The Doppler effect is a mysterious wavelength-shifting phenomenon which seems to primarily affect sirens, which is why the 🚨 emoji is red.
Doppler Effect [Explained]
Transcript
[Miss Lenhart is pointing with a stick to a whiteboard with various scientific drawings and words, including but not only a graph.] Miss Lenhart: The more distant a galaxy is, the redder its light. Miss Lenhart: Why? Well, that's an interesting question.
[Zoom in on Miss Lenhart.] Miss Lenhart: Ever notice how, when a siren is approaching, it sounds like Bweeeeeeeeee...
[Zoom in on Miss Lenhart with her arms raised.] Miss Lenhart: ...but then it zooms past you and goes Nyeeeeooooowww? Miss Lenhart: And sometimes they hit a button that makes it go Pyeew! Pyeew! really loud?
[Miss Lenhart with her finger raised is standing in front of the whiteboard and holding the stick down.] Miss Lenhart: And in Europe they go Ooooeeeeooooeeee... Off-panel voice: So why are galaxies red? Miss Lenhart: Oh, no idea. Miss Lenhart: Anyway, another siren I like is...

#my fanfiction recommendation column
redshift by museaway
james t. kirk / s'chn t'gai spock
It wasn't on my agenda anytime soon, because I still have a few drafts that I can't finish, but it was my bedtime fic yesterday, and it was very distinctive in a good way. Probably, it's the best AOS interpretation of S1EP29 "The City on the Edge of Forever", and I really appreciate when TOS episodes play out well in AOS surroundings.
Several acts unfold over four chapters, telling different stories of emotional loss, leading us through corridors with semi-dimmed lights, and keeping us in an almost Vulcan emotional restraint. And although it tells us about familiar things, somehow it manages to play it off so unusually, balancing between the overt emotionality of AOS and the undertones and suppression of the original series.
As always, a few (almost non-spoiler) quotes from this beautiful, melancholic story:
Jim laughs and heaves in a breath. His eyes go awash with tears. His shoulders shake, and someone in the room is sobbing. The sound is alien. Spock places a hand on his arm until he comes back to himself. "I'm not going to be good company tonight," Jim says, covering his face. "I would not be anywhere else."
"Well..." Jim thinks for a moment, and a ragged, terrible landscape stretches before him beneath a brilliant sky. "Sometimes tragedy can be beautiful."
When he is again aware of someone else in the room, it's dark, and he's curled against another body. He recognizes the scent, the softness of his robes, the steady breathing. "Spock?" he whispers. "Yes?" Spock says quietly. "Are you really here?"
They're kissing on the bed and they're kissing in their minds. Jim can't separate the two, doesn't care which hand is a phantom pressure on his waist and which is actually curved around his neck. The gray surrounding space begins to crackle and shift as swirls of light beat up through the murk. Slowly, slowly, colors bleed into the landscape: midnight blue of an Iowa sky at twilight, green and brown of sun-baked grass, the golden yellow of cornstalks.

I can't be the only one that thinks it's really cool how the deep ocean and deep outer space, total opposites (to those on earth) are also total opposites in that red light cannot penetrate the deepest depths of the ocean, but the only light from the farthest away galaxies we can see (so far) is so far away that it's only light so redshifted that it's in the infrared. something something red light fuels our discoveries of one and cannot be perceived in the other
