Taking a shift in the surveilance room was hell for Red-Stripe.
Not because of the late nights–it was crepuscular, why would that bother it? Not because it was mostly boring in a ship like the Guileless. There was rarely any trouble here. And the worst it ever got to was an entertaining spat. No. It was because of the humans.
More specifically.
The play-hunting.
Red-Stripe could see them on the projections sometimes. It usually occured once a day, if it was lucky, it was less.
One of the humans slowly crept up on another human–bent low and Red-Stripe felt its rapid heartbeat rise further.
The humans play-hunting were tiny. Young. But chicks. Yet, they were already starting to learn how to capture prey.
They were terrifying.
The tiny creeping human leapt at the other from behind, blinding it with its meaty talons.
Red-Stripe shivered, doing its best to keep its eyes on one of the other projections.
I feel like any aliens that were prey at some point in evolution would have an odd fear of humans. Mostly cause they look like predators, act a bit like predators, and ARE predators. One perfect example is when we're focused on something like a mosquito that's been bugging us for a long time and we are just done.
Alien: "What. What..?"
Human: *HUNTING down a mosquito it saw*
Alien: ".... yeah I am really uncomfortable...."
Human: *quiet footsteps, pupils dialated, intense focus,*
Alien: *WAR FLASHBACKS*
Human: "Found you." *absolutely desimates the mosquito, squashing it into a million pieces as it's guts and various body parts liquidize into blood of the bloodthirsty, now stained on the palm of the human. A living being now reduced to a useless corpse as the human wipes the remains on their pants*
Alien: "I feel like I've just gained trauma."

Sunni Toka
(She typically wears a poncho over her outfit when not swimming)
other characters you need to know for her story: Zac (best friend)
Birth Year: 37 BBY
Age at beginning: 15
Species: Notolan
Gender: Female, She/her
Height: 5’3”
Occupation: Padwan
Force Alignment: Light
—————————————————————————-
Personality: Sunni is very motherly and likes to come across as mature for her age. She hides her own inner struggles as not wanting to affect those around her as the Jedi drilled emotional suppression into her from a young age. She mimics her former master in many ways but a lot of her confidence is a front and she doesn’t yet fully know who she is.
Appearance: Sunni is a yellow skinned Notolan with small pinkish red stripes on her tentacles. Her outfit is a moore traditional Notalan attire with an outfit for swimming underneath her pants. Her body and tentacles are decorated with beads and bracelets and sense she doesn’t have hair her padwan braid her’s is made of beads.
Weapons: I know in canon we see lightsabers be used underwater but that’s lame so I’m keeping the thing from legends. She has a double bladed saber with a simple silver hilt. It is actually two separate sabers connected to gether at the hilt and can be split apart. One saber is blue and the other is green. They also are made from special kyber crystals that can be ignited under water. When ignighted they look like kid fisto’s saber from the old 2D clone wars. (Shown in drawing)
—————————————————————————-
Backstory: Sunni was taken by the order as a baby and has no memory of her parents. She doesn’t care too much about it but would like to find them again some day. She’s always Looked up master Kid Fisto another Notolan Jedi and wanted to be trained by him but he had a padwan when she was ready to be trained. Instead she was trained by master (insert name) Who fell ill and passed away. They had been very close and he was like a father to her. She was then pared up with Zac due to need of capable commanders in the war despite neither of them having a master. She’s still very effected by her master’s death though she pretends not to be and as a child thrown into war she is very emotionally vulnerable.

For the title game: project 47 👀
@zeawesomebirdie come on down! You're the next contestant for the WIP game! [Legally safe knockoff version of music from a certain game show plays]
So I generally have a hard time naming things, so "Project 47" is pretty much a codename for a scif/fantasy hybrid original universe that spun off from a Final Fantasy/LoZ crossover. I say scifi/fantasy hybrid because while it's a near-future setting with an intersystem capable spacecraft, magic exists and in fact the spacecraft (technically an aerospace ship) runs on magitek (pretty much it's a fantasy themed airship, running off fantasy tech, with conventional rockets attached so it can reach orbit.)
