The Current Situation has revealed deep cracks in our system: replacing public transit with gig economy drivers who don't get health care or sick leave; the gig economy itself; the lethal inadequacy of private-sector broadband and private-sector health-care, and beyond.

The fact that we can simply abolish data-caps (without networks falling over) and the liquid ban (without planes blowing up) reveals that these supposed existential threats were, in fact, arbitrary, authoritarian, rent-seeking bullshit.

Pandemic stimulus, realpolitik edition (permalink)

I've been thinking a lot about what a covid stimulus package could and should look like, and what the possible failure modes and transformative changes could be. Obviously, there's real risk of inflation if handled wrong, because production has halted, so more money could end up chasing fewer goods. That gets ugly quick.

Then there's the risk that we just infuse trillions of no-strings-attached dollars into the finance sector, who use it to make our society even more brittle and unstable by hollowing out reeling companies and grinding down brutalized workers.

Writing about this stuff in public makes a lot of Twitter people with "investor" in their bios very, very angry. They want giant bailouts for the companies they own stocks in, not transformative change. They use the neolib tactic of throwing out a lot of jargon to instil a sense of your technical illiteracy. Complexity is a con-artist's go-to tactic, after all – it's why proposition bets are so complicated, so you can't do the odds in your head (see also: craps tables).

But not every economist believes that sociopathy is pareto optimal. Leading lights like Stephanie Kelton, the mother of Modern Monetary Theory, who can go toe-to-toe with oligarch-apologists from the Chicago School, explaining how public debt really works.

Kelton and AOC appeared on this week's Deconstructed podcast with Mehdi Hasan to discuss the true scale of the bailout that will be needed (far more than $1T) to get the economy working again. That number can come down (by lowering working peoples' outgoings through rent/mortgage/student loan holidays, etc). But the lesson of 2008 is that to be credible, stimulus must be transparent and aimed at the public good, not the donor-class.

Otherwise, Congress risks having its hands tied: it might inject an inadequate and corrupt stimulus that benefits its cronies, then be unable to follow that on with a people's bailout that would help us all.

AOC: "Look at this kind of trash pile of legislation the Republicans have just introduced. I've never seen such a thing in my life of, we're going to give the neediest people less. And we're going to give people who are you know, need help but don't need as much help more."

Kelton: "What people mean when they say, you know, oh, Senator Sanders, you want Medicare for All or you want to make public colleges and universities tuition free, you want to cancel student debt, how are you going to pay for it? Where is the money going to come from? Beautiful judicial snark (permalink)

As Ken "Popehat" White is fond of reminding us, no one snarks quite like a federal judge. And despite being a Trump appointee, Steven C Seeger manages to rip off a couple zingers in this ruling.

At issue: Art Ask Agency is upset that someone is counterfeiting their unicorn-logo merch, such as this unicorn-scented candle:

But Illinois is in covid lockdown, so its case against a bunch of John Doe (alleged) counterfeiters is on hold. Their lawyer has sent a string of motions to the court asking for an emergency hearing so they can proceed, despite the fact that the court clerks are operating on reduced staff and only dealing with matters of the utmost urgency.

The judge is Not Impressed: "At worst, Defendant might sell a few more counterfeit products in the meantime. But Plaintiff makes no showing about anticipated loss of sales. One wonders if fake fantasy products are experiencing brisk sales at the moment."

The judge takes notice of the time a telephonic hearing would consume, "especially given the girth of the Plaintiff's filings."

"Plaintiff argues that it will suffer an 'irreparable injury' if this court does not put a stop to the infringing unicorns and knock-off elves."

"The world is facing a real emergency. Plaintiff is not."

Marc Davis's Haunted Mansion (permalink)

Along with Passport to Dreams Old and New, the Long Forgotten Blog is the best source of information on the history, design, and evolution of Disney theme-parks.

But Long Forgotten focuses on a single ride, the glorious, brilliant Haunted Mansion.

The history of the Haunted Mansion was completely upended in late 2019, when Christopher Merritt published his "Marc Davis in His Own Words," a two-volume compendium of journals and interviews with the legendary Imagineer, who was Merritt's mentor.

