part two
pairing: zuko x princess!reader
notes: part two is here! again, there’s some notable changes from the comics to fit Princess into the story but i think it works! hope you guys enjoy :)
summary: team Avatar is together again, but Galik’s vendetta against the Northerners prevents them from enjoying their time at the festival
~ part of the fire lilies series ~
Tumblr media
Hakoda and Malina are waiting outside the palace for you when you finally return from your talk with Katara. Both look eager to speak to you, and you’re not sure if that’s a good sign or a bad one. The trio had been vague when requesting your presence for an impromptu meeting, so you weren’t exactly sure what they wished to discuss with you, but if you had to guess you’d assume it has something to do with the oil refinery they wish to build.
“Thank you for agreeing to meet with us at such short notice,” Malina professes earnestly as the two escort you to your office. “I know how busy you must be what with the festival being tonight.”
“It’s not a problem at all. I always look forward to hearing new ideas for the improvement of our tribe,” you assure her with a shake of your head. “But I do have to ask, what exactly are you hoping to discuss with me?”
“You said you wanted proof that the construction of the oil refinery would be in the tribe’s best interest,” Hakoda notes thoughtfully as the three of you finally reach your office. “Well, Maliq and Malina managed to bring the proof to you.”
You furrow your brows in uncertainty at his words and open your mouth to ask just what exactly he means by that, but your is question answered when the doors of your office are finally opened. In the center of the room stands Maliq with a content smile on his face, and beside him stands none other than the Blind Bandit herself.
“Toph!” You exclaim in surprise before rushing forward to envelope her in a tight hug. “Oh, it’s so good to see you!”
“I’d say the same thing if I could see,” she notes with a humorous grin. “Nice to know you missed me, your highness.”
“Of course I did! It’s been much too long.”
“Wouldn’t have been so long if you’d told me about that assassination attempt,” she notes wryly before giving you a harsh punch to the arm. “I would have kicked that guy’s butt in an instant if you’d asked.”
“Yeah, my mistake,” you note sheepishly, rubbing the tender spot on your arm from her punch. “What brings you here now?”
“We thought it would be best if you heard from a representative of a successful oil refinery yourself to see just how impactful this project could be for the South,” Maliq answers on Toph’s behalf.
“Representative? I’m an executive partner now!” The girl corrects with a hint of annoyance in her tone.
“Miss Beifong here oversees Earthern Fire Industries and has offered to supply us with the materials needed to extract the oil and build the refinery,” Malina explains animatedly.
“Wait a minute, how are you being offered supplies for a project that doesn’t exist yet?” You retort with a raised brow, looking at the two siblings expectantly. Malina turns meek under your gaze, but Maliq doesn’t seem to have a care about being caught in the lie.
“We may have bent the truth to get Miss Beifong to come here today,” he admits with a shrug. “But does it really matter? Now that she’s here she can tell you all about the success her refinery has had and how important such a project will be here in the South! We figured if you wouldn’t listen to us, maybe you’d listen to a trusted friend.”
“Going behind my back for something like this is unacceptable,” you scold firmly, doing your best to keep your anger at bay. “You have no right to make these types of decisions without my approval. I am Chief, and you two are visitors. Don’t forget that.”
Maliq is stunned by your words, obviously not expecting this type of response from you. He thought you were smart enough to understand how big this project could be, how desperately your people needed something like this. Why were you being so naive?
“I’m sorry, y/n, I didn’t know this was an ambush,” Toph repents, awkwardly grasping at the back of her neck. “As much as I love Malina and Maliq’s work, I wouldn’t have come if I’d known you weren’t onboard.”
“You’re making a mistake!” Maliq tries to argue. “You need to stop seeing things through such a Southern lens and look at the bigger picture here!”
“Southern lens?” You retort in offense. Malina picks up on your displeased tone and quickly steps in for her brother.
“You’re right, we shouldn’t have overstepped,” she apologizes on his behalf. “We just want to do all we can to help lift up the South.”
“I appreciate the sentiment, but if you keep going behind my back then I won’t be needing your help any longer,” you warn before turning your disappointed gaze to Hakoda. “I appreciate all you’ve done and all you’re doing as advisor, but this cannot happen again.
“Understood, Chief. We shouldn’t have lied to you,” he repents with a sigh. "Perhaps we just got a little carried away.”
“I don’t want to hear anymore about this oil refinery,” you say with finality before turning to Toph. “I’m sorry you came all this way for nothing, but I hope you’ll stay for the festivities taking place tonight in honor of Sokka and Katara’s return home.”
“Free food and games? I’m in,” the girl replies with a grin.
You’re able to say nothing more as a knock on the door interrupts your conversation. All heads turn to the doorway where your mother steps in, a sheepish smile on her face.
“I hope I’m not interrupting,” she apologizes bashfully, “but Chief y/n is needed in the courtyard.”
“No, of course not, mother. Our conversation is over,” you tell her, giving the group a pointed look. “Hakoda, could you please take Toph to Sokka and Katara? They can get her situated while I’m gone.”
After giving your orders, you follow your mother out of the office and into palace hallways towards the front doors. “What needs my attention?”
“You have a visitor is all,” she notes with a giddy smile. “They requested your immediate presence.”
“It better not be another representative,” you grumble irately. You’re still frustrated over the fact that you were lied to by your advisor and that the siblings had tried to go behind your back with their project, but the feeling doesn’t last long when you see who’s standing outside the palace doors.
Bouquet of fire lilies in hand and a tender smile on his face, Zuko immediately opens his arms for you to throw yourself into his embrace. He’s impossibly warm and his hold on your figure is impossibly tight as he hugs you close to his chest.
“Zuko, you made it!” You exclaim, escaping his hold to cup his face in your hands and pull him down to meet your lips in a kiss.
“I wouldn’t have missed it for the world,” he replies breathlessly after breaking your kiss. “You have no idea how much I’ve missed you.”
“Definitely not as much as I’ve missed you,” you argue with a careful smile, your face growing warm as he hands you the bouquet of flowers before pressing a chaste kiss to your cheek.
“Thank you for hosting me and allowing me to stay in your home,” Zuko says to your mother, bowing in respect to the woman.
“After all you’ve done for my daughter? It’s the least I can do,” she smiles with a passive wave of her hand. Then, looking to you, she says, “I’m going back to the square to finish setting up for the festival. I’ll see you two there.”
Now alone, you eagerly take Zuko’s hand in your own and practically drag him back into the palace.
“Oh, I have the perfect outfit picked for you to wear to the festival tonight!” You exclaim elatedly while Zuko struggles to match your pace. With your back turned to him, you don’t see the way he looks at you as if you hang all the stars in the sky.
It’s good to be back.
~~~
Despite the celebration being held in honor of Sokka and Katara’s return home, you haven’t seen much of the siblings since the start of the festival. You remain glued to Zuko’s side as you stroll through the square and admire all the work that went into putting the festivities together.
“You certainly outdid yourself,” Zuko compliments with a faint smile as he watches a group of children play ring toss in hopes of winning the giant stuffed koala otter on display. The South is warm and full of life, so different from what Zuko was used to, but he enjoyed it all the same. It felt nice to finally spend time with you without having to worry about his sister or his father or any other nonsense that often got in the way of your peaceful life together.
“You don’t think it’s too much?” You ask with a sheepish laugh. “I wanted Sokka and Katara to feel appreciated, but I also just wanted to give my people the chance to have fun for a night and not have to worry about any of their troubles.”
“You’re a wonderful leader, and the South is lucky to have you,” Zuko compliments before giving you an affectionate kunik.
“Y/n!” A voice interrupts. Aang and Katara walk arm-in-arm towards you, and everything finally feels complete when the Avatar greets you with a hug.
“Aang, it’s so good to see you! I’m glad you could make it,” you express earnestly. “I was worried my invitation might have gotten lost before it could reach you.”
“It’s nice to be back in the South,” he sighs happily. “Everything looks great!”
“Everything tastes great, too!” Sokka adds as he and Toph join your group. He holds multiple skewers of meat and passes one off to you and Zuko while Toph trails behind holding a plethora of stuffed animals. “Isn’t this amazing?! Team Avatar back together again!”
“It certainly does feel like old times,” you note wistfully as you think back to your time during the war- how things have changed. “I want to thank you all again for being here, you have no idea how much this means to me.”
“We’ll always be here,” Katara says with a warm smile. “No matter what.”
“Y/n,” your mother calls from across the way, interrupting your little reunion. “It’s time for your speech!”
“Oh, of course. Sokka, Katara, come with me,” you tell the siblings, giving them no time to argue as you take each of their hands and escort them to the front.
Using your bending, you send a blast of ice into the air that erupts into a flurry of tiny snowflakes. The act catches the attention of your people, and they watch in awe as the snow begins to fall over the festival.
