Hi! My employer's workplace wellness program was recently revamped, and I'm trying to assess whether it's slid into the nonsense side of wellness-world. Specifically, there's a webinar being offered by a guy named Abra Pappa on using an "anti-inflammatory diet" to "battle against chronic diseases⌠including heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, and even certain cancers." This sounds⌠sketchy to me, but I know you have both expertise in nutrition and a strong bullshit detector, so wanted to ask what you make of it.
Okay long story short never trust anyone who got their degree from a university that started off as a school for chiropractors.
Abra Pappa got her MS in Functional Medicine and Human Nutrition after getting a BA in Theater; I checked the requirements for that degree and the school's whole catalogue is throwing red flags but what's throwing the most red flags for me is that if I wanted to get a degree in nutrition from an ACEND accredited program I'd need to take a hell of a lot more than one bio class, one anatomy OR one physiology class, one medical terminology class, one nutrition class, and one biochemistry class in order to get into a master's program.
It's funny because she went from a BA in theater arts to an MS in Functional Nutrition and Human Nutrition and I've been trying to go from a BA in Theater Arts to an MS in nutrition and *aside* from the whole private school costs thing one of the major barriers is that I'd basically need to re-do all of my undergrad to get in a lot of chemistry, some calculus, and MANY nutrition classes before I qualified for a Master's program. But based on the program she took I'm only one medical terminology and one biochemistry class away from a Master's program instead of more like ten to fifteen classes (primarily in nutrition, chemistry, and physiology) away.
Anyway she says she's a Licensed Dietician Nutritionist. There are some states that allow LDN certification, New York is one of those states. *BUT* to be an LDN in New York you have to
Complete a program in dietetics-nutrition that culminates in a bachelorâs degree that qualifies for certification in dietetics-nutrition or has been accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education (CADE).[Note: CADE is now ACEND] The program must include at least 45 semester hours of coursework in dietetics/nutrition and must include at least 20 semester hours of coursework in the area of human biological sciences and social and behavioral sciences
Pappa went to the University of Western States in Oregon, and the only ACEND accredited school in Oregon is at OSU, so if she's an LDN it's from someplace that isn't New York, where she lives and works.
She also claims to be a CNS, a Certified Nutrition Specialist, but in order to qualify for THAT you need to have an MS with some pretty rigorous coursework
And this is what the school required for her MS program:
And given that she didn't have a science degree for undergrad it seems pretty likely that she wasn't doing anything close to what an undergrad nutrition program looks like:
For the record, here are the MS requirements for an MS in nutrition with a health and wellness emphasis at that same school:
In order to get accepted to the MS in nutrition program in that school you either need to have a BS in nutrition or a BS in biology or chemistry and take all the undergrad level nutrition requirements ON TOP OF that BS.
I don't think that a theater degree and an MS from a woo-y correspondence school really count, even if you do pay $45k for your diploma.
If you go look at the requirements for any ACEND accredited school and compare them to the MS program from University of Western States it leaves UWS looking pretty shitty in comparison. Like, nowhere in her requirements is there a statistics class! Stats is required even for an associate transfer certificate in nutrition! EVEN AT THE 2-YEAR LEVEL FOR REAL NUTRITION DEGREES YOU HAVE TO DO STATS AND SHE DIDN'T HAVE TO TAKE A SINGLE STATS CLASS FOR HER MS. You will note that the cal poly MS program has one entire MS-Level class on vitamin metabolism and one entire MS-Level class on mineral metabolism for any of the three MS in Nutrition emphasis courses; her school required neither.
This shit makes me want to climb the walls.
I'm just going to start calling myself a nutritionist. California will let anyone call themselves a nutritionist, there are absolutely zero protections on that term and I can get myself a piece of paper for like three hundred dollars from a diploma mill that has some kind of bullshit accreditation.
Here are the programmatic accreditations her school has:
Compare with the Cal Poly programmatic accreditations (I cite cal poly a bunch because it was the program I was hoping to get into eventually so I researched it the most; that's where I got my BA, go broncos):
Note that the website for her school is listed with the department of education as wschiro.com because it was called Western States Chiropractic College until 2010.
Every time i dig into something like this it makes me want to stare into space for hours. No wonder college students are getting fucked on their loans and going to bullshit schools. No wonder everything is a scam these days. People bitch about credentialism but you know what maybe this lady is a CNS; sure, for some people that requires passing board certification tests, getting 1000 hours of clinical supervision, and becoming a Nurse Practitioner with real actual nutrition study from a solid program, but for other people it requires zero understanding of statistics, a theater degree, and three *whole* units of anatomy. Maybe she clears the bar on that one! She doesn't have the qualifications for an LDN in New York, she's not an RDN because she sure as fuck didn't take the classes required for a *VERY SERIOUSLY* protected title, but maybe you can be a CNS with an online diploma from the western states chiropractic college.
I fucking hate everything.
You know the whole reason I wanted to get a degree in nutrition was to yell about shit like this online, but fuck it. Fuck it, I'm a nutrition-isht because i live in california and I can say I am and who's going to check? Who's going to look up whether I took classes in public health or anatomy or the metabolism of micronutrients before they hire me to do corporate seminars on healing your relationship to food? I am legally allowed to do that so I might as well, right? If all I have to do is be charismatic and convincing I'm pretty sure I've got that down, actually, so who's going to check?
Nobody! Nobody is going to check and everything is a scam and I hate everything.
ANYWAY
The relationship between nutrition and inflammation and the relationship between chronic disease and inflammation are two different, complicated things that are difficult to point at and say definitively what the connections are.
I am of the opinion that any time you're getting deep into things like an anti-inflammatory, ketogenic, or PH-Balancing diet without a specific condition that calls for the avoidance of certain foods for very clearly scientifically reported reasons, you're dealing with a woo-woo biohacker who's looking to sell a diet plan.
The thing about nutrition science is that it seems like for most people the "answers" are pretty basic: eat enough food, get enough macro and micronutrients, eat a variety of food, avoid processed meats, try to eat more fruits and vegetables, get enough water, and stay as active as possible NOT for weight loss reasons but for metabolic health and joint/muscle maintenance. It's really, really, hard to sell that though, which is how you get people like Abra Pappa in 2013 writing out this bugfuck "Food and mood" handout with a midday snack that is so bonkers in the way the calories are distributed that I'm sitting down and doing math about it (it looks like about a third of the calories that day are supposed to come from the mid afternoon spinach, mint, cocoa nib, and coconut milk smoothie which is, as I said, bugfuck nuts).
It's hard to sell "please eat more fruits and vegetables, which is difficult because actually most places don't grow enough vegetables for the population's nutrition needs and it's cheaper to eat grains and industrially produced meat than it is to eat five cups of vegetables that you need to prepare daily and also maybe skip the bacon" but it's much easier to sell "five anti-inflammatory superfood milkshakes that will fill your belly and fight cancer" because it's packaging nutrition as a product and not as a massive systemic issue that happens to have very specific requirements for a large number of individuals who *do* happen to have disorders that are based on nutrition and inflammation (celiac disease! I've got one of them! Eating the wrong foods definitely causes inflammation in my body as the result of an autoimmune disorder! but that doesn't mean that the things that are inflammatory for me are inflammatory for everyone!)
Anyway I think like about 97% of workplace wellness programs are largely bullshit based, or at least import bullshit a lot of the time, and nutrition is a science that has, just, so much bullshit in and around it.
So I would take anything they say with a grain of salt, and hopefully less than 255% of your RDV of saturated fat (seriously that meal plan is ludicrous).
Side note: there is a subset of nutrition people who looked at the way that we got fat wrong in the 80s and flipped it and reversed it and went "actually you can have as much fat of any kind that you want as long as it is natural and you will have no issues" and this is how you end up with people on 100% natural clean keto diets who have cholesterol levels over 600. Abra Pappa recommends "clean/natural" eating and has taken continuing education on keto and has a recipe for a single-serving smoothie that calls for 8oz of coconut milk I think she's very much in the "'good' fat truther" camp (or at least she was in 2013 which is maybe why New York has a requirement for people to have some kind of nutrition certification for giving out nutrition advice and maybe she should have done that because she didn't even go to her bullshit "grad school" until 2017).
(We DID get fat wrong in the 80s and total avoidance of all fats is bad for you and there are 'good' fats that you should eat and everybody needs to eat some level of fat for proper nutrient absorption but even if you're only getting fat from nuts and avocados that's not going to prevent your arteries from forming plaques if you're having nearly triple the recommended daily value of saturated fat as part of your afternoon snack)

