Red Winged Fairywren, in non-breeding male colouration. Their colours depend on the season and social role; breeding males have classic blue fairywren colouration, and many of them shed the colourful feathers over the cooler part of the year.

Some of my favourites from Western Australia:
Red Winged Fairywren (Sky Edwards 2022)
Splendid Fairywren (Sky Edwards 2023)
lahore pigeons are some of the most visually appealing birds out there. like in terms of visual design. very minimalist, good contrast.

Request: I'd like to see Blue Link in your style more :) no pressure ofc
I know you only said Blue Link, but I don't really draw the other colours (negating Vio) all that much, so I decided to just draw them all in fun outfits as fairywrens!

Malurus argentum - a drawing of Sova as an elizabethian fairy for hollownull!!!
ID and analysis are under the cut<3 (main image has an image description!)
[ID: A digital drawing of Sova Amalie from Vast Error. She is in a Hollownull costume of an Elizabethian fairy. She is kneeling on light brown grass, and is holding one arm up to support her lusus, Cooperi, a peach and white owl. Her wings are both moth- and butterfly-like, and are mainly brown with hints of pink, red, and light blue. The piece is labelled ""Malurus argentum" by mothistopheies". Sova's outfit is a pink and cream long sleeved shirt and skirt, with a light blue corset. She is wearing a falconry glove, also blue, with a quarter note rest embroidered on it. She is holding a heart locket. The background is soft pinks. End ID.]
detail notes (also seen in the image above):
-the name Malurus argentum is a play on latin names: Malurus comes from the Malurus genus of birds known as fairywrens (bird motif + fairy theme), and argentum is latin for silver
-hairpiece is from Sova's play, Upon the Twelfth Hour
-wings have colors from LODAL (Land of Daze and Lattice), pureself design, and blood color
-the hair draped around her face has the heart motif
-small Cooperi rests on a modified falconry glove, which is embroidered with a quarter note rest
-her corset has repetitive 3 pronged embroidery, mimicking the alchemy symbol for Silver
-the locket is from [S] Ellsee: Enter and the chain is draped in a heart shape
-the lower wing is 3 pronged, also mimicking the silver alchemical symbol. the wings also have modified arrows on them, for the same reason.
-her skirt is based on butterfly wing scales, made of repetitive rectangles overlapping each other
-her loose ponytail is held in place by a smaller butterfly

TADC AU
Wing AU
Caine don’t know how humans work so when the players get stuck in the digital circuit, they have their avatar + they have wings. The wigs are functional and can work like normal bird wings.
Bird breeds I feel like the cast would be:
Jax
Purplish Jay bird, because of the purple lol. (Or a red backed fairywren)
Ragatha
Budgies (Parrot) they are very caring and loving pets.
Zoobel
Sun Conures (parrot) because of the color.
Gangel
Finch, they are very small and quiet birds but they can also make pretty sounds.
Kinger
Shoebill…..look at it, very weird and a bit creepy. (Or maybe he could be a owl)
Pomni
House Wren, also a small and quiet bird. (Or maybe she could be a kiwi bird)
Since Pomni is new, should dosnt have the best ability to fly, and would get very scared. Jax is probably the one who flies the most, Ragatha like to hover and glide, Ganger just likes to perch or hover, along with hiding behind her wings. Zoobel likes to fly or perch. Kinger I feel would also fly, but he many uses his wings to hide behind or use them to point.
For angst potential; one of them could have have problems with flying? Maybe Pomni and Ganger since they’re the smallest bird species so they can’t fly well. OR one or two of the character’s wings is misformed or damaged.