“People of the Southern Water Tribe, it is my great honor to have you here tonight to celebrate the return of our heroes Sokka and Katara!” You announce, earning an eruption of cheers and applause for your friends. “It is because of their bravery and sacrifice that I stand here before you today. Our tribe took a hard hit during the war, but we’ve persevered and come back even stronger! Every day that passes brings the Southern Water Tribe into a new era of strength and hope. At this time I’d like to take this moment to also thank our Reconstruction team Malina and Maliq for their help in our rebuilding process. I have great hope we can accomplish great things with the help of our sister tribe, and I’d just like to say that-“
“-Everybody needs to get out of here now!” Toph interrupts frantically as the ground begins to shake beneath you. Panicked gasps and murmurs spread throughout the crowd as you try to gain your bearings only to falter at the sight of the giant drill that emerges from beneath the ground. Your people have scattered away in search of safety, and you’re left standing horrified at the display.
At the top of the drill stands Galik, surrounded by fellow warriors with their battle regalia on and weapons at the ready. His features are angry, his eyes dead set on the Northern siblings as he begins his rant.
“Brothers and sisters, I am Galik of the Southern Water Tribe!” He proclaims. “I am your warrior, your blood, your true brother. So believe me when I say that those scoundrels from our so-called “sister tribe” are not here to help us! They are here to subjugate and humiliate us!”
“Galik, what is the meaning of this?!” You demand harshly as you approach the man despite Sokka’s warning voice begging you to stay put. Zuko watches on anxiously from the sidelines without making a move; he doesn’t want to interfere in water tribe business, but he’s prepared to do what he must to protect you if anyone so much as raises a hand towards you.
“I am sorry to ruin your celebration, Chief y/n. I know you had good intentions when inviting these outsiders into our home, but we can no longer stand by and watch them take advantage of your trusting nature. They tend to strip our land of its oil and destroy everything we’ve worked to build!”
“That oil will bring prosperity to your people!” Malina tries to argue. “These plans are for the benefit of the South!”
“Those plans,” you correct firmly, shooting a harsh glare at Malina, “no longer exist. I shut them down, Galik. No one is taking our oil.”
“So you think,” Galik corrects before producing Maliq’s missing briefcase. “Those foreigners plan to claim our oil for themselves! They plan to colonize our tribe, to have our Chief step down from her duties and allow the North to take control!”
“What? That can’t be true!” You cry indignantly before looking towards Malina. The woman doesn’t meet your eye, and slowly you feel the disappointment begin to rise within you. “Can it?”
“It was true,” she murmurs shamefully. “We never used the words colony or colonize, but we worried that the South wasn’t ready to handle such important resources. We worried that such a young girl wasn’t fit to rebuild an entire tribe.”
“And we were right,” Maliq butts in harshly much to his sister’s dismay.
“No we weren’t! We realized we were wrong and decided to abandon our original plans!”
“No, you decided! I never agreed to a change of plans!” Her brother lashes out before angrily pointing a finger at you. “Your Chief is too stuck in the past to move forward into the future! She can’t handle such a big responsibility, none of you can!”
“That is enough!” You try to interrupt only for his construction crew to block your path. Zuko is by your side in an instant, taking their transgression as his cue to step in.
“Watch it,” he warns them lowly, his eyes blazing with fierce protectiveness for his Princess.
“We’re building that refinery with or without your permission, and once that oil is out of the ground it will be under Northern control!” Maliq declares much to his sister’s trepidation.
“See how they disrespect our Chief?!” Galik counters to the group of onlookers that watch the scene unfold. “Our blood and sacrifice kept them safe during the war, and as if that wasn’t enough, now they want our oil! They want our home! They’ve wormed their way into our affairs like parasites, feeding off of our land for their own benefit! Hakoda has abused his position as advisor and led us astray. I’m sure he’s conspiring with them to take the throne for himself much like that traitor Koa tried to do!”
“You don’t know what you’re talking about!” Sokka cries angrily from the crowd. “Our father would never approve of this!”
“Hakoda is too much of a coward to stand up to his own Chief!” Maliq asserts before turning his critical eyes back to you. “But I’m not. I expected better from a Princess, a girl who’s traveled the world and seen for herself the success of other nations, but I guess you really are just a Southerner after all. You can’t be trusted to know what’s best for anyone, and that’s why the South needs the oversight of an actual civilization!”
“The South needs you to leave! Immediately,” you proclaim harshly, staring down the man until he finally backs off. The air is thick with tension after Maliq’s outburst, and no one knows just what to do or say. Finally, Galik interrupts the silence.
“Your kind heart fails you again, y/n,” he says with a shake of his head and a menacing tone. “After all they’ve done, they don’t just get to leave.”
“For the tribe!” He and his warriors cry before charging at the siblings.
“Quick, we have to help them!” You urge Zuko before discarding your parka to allow you a greater range of motion to bend.
“After everything they’ve done?! He completely disrespected you!” The Fire Lord adduces.
“That doesn’t mean they deserve to be killed!”
You quickly use your bending to procure a wall of ice to block the group from reaching the siblings. You catch Aang and Katara in your peripheral fighting off Galik’s men while Sokka and Toph attempt to crowd control, and beside you Zuko shoots blasts of flames to ward off the attackers.
Suddenly, a heap of rock knocks your feet out from under you and sends you sprawling into the snow after colliding into your figure. You’d been so engrossed in warding off Galik’s men that you hadn’t even noticed Maliq and Malina’s crew sneaking up behind you.
“Don’t hurt her!” Malina protests only for one of them to dismiss her concerns.
“If she was such a “big and powerful” Chief she would have been able to defend herself,” the earth bender argues. “She’s nothing but a Southern bender.”
A ball of fire is suddenly shot in his direction and the quickly man ducks to the ground in fear. Peering up from the snow, Zuko towers over the man menacingly with his hand ready to strike. “Want to say that again?”
“H-Hey, it was just a joke! Honest! She’s a really good water bender!” The man splutters. He screams in terror when another blast is shot his way, but it only lands on the side of him and narrowly misses his head.
“Don’t you forget it.”
While the wind was momentarily knocked out of you from the impact of the rock, you’re quick to recover and get back on your feet to fight. However, you falter at the sight of Galik standing before you. He holds a hand up in surrender to signal he has no intentions of fighting you, and so you do the same.
“This has gotten out of hand, Galik. You need to call off your troops,” you plead breathlessly. “We shouldn’t be fighting.”
“I’ve tried to be patient with you, y/n, but I can only do so much,” the older man admits with a sigh. “They deserve what’s coming to them.”
“I’m just as upset as you are about Maliq’s plan, but this isn’t the way to go. At the end of the day we’re all a family.”
“Family?! Did the Northern scum care when our water benders were desecrated by the raiders? Did they care when our Princess was taken from us by the Fire Nation? Did they care when your father lost his life in battle while their Chief got to hide behind a wall of ice? They are not our family, and you need to realize this before it’s too late.”
“If we continue on this way we’ll be proving them right!” You argue desperately. “We’ll only show them that we can’t handle our own affairs! Just stop this and I’ll make it right!”
“It’s much too late for that now, Princess. The situation has gotten out of hand and needs correction. You’ve done all you can to rectify the problem, but your judgement is clouded by your love for the Fire Lord. The ash maker has brainwashed you.”
“How dare you call him that?!” You yell fiercely, your blood boiling at the insult and your patience just about worn thin. “You’re the one that’s brainwashed if you truly believe such crazy conspiracies!”
“It’s not a conspiracy, it’s the truth! How many times have you let foreigners take advantage of you?! You risked your life to save Zuko’s and yet you are the one that carries the scars on your hands! You opened our home to the Northern scum and yet they wish to take the throne away from you! You’ve had your chance to do things your way, but it’s time for me to take over now, Chief.”
You notice his eyes are no longer focused on you but on something behind you, and you immediately react by whirling around and using a water whip to disable your approaching attacker before they can reach you. Your move sends them flying across the courtyard and into a nearby food stand. Guiltily, you make a mental note to pay the owner for the damages your attack has caused.
“Y/n!” Zuko calls as he rushes towards you. “Are you alright?”
“I’m fine, but Galik got away,” you huff in disappointment. Surveying the area, you notice that both the Northern siblings and your friends are missing from the square. “Where are the others?”
“I’m not sure, but they must have run after him.”
“I’m sorry things always seem to get out of hand when you visit the South,” you say with a demeaned frown. “I promise it’s not always like this.”
“Hey, it’s much better than the stuff I put you through when you visit the Fire Nation,” Zuko jokes in an attempt to lighten the situation. “You handle the stress of being a leader far better than I ever could.”
Smiling faintly, you give his hand a comforting squeeze before urging him out of the square. “Let’s go find Gilak.”
“Chief y/n, you have to come quick!” A guard calls from the distance, alerting you of her presence and interrupting your conversation with Zuko. The next words to come out of her moth are the last words you ever expected to hear, and they fill your stomach with dread when she shouts, “Hakoda’s been stabbed.”
Vampire AU | Shacks and whistles.
Tumblr media
“You want eight shacks this run?” Jake double-checked as he and the group of humans sat at their respective radios. Today was not a Hometree day and he wasn’t training as Neytiri had to assist with a birth with Mo’at so the humans planned their next theft now that there were more people.
“Well, Nine, actually,” Xanthe spoke, looking at their list of chosen options. “Castro here wants the airlocks specifically. The ninth one we can cut up and bring down ourselves but the trip is a little tricky and will be slow but possible without air support.”
