Hi! Fantastic question and thanks @powerful-owl for the referral. I am thrilled to share some information about my niche interest and profession!

So organ shoes are a helpful tool that many but not all organist wear to utilize the pedalboard on many organs. As seen below. It resembles a piano keyboard and the notes are the same. These are lower bass notes, think the bottom third of the piano.

However, organ pedalboards have developed in different ways over time and to make sure I include any European readers indo want to briefly mention that the above pedalboard is "AGO Spec" (Built to the official American Guild of Organists Standard Organ Console Specifications) a diagram of which is show below.

Organs don't have to follow these guidelines, but they do standardize organs so that playing on a different instrument than your typical setup is an easier transition.
The two things to note are that the keys are radial and concave to facilitate the natural reach of the feet as you move from up and down the pedals.
This is not how they always were because as organs that would be recognizable as such to our modern eye were first being built in Europe the literature didn't call for a lot of technical prowess on the part of the player and was mostly for bass support and additional interest.
Most pedalboards were flat like the one below.

As composers such as J.S. Bach and Buxtehude added more prominent rolls of the pedals to their compositions the instrument also became more complex to accommodate.
However it wasn't until the Romantic Era (nineteen century) that literature started requiring dedicated shoes that help many today.
You see composers (particularly the French) began wanting smooth connected playing rather than the baroque composers who favored more articulated styles.
This requires heel and toe pedaling techniques. Most performance practice for the baroque era only calls for toe.

The performer above is demonstrating this song the heel to hold down one pedal so that they can transition to the next one with very little to no gap in the sound.
So, back to organ shoes, what you actually asked about lol. 😂
They feature a 1.5" heel typically that helps to facilitate the above mentioned technique. The bottom of the shoe is also made of suede leather that makes it smooth to move across the pedals while also giving a tiny bit of grip once force is applied. The shoe is also very lightweight and slim to avoid pressing more than the desired pedal.
So there you have it. An introduction to the pedalboard and also why organist have special shoes!
I like them a lot but many wear regular shoes and plenty play in just socks so all of the above really comes down to preference.
I loved preparing this, I used to be a public school teacher so I apologize for the info dump/lecture, but I can't help myself 😅.

well i was in so much pain i called my mom after my doctors appointment earlier crying bc i didnt know what to do and then she drove a whole 2 and a half hours to help me and her and my gf helped me go to the emergency room and a receptionist was so nice walking me across the hospital very slowly bc i was limping (offered a chair but it wouldn't have helped ease my pain) and talking to me bc i accidentally went to the wrong area of the hospital at first.
and then i had to wait so long in so mcuh pain with my mom and gf but i got the surgery i thought i needed and the person who did it was so nice to me and was in awe of how much pain i could stomach (bc its kinda impossible to fully anesthetize for this procedure) and it was so so affirming also because both the surgeon and the person who did my intake were like 'idk why the doctor earlier today said to wait on seeing if you should get surgery for this you really really clearly immediately need surgery' and the surgeon was like 'also the antibiotic they gave you isn't great heres what antibiotic and other drug i think you should take instead' and gave detailed reasons why and just clearly had a lot of experience with my condition and it lined up with everything i thought i understood about it and they commented on how i seemed to be really in touch with my body and that the ultrasound showed that everything was a lot deeper than it already looked from the outside and it was misinformed for the previous doctor to be saying it wasn't bad enough yet or for expecting it to come to a head
and it was just really really helpful to have my mom in the room with me talking about how ive had trouble with this for years and that she knows it must be really bad because i have a really high pain tolerance and never say anything unless somethings really bad and just generally adding things i was too nervous would sound like malingering if i said them myself
the removal was excruciating but now that its been a few hours its amazing i can actually kinda walk and sit and lie down without pain as long as i'm careful
and whats great on top of that is that they told me to keep my referral to the surgeon next week because they said they would be able to give me surgery to try to prevent this from ever recurring which is really really exciting even if this was the worst i've been dealing with this for 7 years now. and i was so worried that it was an either or thing where i couldn't get permanent treatment unless i had an active flare up but when i have an active flare up i just want it gone asap. but i guess thats not the case!!!!
and it was really nice to see my mom she treated me and my gf to dinner afterwards. this was her first time seeing our apartment and im glad it was after we deepcleaned but also glad that she saw glimpses of what living with our roommate is like bc her consoling us about the situation was really appreciated too