i sit listening to my weekly webinar. my mic is muted and my camera is off, but there's still an hour left. i can't miss any of this information. i'm going to be tested on it, so i dilligently record it in my notes. i feel my stomach shift downwards again and squirm in my chair. i was supposed to go to the bathroom before i started my webinar, a rule i made after almost wetting myself in regular underwear in my desk chair a few weeks earlier, but i got caught up in making lunch and completely forgot. an empty mug that used to have coffee in it sits beside my desktop, just next to a plate with a banana peel and a few crumbs from an earlier avocado toast and a nearly empty water bottle. i am always trying to ward off the severe constipation i get. it's what damaged my nerves and got me here in the first place- but sometimes...
i feel muscles in my abdomen contract, but despite my best efforts to squeeze my ass shut, i tighten in all the wrong places. my load starts making its way out of me, held in only by my chair. i swallow and do my best to focus on the webinar and my note-taking, all the while trying to suck the log back in and fighting my body's urge to let loose and feel it coiling softly and slowly into my waiting padding. i listen to the low bassy notes of the presenter's voice, instead of the faint, earthy smell starting to fill the air, and the pain as my body tries to find room to push everything out of me. i'm not going to make it. i didn't make it. when the reality of my accident sets in, i lift my ass a few inches off my chair in defeat. without me pressing my asshole against the chair as hard as i can to keep everything in, i immediately heavily fill my diaper with thick, dense, slightly soft shit, feeling nothing but my sticky mess finding places to rest against my skin and touching the outermost ring of my ass on its way out, and the pumping sensation of my muscles as my body pushes against my will, unable to feel much else. it feels like it goes on for ages, but at the same time, it all happens so quickly that i barely have time to contemplate the fact that i'm pooping my pants, while technically at work, again. the load is huge, i can see it in the office mirror, its made itself apparent despite my thin medical diapers and thick sweats. i spend the rest of the hour sitting leaning on my side, so i don't have to sit directly in my shame.