“Airlo-cks?” Zane asked, a little confused. His voice cut off a moment as the frequency changed on its typical cycle.
“We’re using air-tight, fabric-based airlocks at Homebase, not the best but the only feasible ones in both quantity and availability. No one could drag a solid airlock door on their back out. RDA would have noticed.”
Homebase, the main living cave of the miners. Jake knew from conversation the last few days of the general names of the main caves and their people. Wei Chang, Matthew Holster, and Sean Wallen were the only ones he hadn’t met yet. Jake remembered they had sealed their cave off and made it breathable for humans and he was curious to get a peek but it was still slow going for both the adjustments and for safe cave navigation. A week until they’d be able to go down, Alejandra had said.
Still, he could see how having an actual airlock would be better than a tent with a tiny air filter system in place.
“We could cut up the chosen shacks walls and fuse them together for a bigger space so they won’t need an airlock system between like the dual shacks sites have.” Nadine suggested, “We can use those, as long as there’s at least one airlock, as means of a storage house in the mountains. Protected from the air and elements, and we have means of still putting the shacks to use if we don’t at our campsites.”
“That’s a good idea.” Morgan praised, sitting at the far end of Jake’s desk to be part of the meeting. “Plus, we could do with one of your miners to check out our cave spot; maybe you could help set up some proper lighting so we can see? Bladder lanterns the Na’vi and we have don’t work as well since insects that are drawn to the lantern’s nectar don’t go that high up.”
“Maybe we send someone to stay and oversee the site? Wei could—” Moran spoke up but was interrupted
“No, he needs to be with people and have our support.” Xavier shot down immediately with a surprising amount of passion “We need him here.”
“Not a conversation for now.” Xanthe coughed, putting a stop before anyone could protest. “how feasible would eight be, is all I’m asking.”
There was a pause from all camps. Nadine was frowning but running the numbers no doubt on fuel consumption, distance and other variables.
“No,” Ming called after a minute. “At best, we can do six shack grabs in a single night. We can’t do it during the day. We’ll need to refuel once. If we try for eight, which can take up to eight hours’ worth of trips given where the last two marked ones you want are and our travel routes, there’s a chance Quaritch can let a scorpion run a patrol ship go at dawn if he suspects some activity.”
“But is it possible for other nights?”
“Yes, but our fuel refinery is very crude but it passes. It’s just slow at the moment.” Kendra said, “We’ll need you guys to start pitching in and getting us burnfibre for us to drain the resin to make the fuel. If more is provided, then we’ll be less limited on how much we can do. Also, we’ll need more spare parts for ship and refinery maintenance.”
“We’ve got a tent up pitched up in the mountains. I think more hands would be better to inventory shit once the drop-offs have happened and we need a better system to manage redistributions based on needs and projects.” Jake input after a moment. “There can be food within date and non-perishables. That also needs to be accounted for. We need people who have allergens to let us know what not to put in a food pile and not to risk cross-contamination. I personally can’t eat nuts, but I can be around them. Some people won’t have that tolerance.”
“Will do. We should also consider if Pandoran food, like their nuts, will carry the same allergen effects or not. Does your avatar have a nut allergy, Sully?”
“No, but I don’t know if that’s because Tommy didn’t. Kinda odd for twins but… well I lucked out on those cards.”
Nadine leant over Jake’s desk to speak. “Does anyone want to share any allergens we should be aware of? In case we do something that might trigger a reaction? I work with our food at Hometree and I really don’t wanna kill anyone. We’ve got earth food growing right now and I do plan to add those when they’re ready.”
“I’m allergic to Copper,” Xavier called, “it’s not strictly a food concern but I’d rather not come up in hives if you cook in a copper pot or something.”
Nadine leaned over the desk and grabbed her tablet to make a note. “Okay, no copper cooking. Any foods to avoid?”
“Shellfish,” Eliza called out. Alejandra echoed that as well before they chuckled.
“Any dairy or wheat concerns? We have pasta and I can make pasta now so that’ll be something I can serve.”
“Well, the Na’vi don’t have dairy tolerances, that’s a no-brainer but they do make plant-based milk.” Jake pointed out.
“Actually, Jake, it’s the Omatikaya that don’t have milk tolerances. Na’vi as a species can build a tolerance if exposed to milk long enough.” Maria said brightly, “I heard that there’s a clan in the west called the Zeswa that has milk and cheese as a stable in their diet. The Omatikaya don’t need to milk their animals for milk or protein.”
“Ooh.” Nadine perked up at that and Jake could see she was wondering if that milk was edible for humans.
“Neither me nor Bree can have a general anaesthetic. I don’t have it as severely as Bree so while I could be relatively fine, she will go into anaphylactic shock. Found out the hard way with her.” Kung called after a moment
“Oh god,” Eliza whispered but he hoped she too was taking notes.
“Also, doc for your notes, I’m allergic to penicillin and Wei’s allergic to latex, mangos and pears,” Xanthe called in. “That covers our group with allergens.”
“I can’t have nuts either” Ruby piped up. “But I do wanna try them in my avatar. Can we discuss this with Mo’at? I’m sure if my avatar has a reaction and we’re prepared, then we know for sure if our avatars have inherited those conditions or not.”
“I’ll add that to our discussion board.” Jake made his own notes.
“Do we even have a discussion board?” Zeke whispered but his voice still carried through the radios.
Jake smiled a little. “No, but it’s not a bad idea. You guys could keep a board for each of your camps and come to me with them. I could represent the camps to discuss anything or problems that may come up with Eytukan. He respects me to open discussions for smooth sailings between us and the clan. If not with him, Mo’at’s another good option.”
There were a few confirmations at that before they circled back to the shack theft again, going over when it would happen (tonight was most called for), who would be on the Samson’s aiding in the grabs and who would be at the mountain cave. One member of each camp would participate (Bree would once again camp at the mountains; even living in a metal shack now, Kung was too paranoid) to help and to inventory the stuff in the morning.
They were nearing the end of their discussions before there was a knock on the shack window and Neytiri’s face was peering in. Jake waved her in but didn’t interrupt Eliza’s discussion with medical aid, Morgan moved to shut the airlock door on the inside for Neytiri to enter safely.
“We have some of those herbs in our area that Mo’at showed me that I can get you to study more in-depth,” Jake said, as the airlock hissed and opened and Neytiri crouched in curiously but took the hint to not speak up. “I know people with allergies have Epipens but when they run out, we need to try alternatives that are just as effective. I’ll talk to Mo’at about that, I don’t think allergies are a topic you’ve spoken to the Tsahìk about yet,” he added to his list.
“I’ll speak to her when I can.” Eliza promised, “If anyone’s got any data banks on studies of the plants I was on about, compile them for me, please. That’d save me a lot of time. Medical research wasn’t my thing but I’m willing to do it.”
There were a few agreements made before Kendra’s camp hung up to get back to their camp’s duties and planning for their upcoming evening event, as did Ruby and Alejandra’s group. Kung however didn’t.
“Sully, Bree wants a word.”
“Shoot.”
“Yay,” Bree’s voice was quiet and distant before he heard something of wheels before she spoke, now at the radio. “Jake, do you think you can talk to some of the wood shapers for me? I need help with a few of my projects but… the woodguy is really hard to talk to without him brushing me off. It’s… he’s kinda scary. He looks like he’s three seconds from stabbing me with his wood shaping knife if a human looks at him wrong…”
“What do you need?”
“I don’t know… someone who’s willing to teach humans how to work with wood. I want to make books and… I need a book press and how to make small thin planks for book covers. That sort of thing.”
Jake huffed, running a hand through his locks of grown-out hair. Woodshapers. That was unpleasant still but… he could understand her fear.
“I’ll… talk to Eytukan about that. Ateyo shouldn’t make you feel scared. It’s unfair to chase anyone away from their interests.” Of course, it wouldn’t be just about Bree but all of them. They all should have that chance, he had just… it was easier to focus on what he was doing than focus on what he wasn’t wanting to do.
“Thank you. Also, I’m still working on making parchment since you gave me all that hide. It’s almost done if you’re interested.”
“Sure, let me know if you need any more hide. We still got a ton from recent hunts.” He didn’t know what he’d do with parchment but he was sure he’d think of something.
They made their goodbyes before Jake made his last new notes on his tablet and set it down.
“I’ll check through our cook pots, and make sure they’re not copper or at risk.” Nadine mused, sliding on her wheelchair to get her leg that was on charge and slipped that on. She passed her farewell to Neytiri as she clunked out.
“I’ll make plans for the shack reconstructions. I know my way around them a lot more than they do.” Morgan decided. “Still, moving airlocks aren’t gonna be easy.” Morgan rose to his feet as well. “I’ll give N’deh, Jer and Kim a heads-up on what we talked about.”
“Alright.” Jake ran a hand over the stubble on his chin, though smiled at Neytiri as Morgan left. “How'd it go? A healthy baby?”
Neytiri nodded, leaning forward with clear contentment. “Very, so far a little girl until told otherwise. Both parents must remain close until the child is mature to leave their Tsalnu pod. The mother is recovering well and is pleased to see her child healthy while their last part of development continues.”