I've talked about this project a bit before: here and here. So this time I'm going to ramble some about one of the major characters, Miras. Miras is an Avestren (a bird alien), the name was chosen back with "Project 47" was a FF/LoZ crossover and she was originally a Rito. Now this was back in the Wind Waker days and I had already decided to retcon the Rito as full birbs but kept the arms turning into wings thing. (Fun fact, Teba's appearance is actually pretty close to how I was picturing female Rito: raptor beaks, white feathers, dark wingtips. Cause well, *points at Medli*)
Miras started development as a fresh soldier having just graduated from an elite military academy (at some point I used the recurring "Red Wings" name from the Final Fantasy franchise) on her first assignment. Find the wielder of a legendary magic weapon who would save the world.
Eventually, I purged the LoZ elements from the project so it was purely Final Fantasy. At this point, Miras was no longer a Rito, but an unnamed bird race that fit the typical six limbed (arms, legs, wings) anthro bird mold.
After deciding to cut out the obvious Final Fantasy material (races, lore, etc.) and turning Project 47 into its own thing, Miras changed. She is now a Gunnery Sergeant in the Takara Alliance Defense Forces, Husark Corps, she's in 30-40's, has a mate and several children.
Normally Avestrens are flightless, their wings evolved/devolved back into arms. The fossil record for their people is broken so when and how this happened is unclear, but if you ask the clergy of a religious group known as the Children of Korus they'll say that Korus punished them by taking their wings for some unspecified sin. Miras however is a member of the Husark Corps, and elite military unit whose members have undergone surgery to install cybernetic devices.
These devices are mostly internal, however there are a series of semi-retractable "spikes" on the spine. These "spikes" provide a mind-to-machine interface with a flightpack that contains a fantasy based thrust engine and swarms of nanites. The nanites coalesce and harden to form wings, which are used for gliding and flight control. They can also be used defensively or offensively while on the ground. Basically it's my way of having flying bird people with arms and avoiding the logistical problems of six limbs and wings in the way.
Some basic information first, Miras is 2.05 m tall, weighs 47.6 kg, has light green eyes, and like typical female Avestrens has grey and white plumage (grey on back, white on underside). Avestrens have unique color stripes around their eyes and down the sides of their neck, and hers are dark red. In addition every Avestren has unique banding marks. Miras has a necklace pattern, bare chest, and broken stripes on her belly.
Avestren names are complicated, with a very long formal name that combines the individual's first name and family name. Avestrens do not marry in the human sense, so an individual would chose the family name of one of their parents (traditionally chosen along gender lines). Miras is her common name, "Mir" derived from her first name and "as" from her father's family name.
Miras mother is a member of the Children of Korus' clergy, and her father is a sapientologist (what Star Trek would call a xenoanthropologist, in universe an anthropologist would study specifically human cultures). As is tradition with members of the Children of Korus' clergy, Miras was trained to follow in her mother's footsteps. However, when Miras came of age (around 15) and gained her adult plumage a dark secret was revealed. She had a necklace pattern, and her siblings and parents did not. The only way to have that pattern is if one of your parents has it.
Long story short, the tesal (an Avestren word for adult male) Miras thought was her father was in fact not her biological father. This scandal became a crisis of faith for her and she instead decided to follow in the footsteps of tesal who raised her. Thus she chose his family name.
Unfortunately for her, fate had other plans. After the end of her freshman year in college she and her human BFF went to a government building to pick up some passports. (The human BFF was going on a overseas family trip over the break.) While they were exiting the building, a man bumped into Miras and she was about to tell him off. The man looked at her like she was a monster and that threw her off, he half-ass apologized and walked off. Miras and her friend went back to the car and when they got there the friend realized she left her cellphone at the security checkpoint.
As she makes her way back, the building explodes...
The friend dies, the man from before turns out to be a human supremacist and was gunning down survivors of the explosion, Miras is forced to fight and kill him, is wounded in the process and barely survives.
