This drawing comes from an interaction on Twitter.
This is from the first scene of the book Mattimeo, from the Redwall series (I've deleted some parts of the text. It was too much for the composition).
Anyway! It's been fun to draw!

Between Redwall and Outcast of Redwall, Sunflash is kind of the first Badger Lord of his kind, and I can't believe I either forgot or missed how genuinely cool he is.
Like first off he's basically the Mossflower version of a superhero. He's a wandering do-gooder who shows up in times of need to rescue people in trouble before moving on without asking for a reward, to the point where songs are sung about him and he reaches legend status by probably his late teens. And yet he's so different from the handful of Badger Lords we've seen so far, which at this point are Boar, Rawnblade, Urthstripe, and Urthwyte. (Yes I know Orlando eventually goes to Salamandastron after the events of Mattimeo but I don't count him because we mostly just see him as a dad.) Every one of them, except maybe Urthwyte, basically lives to fight vermin. Urthstripe shows distaste at the thought of parlaying with them. Rawnblade literally names his sword after how much he uses it to kill vermin.
Sunflash? Rescues Bruff and Tirry's family from foxes, but recognizes that the foxes are just bullies and scares them off without hurting them. Smerc and the eel literally try to drown him in a swamp, and he still shows concern for them when Skarlath strands them in a tree. The only ones he shows no mercy to are Warpclaw, a slaver who was trying to kill a baby at the time, and Swartt and his horde, that being a deeply personal conflict with a genuinely dangerous warlord who prides himself on being cruel. And if I recall correctly, once Swartt's dead and the horde is dealt with, that's basically it for Sunflash's fighting days. He rules Salamandastron as a farmer and poet, not a warrior.
I just think he's really cool and stands out among the rest of the stab-happy Badger Lords. I know he's not the only one who takes up a peaceful life--hello, Russano!--but he definitely set the standard for them and he's still one of my favorite badgers.

Which Redwall Villains could've won their fights, Part 1
Does anybody else feel a little proud when one of the Redwall villains puts up a good fight in the Climax? Considering how often they just end up getting killed accidentally by falling into a hole or being killed by something getting dropped on them, it's nice seeing them do a decent job. So I'm gonna see which ones had an actual chance of winning.
In 1 on 1 duels, this is pretty straight forward, but for fights where they flee due to numbers, I'll go off of a win/loss ratio depending on how many they could beat individually, as if they had managed to split them up. No tricks, just their regular weapons.
The first one that comes to mind is, of course, Cluny the Scourge. Perhaps one of the only fights in the Series where the Combatants were well-matched. Of course, though Matthias was buffed by Martin's spirit, he still wasn't quite up to snuff. If it hadn't been for his quick thinking, Cluny probably would've become ruler of Mossflower. At least until the Long Patrol showed up. That's a point to the vermin.
I wonder who the Badger Lord/Lady was at the time? Mara, perhaps? I doubt she would still be around.
Tsarmina severely injured Martin, but she still fled like a coward and drowned. Even if she didn't flee, Martin would've won anyway though he might've died in the process. Point to the Redwallers due to Martin's Chad energy overpowering her mind.
Honestly, Slagar didn't have any options other than running when the Gang started chasing him. But he still died like a chump. Got bitten by Asmodeus Poisonteeth and survived, but died because he forgot fall damage was a thing. Even if he could fight any of them one-on-one, he'd lose 3/5 of those fights. Because Cheek is a kid, and if Slagar is good at anything, it's beating those up. Jabez Stump is just kind of a guy. Slagar was always more of a schemer than a fighter. Point to the Redwallers, due to being completely outclassed by Matthias the Warrior, Orlando the Axe, and Basil Stag Hare.
Gabool the Wild was gonna die, no matter what happened here. Much like Slagar, he also had no other choice but to run. Also alike to Slagar, he also fell into a hole, but this time he died because he got killed by the Scorpion lurking in that pit. That was the first time a Villain accidentally died by their own hand. He still gets a better score in the win/loss ratio because I think he has a better chance of taking on any member of the Group individually. About 2/3, since Mariel, Dandin, and Durry are still inexperienced. Joseph, much like Jabez, is just a guy. Rawnblade and Tarquin, though? Tarquin might have invested in bard stuff, but he's still Long Patrol. He could probably kill him. That's gonna be a point to the Vermin.
Total Vermin Points: 2
Total Redwaller Points: 2
Point Ratio: 1 to 1.
See ya in Part 2.

Found a post of your’s about Redwall thanks to Mole Interest and wanted to let you know that your badger desires were granted in later books :D
Female Badger Ladies of Salamandastron include the magnificent Lady Malesme and Cregga Rose Eyes (the latter of whom was in a perpetual state of bloodwrath)
The Brock equivalent to the Badgermum is the Tabura who sought peace, knowledge, snd the care and education of young beasts he encountered (like Salixa and the dibbuns of Redwall). A few other brocks are defined by their positions as father figures, notably Orlando the Axe and Urthstripe the Strong, though they were warriors unlike the Tabura.
Ohhhh cool!!! Gosh I really gotta read Salamandastron (and every other Redwall book I haven't yet), I love the Badgers a lot.

Is it just me, or is Orlando the Axe both aromantic and gay? Like I know he has a dead wife but for some reason he gives of those vibes to me.
Actually you know I could accept aromantic and bisexual. I can’t decide. Thoughts?

A Zootopian in Redwall Abbey
Watercolor pencil and ink sketches of a plot bunny of mine that I'll likely never get around to writing.
Summary: ZPD is investigating a possible copycat crime when Nick and Judy discover that it's not exactly the copy-paste case they thought it would be. Nick soon finds himself in a completely unfamiliar time and place, where he's confronted by several mammals who have no love for foxes. Meanwhile, the suspect, a capybara named Roddy Carpincho, is engaging in some very illegal experiments involving night howlers. And he's targeting Redwall's predator species. Nick must convince the Redwallers he's on their side and stop the attacks. All the while trying to find a way home.
Takes place during the winter following the Autumn of the Warriors' Return. In my head canon, Basil is half mountain hare, so some of his fur turns white in the winter.

Throughout the books featuring him Matthias will often try to go off and do something dangerous by himself, but his friends (especially Log-a-Log) won’t let him.
Martin sidesteps this problem entirely by simply not telling his friends when he’s off to do something that will probably kill him.

A map of the lands of the Redwall novel series.  I created this in collaboration with Stoneflask Studios and it will be available for purchase at https://www.etsy.com/shop/TheGeekFind . The characters are of course (clockwise) Matthias, Orlando the Axe, Slagar the Cruel, and Cluny. It was a lot of fun to paint such lovable characters - and the villains - and put my own spin of anthropomorphisation on them.

It is time, once again, to venture back into the world of Redwall and to run alongside Orlando the Axe as we navigate the forests of Mossflower, hoping to find the young’uns. Slagar won’t know what’ll hit him.
