  emotion.  mind  is  always  prim,  never  wavering.  a  pillar  for  the  other  selves  to  lean  on.  but  she  often  does  not  allow  change  to  come  forth.  she  relaxes  in  routine,  comforted  by  tradition.  when  unexpected slights to her reality ,  she  flounders,  often  unsure  on  what  to  do.  heart  eases  her  worries,  soul  provides  inner  peace,  body  suggests  rest.  one  can  not  exist  without  the  other  three.

ahyeon  is  the  representative  of  the  mind,  as  the  oldest  member  of  the  group.  despite  not  being  the  leader,  she  is  always  the  voice  of  reason  and  is  the  first  person  to  go  to  with  a  problem  looking  to  be  solved.  she  prides  herself  in  her  experience  and  expendability—but  when  happens when  she  can  no  longer  bear  the  brunt  of  the  weight?  what  happens  when  the  pillar  starts  to  show  cracks?

the  body  is  the  vessel.  the  outer  presence  of  the  human  girl,  she  is  the  first  thing  outsiders  see.  overexertion  is  her  biggest  flaw.  she   constantly  moves  to  prove  herself.  muscles  aching,  head  ringing,  driven  to  collapse—it  doesn’t  matter.  she  needs  to  be  presentable  to  evade  the  harsh  realities  of  the  outer realm.  but  are  any  of  the  pressures  even  real?  are  they  tangible?  why  do  they  weigh  her  already  weak  form  down?  her  form  of  flesh  and  blood?  do  they  not  know  she  is  still  fragile  despite  her  front?  mind  offers  a  plan.  heart  soothes  her  aches  and  pains.  soul  begs  to  be  held.  one  cannot  exist  without  the  other  three.

micha  represents  the  body.  as  leader  and  the  face  of  the  group—she  is  the  first  person  people  come  to  when  it  entails  hijinxx  as  a  whole.  she’s  the  embodiment  of  perfectionism;  of  tireless  training  and  an  unwavering  work  ethic.  but  what  happens  when  the  body  is  pushed  too  far?  when  pain  and  weathering  the  storm  comes  to  be  more  than  you  can  handle--and  your  physical  form  can  only  take  so  much,  despite  your  endless  drive?  the  hiatus  was  hard  on  her.  the  injury  was  dumb,  but  she  needed  to  prove  she  was  above  human  nature.

the  heart  is  life.  blood  rushing  in  your  ears  and  through  your  veins,  the  most  feeling  of  the  four.  emotions  rule  the  heart.  passion,  empathy,  love.  out  of  the  four  selves  the  heart  is  the  most  gullible.  sweet,  hope-filled  heart.  the  world  is  too  harsh  for  your  naivety.  you’re  too  trusting,  almost  dumb.  tripping  over  yourself  to  please  those  who  don’t  care  about  you  all  in  the  name  of  wanting  to  fit  in.  what  happens  when  they  don’t  accept  you?  what  was  all  your  hard  work  for,  then?  they  stab  your  tender  flesh  over  and  over  again.  you  let  them  because  you  want  them  to  stay.  why?  why  do  you  care  so  much?  mind  puts  up  a  front  as  soul  comforts  her  sister,  and  body  is  the  brute  shield.  one  cannot  exist  without  the  other three.

eunji  represents  the  heart.  as  the  group’s  maknae,  it’s  no  secret  that  she  is  openly  loved  and  protected  by  the  other  three  girls.  as  the  group’s  main  vocalist,  the  power  in  her  voice  is  nothing  short  of  emotional.  she  pours  her  entire  heart  into  singing  because  it’s  the  only  thing  she  has  that  hasn’t  been  tainted  by  her.  but  as  an  emotion-driven  person,  her  biggest  flaw  is  wearing  her  beating  organ  on  her  sleeve.  too  often  is  she  exposed  to  the  vultures,  tearing  at  her  life source over and over again.  the  hjx  girls  can  only  protect  her  so  much.

and  last  but  not  least—the  soul.  holder  of  the  biggest  aura,  she  is  the  energy.  she  is  the  second  half  of  the  source  life  for  the  four,  but  while  heart  is  emotion,  soul  is  motivation.  your  are  the  inner  most  important  part  of  the  group,  central  to  its  humanity.  you  are  the  most  difficult  to  pin  down,  slipping  through  fingers  like  running  water.  mind  stares  at  you  curiously.  you  and  heart  are  two  sides  of  the  same  coin.  body  rests  on  your  shoulders,  content with the bond you provide.  one  cannot  exist  without  the  other  three.