This incident triggers a global war (the human supremacist group had received assistance from another nation), Miras eventually joins the military. (But not before getting together with her mate and having her first brood, for reasons that are similar to Harth's reasoning in @unmaskedcardinal's Rito Chronicles in one scene, maybe in Age of Intolerance?). The war ends rather abruptly when an entire continent on another world freezes over in an instant, and a nation that had remained neutral in the war confronts the opposing airfleets with vastly superior technology and basically demands they stop fighting, while also giving them scientific evidence that the gods are real and are in fact energy beings on another plane of existence, and bring up prophecies of a Second Celestial War.
Miras remains in the military, a cold war starts between the Takara Alliance and its enemies, proxy wars cause no one wants to break the treaty and piss off the Pazran Coalition. She eventfully has a second brood, joins the Husark Corps (her mother didn't like that very much, but they still have a good relationship), and by the time the story proper would have started, she's become a drill instructor and had gone back to school to finish getting a degree in sapientology (a Master's IIRC). It's then that an Admiral from the Takara Alliance Air Defense Force approaches her with an opportunity, put that degree to work on the Korus and join the ground survey team on the world with the frozen continent.
Whew... Okay that's enough for now, though I'll happily ramble more later. *wink*
Thanks for the ask!

oddmischiecatic-
a gender related to sweet yet creepy black cats, zoomies, the void (when cats seem to disappear) nomming ankles, mreowling and sitting on people at inconvenient times, "kneading" and biting as a stim, being audhd, an odd obsession with staring at corners, wanting to catch bugs and birbs, and hiding in boxes!

25. What is your favorite thing about your OC?
Oof, this is going to be a long one. You did ask for an info dump, here I go. Writing it down, I'm seeing a pattern with my main OCs :/
Ly'rill (The OG)
- Design wise, the markings that she has now. Something that pop into my brain that went, "What if her markings are like Ammy from Okami? Like, only the ones who have true faith in beings like her can see her markings."
- They're hot-headed despite her looking calm, let's just say it took practice to mask their anger and when they need to release that pent up anger, she'll go to her domain and burn shit. Sometimes, Cathrin is more than happy to be in her line of sight (these two are horny for each other and her logic brain goes out the window, "Angry tiny woman who can incinerate her into non-existence hot.")
Astrel (birb)
- Her feather slowly gaining its color (I wont elaborate too much because it's still tbd). Notice that before I drew her with dark hair/feathers and now she had red stripes, yeahhhh. She used to colorful feathers before trauma happened when she was very young
- She can easily change a topic about herself to something else, and she's a great liar if she wants to. But, she does have trouble lying to people who she cares and has a genuine heart.
Quinn (bread boi)
- He's a fairly new addition, so I don't have much info on him except he bakes and really, what more can I add than this.
Cathrin (dont judge me)
- Werepyre (werewolf + vampire hybrid) monster buff lady :D
Vyrll (main WoL)
These are ffxiv OC that I might elaborate more in the future idk
Azrel + Kena (Astrel's moms)
- Like Astrel, their feathers and actual harpy form. Typical love birds
- They really love their daughter, that if anything happens to her, they will kill anyone who stands in their way or are involved in hurting their daughter.
- Was taken by the Garleans and experimented on due to her unique heritage (half au'ra)
- Took years for her to escape, due to the chance the calamity event gave
- She had a family (a wife, and twins) that she tries to go back to, but due to her lost identity and having no gils, well shes stuck in Eorzea and doing odd jobs to save up, then fate comes with its bs.
Kriv Xeran (bona fide hrothgal)
- Vyrll's wife and known local blacksmith of their village
- Still in the work since shes new

For that Red Riding Hood P3 au.
Tiny Birb Monster Ryoji bringing Minato ‘gifts’ like a Kitty?