Merritt is an Imagineer, an artist, and a historian, who has direct, lifelong connections with the original Imagineering team. He has unparalleled access, inside knowledge and perspective. So yeah, that is a fucking great book.

Marc Davis was the best character designer in the original Imagineer cohort: he created the Country Bears, the Pirates, and the Haunted Mansion ghosts. He was a spectacular visual gag master, too. And he was one of the (many) legendary Imagineers who had a hand in designing the Haunted Mansion. That ride had so many different iterations, drafts, plans and schemes, and the final product is so wonderful in part because of their remnants.

But Davis actually designed a full-on Haunted Mansion attraction, from start to finish, and those plans are kicking around. Based on those, Long Forgotten has created a narrative account of what it would be like to tour "Marc Davis's Haunted Mansion."

It's…interesting. Davis had some really fun ideas like meeting up with a talking bust (or raven).

And there are great gags (Davis designed the "three-part" stretching portraits, after all).

I mean. this would have been so freaking boss.

But the real meat is something called "The Most Dangerous Ghost":

"The final picture is perhaps behind black drapes which raise as the ghost host calls out attention to it. As the drapes part we see a painting that has everything in it except a figure. There is perhaps a vague image where the figure should be. The ghost host reacts in a frightened manner. He explains that this is terrible because this is the most dangerous ghost in the mansion. When he climbs out of his picture he mingles with the guests until he has turned one of them into a ghost. He describes the ghost's appearance and its omnipotent powers. He suggests again that everyone should stay in a tight group; this evil ghost loves to pick off stragglers. He suggests that the group be wary of sliding panels, gusts of cold air and etc."

Long Forgotten: "The MDG character undercuts the intellectually sloppy notion that all Davis cared about was making the HM funny."

LF goes on to make a good case that Davis wanted to incorporate many of Rolly Crump's gorgeous "Museum of the Weird" designs into his Mansion.

Davis's seance room seems to flirt with MDG some more: "The presence of the villain ghost makes itself felt and these older retired ghosts are frightened. Whatever we have used to indicate the nearness of the villain ghost would be repeated here."

Davis once planned for a Mansion filled with "working class ghosts" (carpenters, soldiers, boxers, etc). The only ones that survived were the coachmen in the graveyard sequence.

And his bride sequence was very explicit about wedding-night murders, culminating with MDG manifesting amid the guests: "He starts a wild mocking laugh. It clouds up outside. The curtains blow inward. It starts to rain along with thunder and lightning. "Outside we see a figure take form and it moves into the room. The rain comes into the room with the figure and a pool of water forms around its feet."

This is gorgeously scary, but as Long Forgotten points out, it has little re-play value (similar to Tomororwland's Alien Encounter): "The gag about the Ghost Host revealing himself as the Most Dangerous Ghost has the obvious disadvantage that it can surprise you only once. Pretty soon everyone knows the 'secret,' and as its usefulness as a genuine shock or scare tactic fades its status as pure camp inevitably increases."

That all said, "We learn what we should already know but sometimes forget: Marc Davis was never an imperious, one-man show. He was a team player. He interacted creatively with the work already done by previous Imagineers, displaying in this outline nothing but respect for what was good in what they had done."

1 – ¿Escribes con tu verdadero nombre o utilizas pseudónimo?

–África es mi verdadero nombre, sí.

2 – ¿Cuál es tu nombre completo?

– Mi nombre completo es África Huertas González, suerte que es un tanto diferente, por eso decidí conservarlo cuando iba a publicar mi primer libro. Mucha gente me ha dicho que suena bien jajajaja

3 – ¿Cuál es tu signo del zodíaco?

–Piscis. Nací en marzo, pero nunca he sido aficionada a esto.

4 – ¿Qué día es tu cumpleaños?

–Por suerte o por desgracia poca gente olvida mi fecha de cumpleaños, ya que nací un 11 de marzo de 1991. Años después se sucedió la tragedia.

5 – ¿Podemos saber tu edad o es un misterio?

–¡Claro, sin problemas! Tengo 26 años, aunque comencé mi andadura literaria con veintitrés años.

6 – ¿Prefieres café o infusión?

