do you make your bed? yes it’s the first thing I do every morning as soon as I get up

what is your job? running my mouth about very powerful computers to very important people

if you could go back to school would you? yes, probably either for art (ba), spanish (ba), computer engineering (masters), sociology/lgbt history (phd) or business (masters) - honestly if there was a job where you could make bank by going to school your entire life that’s what I would want to do

can you parallel park? yes, pretty well, I wish I was more confident at doing it in super tight spaces

a job you had that would surprise people? I kind of don’t think me having had any job would surprise people. for online friends maybe either pizza delivery driver or recruiter. for irl people it’s usually that my degree & first-ish job were in animation… gets them every time

do you think aliens are real? I think there must be some kind of life outside our solar system, I don’t know if it’s something that humans would describe or understand as intelligent life

can you drive a manual car? no but I could probably figure it out in a pinch

what’s your guilty pleasure? if I enjoy it it’s not guilty… maybe fast food french fries

tattoos? not yet but just because I couldn’t think of anything that had enough personal significance that I felt like I could pull the trigger and get it imprinted on my skin forever. I do finally have something I decided on a year or so ago that I think I’ll get eventually (upper arm/shoulder tattoo of a mourning dove with Texas cedar (juniperus ashei/mexicana) + excerpt from isaiah 11:9). if I like that after getting it, which I have a feeling I will, I’m also reeeally partial to fma scar’s tattoos 👀

favourite color? forest green, all shades of yellow, and gray

favourite type of music? I can’t answer this my taste is too scattered. symphonic metal, 90s rap, new alternative, soundtracks, english covers of anime ops and vocaloid songs ripped directly from youtube, half of taylor swift’s discography but not the other half, etc

do you like puzzles? I love them, my family is always doing puzzles for fun. big fan of recreational puzzles and games.

any phobias? no phobias. pretty strong fear of falling (not heights - the feeling of falling). don’t like to watch large needles or drains being pushed under or removed from skin

favourite childhood sport? was mostly homeschooled and didn’t play a lot of formal sports but probably soccer

do you talk to yourself? yes, it’s funny because I don’t have much of an internal narrative but I have little conversations aloud with myself ALL the time when I’m alone - hyping myself up, discussing things I’m undecided about, talking about whatever I’m doing at the moment, arguing with myself, creating the next great fandom meta, etc.

what movie(s) do you adore? prince of egypt, mad max: fury road, wolfwalkers (+ the rest of the irish folklore trilogy), when marnie was there, lilo and stitch

L.A Hallucinations - Carly Rae Jepsen: I was busy being annoyed that I'm not going to be in town for CRJ rooftop concert that's happening this summer, decided to relisten to Emotion. Got into this song, which I couldn't have named before last week. Probably helps that I recently finished writing a bit of a fic that involved two idiots in LA.

Light On - Maggie Rogers: an older favorite, just fell into a mood of looping it.

About Damn Time - Lizzo: i've never really gotten into any of her other songs, but this is a bop.

Never To Return - Pyre OST: very much made every liberation rite in Pyre feel as epic as it was in universe, with all the hope and dread that entailed

bottom line - Lilli Furfaro: all of her mighty nein songs are fantastic, but of course I have a soft spot for beau's. that you can hear the pattern of her pop-pop punches in it, the way it so well represents beau's pov of short sudden thoughts revealing skilled observation, and trying to wrangle her instincts into purpose

Helplessly Hoping - Crosby, Stills & Nash: looped it for TLOU reasons, got into it

Stray Italian Greyhound - Vienna Teng: I know, I know, but Ted Lasso ending made me rewatch that one Rebecca vid and so, the song about the charmed cynic once more wins again.

Ultralife - Oh Wonder: another one from a vid I saw once, and the "blood running in my veins / i've never been here before" moments are particularly good for a lot of fannish feelings

Repeat After Me - Kongos: the rhythm of this crawled into my spine and stayed there

Silver Springs - Fleetwood Mac: is it because of that concert video I saw for the first time recently. yes, but it is also a good song.

Mmm... no, I don't think I've ever gotten Fool vibes from Fulton. He's not nearly innocent enough. If tarot cards are a journey, he always feels at least halfway through, if not further.

It's actually a little hard to choose a Fool because of the cyclical nature of the play. But if I had to choose from the actual characters... maybe Banquo? A haunted Fool, perhaps, but a character that I guess I've always associated with a "beginning" just because he never makes it much further than that. There are other places to put Banquo, too, though.

I could definitely see the audience as Fool, though! Maybe the audience crossing the threshold into the hotel... That moment as you go up the stairs (or elevator, in my case) into the Manderley... or the moment that you go through that curtain... The discussion with James in the elevator... Fortune favors the bold, and no one is bolder than the Fool... It's a good idea!

As for Fulton... I lean away from Death a little bit now because I think I might give that title to our resident Taxidermist. (And that bone!!) The Magician seems like an easy card to assign him, for obvious reasons, but... vibe-wise, he's very Hierophantic. Old books and old words and graveyard dirt and Catholicism. He clings tight to those standardized pillars of strength and knowledge even as he pollutes them, and that's the source of his knowledge as opposed to the much freer and fiercer magic that you see in Bargarran or Hecate and her witches.