Lil Kalish at HuffPost:
The first-ever mobilization of trans voters around a presidential candidate took place on Zoom on Tuesday, as around 1,000 transgender people, including lawmakers, advocates, health care workers and celebrities, logged on to show support for Vice President Kamala Harrisâ bid for the presidency. Trans Folks For Harris was one of numerous identity-based webinars to support Harris after President Joe Biden dropped out of the race last month. Over the last few weeks, many LGBTQ+ advocates have embraced Harris, touting her decadeslong record of supporting LGBTQ+ rights, and her decision to make Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, who transformed the state into a âtrans refuge,â her running mate. This came just after Advocates for Trans Equality released a report showing that 75% of eligible trans voters turned up to the polls in the 2020 presidential election, compared to 67% of the general U.S. population â and that trans voters make up a crucial part of the electorate.
âWe know our rights and our progress are on the line, but so is our very sense of belonging,â said Delaware state Sen. Sarah McBride, who was elected as the first openly transgender state senator in the country. If McBride wins her bid for Delawareâs open House seat, she would become the first transgender member of Congress. âWe have the opportunity, but more importantly, the responsibility in this election to show a trans young person who fears that the heart of this country is not big enough to love them too, that no matter what extremists say or do, our next president and vice president continue to have their backs,â McBride continued. The Harris-Walz campaign has yet to release any concrete policy plans on civil rights ahead of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago next week, but advocates say Harris and Walz have demonstrated their commitment to supporting LGBTQ+ rights, access to abortion and the rights to bodily autonomy overall. A draft of the Democratsâ platform, which was released in July, outlines their fight to restore reproductive rights, address racial inequalities, and protect democracy.
âItâs a step forward to ensure that trans people, especially Black and Brown trans women, have the representation and the resources they need to live with dignity and pride,â Zahara Bassett, CEO of Chicago trans advocacy organization Life Is Work, said on the call. âWe need to make sure that our future is one of equity, justice and liberation for us all.â Harris was one of the first elected officials to publicly back marriage equality in 2004, and she refused to defend Proposition 8, Californiaâs same-sex marriage ban, in 2008. As a prosecutor, she also led the charge to end the so-called gay and transgender âpanic defense,â a legal strategy often used to seek a lesser offense for perpetrators of anti-LGBTQ+ violence or murder by claiming that the victim made same-sex sexual advances. In June 2023, Harris became the first sitting vice president to visit the Stonewall Inn, the birthplace of the modern gay rights movement, and the site of the historic 1969 uprising of LGBTQ+ people fighting back against police raids in the New York City bar. And earlier this week, Harris released a video on X outlining how former President Donald Trump vastly restricted LGBTQ+ rights while in office â and how he would do so again if elected. Trump has already promised to roll back several policies, including blocking access to gender-affirming care for minors and rescinding the Biden administrationâs Title IX rules that expand protections for transgender students. Trumpâs running mate, Ohio Sen. JD Vance, introduced a bill in the upper chamber to criminalize gender-affirming care for trans youth.
[...] Todayâs embrace of Harris is in stark contrast to how some LGBTQ+ voters remembered her last bid for president in 2019. Back then, some advocates took issue with Harrisâ tenure as a prosecutor for how she pushed for criminal penalties for parents of truant children and which led to the arrest of many Black and brown people. Many also noted how as attorney general, Harrisâ office denied an incarcerated trans womanâs request for gender-affirming care. Harris has since apologized and said she takes âfull responsibilityâ for her officeâs actions. But still, not all LGBTQ+ voters are convinced. Harrisâ support for the Biden administrationâs policies towards Israelâs war in Gaza has alienated some of these voters. In the Democratic primaries this year, hundreds of thousands of voters cast âuncommittedâ ballots as a form of protest to push for a cease-fire and end U.S. weapons transfers to Israel.
For the first time in American Presidential history, an organized mobilization effort for trans Americans to support Kamala Harrisâs Presidency bid has cropped up, featuring a Trans Folks For Harris Zoom call. đłď¸ââ§ď¸