– Infusión, siempre, y si es poleo menta mucho mejor.

7 – ¿Eres de Coca-cola o de Pepsi?

–Pepsi, aunque lo descubrí hace poco jajajaja

8 – ¿Te gusta más lo dulce o lo salado?

–Soy muy dulzona, siempre lo he sido. Intento controlarme, pero el chocolate es mi debilidad.

9 – ¿Cuál es tu comida preferida?

–Amo la comida, así que me lo ponéis un tanto difícil. Puedo decir que casi cualquier cosa que cocine mi padre o mi madre, aunque si me cocino yo… jajajaja

10 – ¿Cuál es tu olor favorito?

–Me gustan los olores frescos, naturales. Las rosas recién cortadas, el olor a vainilla, canela… a moras.

11 – ¿Y el color?

–Rojo, sin duda alguna.

12 – ¿Tienes mascotas? de ser si ¿Qué es/son? y ¿Cómo se llaman?

–Puf… ¿Qué si tengo? Me falta casa para tanto animalito jajajaja Tengo cinco gatos y tres perros, pero porque vivo en un chalé bastante grande, eh. Mis perros se llaman Covadonga, Narnia y Balton. Mis gatos: Copito de Nieve, Garbanzo, Parish, Gala y Fea, sí, Fea. La pobre es muy fea, pero la queremos igual jajajajaja

13 – ¿Eres de usar deportivas o zapatos?

–Según mi estado de ánimo, aunque suelo terminar con unas buenas zapatillas.

14 – ¿Cuál es tu lugar de nacimiento?

–Nací en Valencia ciudad, aunque mi familia y mis amigos son en su mayoría de Quart de Poblet, donde he hecho mi vida.

15 – ¿Ibas al colegio público o privado?

–A ninguno de ambos jajajaja Fui a un concertado, al Sagrado Corazón, donde viví una de las etapas más bonitas de mi vida. Conservo a casi todas mis amistades de entonces y, aún, sigo teniendo contacto con mis antiguos profesores que suelen venir a mis presentaciones.

16 – ¿Eras popular o te mantenías apartad@?

–No sabría decirte. No iba marginada, no, pero mi clase siempre fue una piña. Todos juntos a todas partes jajajaja

17 – ¿Jugabas más al fútbol o con muñecas?

–Ambas. Me encantaba jugar a muñecas, de hecho, creaba historias con ellas a todas horas, pero siempre ha gustado el deporte de casi todo tipo. Jugué a voleibol durante mucho tiempo y, ahora, practico unos cuantos deportes.

18 – ¿Entre tus amiguitos había más niños o niñas?

–Niños, pero porque en mi grupo solo éramos seis chicas y casi doce chicos jajajaja Luego cuando crecí sí es cierto que me relacioné con mis amigas de toda la vida más.

19 – ¿A qué edad tuviste tu primer novi@?

–Uy… me vais a sacar los colores jajajajajaja

20 – ¿Sofá, manta y una buena película o sentarte en tu lugar favorito y leer?

–Depende del tiempo jajaja Los días lluviosos soy mucho de película y mantita, pero me gusta tumbarme en la cama con un buen libro entre mis manos.

21 – ¿Cuál es tu serie favorita?

–Pues lo cierto es que no soy mucho de ver series ahora mismo, el trabajo y mi rutina no me lo permite. Me enganché a Juego de Tronos y ahora estoy viendo Sense8.

22 – ¿Qué película ves mil veces y no te aburre?

–Anastasia de dibujos animados. En realidad, casi cualquiera de las películas infantiles de ahora, son tan bonitas.

23 – ¿Eres de playa o de montaña?

–Siempre he creído que playa, pero me encanta la montaña. Soy Historiadora y he podido ir de excavaciones arqueológicas alguna vez, por lo que me gusta el silencio y la tranquilidad que se respira en medio de un bosque.

24 – ¿A dónde te gustaría viajar?

–¿Dónde no me gustaría viajar? Jajajaja Mi lista es interminable, aunque por suerte he podido viajar mucho años atrás. A los dieciséis salí de España y le cogí el gusto al avión y las escapadas. He estado en Escocia, Italia, Francia, Bélgica, Cuba…

25 – ¿Dónde vives a día de hoy?