“How long until….”
“Typically a week and a half. Sometimes longer. A month is often a concern so a Tsahìk must decide to wait or to remove the child if necessary. Sometimes a child may be too weak to initiate the pod’s softening.” Neytiri explained with warmth.
“Wow.” Jake let out a steady breath. “Here human babies come into the world, premature, kicking and screaming and covered in their mother’s blood.”
Neytiri's brow raised in some amusement. “Yes, my mother informed me of our birthing differences.”
Jake chuckled. “Sorry about not coming out. A meeting. We’re stealing another few link shacks tonight. A lot of organising and making sure people get what they need. The new group want a lot given they’re lacking what we have.” He gestured around to their beds and desks, wondering about the set-up but patient to wait and see.
“It sounded important, I’d like to help like last time but I heard medical concerns?”
“Nothing too concerning. Some humans can’t eat certain foodstuffs, contact with certain minerals or medical drugs without their bodies rejecting it. We were making sure no one accidentally winds up killing each other out of ignorance.”
Neytiri’s head tilted. “Nothing too concerning?” She quoted a little dryer in tone. “I don’t think toying with death is ‘not a concern’, Jake?”
Jake hummed a little. “As long as we’re all aware of possible threats, there’s no concerns.”
Neytiri didn’t look thrilled before she took a deep breath. “I need to leave, my head is getting light.”
“Of course, I’ll link up.” Time to continue on with the day after all.
Outside, when he descended down from his mauri, he could see Neytiri taking deep breaths contently though he watched as her head turned and her eyes seemed to linger on him with vivid interest.
“You’ve added a pouch?” she noted, coming to point at his waistband where he had two hide pouches attached. The first he had simply had basic sling ammo (his sling was also around his waist like a belt which sat at a slight angle) and the other was empty.
“Gifts from N’deh. He knew I was missing pockets.” He chuckled warmly, allowing her to poke the ammo pack curiously. “So, we training today?”
“Yes, your bow.” Neytiri nodded to his training bow. “Another hunt.”
“Alright.”
“We speak Na’vi when out. This will help your practice.”
“Yes…< I mean yes, teacher>” Jake corrected himself as her side-eye, giving a little salute.
-
Neytiri had been swift in getting him into action with his hunt and despite his best efforts of the afternoon training, a successful tracking but he didn’t manage a kill. Neytiri still seems pleased with his efforts on their journey back.
In some part, Jake knew it was him being self-conscious given his new attire. A proper hunt in new clothes. The loincloth, he was used to but it was still a little odd every so often to feel like he had a wedgie on an important outing.
Jake had painted up his avatar with the usual paints to cover his eyebrows and forehead with a few patterns here and there along his body but nothing too detailed; he wanted inspiration to hit him in the face. He too had a knife holster on and across his chest which was comfortable and was otherwise shirtless. He looked forward to earning a cummerbund after he got his Ikran. They hadn’t got their hand or feet covers made just yet but so far, it wasn’t quite needed.
It was a new physical change for him but he was glad that she was…understanding of his difficulties. Something as simple as a new attire shouldn’t have been such a massive deal and yet, it was.
“It’s not about the end result, as long as keep to what I have been teaching you. Hunters can come back empty-handed.” That was all Neytiri had said.
Still, he hoped to continue on with another hunt soon now he knew his flaws.
“<Thi-wait are we going to your resting space?>” Jake realised as he looked around and noticed it wasn’t familiar to the woods around his home. He knew this place enough to know what was here still.
Neytiri chuckled. “<Yes. I have something to show you. Sit up by the waterfall, I’ll join you in a moment.>”
Jake complied and sat at a small plateau of smooth rock close to the waterfall and waited. It was only a minute before Neytiri appeared from the cave underneath and this time, something small was in her hands.
“<Here,>” She sat down beside him with it. “<For you.>”
Curiously, he took the present and turned it about in his hands. It looked… mostly like leather straps with beaded latches, meant to hold something. The leather was strong and there looked to be sewn designs along two of the supportive straps that looked to be the ‘top’.
“<It’s beautiful but… what is this?>” Jake asked. He doubted it was bondage stuff, she didn’t know what it was and he wasn’t gonna tell her. Yet.
Neytiri giggled a little with fondness. “<I noticed that when we travel by wither Pa’li or Ikran, you cling onto your wheeled chair and you complained once that it aches your arms with your efforts to keep a hold of it. I made this to carry it for you. See here,>” She lent and touched another loop. “<This can be bound onto the harness of either mount. We can length the straps if you simply want to strap it to your back.>”
Jake’s breath paused fully as her words washed over him and he almost felt like crying. He felt… so damn touched that she had made not only the effort to think of that but to… make it too and with so much care and thought put into it; to be functional for his needs because he hated the difficulties of managing his wheelchair while trying to stay on the Pa’li. He never would ask the Na’vi to hold his chair for him on a ride if he could help it. A man had his pride and his chair was a major part of it.
It hadn’t even occurred to him that a carrier for his chair could have been an option.
Neytiri had gifted him the… wonderful and most thoughtful gift that he had… ever received.
Jake felt his eyes prickle with happiness pulling it to his chest like a child hugging a new favourite toy. He wanted to say thank you, to tell her how wonderful it was but… he couldn’t get his mouth to move. He felt…stunned. Happily stunned.
Neytiri’s face was soft, her hand coming to his shoulder with a soft touch and yet, she looked like she didn’t need his verbal response to simply know his gratitude.
In a way, he was glad.
-
Ongwi’s steps were silent as he stepped along the mossy branch of the tree. The dense shrubs in front on the decline made it hard to make an excellent shot from the floor so he needed to go higher to make his kill. Up ahead, feeding with unawareness of death so close was a yerik. Mature by the dark blue hide with red and white accent patterns. Stunning in a way that would certainly please the clan’s tanners for such a find.
It was facing towards him, it’s nasal cavity facing towards him and would be an easy shot. Ongwi lowered himself down to stabilise his balance, his tail flicking out to help as he brought his bow in front and lined up his arrow.
His breaths remained even as he pulled the sting back slowly towards his cheek and felt the soft tickle of his knuckle. The yerik’s head popped up from its grazing, its fans spreading out as it looked sharply to its left which gave him pause—
Then something from the undergrowth leapt out. A small mass of orange with black spots was the first thing he saw before the Yerik took off but it didn’t get far; the small creature seemed to easily outrace it and let with sharpened claws, a mouth of sharp teeth, four longer ones on its lower and upper jaw that clamped down into its hide leg. Claws broke the hide was ease and easily sliced the Yerik’s flesh. It wasn’t alone as a second creature seemed to appear to help.
In a pack of animals, like Nantang, they were typically more or less identical but even to his eye, the next creature was not the same; it’s body, while covered in fur was a grey, and white most predominantly but with dark spots and surprisingly large paws in comparison to the orange one and an extraordinary long fluffy tail.
The grey one dove and sunk its teeth into the Yerik’s throat and thankfully ended its suffering but the two quickly began to devour, pulling its hide open to access the flesh underneath and allowing Ongwi the chance to examine the two predators.
Unlike anything he had ever seen. The Orange was taller than the grey, but it was far slimmer and had longer legs, its tail shorter and less fluffy than the other; clearly a chasing creature. Its face, when not covered in blood had large dark amber eyes that were lined with dark lining that lined down from its tear duct down to its upper jaw. Short but rounded ears on top of its head. Its nose was triangular, similar to that of Na’vi.
The grey was smaller but its build was chunkier and had more weight to its paws, its ears had a slight of a point to the tips but otherwise remained rounded but what stood out was the large blue eyes the creature had, locked on with its meal.
The only thing he didn’t see on either of them was a Kuru. Severed from Eywa, a pitiful existence that often needed an arrow to end such pain of disconnection but neither of them seemed to act too aggressively like the few the Aranahe had seen of Severed Viperwolves. In fact, both didn’t seem to get into each other’s way or fuss as they consumed their prey. Focused on the hunt and feeding. No other emotion but to fill an empty stomach. No pain or anger in their eyes.
They were not of the Kinglor forest, which was clear by their fur colourings alone. It didn’t match the forest to hide. Had they migrated or been chased out of their natural habitats by the sky people?
Ongwi debated if escape was necessary; he shouldn’t be too concerned if both ate well, they’d not see him as prey but that would be if he was caught. Leaving was the sensible thought; most predators did not take well to another being so close. As most as he was curious, he had no wish to be perceived as a threat to creatures he knew little of. It would be a shame to kill them.
His debate didn’t last too long as the orange’s head lifted towards him, making him pause as it’s eyes narrowed, letting out a purred sound. The grey paused, looking at Orange and then towards him before they both grabbed a jawful of its prey (a hind leg) and easily tore it off and both booked it back into the undergrowth.
He stared after them, down to the mauled and half-eaten carcass then he began to follow; not at a running speed but enough to follow the paw-prints within the soil and broken trails. Their scent smelt foreign and easy to follow.