AWS WAFv2 For Hotlink Protection: Future Of Content Security

How to stop hotlinking with Amazon CloudFront, WAF, and referer checking.
AWS WAF Classic will be retired in September 2025. This update describes how to utilise the latest AWS WAF (WAFv2) to avoid hotlinking. Screenshots have been updated to reflect AWS WAF Management Console changes.
Hotlinking, also known as inline linking, is a kind of content leeching in which an unauthorised third-party website embeds links to resources referenced in a major website's HTML. Your website may be invoiced for third-party websites' content as they don't pay for hosting. Slow loading times, lost money, and legal issues may result.
Hotlinking may now be stopped using AWS WAF. AWS WAF, a web application firewall, integrates with Amazon CloudFront, a CDN, to protect your web apps from typical online vulnerabilities that can reduce application availability, security, and resource use.
Solution overview
There are several techniques to handle hotlinking. The Apache module mod_rewrite may verify the Referer header on your web server. You may then redirect the visitor to your site's home page or display a 403 Forbidden message.
If you utilise a CDN like CloudFront to speed up website delivery, web server Referer header validation is less useful. The CDN must validate additional requests for that content because they are unlikely to reach the origin web server, even if your web server verifies the headers (in this example, the referer). The CDN caches your stuff at the edge of its servers.

Figure 1 shows the procedure:
A user client (1) requests from CloudFront edge point (2).
Edge locations try to return a cached file. This request is a cache hit if the cache replies.
The origin (3), which may be an Amazon S3 bucket, receives a request for a new copy of the object if there is a cache miss and the content is incorrect or not in the edge.
Cache hits prevent the origin from applying validation logic to the user's request since the edge server may fill the request without contacting the origin.
Two methods for solution implementation
This document provides two AWS WAF configurations to prevent hotlinking:
Transferring protected static assets (images or stylistic elements) to static.example.com ensures that you just need to check the Referer header.
Static files are in a directory on the same domain. This approach includes extending this example to check for an empty Referer header.
Your website structure and security needs will determine your strategy. The first approach lets you set up a Referer header check to guarantee that photo requests come from an allowlisted sub-domain, while the second way checks for an empty Referer header. The first technique prevents unaffiliated third-party sites from embedding image links, whereas the second allows users to share direct connections.
Terms
Key phrases from this post:
AWS WAFs use web ACLs tied to CloudFront distributions.
Each web ACL has one or more match criteria and rules.
Match conditions examine request headers or URIs for particular criteria using one or more filters.
The names of HTTP headers are not case-sensitive. Referer references the same HTTP header. However, HTTP headers are case-sensitive.
Requirements
A CloudFront distribution is needed to configure an AWS WAF web ACL. Configuring a CloudFront distribution with an S3 bucket origin is covered in Configure distributions.
Approach 1: Subdomain separation
This sample AWS WAF rule set comprises one rule, match condition, and filter. The match condition checks the Referer header for a given value. Traffic is allowed if the request meets rule conditions. If not, AWS WAF blocks traffic.
Due to the static files' subdomain (static.example.com) being accessible exclusively from example.com, you will restrict hotlinking for any file without a referral.
Approach 2: Domain-wide content with path filtering
The second technique filters by URL path and allows blank Referer headers. Create an AWS WAF web ACL with numerous rules and extra match criteria, which are filters. Instead than validating the Referer header once, the match condition validates it twice. First, check the request header. The URL-style Referer header is checked in the second validation.
Some people may prefer to share the photo URL directly. Accessing the picture directly in the browser can help avoid a negative user experience. This solution is better than the previous, which needed sub-domain picture requests.
You must also check the request route (/wp-content) for AWS WAF to protect multiple folders under a domain name.
In conclusion
AWS WAF, a web application firewall, monitors and manages HTTP(S) traffic to your protected web applications. Using the AWS WAF custom rule builder, you protected your website's Amazon S3 bucket content from hotlinking.