–En medio de la nada, como suelo decir. Lo que tiene vivir en el campo.

26 – ¿Si pudieras mudarte a cualquier parte del mundo cuál elegirías?

–Aquel donde se encuentre la gente que quiero. Siempre he querido irme lejos, pero ahora, con la madurez que se gana con el tiempo sé que los viajes se disfrutan precisamente por eso, porque son viajes. Pero siempre vuelves a casa.

27 – ¿Cómo te gustan l@s hombres/mujeres?

–Que me hagan reír sobre todo jajajaja

28 – ¿Cuál es tu estado civil actualmente?

–Mira que os gusta, eh. Actualmente estoy con alguien.

29 – ¿Estudias o trabajas?

–Estudio y trabajo. Nunca se deja de aprender y, en mi caso, que siempre me ha gustado demasiadas cosas, aún más. Actualmente soy socia y copropietaria de Red Paradise Ediciones, una editorial centrada en apoyar y dar una oportunidad a los autores que comienzan, aunque contamos también con autores ya consagrados.

30 – ¿Es fácil compaginar la escritura con ello?

–Sí, ahora sí. Este trabajo me ocupa muchísimas horas del día, de lunes a domingo, pero solo consigue avivar más mi amor por la literatura, por lo que, en cuento tengo un ratito aprovecho para escribir.

31 – ¿A qué edad escribiste tu primer libro?

–¿Publicado? Jajajaja Llevo escribiendo desde… ni lo recuerdo. Toda mi vida. Tengo un par de novelas terminadas de cuando solo era una niña, aunque no me puse mucho más en serio hasta que terminé mi etapa universitaria. Al terminar el Máster y no encontrar trabajo decidí dar rienda suelta a esta pasión.

32 – ¿Qué te impulsó a hacerlo?

–El tiempo libre que antes no tenía jajajaja Escribir siempre me ha parecido una necesidad, la necesidad imperiosa de plasmar esta historia increíble que tienes en la cabeza, aunque no sepas que será de ella después.

33 – ¿Cómo fueron tus inicios como escritor@?

–Todos los comienzos son difíciles. Todo cuesta trabajo y esfuerzo, aunque soy una persona muy constante. La constancia me ha hecho llegar donde estoy y me siento orgullosa de ellos. Me moví mucho, contacté con mucha gente, seguí trabajando para mejorar cada día… todo ello me ha llevado a este punto exacto de ahora. Y me encanta.

34 – ¿Has sentido el apoyo de la gente de tu entorno? ¿De quién en especial?

–Mis padres, sobre todo. Ellos siempre me han apoyado siempre, hiciera lo que hiciera. Mi hermano, mis tíos, mis primos…

35 – ¿Qué es lo que más te gusta de escribir?

–Dar vida a algo que no existe. La magia de hacerlo real en tu cabeza y, después, en la cabeza de los lectores. Para mí, Abbie, Bryan, Alice, Jordan, Cora, Nieve… todos son personas que aparecieron de pronto y desarrollaron su propia personalidad. La libertad de crearlo todo como quiero, sin más.

36 – ¿Y lo que menos?

–Cuando no puedes hacerlo o te atascas. En ese momento no puedes quitártelo de la cabeza, pase unas horas, unos días o unos meses, no importa. Esa sensación de que va a estallar tu cabeza en cualquier momento jajajaja

37 – ¿Quién suele leer tus libros, hombres, mujeres o ambos?

–Sobre todo mujeres, para qué engañarnos. Aunque me sorprendo cada vez más con hombres que también lo hacen, y me encanta jajaja

38 – ¿Cómo fue tu primera presentación?

–¡Un éxito! Fueron muchos amigos, casi todos mis familiares y mucha gente que me conocía desde que era pequeña y desconocía mi afición por la escritura. Vinieron profesores y vecinos que hacía años no veía. Fue muy bonito y emocionante.

39 – ¿Alguna anécdota de alguna que recuerdes con especial cariño?

–Pues ahora mismo no caigo…

40 – ¿Cuándo firmas libros utilizas la misma dedicatoria para todos o eres de personalizar?