yuina  represents  the  soul.  nicknamed  hijinxx’s  energy  pill  and  dance  machine,  she  is  what  feeds  hijinxx’s  spirit.  you  can’t  help  but  to  notice  her  when  she  walks  into  the  room–commanding  attention  for  her  aura.  but  doesn’t  it  get  so  tiring  being  the  one  who  is  expected  to  keep  smiling?  has  anyone  noticed  your  overcompensation  or–or  has  it  just  been  you  this  whole  time?  your  mask  can  only  hold  up  for  so  long.  you  can  only  maintain  this  front  for  so  long.

a  symphony  erupts  each  time  the  entities  come  together.  bursts  of  color,  light,  sound.  of  mistakes  and  the  arms  that  move  to  hold  you  despite  them.  hijinxx  is  a  study  in  your  humanity  as  well  as  mine.

Final Blog Post!

What are my personal ethics as I develop as a nature interpreter? I was stumped by this question for a moment. It should be easy, but explaining why you do what you do isn’t as easy as you’d imagine. I guess a good place to start with is a question unit 10 asked- “what motivates you to do this work?” I’ve already discussed trying to figure out who I am or what I’m “meant” to do in previous blog entries. But it’s a question I’ve genuinely had to stop and ask myself. I feel like I’ve been on autopilot for so long, just working through my education as I saw necessary. I sought a Marine and Freshwater biology major because I valued the environment, and because it seemed the most interesting, but I wasn’t too sure where I wanted to go using it. I now want to truly test the waters (no pun intended) and see what I’m capable of. So I signed up for this course! And I think I’m onto something. 

For me, a fulfilling career definitely involves working with nature in some form. I value the environment and think a career helping to protect it would be in line with my values. Historically, I’ve done very well in scientific/research positions, but despite that I don’t know if that’s for me. I don’t feel very motivated to get out there and do science. Perhaps that’s just me doubting my capabilities, but as it stands I don’t feel like I can put myself out there very well. So what else is there I can do involving nature that lets me help the environment, even indirectly? Something I’ve always valued is uplifting and inspiring others. I’ve demonstrated this a few times, especially in my career as a swim instructor. I’ve always enjoyed showing enthusiasm towards kids, letting them know I’m just as excited as they are, letting them show me how wonderfully they understand what they’re learning. Nothing makes me feel good quite like watching someone succeed with my guidance. So perhaps I could combine this with my passion for nature, in a career as a nature interpreter? It’s certainly worth a try!

What do I believe in? I’ve already explained that I value nature and the environment, so you could say I believe in that. I believe nature is a wonderful thing, and that the animals, plants, and other parts of nature need to be protected. More than that, I believe that everyone should have an equal opportunity to appreciate nature as I have. We’ve already unpacked privilege in this course, and in the process I considered things that I have never quite considered. I never considered how lucky I was to have been given access to the outdoors as a child. To me, going outdoors was as simple as walking across the street to my local park, or taking a short drive with my parents to a natural park. I was given access to resources I never even really considered scarce, resources I thought everybody just “had”. I’d take pride in giving everyone an equal opportunity to experience nature through my lens, whether that be explaining to them how our world works to letting them see it for themselves. 

Even more than this being my belief, it’s also my responsibility as a nature interpreter to break down these socioeconomic barriers keeping people from truly enjoying nature. Leveling the playing field so that anyone can enjoy nature, not just the privileged, is a task I take seriously. As to how I’d do it, it mostly boils down to treating every participant equally, regardless of income, race, etc. These barriers can be difficult to break, but I think I can do it! 

My second belief, and in my opinion, goal and responsibility, is to help participants find a sense of place among nature. I spoke about, in my very first blog post, how with the help of my own interpreter I found a sense of place on the rocky coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia. The roaring waves, the serene trees, the very smelly sea lions on the rock just offshore. I want to provide that feeling to a new generation, be it through the sights they’ll see, the skills they’ll learn, and the creatures they’ll meet. I feel like I’ve suffered, being stuck indoors doing work, and I wish to provide an escape to anyone who’s willing. This sort of work would be refreshing to not only others, but to myself as well. 