Ongwi followed them for five minutes the trail, stopping at a broken branch that provided a clump of stark white hairs which he took and folded them into a leaf for safekeeping. No orange fur but this white fur should provide Ka’nat with proof of evidence of these creatures. The scent disappeared over a stream and while he found the paw tracks, they ended at a clearing where… sky people's feet seemed to appear in the mud in inconsistent patterns as if they had run around first. Without those strange foot coverings, he had heard a lot about, the five tiny toes were easy to make out and seemed to vanish into the moss; clearly with careful intent to not leave a track.
As much as he tried to scope out the area, he had no other leads. Despite the frustration, he knew he had to return back to Hometree. Inform their hunters of these new creatures. If anything, to ensure they didn’t get hunted as a result but… if they could capture, they could learn more of them. Why did they not have a Kuru and still be at peace?
-
“Shit. Shit, shit shit!” Anqa hissed as she hurriedly washed her face free from blood first before her hands, doing what she could to get the blood out from under her nails as Priya hurriedly collected their clothes and masks from their hiding spot.
“That was too close.” Priya agreed, tossing her a towel as well. It was a simple set-up they had decided to put in a few days ago now. A crate held their things, dental caps, clothes, masks, shoes, cleaning supplies and a mirror. Simply it was put under a large tree, gaps too small for a Na’vi but something that they could slip in and out in either form.
Their first trip out and they almost fuck it up. Anqa had hoped this session would have led to them keeping that whole Hexapead but no. Still, a leg each and some for Jax was better than nothing. He had no other form so he had to eat with that they hunted for him. He had stayed to cover for their absence, probably for the better given the interruption. God only knew what the Na’vi would think if they saw a ‘sky person’ feasting like an ‘animal’.
Anqa knew the Aranahe knew about their presence in their forest courtesy of the Sarentu kids but no official contact had been made; only the kids came and went if they weren’t already staying at the Hometree.
“Wrap the legs. We can store the other one for later and give Jax his meal now. He’s probably salivating over a picture of a roast ham.” Anqa said, drying off and hurriedly pulled her clothes on. Maybe they should start forgoing shoes? Claim some good excuse back at Refuge? “This should last us a few days but we’ll need to hunt again. Pills ain't gonna cut it anymore.”
“I still have a Samson. I can fly out further out to hunt. Less likely for Aranahe hunters to find us.” Anqa suggested, slipping her mask back on and was glad to see Priya just about done as well. “Let’s go.”
-
Jake’s mood continued to be bright as the day went on and their training came to an end before, evening came yet Neytiri vanished once to let her parents know of their plans for stealing the shacks and returned when dawn was closing in.
In his avatar, and through the radio, they kept in touch as Nadine flew to their meet-up spot in the mountains for final checks and everyone volunteering with a Dreamwalker was following the same routine as last time; Dreamwalkers do a sweep, debug and let the humans run the internal check and start collecting up any external boxes. Fix the cabling and then off.
Despite not having done a twenty-four-hour watch of the chosen sites, there was doubt the chosen sites were occupied which made it all the quicker to get to task as night fell and Jake led Nad’s Samson with Ashely (in avatar form) Xanthe and Xavier, Zeke was piloting Ruby was with Zane (both in avatars), Kung and Alejandra. Ming was also piloting with Morgan but would take on Ruby once she had a shack. Remaining at the mountainside for their deliveries were Bree, Kendra and Marcus.
Given the extra shacks than last time and thus extra time, it was decided that everyone would sleep at the mountains, pilots, and ships for the night as well and they’d all get stuff moved to camps the following night once everything was split up and divided.
Neytiri however would have to return to Hometree for sleep.
Still, it made for an interesting journey as they set out as a three Samson squad in search of their target shacks under the starry night with an Ikran following behind.
It was just like last time, Jake and Ashely jumped off first, scaring away sleeping animals and worked together to locate and disable the tracker before locating the cables as Xanthe checked inside and Xavier helped Jake with the outside boxes and disconnected the second shack (they had chosen all with dual shacks for this). Ming took the shack with Ruby and took off back towards the mountains with Neytiri as her guide.
Jake took the second shack as Zeke followed as a guide and set it down in its designated spot.
After the second trip, they had to stop at the mountains for Nadine to refuel so Jake waited patiently but thankfully, Zeke and Ming would take the last trip as they had enough for the last two.
He could feel his Dreamwalker was tired and the temporary light the cave crew had put up into the cave was a better improvement to see everything. The tent was for the people to rest, although he had heard Bree was sleeping in a deactivated link bed because of its comfort levels (he didn’t blame her for that; they were really comfy).
The others were already snooping and moving some of the shit out of the new shacks and into the cave but due to their agreement, they had to wait for everyone and go through inventory checks before serious claims could be made.
Jake was debating on unlinking when a voice in the low light pulled his attention to see a small figure scurry out of the latest shack a few metres away and straight towards him
“Hey Jake, give this a blow!”
Jake’s attention turned to the…black, whistle that was handed to him by Kendra. It was small in his Dreamwalker’s hands; shaped like some fancy skull with a headdress on which…distantly reminded him of the décor he had seen at Halloween or Day of the Dead festivals (which was one time on a film Nadine had him watch back in the day). The whistle looked to be made of plastic of sorts and from the texture, 3D printed.
Curiously, Jake brought it to his lips and blew hard… only to be met with a horrific screech that went straight up his spine, his tail shooting up and he recoiled a little, pulling the whistle from his lips and the sound dropped instantly.
Kendra began to snigger happily. “Your ears went up!”
There was vivid movement as movement as a few tired and grumpy faces turned his way but he just grinned at them sheepishly until a few decided to go to the tent. Unfortunately, Neytiri also seemed to have returned; the distant sounds of the other engines echoing their near arrival.
“What was that screaming?!” Neytiri looked startled as she jumped off Seze’s back, her ears on high alert as she peered around them. “Was someone hurt?!”
“This!” Jake held up his new favourite toy. “Aztec Death Whistle.”
Neytiri’s shocked face morphed into being both unimpressed to done within a second. “Death whistle?”
“Aptly named, I think.” Jake chuckled. “I wonder if there’s any more”
“There are a ton,” Kendra grinned, producing another from her pocket “We can’t blow these at the moment with our masks but I wonder why there’s so many. It’s a Zoology shack. Study of animals, seems odd.”
“Maybe they were trying out new dog whistles?” Jake said, not entirely serious but when animals and whistles are in the same boat, often it’s related. He was sure once the data banks were searched tomorrow, they’d get a clear sign of what this was all about.
Kendra blinked. “Think they could scare Pandoran animals?”
“Maybe we should try it out?” Jake suggested. It seemed like a good idea to test the theory out. If they were right and it was an animal scare, then the humans could have these to help ward away unwanted wildlife quickly and without bloodshed or arrows. They could explore more freely without that fear.
Jake took another breath and blew hard and the demonic screeching once again graced all of their ears.
Neytiri flinched at the sound of the whistle, turning wide-eyed. “That is horrific! Sounds like so much pain!”
A few distant calls of complaints echoed before Kung radioed in despite being in the tent.
“No more demonic prayers, Sully. If you start crawling on the ceiling, I will let the others shoot you.”
“Do we have to wait for that?”
Jake felt an idea spring to mind, a smirk coming to cross his face as he eyed Neytiri. “Tiri, do you mind not mentioning these whistles to Tsu’tey or your parents?” He asked slyly, “I mean… I’d love to demonstrate this little thing more… personally tomorrow.”
Neytiri’s eyes turned, narrowed in confusion then she seemed to light up as she caught on to his implication. Her fingers plucked the whistle from his fingers, tilting it for a better view but the curl of her lips seemed to grow a little. “Perhaps. My father and Tsu’tey will be together tomorrow until noon for his training by the Olo'eyktan.” She suggested, handing it back slowly. “You can catch either one of them for…informing them of this sky people device.”
Jake's grin grew. “Then I shall certainly make sure they know all about it.” He tucked the whistle into his side pouch for safekeeping as Ming’s Samson came into view and he gently waved his arms to help signal her back into place.
Tomorrow was gonna be a good day indeed.
The winter between December 1984 and January 1985 was particularly harsh in Italy, characterized by increasingly lower temperatures. Between 13 and 17 January 1985, a depression centered on the Corsican Sea caused what is still remembered in Milan today as the snowfall of the century or the snowfall of '85, constituting the heaviest snowfall recorded in Milan in the 20th century. The snowfall caused serious damage. After four days of real storm, January 17th 1985 the Sports Hall collapsed in Milan due to the excessive weight of the snow that had accumulated on the roof. In this certainly not festive atmosphere, I received a call from an engineering company in Milan, INTECH, an already a supplier of services to SNAMPROGETTI, with whom I soon agreed to leave for Bahrain.
From the SNAMPROGETTI office in San Donato, the Head of HR office Mr. Cincotta reassured me:  ''It's a temporary destination, just a few months, waiting that construction of new Agadir International Airport will start … don't worry…'' I stayed there for 4 years…….
Mind you, not that I minded: Bahrain was a liveable place (drinkable, in the language of shipbuilders) especially because it also allowed families to reach the employees involved in the project. I then left at the beginning of March 1984, with a flight via Kuwait. I arrived at Manama airport and believe it or not there was someone waiting for me! A local guy holding a board with my name written on it almost correctly: Brino Sirino….