hereâs my day so far to prove to yâall that my whole life is in fact NOT pinterest coded
woke up late in the morning. sat staring at a wall. ate breakfast and then procrastinated doing work.
put off having a nap because it just makes POTS worse. missed my school webinars. ate lunch and then just watched youtube trying not to fall asleep.
eventually went to bed, for like 40 minutes and then woke up feeling horrible. went into shower, took ten minutes to get clothes on and now sitting on my couch writing this at 3:43pm.

An update for the Ask An Expert: Dog Trainer (@molosseraptor) webinar:
I'd like to thank Allie for the excellent presentation! She did such a good job balancing the content to appeal to both dog sport people and pet owners. I recognized so many concepts from FDSA courses but Allie explained everything so clearly and in such an interesting manner.Â
Thank you to everyone who submitted/asked training questions. Without you, the discussion wouldn't have been as fun. I thought Allie's response to a question from an owner of a Border Collie used to herd cattle to be particularly insightful.Â
I'll be sending out an email later this week to everyone who signed up for the webinar. The message will include a link to a recording of the session on YouTube, a list of resources mentioned in the session, and a text transcript. The video will have indexing/chapter marks to each question so that you can navigate directly to the question(s) of interest. I think making the information easier to access is important but it will take me a few days to put it all together.Â

You seem to like synth music, have you heard Blinding Lights by the Weeknd? Its a current-ish song that sounds straight out of 80s but somehow still modern
I do like synth music a lot!
I haven't listening to anything by The Weeknd yet because after what he pulled with that whole "The idol" tv show he puts a very bad taste in my mouth as a person.
I did check out the song itself. I do admit it IS pretty good. His voice is a bit too "modern pop" for the really good music backing it which I'm not super fond of, but it's pretty good! I do think I prefer bands like The Midnight and GUNSHIP tho.
There's an entire channel btw, if people are unaware, called "RetroNewWave" that only features synthwave (and its various offshoot genres) music by indie artists.
I've been listening to a lot of Mallsoft music lately, as well as what technically counts as Vaporwave but I'm extremely picky with Vaporwave because a lot of it doesn't appeal to me. I think I like Sovietwave but I haven't listened to enough of it to form an opinion on the genre as a whole outside of the songs I've listened to and REALLY like. (I'm a sucker for music that incorporates recordings of spaceflight chatter, both English and Russian).
This one is my favourite (despite not having spaceflight chatter in it)
youtube
I've been big into the album "WEBINAR" by Dreamcorp but I'm not sure what subgenre it fits into.
youtube
I just wish there was more Seapunk out there T__T I like Seapunk a lot but there only exists like 4 or 5 songs of it out there I like. A few of the VERY small selection of songs that exist I don't like that much, but the ones I DO like I'm obsessed with. "Realm of the Dolphin Overlord" is basically my entire personality on some days
youtube
I love this song so fucking much.
......wow I'm really turning into one of those" niche music snobs" aren't I?

Eding Mvilongo has 12 years of experience as an anesthesiologist and for over 10 of those years, she had no Black colleagues.
Her situation is reflected in a new report being submitted to the United Nations on anti-Black racism in Quebec.
The report is part of Canada's universal periodic review which assesses a country's human rights record.
The findings could put Canada's human rights record at risk.
Mvilongo works at hospitals and clinics in Laval and says when it comes to management, there are even fewer Black people and that under-representation can lead to mistrust in the health-care system.
"You can take all the training you want in classes and in webinars, but if you haven't lived through these realities, you have no way of knowing," she said. [...]

Open For Registration: What To Do If You F%#! Up webinar
It is a truth universally acknowledged that a writer of fiction will, in the course of their career, f%#! screw up. Authors worry that screwing up could negatively impact their career for years, or even forever. For some, that fear is paralyzing, keeping them from engaging in community or with their readers or with learning opportunities.
A truth not universally acknowledged is that authors can recover from a screw up, even a highly public one*. In this webinar, authors Nisi Shawl and @ktempestbradford will break down what authors should not do and advise on what they should do, instead.
When: March 3, 2024, 11AM â 2PM Pacific Join us live or get the recording after! Price: $40 - $50 or Whatever You Can Afford
Click here for Details and Registration
*Assuming your screw up wasn't malicious. Like, say, making fake Goodreads accounts to 1 star authors you're pre-emptively jealous of and then pretending it was a "friend" who did it and then making a eyeroll-worthy nonpology....
