There are many hornbill species in Southern Africa, but one of my favourite is the Southern Red-billed, not to be confused with the giant red and black ground variant. I am instantly drawn to this Red-billed Hornbill’s eye, piercing and bright, there is absolutely no hiding from its disapproving look! Then my attention moves to that incredible bill, and I wonder, “What on earth is its purpose?” It is in fact so large that the hornbill's first two neck vertebrae are fused together to support its large bill.

I have learned that different bird’s bills or beaks are specifically designed for the purpose of feeding on its main dietary items, examples are to tear off flesh, probe for termites and insects under bark, crack seeds, reach deep down a flower to feed on nectar, to pluck and eat fruit etc.

It seems that none of these entirely explain the purpose of a horn-bill’s beak, but actually, let’s consider their diet, they are omnivorous, catching and eating insects, plucking fruit, opening seeds and even hunting small rodents, this surely requires a versatile beak. And then, on top of that, what a handy tool for preening, settling an argument, and building and sealing nests. In other words, not just a pretty ornament but also a trowel, a spear, a digging implement and a comb. A versatile multi-tool.

Tanzanian Red-billed Hornbill (Color). These are usually social birds, although I only saw this one. They have interesting nesting behavior. When the female is ready to incubate the eggs she and the male seal her into the nest with the eggs by making a wall of mud, food remains and droppings, leaving only a small hole for the male to pass food to her, and eventually the chicks.