Bahrain is a small Emirate in the Persian Gulf (Kaleejj el Arabi) made up of a main island and a myriad of uninhabited islets. It is the ''poorest'' Gulf state, relative to its surrounding neighbors. Above all, Saudi Arabia provides the Emirate with considerable economic aid as the ruling house of Bahrain, like the Al Saud, is of the Sunni faith, in spite to a majority Shiite population The Saudis would never allow a Shiite regime to be established 25 km from the Saudi coast with the approval of the ''Great Enemy'' Iran. And then Bahrain was a sort of ''playground'' for Saudis looking for entertainment just outside their front door. This therefore explains the reason for the economic support to Bahrain by the Saudis. For instance, one of the largest oil well in Saudi waters has always been exploited for free by the Bahraini oil industry. The construction of the 23 km long bridge that connects Saudi Arabia to the island of Bahrain was financed by the Saudis. The free sale of alcohol in Manama by shops managed by a company belonging to the ruling Bahraini family is another concession aimed at helping the Emir Al Khalifa's coffers. In 1986, shortly before the opening of the Dahran – Manama bridge to traffic, King Fahad proposed to the Emir Sheik Eissa the prohibition of alcohol sale, promising to compensate the Emir for the lost earnings: an offer returned to the sender. On top of all this, about 50% of the Southern territory of the island of Bahrain is off limits, due to the largest naval base leased to the US in the Gulf. However, Manama has since then been a modern city, full of skyscrapers, luxury hotels and shopping centres.
AWALI I was housed in Awali, a village of wooden houses built by the Americans of Caltex in 1939, when the first refinery in Bahrain (and the entire Persian Gulf) was built. Someone later told me that around 1942 some Italian planes departing from a base in Egypt tried to bomb the refinery, which produced fuel for the English army. Not having enough fuel to guarantee the return, the planes dropped their bombs into the sea just before the island of Bahrain, and aborted the mission. The village of Awali is located almost in the center of the main island of Bahrain, and its wooden houses are reminiscent of those from the Lassie TV series in every way, including anti-mosquito doors. The houses are 2 and 4 bedrooms, with a large living-dining room, kitchen and two bathrooms. I was assigned to a small 4 bedroom house, but when I got there I was the only occupant. The village also had a club with a partially covered swimming pool (to prevent the summer sun from making the water too hot) and tennis courts, to which we had free access.
RONCI ATHOS A few days after my arrival, around 3.00 AM, I heard some noises: the sound of a car stopping, doors slamming, and than someone throwing something (I than saw that it was suitcases…) inside the house. , on the wooden floor. Then the door of my room suddenly open, and someone said:  Are you asleep?  Before you arrived I was asleep…….  However...... - says the guy - I'm not going to stay here…….tomorrow I'll talk to the HR and then I'll see .....  Okay…. I say…. do as you like but let me sleep now….
For the record, Mr. Ronci Athos – Umbrian from Narni – was still there in 1993, in the place that 8 years earlier he had said he would leave as soon as possible….
THE PROJECT Our client was called GPIC - Gulf Petrochemical Industries Company - a mixed Bahraini, Saudi and Kuwaiti capital company - and was part of the economic aid package from the rich Gulf countries to the ''poor'' relative of Bahrain. Later, at the time of the commissioning and start up of the plants - we would have transformed the acronym into Gruppo Pensionati Italiani Comerint, given the average age of the people that the then company 'ENI had sent to proceed with the commissioning of the plants. The project was in its final phase, and was directed by none other than the P.I. Manoli Benito Italo. Bahrain would be his last construction site personally managing, before becoming Director of the CSO Service of SNAMPROGETTI. The works were even ahead of schedule, so SNAMPROGETTI enjoyed a lot of credit with the Client. Upon delivery of the plant, the Client gifted an extra bonus of 4 million dollars to SNAMPROGETTI for its performance. The credit was than canceled in 1990, during the first Gulf War. GPIC invited SNAMPROGETTI, BECHTEL and UHUDE to provide an initial feasibility study for a urea plant to be built alongside the existing ammonia and methanol plants. BECHTEL replied that she was not interested, SNAMPROGETTI sent a fax requesting an advance of 11,000 USD for the preliminary study. The Germans from HUDE, sensing the deal, in the midst of the Gulf War, sent a representative to Bahrain to discuss the possibility of building the urea plant. In 1992 the belated SANMPROGETTI envoy to Manama was detained at the entrance gate of the plant for a couple of hours, only to be informed that GPIC had officially commissioned UHUDE with the preliminary study.
COMMISSIONING & START UP The long phase of pre-commissioning, commissioning and start-up of the plants soon began. Which were built on a so-called reclaimed land (an artificial island) created by dredging the shallow seabed, characteristic of the Bahraini island. The artificial island - equipped for safety reasons with an outer gate and an inner gate - was connected to the mainland by a causeaway approximately 3 kilometers long, and a second causeaway joined the island to the loading arms of the products, 10 kilometers further into the sea. This is to allow ships to carry out loading operations in complete safety, without the risk of running aground in the shallow seabed. There were many wrecks of ships stranded along the channel dug by the open sea up to the port of Manama - this much to the happiness of the divers, given that the wrecks had been transformed into sanctuaries of Persian Gulf tropical fish. However, I must say a word to describe the characters who are part of the commissioning – start up. These particular people, who believe they are a sort of ''NASA scientists'' intent on launching the SPACE SHUTTLE into space. As soon as they arrived at site their aim was: ''Okay, get rid of Construction people, we're here now''. The fact is that, apart from 3 or 4 of them who really knew what they were doing and were experts in the difficult process of putting the plants into operation (very dangerous indeed) all the others followed suit: ''they claimed to know'' and the less they knew, the more they pretended they were knewing. I met someone who, as soon as they heard someone approaching, started to talk about chemical formulas, operating pressures, and so on, just to put on airs. In any case, within 3 months the start up team had managed to get the two plants up and running, even if the (rhetorical) question that was circulating was - Did you make the methanol?'' ''no…I didn't…So who did it?? No one knows.... ''
Tawfeeq Mohammed Rasul Almansoor - GPIC President The President of GPIC, however, did not seem entirely satisfied, and he demonstrated it with a series of actions that were surprising to say the least. One day Mr. Tawfiq arrived at high speed at the outer gate driving his metallic blue Rolls Royce. The presence of smat guy on the guard post prevented him from ending up against the bars at the outer check point.
Mr Tawfiq continued on the causeway at full speed and the inner gate guard, warned by radio by his colleague at the outer gate, promptly raised the bars. The President's Rolls entered the area of the Administrative offices, where he finally stopped. Tawfiq got out of the car in a rage, and ordered the Security Chief who met him to organize a meeting within 15 minutes. Participants in addition to him were the Security Chef, the Director of COMERINT and the Security Advisor. We mortals later learned that the Security Chef – an British guy, former officer in Hes Majesty's army, had been fired on the spot – Reason given by Mr. Tawifiq:
''Two gates were opened for me and I was able to drive my car into the plant – and this was because at the sight of my Rolls Royce the guards thought I was driving the car. What if he was a terrorist? What if I suddenly went crazy and wanted to attack the plant? What if I had been kidnapped by terrorists who were hiding in the car filled with explosives??'' (I remember that the Rolls Royce was equipped with tinted mirror windows which did not allow anyone to see who was driving the car.) A few days later, a second episode, again with Mr. Tawifiq as absolute protagonist. He had gone between the Main Control Room and Plant Laboratory, in a fairly hidden corner of the plant, and had broken the glass of one of the fire alarms that send a signal to the Fire Department control room. He than set off the stopwatch on his Rolex Platinum Diamond Pearlmaster to see how long it would take for the firefighters to arrive. After 11 interminable minutes - I would like to point out that the Fire Station was about 700 meters from the place where Mr. Tawfiq was stationed - the firefighters arrived to find that it was a false alarm. Again an urgent meeting was called, where this time the HSE manager lost his job. The reason for such a delay – which according to Tawfiq could have led to a disaster in the event of a real fire – was that on the synoptic panel of the fire brigade control room it was not possible to identify precisely where the alarm had went off. Just a week after the episode of the false fire, the start-up of the plants had been successfuly done. The plant was even proding more ammonia and methanol than expected, around 1,200 tons per day per product, instead of the 1,000 tons expected. But many of the ''COMERINT Pensioners'' who had participated in the commissioning were still circulating in the plant. As they say in Southern Italy, ''they were mugging''. Obviously COMERINT was looking for all the plausible excuses to keep them in service, given the daily rates with which they were invoiced to the Customer. (an average of $1,200/day per person). The situation between COMERINT and GPIC had become very tense, with daily requests from the latter to demobilize the technicians. One day Tawfiq lost patience, and went to the Main Control Room - still dressed in the traditional white disdasha, ghutra on his head, he surprised a swarm of Italians having coffee, talking about football, playing on the computer. Tawfiq, who had been taken like an ordinary local, turned to the bystanders waving his arms in the Arab manner and said:  ''What is this? Coffee shop''?  The shift manager, at that moment sitting on the desk with a cup of coffee in his hand and his legs dangling, stood up and in a benevolent manner, took Tawfiq by the arm (a very serious mistake as per Arab habits) pointed to a door at the end of the corridor and told him :  Shouff (look) coffee shop for Arab is there, at the end of corridor – accompanying it all with a laugh. Tawifiq, according to bystanders, didn't show any sign of upset - he left the Control Room, called the Italian Director on the phone. Mr Fiorentino, COMERINT top manager. Mr Tawfiq ordered that all those present at the unfortunate episode were boarded on the first plane to Italy. The offices in the North wing of the Control Room were closed until further notice. But where the President of GPIC gave his best was at the final meeting with Construction Director Benito Italo Manoli and the entire SAMPROGETTI staff present. During the meeting, numbers of questions were raised which mainly concerned the safety of the systems. At a certain point Mr. Tawfiq turned directly to the Italian Doctor Mr. Busonero asking :  Doctor, in case of explosion of one or more tanks of ammonia or methanol, either due to a terrorist attack, or due to an accident, what could be the consequences?
