From last fall: One of the reddest reds on the landscape, associates with ericaceous heath belts with minimal light competition. So mainly dry sandstone with shallow nutrient poor soils and good drainage or sandstone barrens. Due to slow growth and an acidic weathering effect associated with the bark cortex and the water retention these species also tend to have incredible lichen diversity.
Citheronia regalis horn devil larva are associated as the primary moth that eats these leaves.
Oxydendrum arboreum
Sourwood, or some call it sour bark tree, chewing on the bark and active phloem was once common practice to alleviate the nerve pain associated with toothaches. The leaves themselves are an anti-gas, anti-inflammatory laxative(strong one at that). In some cases a tea can be made of the leaves that also aids in other issues and have been used to treat urinary infections by native people and early settlers to the Appalachian mountains and ilp.
Right now at llanfair permaculture we have an interesting soil dynamic that may be accessible for species like this due to good drainage and high organic comp as well as good lighting, the other thing is that these seeds don't seem to require any specialized treatment to germinate.

Here I am absolutely chilling in a double heel-toe cam. Unpictured are BOTH of the hand jams on this route. What an absolute classic!

Red River Rocks
Son returned on Friday from his week-long trip to the Red River Gorge, Kentucky with the climbing club from his uni. All of his bones are intact (thank heavens), the weather was decent, and a good time was had. He did mention that he had met a person he was pretty sure wasn't human. Possibly fae of some kind? He showed me a photo of the guy, and I had to agree; that is 98% probability a leprechaun right there. Potentially Fae dude was leaving from the Red to hitchhike across the country westward. Son gave him a full jar of my (locally famous) peach jam for his journey. Hope that brings a little good luck our way.
He also met a young woman who could do a backbend very quickly, then scamper around on all fours in that position. Which made my spine ache just thinking about it. Rock climbers sure are a . . highly individualistic group of people.

The natural Bridge is located within the Red River Gorge which is located in eastern Kentucky. It is a gorgeous place and a nature lovers dream. Plenty of places to hike, kayak, rock climb, fish, camp, and more!
Included in these pictures is Nada tunnel. This tunnel has existed since the early 1900s. Steam locomotives used to haul timber though the tunnel. Only one car can enter the 900ft tunnel at a time. It is amazing and I highly recommend checking it out.
Cave Run lake is also featured in these photos. The lake is in the Daniel Boone national forest which is a wonderful camping location.
Have you ever been to these places?

Silene rotundifolia,
Growing nearly upside down as a sandstone chasmophyte( this is it’s in-situ niche), in a dry rockshelter vs a backcove(humidity ducting terminal), in more exposure to sunlight than many other Ilp endemics. We have hummingbird and butterfly pollinated round leaf catch fly.
As an ILP sandstone endemic species that has barely breached the Allegheny Plateau due to it’s overlap into the ILP it seems to be the most wide spread overall; as geological borders while physical have mixing zones that are never fully abrupt. In ecological systems many factors besides geology and evolutionary time come into play with ranges though these seem to be the main contributors. Gale( or is it Gail) from natives in harmony llc, actually managed to grow these ex-situ in limestone gravel that was unwashed, which shut down my theory about chemistry as a leading factor in it’s range.
We can see that valley of the gods in Illinois had no history of this, The other site that surprised me is a lack of the continued line in Adams, Scioto, Lawrence counties of Ohio. Lewis County Kentucky has none either. Or perhaps the strangest spot missing would be Cuyahoga National Park in Ohio while we have records from a northern county adjacent( most northern pop).
