Shouting For Joy

After the first time that it had shouted, it was then just a matter of pre-focussing and waiting for the moment.

Chickens not only have a wide variety of feather colours, they actually have a lot of diversity in skin colour too! Their skin can be yellow, white, or black in a range of tones.
Western commercial markets will almost exclusively farm white skinned birds because that’s what folks here are accustomed to seeing and now expect of a ‘clean, healthy chicken carcass’. Black skinned birds are valued in many Asian markets.
Yellow is fascinating because it doesn’t occur naturally in the chicken’s wild ancestor the red junglefowl, but it is present in the wild grey junglefowl and heavily implies their hybridization in early chicken domestication.
Skin colour also doesn’t necessarily reflect the leg colour, a white skin bird can have slate coloured feet but i don’t believe black skin birds can have anything other than black feet (idk the genetics that well but i have never seen it). keep in mind the carcasses in these photos are all paler than they would be in life because they have been exsanguinated.

Been playing with iNaturalist's Seek to ID some of the wildflowers and whatnot around the yard that I don't know the actual name for. It's a cute app and all but goddamn does it make you take some of the SHITTIEST fucking photos for an ID. Then it's like "hey do you want to upload your worst photo in the world to iNaturalist?!" like.. no?? Half the time I can't even ID the stuff from photos it makes me take when I know what I'm taking a photo of.
Also yep this sure is a red junglefowl..
#Also it's wrong about the ID.. A Lot.#Citizen science is great and all but the push for content is kinda fucking itself over#Idk I have mixed opinions of it all#text

[Image description: a photo of a Red Junglefowl rooster strutting on a dirt path. He has very handsome colors, mainly gold, red, black, and deep green. /End description]
the default way for things to taste is good. we know this because "tasty" means something tastes good. conversely, from the words "smelly" and "noisy" we can conclude that the default way for things to smell and sound is bad. interestingly there are no corresponding adjectives for the senses of sight and touch. the inescapable conclusion is that the most ordinary object possible is invisible and intangible, produces a hideous cacophony, smells terrible, but tastes delicious. and yet this description matches no object or phenomenon known to science or human experience. so what the fuck

Animal of the Day!
Red Junglefowl (Gallus gallus)
Conservation Status- Unlisted
Habitat- Domesticated
Size (Weight/Length)- 2 kg
Diet- Grains; Insects
Cool Facts- The red junglefowl may look like a common domestic chicken however these babies were the start of it all, being the ancestor to many domestic chicken breeds. Being a non-domesticated chicken species, the red junglefowl is rarely used in egg or meat production. The males are known for their striking plumage that attract females for mating. Using their crow only for mating instead of signifying sunup, red junglefowl can be heard for kilometers. Males also sport a spur on their inner foot, allowing them to attack predators and competitors. Sadly, red junglefowl are used in cock fighting due to this spur and their aggressive nature.
Rating- 11/10 (Make cock fighting illegal worldwide.)
Animtober- Fowl (Bok bok bok bok bok…)

Swan and sea-otter: Amphibious but kinda clumsy on land. People would had only seen photos of them would go "oh how cute/majestic" while people who actually knew things about them would just want to leave.
Raven (scaled up) and goat: This thing looks cool but also they're considered a nuisance animal because they keep committing bank heists.
Chicken and housecat: These are quite nice actually, great family pets. Their wild ancestors, a mix of red junglefowl and wildcats, on the other hand are like a mincing machine with the bravado of a prizefighter and the brains of a turnip. You will lose skin if you startle one.
Emu and horse: No. This animal weighs half a ton and has two separate but complimentary panic disorders.
It annoys me unreasonably when you want to ask people "what bird and what mammal would make the worst gryphon" as a fun thought exercise, and people with no joy and no imagination always interpret it as "a gryphon that sucks, is physically impossible, and would hate being alive", and - being predictable and lacking in imagination - always, always answer with "a hummingbird and a blue whale lol".
Like come on. Why do you have to suck the fun out of everything. Why not use a fraction of imagination and delightful whimsy. Imagine the combination of a mouse and a sparrow. That creature would be merciless, burtal, absolutely determined to get into your trash and has the power of both wings and hands to do its will. Or a crow and a cat - that thing is smart enough to fuck with people and not afraid to do it. Imagine the ungodly shriek of the noble fox-seagull, also determined to get into your trash.
A gryphon that is a combination of a kangaroo and a cassowary. The only proof we have of a loving god is the fact that those things do not exist. If hell is real, it's full of them. That thing can't fly, but it will run you down, it will kill you, and you will look stupid the whole entire time you're dying.
Why would the first thing that pops into your mind at the words "the worst gryphon" automatically be "a gryphon that hates being alive". Can you not picture a gryphon that fucking loves being alive, and has both the power and the will to make it everyone else's problem.

Gallus gallus Red Junglefowl
Why did the chicken cro—nevermind, the joke’s overused.
But to me, it shows that chickens have been a big part of our life.
In fact, as I’m writing this, there’s a viral study stating that chicken bones in the landfills will be our legacy in the fossil record. There are about 21 billion chickens living today, about three for each person. We slaughter 60 billion of them yearly, more than half the number of all humans that have ever lived.
I too, have raised and eaten many of them in my life. I spent hundreds of hours playing Harvest Moon in the 90s, fooling around with the hens. I started studying animal anatomy by staring at chicken photos on the internet.
It’s impossible to ignore their contribution to our history—beyond MY history.
The Chinese Zodiac features a rooster in their roster. The Europeans feared the mythical cockatrice. Pope Gregory I picked the rooster as an emblem for Christianity.
They have fed countless people from the Ancient Romans to minimum wage millennials in the form of cheap nuggets.
And what do they get in return? They don’t get the glory of dogs or war horses. The word “chicken” refers to a coward, and people say feathered dinosaurs are no longer scary now that they look like chickens. I bet those people have never seen how brutal cockfights are.
To me, domestic chickens reflect our ever-evolving relationship with nature and what we value in it. Wherever humans went, we took chickens with us and bred them to fit our many desires.
Today, a big chunk of the world breeds broilers for their eggs and flesh. But the all-black Cemani of Java is bred for their mystical appearance. In Japan, the Onagadori is considered a National Natural Treasure, thanks to it’s long, trailing phoenix-like tail.
As the final entry in this series, the chicken sums up why I did this project in the first place.
We take the birds for granted. But if we trace back from their beginning as the wild Red Junglefowl in Asia, we start to unravel countless stories.
These stories not only tell how creatures live and evolve, but also how their history is intertwined with ours.
These stories, in the end, are also about us.

Sri Lankan junglefowl (Gallus lafayettii)
The Sri Lankan junglefowl is a member of the Galliformes bird order which is endemic to Sri Lanka, where it is the national bird. It is closely related to the red junglefowl (G. gallus), the wild junglefowl from which the chicken was domesticated. As with other junglefowl, the Sri Lankan junglefowl is strongly sexually dimorphic: the male is much larger than the female, with more vivid plumage and a highly exaggerated wattle and comb. As with other jungle fowls, Sri Lankan jungle fowls are priliminary aTerrestrial animal. It spends most of its time foraging for food by scratching the ground for various seeds, fallen fruit and insects. It is common in forests and scrub habitats, and is commonly spotted at sites such as Kitulgala, Yala and Sinharaja.
