Isaac Olson’s year in review
This was my first year writing for Dusted. As I tried to nail down what I was looking for in a record, I returned frequently to John Berger’s essay, “The Ideal Critic and the Fighting Critic”. Berger evaluated art by asking, “does this work help or encourage men [sic] to know and claim their social rights?” It’s not that artists “can or should be primarily concerned with the justice of a social cause,” but that “a valid work of art promises in some way or another the possibility of an increase, an improvement...it increases our awareness of our own potentiality”. It’s the identification with and negotiation between different ways of seeing (and hearing) that tears down the walls. Communion, singularity, freedom: states all the more precious for being in short supply as another bullshit year in Trumpistan ground inexorably on.
The usual caveats apply:
1.) I spent most of 2018 discovering older records.
2.) I missed a ton of great records this year.
3.) There are plenty of records I’ve heard recently that, given more time, would likely have made this list.
4.) These aren’t the most important records of 2018, just the ones that meant the most to me.
Album of the Year
Marisa Anderson— Cloud Corner (Thrill Jockey)
Cloud Corner by Marisa Anderson
This was the most restorative, cathartic record I heard this year, and it’s a huge leap forward for my favorite living guitarist.
Think Locally, Dance Globally
The Fossil Lickers— S/T (Blue Hole)
The Fossil Lickers by The Fossil Lickers
This tape brought me more joy than pretty much anything else I heard this year, but I’m a fiddle tune fanatic. Non-fanatics need, at most, one album of old time fiddle tunes every few years. Make it this one.
I’m Not Here to Hunt Rabbits: Guitar and Folk Styles from Botswana—V/A (Pirahna)
I'm Not Here To Hunt Rabbits by Various Artists
Angelique Kidjo— Remain in Light (Kravenworks)
youtube
Follow Your Arrow
Kacey Musgraves— The Golden Hour (MCA Nashville)
youtube
I’m a poptimism skeptic because pop criticism frequently confuses the popular with the important and the important with the good. Plus, I don’t like when money and attention are directed towards people who have too much of both. That said, I regret to inform my fellow contrarians that The Golden Hour is as good as everyone says. Musgraves dosed mainstream country with a much needed hit of empathy, humility, and starry-eyed wonder.
Neko Case—Hell-On (Anti-)
Hell-On by Neko Case
Neko Case comes to terms with the fact that letting people in and ceding control doesn’t tame your artistic vision: it enhances it, and make it stronger, weirder, fuller. Quoth Kacey Musgraves, “Love is a wild thing.”
John Prine— The Tree of Forgiveness (Oh Boy)
The Tree of Forgiveness by John Prine
John Prine, on what is hopefully not his last album, has chilled out enough to fully embrace his role as America’s cornpone bodhisattva. Prine on heaven: “I'm gonna have a cocktail: vodka and ginger ale/Yeah I'm gonna smoke a cigarette that's nine miles long/I'm gonna kiss that pretty girl on the tilt-a-whirl/Yeah this old man is goin' to town.” Kacey Musgraves on heaven: “My idea of heaven is to burn one with John Prine.” Amen.
The Road Reversed
Daniel Bachman— The Morning Star (Three Lobed)
The Morning Star by Daniel Bachman
This was the sound of the gut-level anxiety and wounded hope I felt throughout 2018.
Nathan Bowles—Plainly Mistaken (Paradise of Bachelors)
Plainly Mistaken by Nathan Bowles
As a critic, my reaction to Plainly Mistaken is that it’s an intriguing trip through the American Primitive genre’s favorite touchstones: Appalachian picking, smeared drones, spiritual jazz, and modernist minimalism. As an amateur banjo player myself, my reaction is awe and envy.
The Newbies Lift Off
Tierra Whack— Whack World (Self Released)
youtube
I don’t listen to nearly as much hip-hop as I used to, but this late breaking favorite is weirder, braver, slyer, funnier, more frustrating and, by a damn sight, catchier than just about any other avant garde or experimental record I’ve heard this year.
Makaya McCraven—Universal Beings (International Anthem)
Universal Beings by Makaya McCraven
Makaya McCraven convened some of the best young-ish jazz musicians working today for sessions in four cities: New York, Chicago, London, and Los Angeles, the results of which he chopped, remixed, and looped. The utopian vibe is grounded a bit by McCraven’s heavy editorial hand, and his skittering, Dilla-indebted production is so dense that it’s a lot to take over the course of 90 minutes. Treat it like four city-centric EPs, and it’s one of the most rewarding listens of the year.
Sons of Kemet—Your Queen is a Reptile (Impulse)
youtube
Martial jazz/dub/free-funk soundtrack to the decolonized, matriarchal revolution by its token all-male house band.
Andrew Bernstein—An Exploded View of Time (Hausu Mountain)
An Exploded View of Time by Andrew Bernstein
Tashi Dorji and Tyler Damon— Leave No Trace: Live in St. Louis (Family Vineyard)
Leave No Trace: Live In St. Louis by Tashi Dorji & Tyler Damon
2018 MVP: Mary Lattimore
Mary Lattimore—Hundreds of Days (Ghostly)
Hundreds of Days by Mary Lattimore
Meg Baird and Mary Lattimore—Ghost Forests (Third Lobed)
Ghost Forests by Meg Baird and Mary Lattimore
Velvet Hammer in a Cowboy Band
I’m a sucker for pedal steel guitar, and I’m a sucker for weird music. It was a good year for weird pedal steel guitar music.
