When I act as a Game Master, I tend to start off by having everyone come to the virtual table and discuss what we want to play. There have been times when I had a campaign concept to begin with, but I find that I made it a practice to be very upfront in my description to set realistic expectations for the potential players. Other times, the players will ask for certain things and I will come up with a general idea for a campaign that meets their criteria. Examples of the latter were accomplishing a heist of sorts at late levels and designing campaigns around groups that all chose to play the same class (one for bards and one for monks).

After general talks of party composition and themes of the campaign, we start creating characters. This is basically where anyone who wants to roll stats can. My house rule is that players can choose between any set of rolls that are rolled, or either take the set from the PHB or use the point buying system. That way, all players have the option to be on equal footing in terms of stats. After stats, I offer aid to any newer players with questions and settle any questions on available options.

Once when everyone gets their character situated, I tend to do one-on-one messaging between each player. This is mainly so that I ensure that I truly understand the play style of the player and what they hope to achieve in character development. If they have any secrets that their character keeps from the others and how comfortable they are in having that tidbit naturally being hinted at over the course of the game.

Once all one-on-ones are completed and I sprinkle my selected character moments into my meal of a campaign, I preheat the oven to session one and we begin to cook.

one of the many things i love about buck and tommy's relationship is how honest they are with each other. they are both willing to communicate openly – if there is some misunderstanding between the two of them, they clear it up. they express what they feel, want, and need in a straightforward way, and neither has to push the other to admit what's going on: they'll do it without being asked. personally, i think it's absolutely beautiful, and i just couldn't be happier for buck. he finally met someone who values honesty just as much as he does, and you can see how good that is for him. because let's be real, have we ever seen him this content with his previous love interests? icl, not rooting for them is just crazy at this point in my book.