5.What work of yours got more feedback than you expected?

My Bandom Summer Blowout story, But the Past Ain't Through With You. I didn't expect it to get much attention because it's a tiny addition to a huge fandom, but it got one or two recommendations which generated a continuing stream of interest. I'm very pleased by that.

10. What work was the quickest to write?

When was anything I write quick to do? I'm a very slow writer at all times, and my progress on The Rebuilding in particular has proceeded at a snail's pace. I think actually my current Yuletide assignment gets the prize - it's come together much faster than in previous years.

15. What WIP are you taking into next year with you?

The Rebuilding! I posted chapters 4 and 5 over the late summer/autumn, and have a lot of chapter 6 written: I am determined to see it finished. I also have an idea for next year's BSB so I will be writing that through the spring too.

20. Which work of yours have you reread the most?

Oddly, for this year, one of the stories I wrote for Yuletide in 2021, Bread and Circuses. It was a prompt for a very obscure book fandom, Tanith Lee's Biting the Sun, which I think I've mentioned before as one that's meant a lot to me all the way through my life. So I wrote a story set in Four BOO about Kallis and her circle and their lives there, and it's the thing I've gone back to most, partly because I'm pleased with how it turned out, and partly (I think) because it's nice to have more of the story, even if I wrote it myself.

25. Did you receive any gifts this year?

I did! First I had the companion art for But The Past... by the delightful @venomwolves.

Then for Yuletide I received three gift fics:

Remnant of Association by clachnaben (for Pat Cadigan’s The Girl-Thing Who Went Out For Sushi);

Senate Narrowly Approves Criminal Justice Reform Bill by JeannetteRankin (for Biting the Sun) - I actually wrote Bread and Circuses as a gift for this author, so we are clearly a fandom of two!

And an absolutely amazing interactive fiction based on Italo Calvino’s Invisible Cities: Masked Cities by reconditarmonia.

In the “more posts like this” panel under your reblog, reconditarmonia, were several posts from 2016 showing this is a rerun. Back then it was “leftists” refusing to vote for Hillary Clinton because she was insufficient for their desires, and they thought that allowing Trump to win would spur such a groundswell of leftist activism that it would course correct the US, shove the Overton window back to some magical more progressive time they’ve imagined and blah blah blah.

And now here we are with the exact same kind of people making the exact same argument that allowing Donald Trump to win will magically create leftist progress.

The same leftist progress that never materialized at all when he was allowed to win in 2016 — before a pandemic that killed a million Americans and disabled at least 10 million more, before a summer of mass social unrest, violence and deaths that netted no actionable progress at all, before we lost Roe and the lives and health of yet unknown numbers of pregnant people denied basic medical care, before January 6, and before the explosive growth of a fully fascist movement that is far more entrenched and far more angry and violent than they were eight years ago.

It’s almost as if there is a certain political mindset that strongly correlates to an absolute refusal to learn anything from their own lived experience, let alone recent history.

Okay okay 1) so glad to have peer reviewed tags and 2) @reconditarmonia asked me to elaborate in the notes about that last thing and I talk to much to keep it to the character limit so I’m putting it here.

So I am of the belief that Silas was speaking the absolute truth in that moment when he rejected Lyctorhood. Is it hypocritical that he would have that opinion while still exploiting Column in the way he does with siphoning? Yeah! Yeah! But it’s important that he Means It. It’s important that he dies trying to call his cavalier back to him. It’s important that he completely opts out of Harrows dream bubble. Part of the eighth house that we see reflected in Mercymorn and (in Johns recount) her nun is this moral conviction, this line in the sand that each person draws that they won’t cross and that they’ll raise hell for if anyone else crosses. M— does it with the reproductive justice line, her nun does it with her conviction in John, Colum does it with his honor as a cavalier! Silas wouldn’t go for Lyctorhood at all, not how it’s presented and not even if a perfect Lyctorhood was discovered after that because he’s already firm in his decision.

But! But. In a no-Cytherea au where there are no murders, everyone is collaborating more, and The Gang comes up with the concept of a perfect Lyctorhood (where everyone survives and shares power) before anyone can snap and kill their cavalier, I can see him maybe not having that line in the sand. But, after months of living in this new setting with Colum and seeing him put his foot down about things that Silas doesn’t understand—

I want Silas to ask. I want Colum to look at it and not want it and I want him to say no. That’s the evolution of his character and his relationship with Colum that I would like to see. The act of asking, and then, after, holding to Colum’s answer. Maybe Colum will see this and change his mind at some point. Maybe he’ll be able to trust this kid he’s helped raise as his necromancer again, with time and work. But it’s important that Silas asks and listens and shows Colum that respect and care. It shows a hell of a lot more character development and relationship evolution to have this than an offhand remark about Silas objecting to perfect Lyctorhood on moral grounds or of him just going along with the whole group. He and Colum deserve to realize their are cracks in their relationship and repair them. Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.