Gifts= Dead Animals
I got insanely happy when an ask for my AU came up, and I love that it was such a simple, kind of goofy request. This was fun to write, I hope you enjoy this addition as much as I do <3
Despite often walking on all fours and being a monster born from the night, Ryoji Mochizuki, as Minato's...companion had named himself, was a nightmarishly intellegent creature.
Upon first glance, he had seemed no smarter than perhaps a crow when Mitsuru had given him a few tests. Able to identify shapes, people, and maybe even himself in a mirror, but unable to speak or seemingly understand them beyond inflection or tone. However, after a particularly odd spat, Minato and his co-workers had learned that his new Shadow was not only smarter than a crow, but was scarily so. Showing that he could not only identify shapes, but write in shockingly neat handwriting.
With all of that said, whatever unnerving depths of intellegence Ryoji hid didn't keep him from behaving like a spoiled brat of a bird. Demanding pet, yowling and cawing when he wanted food, and demanding to be bathed despite Minato being almost certain that the same creature who was capable of opening doors and locked phones could do it himself. Or, in tonight's case of his stubborn game. Bringing home dead animals to be, what Minato could only assume to be, some form of gift.
"Ryoji. Where the FUCK, did you get a zebra in Japan?" Minato asked, gesturing to the dead, striped horse that the monster had dropped onto the porch the night, and now laid on the pavement baking in the sun. Yet, of course, the cat-sized Shadow on his shoulder did nothing but trill and press his head into Minato's cheek gently, cooing and fluttering his four wings in innocent joy. Obviously, he wasn't going to answer. So, with a heavy sigh, the blue-haired Shadow hunter admitted defeat on the conversation front. Simply decided to try and look the animal over instead.
Not that this had been the first dead 'gift' he'd found, Ryoji had brought him a wide collection of dead things in the two months that he'd claimed the midnight-haired male as his favorite person. But, this was the first one that was far too big to toss into the dumpster and forgotten about. So, the hunter was left to find some other method to get rid of the poor thing while he looked the corpse over for a cause of death.
Judging from the lack of a blood stain, the zebra hadn't been cut into. That, or it simply didn't have any blood left in it, but, it's course fur didn't seem to be hiding any thin cuts or puncture holes at the throat, so Ryoji being vampiric didn't seem to be the case. "So, like, are you going to eat this thing?" He asked after a finishing his half-hearted investigation of the scene, but the odd shadow only looked up at him in silence. Frozen in his attempt to get a ramune marble out of a discarded bottle to gawk up at Minato as if he'd just spat in his birthday cake. "I'll take that as a no." The hunter sighed, looking back at the corpse on the dormitory porch as he thought again.
He tried lifting the horse, but it would at least take two very determined people to do, and the blue-haired shadow hunter wasn't exactly in the mood to put that much work into it. Especially since burying it would require him to dig a hole as well.
So, he came to a different idea, and turned back to the cat-sized monster fighting the glass bottle. "'yoji, why don't you bring this thing inside? We'll eat it, or something." He told him, which got a trill as the creature dropped the ramune bottle and began extending himself and stretching himself out into a bigger size with a soundtrack of skin-crawling cracks, ripping, and bone-scraping noises that was enough to make Minato cringe a little bit. But, he wasn't about to shame the monster for the noises when he could just pick his catch up like it were little more than a bag of cat food and haul it inside.
Mitsuru would inevitably be pissed about the dead zebra, but that was an issue for later.

13 16 21 for the pokemon ask game!
o boy here we go
13. favorite antagonist team
This one is hard because I enjoy a lot of them for different reasons. Like I love that Team Rocket is just straight up the mob, they are definitely a legitimate Threat, but then like I also love Team Skull because they are TEAM SKULL.
But for a favorite...well, Team Aqua and Team Magma are tied. I enjoy the fact that they are both just so dumb??? They want to improve the world for Pokemon but they somehow never took an earth science course (even though Maxie ABSOLUTELY has) and thus don't know that expanding the land or the ocean has Serious Consequences for everyone. Like I enjoy that the ideas/goal aren't fundamentally evil, but they are so misguided that they fall to doing evil things to accomplish their goals. And they are just...so, so stupid, I love them.