Dead silence in the meeting room… gazes of all those present frantically crossing each other… Mr. Manoli trying to communicate via brain waves with Doct. Busonero, while coughs and noises of chairs moving rang out in the room…. ..and finally the Doctor, red in the face and with drops of sweat running down his forehead (despite the air conditioning being set to 19 degrees C – Tawfiq's favorite temperature) Doct. Busonero replied: - Well…Mr. Tawifiq…with a prevailing wind from the South-East to the North-West, the inhabitants of Manama would have from 7 to 10 minutes to recommend each one's soul to God…''
It was freezing in the meeting room, no one said a word, everyone was waiting for the President's counter-reply. Tawfiq stood up and nodded to Mr. Manoli who followed him into President's private office. The next day there was no trace of Doct. Busonero. We learned that he had been put on a plane to Rome before midnight, the deadline that Tawfiq had indicated to Mr. Manoli. Contrary, Doct. Busonero would have been arrested for telling the truth.
The real story based on the life of the richest man in the world and the first billionaire John D Rockefeller__
At the age of twenty-five, he owned America’s largest refinery.
At the age of just one, he became the world's largest oil reformer.
He owned 90 percent of America's oil by the age of 38.
At the age of 50, he became the richest person in America.
But, at the age of 53, he fell ill. His whole body was broken in pain and all his hair fell out. In this trouble, the billionaire of the world could have bought anything if he wanted. But, he couldn't digest anything except soup and biscuits.
One of his associates wrote that he could not sleep, could not even smile. Nothing in life matters to him anymore. His specialist doctors said he would live at most a year. He spent those years in misery.
As his end approached, one morning he realized he couldn't take all the money with him. A man who was handling his business had no control over his life. The only way he had left.
He called his lawyers, accountants and managers and said he would donate his wealth to hospitals and research projects.
Rockefeller created an institution for research work. The same organization invented the treatment of diseases such as pancillin, malaria, TB and diphtheria.
The surprising thing is that as he started investing his hard earned wealth in public welfare, he began to recover.
At age 53, he thought he wouldn't survive, but he lived to age 98.
He has started donating his wealth for the betterment of society.
Rockefeller wrote in his diary before he died...
*Almighty has taught that everything belongs to God, I am just a means of completing his works. My life was a long holiday in this world, full of activities and fun. "*
In Lieu of Twitter Going Dark
I wasn’t intending on doing this again on Tumblr, but given what could happen with Twitter, and people’s interests, I figured I would do a big charity thread for as much as I can fit in a post. I may have to split them into multiples, at which point I will edit this one to provide links to the others.
If you find this type of information important and want to learn about new charities (or submit others) I have a discord server that I will also link to in this to join. As always, the goal of this is to showcase places to donate your money or other resources to. Again, they might need more than money! Maybe they need a social media manager. Maybe they need someone else to offer rides or information. If you find yourself in a position to do something but you’re broke don’t let the money stop you.
What do I think Of Biden, Now, As President? (A Question I Accidently deleted)
1st of all, I am sorry to whoever asked this as I accidently deleted your question, hopefully you will see this... Once again I hate talking politics so instead of going down a laundry list of things of why I think Biden is the worst President we've had in the last 20 or so years. I'm just going to start with one topic.
GAS PRICES
I believe Biden directly controls the gas prices by the policies he pushes. Such as shuttering the pipeline, reducing refinery capacity and sanctioning 43% of the world's natural gas and oil supply.
They claimed gas prices were high because of Russia right? Wrong. The majority of the gas price hikes took place before russia.
They claimed the President has no control over Gas Prices. This statement is also incorrect. It is actually one of the issues where they have more control than most people. This is because the oil business is all about projection rather than supply and demand. Future Earnings and determining whether or when you’re going to drill or pull back. You will sometimes see gas prices drop depending on when someone comes into office just because of policies that may not be enacted for another year or two because they’re willing to invest knowing they’ll recoup it.
Now if you worked for a fossil fuel company what would you do if someone came into office threatening to shut down your company and claimed to enact policies that would greatly affect you, your profits, etc.
May 15th 2020
youtube
June 11th 2019
youtube
September 6th 2019 “I guarantee you, we are going to end Fossil Fuel!!!”
youtube
Biden has taken over 80 actions impacting or what would impact gas prices/fossil fuels. Largely against them. Most of them are executive orders.
Paris Climate Accord
He revoked the Keystone XL Pipeline (Keystone XL is different from Keystone)
He supported increases of $230,000,000,000 in taxes on oil
He reinstated the social cost of carbon metric
The Climate Change Order
Climate Financing
 Climate Financial risk
That’s to name a few, I’ll leave a link listing all the policies, executive orders, taken against fossil fuel.
Another false claim is that it is the result or “Bounce back” from Covid. Meaning more people are driving now than during Covid… The problem with that statement is there is no data to suggest that this is even remotely true. Again, if you look at the prices on that chart you will see the before and after Covid and it remained hovering around $2.50 a gallon. Look at when the steep increase took place
There is a false claim that under President Joe Biden there is actually more domestic drilling than President Trump. Really? The truth is Biden did approve more drilling permits at a whopping number of 4,881 in 2021 than Trump’s 4,631 permits issued in 2020. However, the permits issued under Biden are for leases sold mostly under Trump… See what I’m saying? It rolled over, they’re rollover leases. If this piece of information doesn’t matter to you then maybe this will…. The Biden Administration slashed the approvals of drilling in August 2021.
Permits Slashed: “The data suggest the administration wants to show it’s meeting its obligation to issue permits for existing leases.”
YOU HAVE YOUR ANSWER
Look, this is just one of his many failings but I've spent to long typing this out on just one topic that to disect his entire presidency and everything I believe he has done wrong would take me days and weeks to describe on this platform. That being said I'll speak briefly on inflation.
INFLATION
The CPI (Instrument to measure Inflation) went up 7.9% through february of 2022 which is the highest inflation rate for a quarter or month in 40 years.
youtube
If you do the math it is exactly 40 years since the embarrassment of Jimmy Carter where the CPI rose 13.5% in 1980. That number (13.5%) included the rising cost of housing. (Don’t know if you’ve noticed but that’s still kind of a problem today too) The numbers under Joe Biden (7.9%) does not include the rising cost of housing, so the inflation rate is actually 11%. These numbers are old and guaranteed to have risen at this time on December 30th 2022.
I DO NOT BEGRUDGE ANYONE WHO VOTED FOR HIM, I DO HOWEVER BELIEVE WE WERE BETTER OFF WITH TRUMP!
GOD BLESS!
Good afternoon TUMBLR - April 21th - 2024
''Mr. Plant has owed me a shoe since July 5, 1971."
Mohammedia, Morocco – 2002
It was beginning of June and I got a call from Rome: the kind Mrs. Sette - HR Representative of TECHNIP Italy - asks me if I am interested to on mission to Mohammedia, Morocco. Of course I am! Was my answer. A week later, I am summoned inside the mega headquarters of Technip Italia, in Rome, to carry out the medical examinations and sign the employment contract. At the time I had just bought a new car, an Alfa Romeo 147, so we organized a trip to Rome with my family. It was a pleasant trip and stay, and we had the opportunity to visit Sperlonga and Gaeta.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sperlonga.
Tumblr media
Gaeta.
I left for Casablanca at beginning of July, returning to work in Morocco after 11 years. I arrived at Mohammed V airport and with the ''excuse'' that Technip was aware of my past in Morocco, no one was there to welcome me. A Grand taxi took me to the Hotel Sabah as was previsiosly agreed - I would stay there for a few days, until I'll find a suitable accommodation. In the late afternoon I was joined by the Mission's Head, Mr. De Sanctis, a Roman guy, an elderly person with some walking problems. At dinner he explained to me that the team would be made up of a total of 4 people: a civil supervisor, a mechanic, and an electro-instrumental supervisor
THE PROJECT. The SAMIR refinery in Mohammedia, about 20 km north of Casablanca, was built by Italian Snamprogetti/SAIPEM in the '70s. The property had more recently been acquired by a Joint Venture between a Swedish Investment Fund and a wealthy Saudi investor. The new ownership had decided to modernize the complex, building new production plants next to the existing refinery. For this purpose, TECHNIP was contacted to follow up the partial demolition of the existing plants and part of the Tank Farm, and prepare the areas where the new plants would be built. Our mission was to supervise the demolitions of the tanks, and the preparation of the areas with selected materials capable of withstanding the considerable loads of the new installations. SAMIR had not yet appointed the Main Contractor of the new plants - a contract worth 316 million dollars - TECHNIP Italia had agreed to follow the preparatory works to try to ''get a foot in'' the refinery and undermine others competitors.