So!! I’ve been recently drawing designs for Desert Duo in Third Life, which got me really thinking about Grian’s wings, as well as my various design headcanons for the Life series.
I have a lot of ideas about them both, mainly because of how much I write stories and adore really any kind of lore. They’ve actually come up in a recent post, in this section:
“If the Watchers were gods, they should have been divine. Instead, they play tricks. In a past long gone, they make Grian’s wings striped browns, like that of the burrowing owl. They tease him with the knowledge of the birds and the desert, they tie the string of fate between him and Scar. They tease him again, wings black as the night, an omen of death. He always manages to kill those he cares for. Over and over again, he apologizes.”
So!! What does that all mean for character designs?
In short: I imagine that characters in the Life series change appearances over both seasons and respawns. However, they’re for two different reasons.
Appearance changes between seasons:
Basically, my headcanon is that after becoming mortal again (joining the Life series), Grian’s physical form could be changed minorly by the Watchers. This applies to other players as well, and is the reason their appearances change over seasons. Usually, appearance changes by the Watchers are only ever minor, and meant to foreshadow the future of the player.
The Watchers love a good show. What better way to screw with the players (especially Grian) than to hold their futures right in front of them?
Appearance changes upon respawn:
The way the worlds are built over the series contribute to the appearance of the players. This is through the amount of lives left.
The smallest degree of it is an eye color change and the amount of hearts on a life tracker going down (ex: Grian and Etho), but to stronger degrees, losing a life can mean things such as:
Desaturation of color from the skin to the point the player can look either sick or like their skin is greyscale (ex: 3L!Scar and 3L!Ren)— Oftentimes, desaturation also makes the color of the eyes of the player more vibrant
Furthering of physical alterations (LiL!Scott)— These can include various different end results. In LiL!Scott’s case, the lower his time left is, the more fish-like he appears.
Various other effects
It was actually pretty fun to come up with some lore for the skin changes and MC mechanics,, if/when I make more designs maybe I’ll add on more!!
Grian’s wings:
Finally!! The point of this post!! Okay, so here’s the ideas I have for how Grian’s wings change every season, and what they mean:
Third Life: Burrowing owl — I love the idea of foreshadowing and making things “fated”. So hear me out here— Grian’s first home, the one he later abandons, is inside of a mountain. It could be considered a burrow of sorts! But the reason that Grian’s wings are based on burrowing owls isn’t just for that, it’s for where he ends up staying. Burrowing owls are birds that live in the desert, the exact place where Grian ends up living for the remainder of Third Life. By having his wings based on burrowing owls, it’s almost as if it was already predicted he’d belong to the sands eventually, he just didn’t know until he was there.
Last Life: Red-tailed Hawk — I knew I wanted his wings to be of a bird of prey’s for Last Life, but I actually had a hard time deciding at first. Red-tailed hawks are ambush predators, striking from up high on unsuspecting prey. In Last Life, Grian was part of plenty of ambushes and attacks with Joel— so I think this one fits a more chaotic red life Grian.
Double Life: Red-backed Fairywren — Ah yes. Secret soulmates. Red-backed fairywrens are known for their infidelity to their pair bond. They present red petals to the bird they intend to cheat with, and never do this to the one they are already bonded with. I wonder!! Wonder why that fits for DL!Grian!!
Limited Life: Raven/crow — Throughout the Life series, Grian has gotten those he cared about killed. Both ravens and crows are symbolic of death, which is why these wings would become his in Limited Life. It also fits the Bad Boy aesthetic! I couldn’t decide on which would be better, but I throw “crow” in here alongside the raven wings because of one line from The Garden (oh wow, the Crane Wives, in my Life series post? It’s more likely than you think)— “The crows in the garden are laughing at my expense / Drowning out all the lies that I might have told instead”
That’s pretty much all I have as of right now when talking about Grian’s design and my various headcanons :)

The Splendid Fairywren is the most common in my area:
My other local species don't have such fun names, but are very pretty.
Red Winged and Purple Backed Fairywrens are very similar, and best distinguished by location. I believe these are Red Winged:
I haven't got very close yet, but the White Winged Fairywren may be a strong second place to the Splendid in rankings for the Bluest Bird:
hi. did you know australia has a fairywren species called the superb fairywren
and another species called the splendid fairywren
...and one called the lovely fairywren

hi hello i have normal opinions on animals especially birds. my favourite animal overall is bear, it's always bear, man i fucking love bears. but hell yeah fucking BIRDS TIME. IT'S BIRDS TIME
I am Australian so of course I do have to appreciate the kookaburra:
(a kookaburra sitting on a branch. it is a fluffy kingfisher, with a pale, squat body and dark brown wings. there is a stripe of brown along its face, around its eyes and up its forehead, and some pale teal feathers on a portion of its wing.)
yes they DO sound like monkeys and yes they ARE carnivores and yes they are SO fluffy. best is when they all sing at once in chorus. kookookookooKAKAKAKAKAKAKAA—
THEN THERE'S THESE GUYS:
(two pictures of red tailed black cockatoos. they are medium-sized birds with mostly black bodies. their bodies, faces and wings are speckled with yellow, and the underside of their tailfeathers have stripes of bright, warm orange.)
THEY ARE SO PRETTY! I am not immune to a charismatic bird. Look at them go!!!
ok now my favourite little scrub-dwellers, get a load of these guys:
(two superb fairywrens sitting on a branch. they have small, round bodies, short, straight beaks, and long tailfeathers that point up. one is a mature male. its body is partially pale grey, but from the breast up, it is mostly very dark blue, with very pale patches of blue under its eyes, on its forehead, and on the back of its neck. the other bird is not a mature male, and is mostly the same pale grey, except for a orangey-brown beak and face.)
THEY ARE SO SMALL. THEY ARE SMALLER THAN MY FIST, AND I HAVE SMALLISH HANDS. they are passerine birds which means they are in the same order as MAGGIES!!!
(an australian magpie standing in short grass. it is a mid-large bird, which a mostly black body. there are patches of white on the back of its neck and the underside of its tailfeathers. its beak is pale and very sharp.)
I LOVE AUSTRALIAN MAGPIES!!! They are not corvids like European magpies. They also have a much prettier song (in my not-at-all-biased opinion):
youtube
LISTEN TO HOW PRETTY THAT IS. WTF.
they are also very clever!!! But they do have an unfortunate tendency to swoop if they feel their nests are threatened so you will often see people riding around on bikes wearing zip ties on their helmets. This is not the fault of the birds; they are doing what evolution has decided they should; I still love them
honourable mention to LYREBIRDS who are cool mostly because of all the SOUNDS they make, get a load of this:
youtube
and then of course the blue-footed booby.
(two blue-footed boobies walking. they have pale bodies and dark brown wings. dark feathers are interspersed with lighter ones up their necks and heads. they have dark grey breaks and yellow eyes, and bright turquoise webbed feet. in this photo, both of them have their right foot lifted up, making them look almost like dancers.)
it is impossible to find a serious-looking photo of a blue-footed booby and i respect them greatly for that.
My friend just made me feel weird for asking so now i gotta know.
If you do have a favorite bird please please tell me in the tags, i want to see some Birds!!
#animals#birds#I am always happy to talk birds#If anyone has additions pls tag me/send to me bc i would love to hear bird thoughts#i want to know more birds#Youtube