Barry Walker Jr.— Diaspora Urkontinent (Driftless)
Diaspora Urkontinent by Barry Walker
Venetian Snares x Daniel Lanois—(Planet Mu)
Venetian Snares x Daniel Lanois by Venetian Snares x Daniel Lanois
Peter Brötzmann and Heather Leigh— Sparrow Nights (Trost)
Sparrow Nights by Brötzmann / Leigh
Saariselka—Ceres (Longform Editions)
Ceres by Saariselka

Venetian Snares x Daniel Lanois - a great collaboration in which both voices are equal and complementary
No collaboration is unlikely when the end goals are the same. A meeting of two artists who illustrate different corners of the musical landscape, come together to create a new statement that takes their collective strengths to higher elevations and encompasses new terrains.
So it is on the first collaborative journey of Canadian musicians Venetian Snares and Daniel Lanois. What started as mutual respect for one another’s work, led to several years of a creative germination resulting in an eight-track full-length exploration released May 4th on Timesig/Planet Mu.
The path began in 2014, after Lanois reached out to Venetian Snares (Aaron Funk) as a fan of his work. The project started to take root in Summer of 2016, after Funk hung around Toronto between shows. Taking his gear to Lanois’ studio, the two began to play for the first time together in what would prove to be a formative moment in their creative journey together.
“I love making music with Dan, he has a real understanding of how to create a world and build what may exist within that world. Bassdrums are trombones and they are a colossal whale which floats on clouds of leaves speaking to the blast furnace feeding the mammoth. A small painting of forest horses hangs in the cranium of the sea horse.” – Aaron Funk
Recorded live in a former Buddhist temple-turned-studio in Toronto, 'Venetian Snares x Daniel Lanois' travels to new zones in what Lanois describes as “a body of work driven by exploration”. Like all the best collaborations, it's brought something new out of both musicians. Equipped with their production acuity, they let their natural workflow guide them through uncharted waters. Funk laid the groundwork with drums while Lanois rode the pedal steel, weaving their sounds together in a new sonic tapestry. The two ultimately landed at their destination, their work ready to be shared with those willing to explore.
In Daniel Lanois ’own words:
"To come upon a new form reassures the head that frontier lives on The unlikely pairing of Venetian Snares and Daniel Lanois may very well have provided us with a nice new pair of shoes to walk to new sonic frontier A melange of gospel and electronics As madness of the world trips over its heels these Canadian sonic innovators prepare for travel A body of work driven by exploration, brings to us in our modern times what we remember and admire from the Jazz explorations of the 50s A splintering An appetite for the unknown"
All tracks composed and produced by Daniel Lanois and Aaron Funk. Published by Mutesong/Penny Farthing Music/The Bicycle Music Company. Recorded and Arranged by Dangerous Wayne Lorenz. Mastered by Beau Thomas at Teneightseven Mastering. Original Art by Daniel Lanois. Art manipulation by Adam CK Vollick. Design by Marthe A. Vannebo. (p)&(c)2018 Timesig.

Venetian Snares x Daniel Lanois — S/T (Planet Mu)
Venetian Snares x Daniel Lanois by Venetian Snares x Daniel Lanois
The pairing of producer Daniel Lanois with breakcore artist Aaron Funk, a.k.a Venetian Snares, seems like a mismatch. Lanois’s production paints dark seas and wide open spaces while Funk’s is so dense that it overwhelms all sense of location and proportion. Comprising a series of lightly-edited improvisations recorded at Lanois’s studio, Venetian Snares x Daniel Lanois pits Lanois’ laconic style against Funk’s frenzy until the contradictions between them are heightened and collapse, resulting in a deeply weird and captivating album.
Despite its odd-couple billing, Venetian Snares x Daniel Lanois is surprisingly unsurprising. It sounds, almost comically, exactly like you’d expect: Lanois lays down thick, reverb-heavy choirs of pedal steel while Funk spurts, skitters, chirps, and stomps all over them, occasionally catching and gutting Lanois’s guitar before throwing it back. That’s all there is to it, and if this bizarre approach doesn’t appeal to you after the first minute, nothing on the remaining 32 will change your mind.
Funk and Lanois are like oil and vinegar. They don’t, and perhaps can’t, truly blend, but they never clash, and on this record’s best moments, they manage to complement each other in surprising and satisfying ways. It’s not clear until you listen (or watch) a few times, but Lanois and Funk are really responding to each other, and just when Venetian Snares x Daniel Lanois starts sounding pleasantly puzzling but pointless, Funk and Lanois stumble into beauty and grace. The way that Lanois’s guitar sounds like the sun coming out between 2:00 and 2:16 on “United P92”, the spiritual levity that Lanois lends Funk’s percussive barrage in the opening seconds of “Mothors Pressroll P131”, and the ghostly processing Funk gives Lanois’s pedal steel halfway into “HpShk5050 P127” are just a few of the many instances when Venetian Snares x Daniel Lanois justifies itself. The tension between Lanois’s warmth and Funk’s mania never resolves, but it does result in many fascinating and affecting moments.
Venetian Snares x Daniel Lanois is simultaneously boring and thrilling, repetitive and protean, pointless and innovative, meditative and disruptive, coldly mechanical and achingly soulful. Those dualities don’t always map onto their performers as neatly as you’d expect, and in fact, (appropriately for an album recorded in a former Buddhist temple) Venetian Snares x Daniel Lanois is so strange that it renders those dualities meaningless. Some of it sounds great, some it sounds pointless, and I’m not always sure which is which.