The final question remaining is what approaches are most suitable for me. In a previous blog post, I spoke about how I wasn’t sure what kind of learner I was- and as such, I wasn’t sure how best I’d teach. A quiz I took suggested I was an auditory and visual learner, but I’d consider myself a tactile learner too. It’s possible a teaching role with all three might be best for me! For example, I might handle an animal, encouraging participants to feel it, while showing off its unique features and explaining them to onlookers. I feel like a career working with animals might be best for me, as it gives me something to work on (training the animal), learn about (about the species and the individual), and of course, share. 

All that said, I don’t think a career as a nature interpreter is that far-fetched for me. It’d combine my love for nature with my love for teaching, and let me share my love with the world while making a difference in a small yet meaningful way. To tie this back to the very beginning, I think that doing as such has been a goal of mine since the very beginning, whether I knew it or not. I considered biology to be the most interesting major I could take, and I don’t think I can think of a more satisfying way to spread that interest and inspire a new generation of biologists.

Whew. Tricky one. I think where it needs to start, is with wider recognition that companies are sociopaths. Necessarily, and by design. Everybody gets to pass the buck - 'well, my boss wants this, and it's my job' - right up to the Board, who assume that the shareholders only care about profits. They're often right - but it's that assumption, and that structure, that then drives profit-seeking and cutting costs and doing things the cheap and easy way at every level, regardless of the human or environmental cost, while everyone gets to claim it's what their boss wants. Companies will never, ever be ethical, unless they're forced, by: - Government - which is slow, has to be driven to act by a passionate enough constituency, then resourced to enforce it over years - Competition - which is what they'll respond to most naturally. If another company gets ahead of the game in attracting investors through their latest greenwashing gimmick, that threatens their actual motivation - Negative publicity - which targets their biggest vulnerability, being skittish investors who think that *other* investors will sell based on this, so they better sell first - Loss of profits - just through people not buying their thing? It's pretty indirect. But, a bit, yeah. But the point is - never, ever believe that a company is 'committed to a sustainable future!' or whatever because they 'are' a 'good' company. That's not how it works. There is no sense of responsibility; there *can't* be! They're only responding to one of the forces above. And if we stop expecting companies to ever be anything but sociopaths - then the responsibility is back on *us* to force them to be better. Chip in to the messages Government gets. Support companies that *are* taking a gamble on increasing their profits through one of these environmental projects - that may prompt others to follow. Boost the signal when they do crappy things. But the first step is understanding, and not expecting change to happen any other way.

i just think that we should probably hold companies to a higher standard than singular humans. i think that if a company violates the law that it should experience harsher and more permanant consequences than a human, because for a company to violate the law it requires Several People violating the law in concert. holding any one of them responcible isnt it. we must hold the Entity responsible.

Navigating the Crossroads of Career and Ministry

 

Before encountering Christ, my career stood as my idol. If you said I couldn't do it, I made it my goal to prove you wrong. In 2006, the Lord transformed my life, saved my marriage, and freed me from my idol. My new passion for Christ became a priority. Although I excelled and even received top-tier ratings, my career no longer defined me, and I was lost in it.

 

The problem with A-type personalities is that they thrive in challenging movements. We are passionate about leading teams to success, but we strive for more regardless of whether the setting is a career or ministry.

 

The feeling that success means upward mobility leads to easy bait, and I saw myself pursuing my career again while still active in ministry for the next six years. Which leads to a slippery slope.

 

The most freeing moment in my career was when I could walk away from pursuing a title or what others saw as success. The rewards of those decisions always exceeded my expectations. When we think of rewards, we assume financial rewards, but how much is your marriage, family, or relationship with Jesus worth? I can tell you that since the Lord resurrected my life, He has rescued my marriage, family, and me countless times. I will also tell you He has exceedingly provided more financially than I could ever imagine, title or no title.

 

When we work to honor the Lord, He provides. My drive to be successful in all I do is to bring honor and glory to the Lord, but it's easy to fall back into your idol. It starts with good intentions, but like I said, it's a slippery slope.

 

They say work-life balance is hard. I say being a Christian with a type-A work ethic is hard because when you take a toxic work ethic and mix it with your desire to help everyone, two things happen: you over-commit yourself and expect man to reward you.