–Soy de las que personaliza, sí. De hecho, suelo ir a las presentaciones con una libreta donde he anotado previamente algunas dedicatorias a personas que sé que irán, porque no me fallan nunca. Sí es cierto, que cuando estoy en ferias o no conozco a la persona suelo tener una dedicatoria comodín jajajaja

41 – ¿Cómo nos lo dedicarías a nosotras?

–Para Cris y Lali, con todo mi cariño. El mundo es más hermoso con un buen libro que logre emocionarte. Espero que este lo haga. Con cariño, África.

42 – ¿Qué temas has tocado en tus libros que creas importantes?

–En mi primer libro, No Sin Ti, toque el tema de la muerte, la desesperación, enfermedades y el amor a la vida. Siempre intento dejar algo en cada uno de mis libros, pero me gusta la idea de que existe muchas formas de amor, no solo la de los romances de película.

43 – ¿Hay alguno que te haya marcado especialmente y por qué?

–Si os referís a mis libros, no puedo negar que No Sin Ti lo hizo, aún sigue haciéndolo cada vez que un lector me escribe contándome lo duro y hermoso que fue leerlo. Fue mi primer libro, pero es la historia en sí la que me atrapó sin remedio. Tantos matices, tantas emociones juntas.

44 – ¿Prefieres crear personajes buenos o malos?

–De ambos, aunque suelo llevarlos al terreno de lo bueno al final jajajajaja Soy de esas personas que cree que nadie es bueno ni malo por completo, todos somos un poco de ambos a lo largo de nuestra vida y, mis personajes les pasa un poco de lo mismo. Dani, por ejemplo, uno de los personajes de Mi Pequeño Milagro es el ejemplo perfecto. Todo el mundo creerá que es un monstruo, yo solo creo que las situaciones nos llevan a tomar decisiones, a veces acertadas otras no, pero así es el ser humano.

45 – ¿Cómo surgió la idea de tu último libro?

–Nieve. Nacida del hielo y la luz saldrá en noviembre de este año (está a puntito) La historia surgió precisamente después de ver la fotografía que finalmente ha resultado ser la portada. Vi la imagen hace cosa de un año en redes sociales, siguiendo a la fotógrafa (por cierto, es una fotógrafa finlandesa) y me enamoré completamente de ella. Supe que esa chica de la imagen tenía una historia y, pronto me la susurró. Mi prima pequeña llevaba tiempo pidiéndome una historia que pudiera leer y así supe que mi próximo libro sería juvenil. Al principio solo iba a ser Nieve, pero al tener que dividir la historia en dos partes, Nacida del hielo y la luz apareció en mi cabeza como subtítulo. La historia me emocionó porque cambiaba de registro con ella. Me adentré en una época medieval y me fue enganchando cada vez más.

46 – ¿Alguna vez te sientes agobiad@ mientras escribes? ¿Qué haces para relajarte?

–Lo cierto es que no. Escribir me relaja, deja que todo lo que tengo en mi cabeza fluya.

47 – ¿Como afrontas los momentos de bloqueo?

–Bloqueos como tal no he tenido, menos mal. Han sido, más bien, parones momentáneos, aunque en su mayoría se han debido a mi mala costumbre de ir de una historia a otra según me apetece. ¡Tengo en marcha demasiadas!

48 – ¿Utilizas momentos reales en tus libros?

–Anécdotas que me cuenta, alguna vez, pero no suelo hacerlo.

49 – ¿Te atreverías a escribir algo totalmente diferente a lo que sueles hacer? ¿Qué?

–Sí, de hecho, no me gusta definirme, aunque finalmente todos lo hacemos. Escribo lo que la historia me pida, aunque sí es cierto que siempre estará la historia de amor en ella. Actualmente estoy con una Histórica que me tiene muy enganchada, aunque se necesita mucho tiempo para ello. Tengo algo por ahí de misterio, sobrenatural, fantástico…

50 – ¿Te identificas con alguno de tus personajes? de ser así ¿con cuál?