BUT to avoid a tie, I'll say my fave is Team Magma, solely because, going by the ORAS redesigns, I love that these idiots wear sweaters in a volcano.
16. least favorite shiny pokemon
Honestly I have SO MANY. I love a lot of shinies but just as many are...so bad. But the reason why this one is hard isn't because of like, degree of ugliness of colors as much as it is that my least favorite shinies are the most disappointing ones. With that in mind, my least favorite shiny is Leafeon, because we could have had AUTUMN COLORED LEAFEON and instead we got Slightly Darker Leafeon.
I am gonna give a couple runner-ups. Kecleon, because Pokemon Mystery Dungeon had the Kecleon Brothers and I think the shiny should have been purple and green like the brother instead of slightly different yellow markings and blue stripe instead of red.
And my other runner-up, Dragonite, and this one IS because I dislike the colors because we go from lovely pink and gold to very questionable purple and green. And purple and green is a color combo I do enjoy together, but...not these shades.
21. favorite legendary/mythical pokemon
I am bullied, BULLIED I SAY. Now I AM going to cheat and list a legendary and mythical Pokemon because they are two separate categories.
So, legendary. This one is very hard because I love two legendary Pokemon very much, but I am going to go with Suicune. Aside from a whole lotta love for the Johto games fueling this choice, I also adore Suicune's design? The color palette is one I enjoy, I like the ribbons and the mane, I am heavily biased towards water types, and as a kid I definitely wanted to ride on it like a horse. It also plays an important role in the fourth Pokemon movie, which is one I remember very fondly.
The runner-up here, if anyone cares to know, is Articuno, the OG Kanto version. Love me an ice birb and that TAIL.
And Mythical is even harder because I have many emotions about many of them and I love so many. Manaphy especially has a place in my heart because of how desperately I wanted one and how IMPOSSIBLE it was for me until they were rereleased, I even tried the Pokemon Ranger thing and it didn't work lol.
But one of my two fave mythic Pokemon is Jirachi. I cant really explain why; is it the zero thoughts looking face? The eye on the stomach, because I love me some eyes where they don't belong? Or is it the wish-granting mechanic? Who knows, certainly not me.
Also I am calling this one a TIE because I ADORE Celebi. Teeny bug with the power of time, what will it do. Yes I know Celebi is Psychic/Grass but it is bug in my heart. I love the design and the colors, grass Pokemon being another weakness, but once again I also have built emotions based on other Pokemon media. The fourth Pokemon movie is Celebi-centric and amazing, ESPECIALLY THE HEARTBREAK OF THAT SCENE, but in Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Explorers of Time, Darkness, and Sky, she was also a very important character.
Thanks so much for the ask, this was a ton of fun!! :D Feel free to send more in if you like!

opinions on birbs?
whats ur favorite one? mine is crows and ravens such handsome bois i love them
okay i could go off on this FOREVER because i've been OBSESSED with birds since i was like. 4.
i've been collecting bird feathers since i was 4 or 5. i have around 2,000+ in my collection, and i've actually found peacock feathers in the wild! i have a few peacock feathers, a crap ton of blue jay feathers (they were super common where i used to live, one time i found like 50 in one day!) i also have a lot of beautiful red cardinal feathers, which is actually really good because cardinals shed their feathers extremely rarely! the first one i found, i found accidentally by slipping on a patch of ice and i saw it when i sat up adflasdfasd.
i just want everyone to like. also admire the beauty of pheasant feathers, turkey tail feathers, grouse feathers, and blue jay feathers like.
[Image ID: A picture of a blue jay perched on a tree stump, with its wings and tail feathers spread revealing beautiful blue feathers with vibrant white and black patterns. End ID.]
THE COLORATION OF THIS PLUMAGE IS LITERALLY BREATHTAKING!
AND LOOK AT OWLS AND GROUSE FEATHERS!
