„My style of writing—whether for my recent publications or my artwork—is directly informed and inspired by the notion of schizoanalysis. Schizophrenia, multiple personality disorder, and bipolar disorder are different clinical designations of structures of thought that at this point are inherent to the social and epistemological conditions we’re in, which conspiracy is inherently linked to and carries the stigmas of. I don’t like to present things too directly. I err in the direction of ambiguity in a schizo way of processing. As opposed to the idea of what a single subject means, what a subject’s voice represents, and how that voice expresses itself as indicative or elucidating of the conditions that we’re in, I like the alternative idea of a schizophrenic voice: one that can’t reside with any stability in the first person, third person, and so on, and that doesn’t even permit a predictable relationship between subject and verb. You’re jumping between persons, switching characters and exploding history into a play place. Allowing myself space for that mode of writing and thinking to happen is a more honest and dynamic reflection of how I’m processing the world.“

Look how the orna- mentation is cast about, before and behind: flourishes, fringes, fluted and frilled, overlapping end to end, suggesting trees, towns, houses, with roofs, clapboards, shingles, and gables. Would I were there looking in those gable windows beyond those towns and squares! Of its many styles some others suggest lichens and mosses. Yet inside these is where life is. Words cannot properly describe that which is beyond. That which is under. Yet that which is not visible, that which is squashed under the architecture, flattened under this bark of this tree, that which is rejected, hinted at, or held out considerably: what inter- ests me and keeps me interested in life. It never ends until Im dead. I like it once or twice removed. I like nothing on, or maybe I like freedom. I like that house down there with its fur gables and those pictur- esque, round piles beyond, over and upwards.

Emily Sundblad, born in 1977 in Dalsjöfors, Sweden, currently resides and creates in New York. She received her BFA from Parsons the New School for Design in New York in 2003, before attending the Whitney Museum's Independent Study Program, which she completed in the spring of 2006. She also works as an artist, performer, curator, and co-founder of Reena Spaulings Fine Art. In her bodies of work, Sundblad weaves together references to advertisements, souvenirs, floral arrangements, and songs. Recent exhibitions of her work have been showcased at prestigious venues such as Galerie Neu in Berlin and House of Gaga in Mexico City.
Description of Sundblad's Work:
Sundblad's creations take viewers into a world where reality and imagination collide, causing an otherworldly feeling. Her compositions defy traditional spatial logic, having viewers explore dreamlike landscapes. One of the most striking aspects of her work is the use of florals, which give her pieces vibrancy and life. Additionally, Sundblad's manipulation of color combinations further enhances the atmosphere of her art, drawing the viewer's attention.
What Interests Me:
Personally, I'm fascinated by Sundblad's ability to create visual narratives that are different from conventional art. Her work challenges viewers to reconsider their perceptions of space and reality, offering a glimpse into an alternate universe. Furthermore, the use of everyday references like advertisements and souvenirs adds layers of complexity to her pieces, prompting reflection on themes such as nostalgia and childhood