MISSION TASK FORCE. In addition to the aforementioned Mr. De Santis, the following people were part of the mission: Mr. Rinaldo Cozzi: originally from Cerro Maggiore (North of Italy). He was our electro-instrumental expert. A decent person, even if a little closed off. He only went out with us during the visits of the Technip manager Ing. Petrillo. I will meet Cozzi again in Shah – Abu Dhabi, where he had a position with SAIPEM pipeline. Mr. Mario Maggi, from Piacenza - a jovial and open guy, he was coming from a previous experience in Senegal. Expert in turbines, compressors etc, in truth he didn't have much to do since we were only talking about demolitions.
LIFE IN MOHAMMEDIA. Mohammedia is the seaside city of Casablanca. Equipped with somewhat old hotels, it is made up of residential areas of holiday villas built in the early 1980s. The city has therefore become a destination for medium-low level tourism, also following the construction of the refinery and the Power Plant overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.
LOGISTIC. After an initial period in which I slept in hotel, I found a decent oceanfront apartment through a real estate agency. Inserted in a beautiful park, the apartment was on the first floor of a holiday condominium. The local owner was living abroad, and had entrusted the agency with the task of managing the rent from the apartment. I really enjoyed it, and I stayed in the same apartment for the entire ten months of my stay in Mohammedia.
Tumblr media
Mr. De Sanctis lived in a villa on the Plage Manesmane.
Tumblr media
Mr. Cozzi in another house near De Sactis, while Maggi had chosen to stay secluded in a villa further inside the city.
SUB-CONTRACTOR The Contractor that would carry out the work was chosen directly by the Technical Management of the refinery. Mr. Berrada, the Site Manager was a competent and approachable young engineer. The history of this Company is intertwined in a curious and surprising way with the attack that King Hassan II suffered on 16 August 1972, when the Royal Boeing 727, returning from an official trip to France, was attacked by military jets of the Force Armee Royale. According to the reconstruction of the event, the plane was hit on one of the engines, but the pilot managed to make escape the jet unscathed, and thus saving the life of the Sovereign. That pilot's brother was the owner of a small building Contractor from Casablanca. The pilot's exploits made the fortune of his brother, who in a short time became one of the largest entrepreneurs in the construction sector in Morocco, going so far as to build the so-called ''Twin Towers'' of Casablanca, which with their height of 128 meters are have long been the tallest skyscrapers in Morocco.
Tumblr media
WORK PROGRESS. The rafinery plot was overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. The progress of the works was quite regular, the demolition of old tanks continued apace and so did the creation of new areas for the new plants. To the South of the plant, divided only by a reception wall, stood the coal power plant built in the 1980s by the Italian Cimi Montubi Group.
FLOOD DISASTER - NOVEMBER 2002. Everything went well until the beginning of November. Yes, it's true, sometimes we had some problems getting the refinery operators out of their offices before proceeding with their demolition. But it had been raining cats and dogs for three days, even though they told me it was the season. On a Saturday morning the SAMIR management received a call from a dam Director, located approximately 45 km away from the plant. The Director warned that since the water inside the artificial reservoir of Barrage Oued El Maleh had now reached the overflow point, it had been decided to open the gates of the dam, and let part of the water flow into the Oued El Maleh , whose course, after reaching the refinery, flowed into the Atlantic between the refinery itself and the Royal Golf Club. The Dam Director estimated that the flood wave would reach the refinery towards the late afternoon of the same day. As a precaution, operations at the plant should have been stopped. A consultation with Saudi ownership categorically ruled out shut down onthe entire complex. The costs of shut down, lost production, and start-up were the reasons given for refusing to stop operations. Never was a decision more wrong.
At 3.00 PM order had been given to leave the plant. The water from the Ouadi El Maleh had already overcome the barrier set up at the entrance to the plant, and was spreading throughout the area. The area of our offices, lower than the rest of the refinery, was already heavily flooded. We returned to Mohammedia with in mind the worried faces of the operators who were preparing to spend the night in the plant. It was around 9.45 in the evening when the first explosions were heard. I went out onto the apartment balcony and looked towards the South: I could see some flashes that lit up the dark night. Firefighter and Red Crescent sirens. And then an explosion louder than all the others: we then learned that a diesel tank had been blown up. We would find the roof of the tank thrown like a giant frisbee 150 meters away. The fire had attacked the power station, and triggered the explosion when the water reached the high voltage bars. Most of the utilities were destroyed that night. Thanks to the work of firefighters who also came from Casablanca, and of the refinery operators, the fire was contained and did not reach the fuel depot area where there were dozens of tanks full of oil and diesel: it would have been a Biblical disaster.
Two operators lost their lives in the accident, and numerous were injured. When the refinery was made safe, the highest authorities in Morocco came to visit, first and foremost King Mohammed VI. The refinery management asked us to participate in the damage assessment, alongside a specially established insurance team. At the end of the survey, which lasted weeks, the damages were estimated at 157 million dollars. During the cleaning operations from the mud that had invaded the entire area of the plant, many teams of volunteers showed up after King Mohamed VI's appeal on TV. What remained was the regret of a disaster caused once again by a decision dictated by mere selfishness. The questions I asked myself at the time was: ''In his country, would the Saudi owner of the refinery have made the same decision, that is, not to stop the plant?''
END OF MISSION. At the end of April, the enormous cleaning operation of the refinery had been completed, even if production had not been able to resume due to the enormous damage caused by the flood and the subsequent fire. Our work to prepare the areas was coming to an end, and the most disparate rumors were circulating about the name of the Main Contractor who would win the contract for the new installation. The sentiment was that they would not be awarded to TECHNIP Italia, regardless of our performance during the Early Works.
Italian Giant SAIPEM was awarded the project.
What is 3D Laser Scanning?
3D laser scanning is a process that captures the shape of physical objects or environments through laser beams. The technology operates by emitting laser pulses towards a surface and measuring the time it takes for the laser to bounce back. The result is a collection of data points, known as a point cloud, that forms a precise 3D representation of the scanned object or area.
The scanners can capture intricate details, from the complex textures of small objects to expansive environments like construction sites or entire buildings. Unlike traditional surveying methods, 3D laser scanning is fast, non-intrusive, and highly accurate, making it a go-to solution for many industries seeking exact measurements.
Key Applications of 3D Laser Scanning
Architecture and Construction
One of the most significant applications of 3D laser scanning is in the field of architecture and construction. The technology is used to create highly accurate digital models of buildings, construction sites, and other structures. These models assist architects, engineers, and construction teams in design, planning, and renovation processes. By scanning existing conditions, teams can reduce errors, ensure precise alignment, and avoid costly rework.
Moreover, construction sites benefit from continuous monitoring through 3D laser scans, allowing project managers to track progress, inspect quality, and ensure adherence to design plans. It also helps identify any discrepancies between the actual site and design models, reducing delays.
Manufacturing and Quality Control
In manufacturing, precision is critical, especially when dealing with complex parts and systems. 3D laser scanning helps manufacturers assess whether components meet design specifications by comparing them to digital models. It is also widely used in reverse engineering, where existing parts or products are scanned to create a 3D model for reproduction or modification.
Quality control processes also benefit from 3D laser scanning, as it allows for the detection of defects, deformities, or inconsistencies in products. This ensures that only high-quality components make it to market.
Heritage Preservation
For historical preservation, 3D laser scanning plays a vital role in documenting and conserving cultural heritage. This technology enables precise digital reconstructions of ancient structures, artifacts, and monuments, many of which may be at risk of deterioration due to time or environmental factors. The scanned models can be used for restoration projects, virtual exhibitions, or educational purposes, ensuring that historical treasures are preserved for future generations.
Oil and Gas Industry
In the oil and gas sector, 3D laser scanning is used for plant and facility management, as well as maintenance. Detailed 3D scans of oil rigs, pipelines, and refineries help engineers plan upgrades or repairs while minimizing downtime and avoiding hazards. Additionally, the scans assist in monitoring the wear and tear of equipment, ensuring safety and compliance with regulations.
Benefits of 3D Laser Scanning
The advantages of 3D laser scanning go beyond its ability to produce accurate digital models. Its non-invasive nature ensures minimal disruption to the surrounding environment, whether it’s a bustling construction site or a delicate archaeological dig. The speed at which it captures data drastically reduces the time needed for surveys and inspections, making it a cost-effective solution in the long run.
Furthermore, 3d Laser Scan To Cad promotes better collaboration between different stakeholders by providing an exact visual reference, which can be shared digitally. This improves communication and reduces the likelihood of misunderstandings during project execution.