[Image ID: Two images of two feathers, an owl and a grouse feather. Both are a dusty orange-brown color with black stripes. End iD.]
like feathers with stripes can never be overstated as beautiful like just. look at them. the coloration, the patterns, the details!
[Image ID: Two identical goldfinch feathers- they are golden yellow down the middle with bright yellow stems, and with wavy black-and-white patterns along the edges. End ID.]
gold finch feathers are some of my favorites too because they look more brown in photos but they are SO GOLDEN AND THEY'RE BEAUTIFUL!
[Image ID: A picture of a cardinal feather, completely vibrant red, laying horizontally on the gravel. End ID.]
now cardinal feathers are tricky. because in general, a majority of their plumage isn't super bright vibrant red, it's more of a dusty red-brown, but their tail feathers, especially the males, are actually as vibrant red as they look! i have a few and they're just so so pretty
and ofc, the mother of all feathers is the peacock feather. they're iridescent, they're patterned, they're huge, and they're fucking gorgeous! peacocks are little bitches but they have every right to be because DAMN they're pretty!
[Image ID: Two pictures of a peacock tail with beautiful feathers. They have green frills along the outside and are brown with blue "eyes" and a green circle outline. End ID.]
now some feathers that i think are really underrated are eagle feathers! yes, they are kind of dull in color and their patterning is fairly basic for a striped feather, but they're MASSIVE and so in person they're still really fricking cool just because of how big and impressive they are. one time, i was at a stonehenge site and i found a few laying around and i was practically crying, they're so cool!
[Image ID: A picture of several large, pointy eagle feathers- dark brown with white stripes. End ID.]
so yeah it's safe to say i love birds. their anatomy is so cool, their power is so cool, and some fly like. thousands of miles just to migrate for different seasons! i'd say my favorite birds are also ravens and crows, just because they're so beautiful and cute and also very gender, but i also love pileated woodpeckers, blue jays, red-winged blackbirds, and rose finches!
[Image ID: A picture of a red-winged blackbird perched on a thin branch. It is entirely black except for a vibrant red patch with a golden yellow bottom on its wings. End ID.]
[Image ID: A picture of a rose finch perched on a thin green twig. It is small, plump, and pastel pink in color. End ID.]
[Image ID: A picture of a pileated woodpecker on the side of a tree. It is mainly black with white and black stripes on its neck and a vibrant red crest! End ID.]

I’m bored so I’m gonna rate the birds that are coming to my birdfeeder
Dark eyed junco
10/10 they are just little goth orbs that go where winter goes. Perfect floof to birb ratio.
House sparrow
10/10 cryptic coloration but, like, in a classy way. So nice. And the black bit reminds me of a tie so dapper gentleman.
Mourning dove
13/10 one of my favorite birds. Classic song that I’ve been mimicking since before I could walk. Extremely round when it sits down, so comfy looking, excellent cream color.
White breasted nuthatch
10/10 daring climber. Simple but striking coloration. One of my grandma’s favorites.
Northern Cardinal
12/10 another grandma favorite, just look at that color. Even the females that have more cryptic coloration look just so lovely. Such a pretty bird, and I tell them so often
Brown headed cowbird
-5/10 nest stealing habitat fragmentation opportunist bastard, moving on
House Finch
10/10 so nice, slimming stripes, tasteful splash of color, classic yet daring
Black capped chickadee
11/10 is it a birdfeeder without a chickadee? No I didn’t think so. Friendliest birb, will sometimes hang out on a nearby branch while I fill up the bird feeder and scatter seeds on the ground.
Blue jay
9/10 just so goddamn pretty. Just look at those colors, like a clear sky. Mild case of bastard but the looks mostly make up for it.
Red bellied woodpecker
15/10 keystone species making homes for smaller birbs, eats wood eating bugs (even the emerald ash borer), and is also a shy boi who needs protecting.