–No me identifico como tal con ninguno, pero me fascina Abbie en todas sus formas jajajaja Es una chica segura de sí misma, pero al mismo tiempo insegura. Alocada, amiga de sus amigos, pero muy reservada.

51 – ¿Hay algún momento del día propicio para escribir o las ideas solo surgen sin más?

–Suelen surgir sin más, aunque es cierto que algunas noches la inspiración ha sido más fructífera. Sin embargo, suelo escribir de día.

52 – ¿Qué lugar te ayuda a inspirarte para escribir?

–No tengo un lugar concreto que cumpla dicha función. Los lugares que me inspiran suelo retenerlos en mi memoria y usarlos después en las historias, pero soy capaz de escribir en cualquier lugar.

53 – ¿Hay alguna persona especial que te inspire a la hora de escribir?

–Persona concreta no. Cuando suelo ir de presentaciones de otros autores o autores, cuando voy a eventos o me paso una tarde hablando de libros o ideas; entonces sí, mi inspiración se dispara jajajaja

54 – ¿Tienes un espacio preferido para escribir en casa? ¿Cómo está ambientado?

–Suelo hacerlo en mi habitación, pero simplemente por la tranquilidad. Es un espacio amplio con mucha luz natural.

55 – ¿Necesitas silencio o prefieres tener música de fondo para escribir?

–Escribo con música, eso ya lo he dicho muchas veces. Según el lugar donde esté ambientada la historia recurro a un repertorio u otro. Por ejemplo, cuando escribí ¿Y si te digo que te quiero? me pasé semanas escuchando country. Cuando me puse con la historia ambientada en Sudáfrica, solo escuchaba canciones africanas jajajaja Me ayuda a ponerme en situación.

56 – ¿Que tipo de música escuchas?

–No tengo un género concreto ahora mismo. Escucho lo que me apetece cuando me apetece, aunque influye mucho el estado de ánimo.

57 – ¿Cual es tu grupo o cantante favorito?

–Me gusta muchísimo Vetusta Morla, pero ahora escucho de todo.

58 – ¿Qué canción te encanta escuchar y no importa el paso del tiempo, sigue haciéndolo?

–Tarzán jajajaja me motiva mucho la canción principal de la banda sonora de la película de dibujos de Tarzán, es escucharla y no dejar de moverme.

59 – ¿Que melodía suena en tu móvil cuando te llaman?

–Actualmente, Malibu de Miley Cyrus.

60 – ¿Eres de Apple o Android?

–Android siempre jajajaja

61 – ¿Qué redes sociales utilizas?

–Publiqué el primer libro con una que preferiría no mencionar. Los otros dos, ¿Y si te digo que te quiero? y Mi pequeño milagro salieron con Editorial Lxl. Mi última novela saldrá con Editorial Red Paradise.

–No, aún no me he adentrado en ese mundo.

–Creo que son una ayuda importante a los autores que intentamos hacernos un hueco. Ofrecen más visibilidad.

SYNOPSIS (FROM DC WIKIA)

A powerful post-hypnotic suggestion turns the seven original Justice League members into mind-controlled pawns, who are forced to reassemble the seven Appellax meteorites in which the alien foes of their first adventure came to Earth. The later members of the League are alerted to the plight of their comrades when J'onn J'onzz battles Firestorm to reclaim the first meteor fragment in the JLA satellite. Former member Green Arrow, brought to the meeting by Firestorm and Black Canary, recalls the others' memories of that first case, and the new members set out to battle their team-mates. 

The Phantom Stranger intervenes to give Aquaman a victory over the Red Tornado; Wonder Woman escapes from Zatanna on Paradise Island; Green Lantern over-comes the Atom; the Flash defeats the Elongated Man; Batman evades both Green Arrow and Black Canary; and Superman uses a robot to trick Hawkman, who is rescued from death in space only by Adam Strange's Zeta-beam. While the other members are battling old comrades, the charter members, having no memory of the years since the League's formation, see their former teammates as unknown villains, and thus are not held back in their efforts to battle them. While the defeated members rendezvous with Firestorm and Snapper Carr aboard the satellite, the mesmerized original members meet at the site of their first headquarters, only to have the gathered meteorites erupt with the seed-clone duplicate forms of the villainous Appellax aliens.