 

Remember who you are doing it for, and always place Christ first. When He puts on the breaks, it is for your good because you're going in the wrong direction.

As I stand at yet another crossroads between career and ministry, I'm reminded that where the Lord guides, He provides. I pray that you, too, find encouragement in your journey as a Christian leader, whether navigating a career, serving in ministry, or balancing both.

Upon reflecting on my interest with the bluezones, I was able to dig deeper and see what it was that really interested me. I was able to identify the act of preserving human connection to be a real interest point for me, which i decided to explore:

what is it i am trying to say? What am I particularly interested in?

I think western culture has destroyed a lot of room for traditions, slow living, and staying in touch with our human-ness.

The demands of work are becoming more intense

Younger generations are becoming more used to technology doing everything for them

The preservation of real human connectivity is essential in keeping us happy and healthy

Small changes in peoples lives can make astronomical differences, but does western culture allow us to see that? Or is everything just too convenient now?

we don’t live in the now, the demands are too high- creates so much anxiety

ignorance of gut health- western world is so overdone with

what characteristics live within these issues?

Does this idea have legs? What could you do with it?

look at ways of preserving real human connectivity- how do people do this? What are ways people connect to one another? Could this be literal to make a point? Or figurative?

Listening to a couple of podcasts surrounding this topic, these were the notes i made:

Preserving our humanity in the age of robots:

We search for human socialisation and connection in basic objects regardless of lack of humanity (naming rumbas, cars etc- phones and tech express emotions)

Technosexuals : marrying AI

Tech is changing our perception of reality- tailored to our preferences and history, gets to a point where we loose realisation that tech is not alive- we are just talking to ourselves 

Uncanny valley- emotional reaction where we see a robot that’s too good at replicating human behaviour, but isn’t perfect- so is a bit off (almost alive, not quite alive)

If it’s too perfect, our minds are confused about if it is human or not- is it conscious? What is robot consciousness? 

At this point, robots don’t have consciousness- “black box problem”: people programming AI don’t even know about the algorithm consciousness 

Robot rights- if they get conscious, ensuring they incorporate human ethics, who’s responsible for their mistakes?

Robots and loneliness: people who are so connected to their phones, they lack in real human connection - have to remember to divide a robot between a human being

We will cease to reach out- people who are lonely and isolated who are so accustomed to their relationship with a robot (which is incredibly easy)

Without human challenge, there’s no growth- although people with autism have algorithms that help them and teach them

Need to transfer social skills to human people again once learnt from robots, even though the tech can help people

Displacement of people- increasing loneliness 

Tech will give us more time to have human interaction by doing things for us

if everything is ai, you are not creating any new experiences, and are therefore regurgitating algorithms (no authenticity anymore)

The power of third spaces, IRL Human Connection & Big Talk: Drive in again 

Creating a space where people feel safe enough 

Third place- a place where people can just be- to interact with people, have hobbies, how do we create them?

Lack of third places creating depression and loneliness 

Third place creates a sense of belonging, of curiosity, connection

Surfing is third place, these things are third places

Community events- live music big talk nights, start night off with big talk questions (such as what are you passionate about)? Have a meaningful connection and conversation with at least 15 people there

Needs to be an element of surprise, fluidity and guidance when creating third spaces and human connection

People have social anxiety due to not knowing how to connect 

People turn to alcohol at third spaces, to not have social anxiety (could be a range of social drinks?)

Men shed concept- working shoulder to shoulder on something construction based whilst bonding

Walks and roller skating- giving your body something to do and move to focus on something else (hiking also- connection with not only nature but other people)

Find a hobby or touchpoint: find the thing you love to do, start with just two other people and meet up once a month- once a week etc

Creating themes, creating intention- making a space for people to bond over something together, and also the safety of knowing what they are going to

Learn something first, have a foundational base to learn something, offering help and spaces to be a part of something

Pillars of friendship: 1) loyalty 2) showing up for people 3) having mutual values and hobbies 4) someone you can grow with 

Go to devices when we get burnt out

Memories are all we have when we are on our deathbed

Create more than you consume : 

Big talk- questions that skip the small talk, can be used with anyone 

From listening to these podcasts, I was able to identify different problem areas, and start to think about solutions. Even though I am unsure of which way to take this project, thinking about these things can allow me to explore them further.

I highlighted the points I found interesting, then started to look at more solutions that already exist.