#bird#birds#birb#there's probably more but I'm tired#mourning dove#red bellied woodpecker#chickadee#blue jay#brown headed cowbird#dark eyed junco#house finch#northern cardinal#house sparrow#white breasted nuthatch

Deme Rates Villagers, Part 4: Birds
Disclaimer: Images are from the wiki, all good dogs, my ratings are mainly just there because “Deme gives her abstract thoughts on villagers” is hardly a catchy thing.
Let’s get to the birbs! Are there borbs? No, not really, Animal Crossing birbs have a pretty straightfoward and uniform shape, they are most likely not borbs.
Ace
Another villager time forgot! Without seeing a clear shot of his eyes (they’re not perma-closed), a big element of his design is sadly lost on me. Otherwise, he’s pretty cute. Nothing fancy, but cute.
2 (Hidden Eyes) /5
Admiral
Eyebrows. Angry. Eyebrows!
...What’s with his stomach not being the same color as the underside of his face, though? It makes them feel disconnected, which honestly loses some of the appeal for me. On the other hand, angry eyebrows for a grumpy bird.
Eyebrows... /10
Anchovy
To be honest, I don’t know what to make of Anchovy. On the one hand: I like his simple, bird-like color scheme. I like his square eyebrows... But his expression, his pupils so very, very tiny... Kinda weirds me out. Which, spoiler, is going to be a thing with the birds. Not good eyes, the birds. But once I started looking at other screenshots, with his beak a bit more closed, I came to like his look of mild surprise, in a sort of flickering fondness.
A decent bird, perfectly cromulent.
I don’t know but it swings between 4-6/10
Flash
Oh man, look at this bird! It’s a crying shame he hasn’t returned since the gamecube days, what with his little swirly little hair-feather, sleepy rectangle eyes, and jaunty little hat, and a cute blue coloring. We are robbed of his revival, and I, for one, will weep for this little bird.
Blue Bird Lamentation / 10
Jacob
What is it with these birds and looking tremendously surprised by existence? Jacob is apparently sort of Brazil-inspired, which is an odd choice of country to make into a charmingly tropical bird, but alright. He and Pave can enjoy carnivale festivale together.
6 /10
Jacques
Look at this fantastic little hipster! He has a beard even if it’s absurd for a bird to have a beard! Blond eyebrows! The green beanie! If he’s come out before the existence of Smug, I’d say he’s a cute little lumberjack, but smug officially marks him as a proud resident of... Maybe Portland, but I’m thinking Seattle. Walks around in the rain, goes hiking in the woods on the weekends, sure, but during the week he goes to an independent coffee shop that does artisanal, free-trade coffee. He used to go to Starbucks, but then they got mainstream. Do hipsters of a certain type play the harmonica? Well, they do now because he is one and he does. Look me in the eyes and tell me I’m wrong. You can’t, can you? He’s so wonderfully a thing. Also, he’s got nice eyes, good, big pupils, and does a nice job tying his beanie color into the rest of his design. A good, good boy.
He would only accept a rating if it was ironic. I have no way of telling if my ratings are ironic or if they’ve looped back to being semi-sincere or if they’re just dumb gags and that’s not irony, you guys, so let the fact that he’s a serious contender for my New Horizons goals list be enough.
Jay
He’s really more of a swallow than a jay, looking at his coloring. Specifically, he’s got the red head and blue body and white underside of a Lesser Striped Swallow. So, now you know. That’s a plus for me, though not a super powerful one, and his eyes have that sort of strange staring quality I noted about Anchovy, but the eyebrows are less good. A rather run-of-the-mill bird.
He’s wearing a 6, however, so 6/10.
Jitters
Oh god that is unsettling. The dark-ringed eyes that are just the wrong sort of wide and staring... I feel like he’s seen Things. I don’t want him to show me Things. (What is funny is that I feel like, given the opportunity, I would probably loop back around and love his thousand-yard, sleepless, burnt-out stare. But I haven’t, so it creeps me out.)
Aaaaaaaaaaah! / 10
Joe
This bird is too small and dark for me to really see, but that might be a nice purple. Look, some villagers from the foggy shores of the past just cannot merit comment.