Their memories restored by shock, the JLA combats the aliens, but is soundly beaten. They then join forces with the other members to seek out and destroy the seed-clones in teams: Batman, Black Canary, Green Arrow, Hawkman, Superman, Wonder Woman, and Zatanna overcome the wooden, crystal, and mercurial creatures; Aquaman, Elongated Man, Flash, and Red Tornado battle the glass and fire beings; and Atom, Firestorm, Green Lantern, and the Martian Manhunter take on the stone giant and the rock successfully. With the menace ended, Snapper Carr and J'onn J'onzz take their leave, and Green Arrow reconsiders his earlier decision, rejoining the team as a regular member.

REVIEW

I kind of feel bad for Gerry Conway after reading that editorial. It’s title is “the first two hundred”. He wasn’t aware that it was pretty much the end (as this title ends a little after the Crisis, an event that his main artist was heavily involved in). He also says that they tried to do a “Gardner Fox” story. And they succeeded. Now, this is my personal opinion (like, almost everything I write under “Review”), but doing a Gardner Fox story is not a good thing in 1982. I am not sure how readers felt about Fox in the sixties and forties (judging by the letters, he was a fan-favorite), but to me, his writing is just not polished, and it never seemed to get better, at least in comic-books.

The result is a very repetitive story (one of the big no- no’s of storytelling), with a formula so predictable that it only takes one chapter to know how the story will continue, and by the time you get to the climax, you just don’t care anymore.

There are some improvements, though. The main story following the new leaguers at the satellite is entertaining.

But perhaps the best thing about this story is the art. That is the only thing that keeps you going when the story fails. Brian Bolland and Joe Kubert are perhaps the gems of this issue.

Isaac Olson’s year in review

This was my first year writing for Dusted. As I tried to nail down what I was looking for in a record, I returned frequently to John Berger’s essay, “The Ideal Critic and the Fighting Critic”. Berger evaluated art by asking, “does this work help or encourage men [sic] to know and claim their social rights?” It’s not that artists “can or should be primarily concerned with the justice of a social cause,” but that “a valid work of art promises in some way or another the possibility of an increase, an improvement...it increases our awareness of our own potentiality”. It’s the identification with and negotiation between different ways of seeing (and hearing) that tears down the walls. Communion, singularity, freedom: states all the more precious for being in short supply as another bullshit year in Trumpistan ground inexorably on.  

The usual caveats apply:

1.)    I spent most of 2018 discovering older records.

2.)    I missed a ton of great records this year.

3.)     There are plenty of records I’ve heard recently that, given more time, would likely have made this list.

4.)    These aren’t the most important records of 2018, just the ones that meant the most to me.

The utopian vibe is grounded a bit by McCraven’s heavy editorial hand, and his skittering, Dilla-indebted production is so dense that it’s a lot to take over the course of 90 minutes. Treat it like four city-centric EPs, and it’s one of the most rewarding listens of the year.

