Replacing my bag strap
Unlike many of my clothes and accessories this bag isn't thrifted. It's a bag by Jawbreaker that I absolutely love the look of, it has multiple pockets, tons of space inside, and is clearly great quality as I've had it for over 10 years and it's almost good as new. It's the only handbag I own, and I've no desire to get a new one.
However the one bit I've had to replace multiple times is the shoulder strap, since that's the bit that gets most wear and tear.
It originally had the kind of strap which clips on, but the problem with those is that after years of metal rubbing against metal, eventually it wears away to the point where the clip is thin enough that it snaps. Last couple of times I just put a new clip on, however this time not only were the clips worn away but so were the d-rings you're supposed to attach them to, so I did a more thorough job.
First of all I unpicked the stitching attaching the d-rings to the bag and replaced them with these large rectangular ones. I always save metal hardware from clothing items I mod or that are finally old and worn enough to be thrown away, and I think these came from a skirt. Happily I had two the same, so I used bits of the old strap which weren't too badly worn to make loops to sew them on.
I sewed them by hand with thick top-stitch thread doubled over, and I even did those criss-cross stitching lines to make them extra secure.
I then went to a nearby charity shop hoping to find a cheap bag I could steal the strap from, but even better, I came across this belt, the construction of which was extremely similar to the detailing already on the bag. It was £1, way cheaper than a replacement strap from ebay, which I have also bought in the past.
I didn’t want to cut the buckle off because the belt fabric would fray, so I unpicked the stitching around the buckle instead, and put the buckle away in my crafting box to hopefully reuse in the future - like I said, I save everything.
I wanted the eyelets on the belt to be visible as they match the rest of the eyelets on the bag, so I put the belt through the rectangle and folded it over as far as I could while still showing all the eyelets, then sewed it shut. Again, I did multiple rows of stitching to keep it secure, and I also oversewed down both sides.
I don't have a sliding buckle that would enable me to adjust the strap length, but I never adjust my bag strap anyway, so I just put the strap over my shoulder, adjusted it to a length that I liked, and sewed that end together too. This was a long belt so I ended up doubling it over quite far, but that's good as it will make this section of the new strap extra thick, so hopefully it's extra strong.
And there we go, it looks as if I bought it like this!

Hello, those colourful sketchbook drawings you posted are so vibrant and beautiful! I was wondering if you have any favourite crayon/pencils to use for sketching?
Also wanted to say that your art in general is very inspiring. I love how fluid it is.
Hello! Thank you for your kind comment. I'm always touched if someone feels inspired!
Those were done with Caran d'ache Neocolor II, and the gold (which just looks plain yellow in the photo oops) is a marubu crayon. I really like them because they're not crumbly like oil pastels, but look similar. I want to use them more often but I suffer from "I struggle to justify using my nice art supplies" syndrome
I can't think of any specific stand out favorites, but lately the things that I grab for often are: - random ballpoint pens - gel pen or felt pen - fountain pens (not pictured because they're in my work bag) - kaweco clutch pencil (which I named "bananecil") - blackwing matte pencil - pentel brush pen EF - zig clearcolor brush pens - misc colored pencils or markers for some pops of color - I was gifted these random clearance zebra metallic brush markers that kind of suck but I also kind of like them? Complicated relationship
Here's the stuff in my bedside pencil bag
I want to try one of those multi-colored lead pencils someday soon
#asks#text#faq#i think most of these supplies were used in the last sketchbook dump i just posted#the pencil bag in question is actually just a recycled plastic sushi tray

Hey. If you have clothes or sheets or other textiles that are still usable? PLEASE don't throw them in the trash. PLEASE don't put them in the recycling bin (they'll just become trash).
Find somewhere to donate them. A lot of donation sites will take torn clothing, because it can be downcycled or cut up for the fabric that's still good.

Quilted tote bag made from thrifted sweatshirt and scraps
Made a tote bag out of a thrifted sweatshirt and scraps from a dress that I made two years ago. I bought the fabric and finished 90% of it last year, then waited 11 months to finish it. It was supposed to be for my friend's birthday last year, so now it's just in time for her next one.

The culture clash between the rural can-crusher and the urban can-returner
#i read a thread yesterday of people speculating about someone complaining about their huge recycling bin being too small#a theory mentioned multiple times was that they were a soda addict who isn't crushing their cans#you often have to physically stop someone from a non-refund region from crushing their cans by reflex and sometimes even other people's#like THOSE ARE TEN CENTS EACH BRUH#the can return machines won't accept crushed cans because they have to scan the barcodes#a fun fact about me is that i hate returning cans and usually won't do it until the bag is overflowing and becoming a problem#i once procrastinated so long that the province had doubled the can refund from 5 to 10 cents and i doubled my money#this is what's called reinforcing bad behaviour and it did not help me bring cans back any more promptly

Once upon a time, when I was only about ten, my parents bought me a little waterproof backpack for our family hiking days. I used it for a while, then it ended up in my closet being used to store random things, and then many years later I needed a backpack and pulled it out and started carrying it again. I kept carrying it until the zips broke and the lining debonded and the waterproof fabric tore, and at that point it was about thirty years old and officially very dead.
But I happened to need a new wash bag. So I cut that faithful old backpack up into the biggest pieces of waterproof outer and lining I could salvage, pulled the last working zip from one of the pockets, added a carabiner clip from one of those reusable water pouches that had also died on me and a D-ring that I literally found in the street on my way to the corner shop one evening... and I've been using this for about three years now and it works great.
(Plus it makes me smile knowing that my old backpack that went on so many adventures with me isn't just disintegrating in a landfill somewhere. There are no downsides to upcycling! ^_^)