-/10
Lucha
I wonder why Nintendo keeps looking at luchadors and going “You know what this needs to be? A bird.” This is clearly Hawlucha’s little brother, and the effect could be more dramatic or detailed, but it does rather get the job done!
Lucha Libre / 10
Madame Rosa
Well, well, well, a villager with a form of address in their name! How interesting! I like her face, what little of it we can see, and I think her color is appealing. She looks suitably fancy. Honestly, another villager it is a shame to lose.
Admiral Gets To Come Back And That’s Fine But Why Not Rosa? / Villagers Who Didn’t Get Amiibo Cards
Medli
So, here we are. The first of the Amiibo specials! This one is obviously meant to be Medli from Wind Waker, and as an emulation, she’s cute, but please, understand... It’s creepy when fur or feathers or something on an animal character goes for that fair-toned flesh look. The naked mole rat look, except not on a naked mole rat. It’s creepy when custom ponies do it, it’s very creepy when Animal Crossing villagers do it. Please stop.
No Seriously I think about this every time I wanna make a pony of a specific fictional character and then I shudder in deep distaste / Please For the Love of All That Is Good And Holy, Stop. Let Them Have Fur! Or feathers!
Midge
Awwwwwwwwwww! Midge is so cute! Look at those cute little swirls on her cheeks! Her precious little tadpole eyes! She’s a pretty, rosy sort of pink, too. I approve, even if honestly there is no rhyme or reason to her, she is just cute.
(@ o’ v o’ @) / 10
Otis
Who is this guy, and what do I think about him? He looks... Like a bird. That covers that, I think.
-/10
Peck
Peck has a nice Java Sparrow look to him, though not entirely. The eyebrows are such a bright red that I don’t quite dig it, but I have to admit, he is a cute. Not my favorite vaguely Java-Sparrow-y person, though. That will always be Azami!
Drives Safely / 10
Piper
Man, Piper just does not have cute eyes, this image is a lie. She’s got half-circle eyes that make her look kind of bored. And given that she has so little detail, she really needed cute eyes to make me pleased.
3/10, an actual rating that isn’t just me giving a numerical shrug.
Robin
Robin’s pretty rockin’. I like the subtle blush, assuming that’s not a trick of this one screenshot. The little bit of blue “hair” up on his head ties together his tail and. Shame his stomach’s not red all the way down. Commit, Animal Crossing designers! Commit!
Rockin’ Robin: Tweet / Tweet Tweet
Shoukichi
Oh man, it’s a little daruma doll bird! That’s so good! Look at him, he got his wish I guess! Not much else to say, save that I am sad no one has seen him again. I wish he’d come back one day.
One Eye / Two, for that unfilled wish.
Sparro
This is a pretty cute sparrow. You know what he could use? Bigger eyes. I feel the eyes have been an issue with the birds, and I intend to solve this puzzle. ...I think, considering my reactions, it is that they have big round bobble-heads, and so need a big eye to not look weird. Anyway, I appreciate the big dark rings, but not the weird little blush. He looks like he had a little beard, also good.
W(hy is there a missing W?) / Z
Twiggy
Twiggy sure is. The blue on the cheeks and the tail is nicely tied, and I like the very dark stripes on the legs. I have no particular other feeling, but these are good eyes.
5/10, the rating that is me giving a numerical shrug.
Twirp
Oh, I see Nintendo once considered the matter of bird eyes. And making their pupils ginormous. I see. Hm. Well, I guess I do like it better That said, I have no idea what is going on with this creature. Is it meant to evoke a shaved head? Is this creature naked? He looks very naked. Look, just. I respect your saying farewell to me, Twirp. Goodbye.
??????? / 10
The birds have some fun motifs, and we’re seeing a lot of realistic-ish birds, which is fun, but I think we’ll definitely have more enthusiasm-inducing species. Not new time, though. Next time is cows and bulls, and my expectations are low.