He has proven to the world he is as great a despot as Hitler. Yesterday was a dark day for the Ukraine. An even darker day for the world if the war moves beyond Ukraine's borders. The Washington Post's editorial this morning made some pertinent observations: An aggressor's bombs and tanks are wreaking horror and havoc on a weaker neighbor.....Civilized life is being overwhelmed by blood and fire.....Threatens to spread, the U.S. is once again called upon to respond. It is fortunate NATO exists. Its value will unquestionably be reflected with regard to the Ukraine situation. NATO is together, trained, and ready to go. Excuse the repetition, what Putin is doing is evil. Putin is evil. His words evil. Especially when he subtly threatens nuclear reaction to those who interfere. Things happen that have the smell of dead fish. Happens in all walks of life. The law no exception. A three year investigation has been ongoing into Trump by the Manhattan District Attorney's office. Authorized by Cyrus Vance who after many years in the job, did not run for reelection in November. Vance a well known and respected prosecutor. He appointed two top prosecutors to lead the Trump probe. Carey Dunne and Mark Pomerantz. The Trump prosecution staff consists of the two plus 25 other attorneys, paralegals and analysts. The new DA elected to replace Vance is Alvin Bragg. A Democrat as Vance was. Alvin Bragg not a Cyrus Vance. Bragg appears to have abandoned the investigation into the former President. Vance had authorized a grand jury. Witnesses have been presented before the grand jury through this past December. Bragg took office January 1. He has prohibited any further witnesses to be called before the grand jury. The grand jury's "life" expires April 1. It is believed the grand jury has sufficient evidence to indict and a trial thereafter to convict Trump. Dunne and Pomerantz's hands have been tied by Bragg. He apparently has prohibited any further witness to testify nor the grand jury to vote. It appears he is waiting for the grand jury's legal life to expire. Dunne and Pomerantz resigned this week in protest. When two top respected attorneys do that, it is a clear indication something is amiss. An investigation into the matter is warranted. For lovers of art, Key West's annual Old Art Days Festival is an event not to be missed. It is this weekend - saturday and sunday - from 10-5 each day. It will be held at the Truman Waterfront Park. One hundred ten artists will be exhibiting their works. Jack Baron was an artist and dear friend. For many years. He passed away some 10 years ago. His work unique. His specialty was painting black women. I have been a collector most of my adult life. I purchased my first Jack Baron at the Old Island Art Festival 27 years ago. A Black Madonna and Child. A magnificent piece! It hangs with pride in my home to this day. It also is my favorite Baron piece. I have 14 Baron works. I was not aware I had purchased the greatest number of his works till Jack died. A reporter called Jack's lifetime partner Bob Burton and interviewed him re Jack, his works, etc. Bob told him he should call me also as I was the person who had the largest collection of Jack's works. Jack also did tapestries. If he especially liked a painting he had done, he would take a year sitting on his couch watching TV at night doing something I believe called crewling. Whatever. When done, he sold them. He did very few. I purchased 2. $10,000 a piece. One is Adam and Eve in the Garden of Paradise. The other his mother. He did her as a black woman wearing a long red gown. One reason I had so many of Jack's paintings is I had purchased a large home on the ocean in Key Haven. I did my dining room solely in Jack Baron's works. The room was a joy. Three walls of Jack Baron and the fourth a huge window. He had many friends. A group of us would meet early every morning at his studio which also served as his gallery. We would sit around drinking coffee and solve the world's problems. They were good times. Enjoy your day!

While Instagram has hit a plateau, and a good portion of its users are giving algorithm-free app Vero a go, we can still see a new cycle of fresh trends.

Stories Minimalist Editorials

It’s well-established by now, that Stories is the feature that nurtures creative expression, and has emerged as a modern-day substitute for newsletters and mini editorials. We were waiting for it to escalate quickly and become more nuanced with time. The new wave, shows us a turn towards minimalism, while leaving the maximalist days of overcrowded Stories (remember image+video+sketches?) behind. The ephemeral nature of the Stories, which contradicts the evergreen feed content, justifies this tendency, which is perfect for the fast-paced consumption of them: little time in tandem with demand for increased Stories production leads to minimalism for the contentment of all parties involved.

Everything Coming Up Roses

Flowers are having a lasting moment, but lately, we’re in for a blast from the past. Blame it on Valentine’s Day, or on a mood for something a tad more classic, roses-are-red, and there’s no need for a poem because they’re here to stay. After all, how many Birds of Paradise and Monsteras can an Instagrammer take? Not many, I’ll tell you that and since we’re a few breaths away from springtime, users turn to creative representation of it after a long and difficult winter. We are in need of reminders of our childhood and teen years, when a rose was a symbol of youth, love, and daydreaming.

Beyond The Rainbow

We’ve seen colour sequences conquering the feed, time, and again – and the rainbow pattern is always a winning one. As summertime approaches, seasonal excitement is reflected in this familiar gradience that will always be pleasant to the eye. Again, a seasonal pattern is part of the driving force behind it but a break from monochromation is more needed than ever. The frenzy of the “Colour of the year”, whether that is called “Millennial Pink” or “Millennial Yellow” or “Ultra Violet” leaves something to be desired after fast consumption and market penetration. Maybe we don’t need to crown individual colours anymore. Maybe it’s time t really take them all in, don’t you think?
