First things first: Cuba’s economy. It’s no surprise to anyone that Cuba isn’t exactly experiencing its “Golden” age.

With wages low and opportunities even lower, for many theCuban dream no longer is a dream inside the country.

Cubans look north. They look south. East and west. Just about anywhere but Cuba for their dreams for a better future.

It’s something everyone here seems to have in common. Itunites the country in some bizarre melancholy way and everyone talks about it.It’s the social glue that bonds us all together.

And because of this, Cubans have tried various differentmethods to leave the island or make their situation on it much morecomfortable.

That’s where you come in.

2. Dating a Cuban 101: Jineteros

To the seemingly naïve foreigner,many don’t know what a “Jinetero” is. Though, in Cuban culture, ‘jinetero” is aterm we grow up with.

Jineteros or Jineteras in thesimpliest form are hustlers in any way but most known for being in the sex industry.Whether for a day, a week, or for an entire relationship.

Yes, I said it- an entirerelationship.

We have met some jineteros thatwill fake being in love to continue an ongoing relationship with a foreigner. It’sa sad truth, but it does happen. They will have their own families on theisland and when the foreigner comes, their partner vacates the home and therest of the family plays along. Theywork together for the week.

TITLE 1 - Safari

1. Reading pane - Pada di hujung ruangan URL safari terdapat icon reading pane. Jika anda tap icon yang simbolnya garisan yang berbentuk seperti perenggan tersebut, anda dapat lihat paparan standard untuk apa jua page yang anda baca di internet.

2. Bookmark - Taipkan pada ruangan URL safari alamat website yang ingin anda lawati dan tap butang "Go" pada keyboard anda. Bila page tersebut berjaya anda lawati, tap pada butang safari yang ada simbol anak panah dan tap pada bookmark. Last but not least, tap butang "Done" pada keyboard anda. Ianya akan secara automatik berada dalam senarai "Favorites" anda.

3. Multipage - Icon multipage yang mempunyai simbol dua kotak segi 4 bertindih pula akan memaparkan pelbagai page yang anda lawati. Jika anda mahu clear 100% paparan tersebut hanya perlu tap pada icon multipage dan swipe ke kiri. Jika 100% clear telah dilakukan, maka ianya akan memaparkan pelbagai bookmark "Favorites" anda. Anda hanya perlu tap pada mana-mana icon "Favorites" tersebut untuk lawati page tanpa perlu menaip sepanjang mana pun alamat URL lagi.

4. Clear history safari

Tap Setting > Safari > tap pada "Clear history". Alang-alang tap juga pada "Clear Cookies and Data". Maka history, cookies dan data 100% clear.

5. Block cookies

Tap Setting > Safari > Block Cookies > pilih "Always".

TITLE 2 - Emoji

Guna emoji untuk gambarkan emosi suka, sedih, dan sebagainya.

Tap Settings > General > Keyboard > Add New Keyboard > Emoji.

TITLE 3 - Battery

1. Nak cepat penuh charge iPhone? , hanya aktifkan "flight safe mode". Swipe paparan dari bawah skrin menghala ke atas. Pilih button airplane mode, cara terpantas tak nak ganggu solat (JANGAN LUPA OFF ALARM sebab tetap akan bunyi walau flight safe mode), nak charge mobile phone cepat penuh, nak putus hubungan melalui mobile phone sebentar.

2. Nak bateri tahan lebih lama?

Tap Setting > General > Spotlight search > untick yang kurang penting.

3. Paparan battery percentage icon

Tap Setting > General> Usage > "on" battery percentage.

Jenis lithium-ion adalah lebih baik lebih kerap di cas untuk memastikan jangka hayat bateri lebih lama. Masa terbaik untuk charge adalah ketika tahap bateri berada pada kadar 10-20%. Ianya akan memanjangkan jangka hayat bateri dari 400-600 cycle kepada 1000-1100 cycle. Ini bermakna jangan charge bateri ketika tahap bateri berada lebih dari 20%.

Sekali setiap 3 bulan pastikan bateri anda 0% dan pada kadar yang segera mulakan untuk di recharge sehingga penuh 100% bagi memastikan komponen bateri digunakan 100% setiap 3 bulan.

TITLE 4 - Compass

Compass bukan sahaja untuk compass, tapi boleh berfungsi sebagai pengukur ketepatan keseimbangan. Anda hanya perlu swipe ke kiri setelah aktifkan compass.

TITLE 5 - Camera

1. Nak focus gambar tanpa hilang focus yang membuatkan gambar anda blur? Hanya tekan pada screen beberapa saat sehingga keluar indication "AF Locked", kemudian anda boleh gerakkan kamera anda tanpa hilang focus.

2. Nak snap photo tanpa tekan pada butang di screen? Gunakan butang "volume" untuk snap photo.

TITLE 6 - Multitasking Menu

1. Nak cepat clear background apps? Hanya gerakkan 3 jari anda ke atas pada "multitasking menu" maka 3 background apps dapat anda clear serentak.

2. Apa jua aktiviti anda pada iPhone anda, nak clear hanya pergi ke "multitasking menu". Cara paling cepat untuk ke "multitasking menu" adalah dengan "double press" butang iphone.

TITLE 7 - Data

Anda nak jimatkan data? Pergi ke "setting>mobile data" dan pilih apps penting sahaja gunakan data anda, yang kurang penting anda tetapkan untuk bila ada sambungan Wi-Fi sahaja.

TITLE 8 - Network

Network macam tak kuat? Dapatkan ketepatan kekuatan network di mana anda berada ketika itu dengan dial *3001#12345#* dan tekan butang call. Jika result adalah -50 adalah bagus maka -100 adalah kurang bagus.

TITLE 9 - Fungsi Tap Pada Paparan Masa

1. Auto scroll up - Bila kita baca content di internet, terutama content yang panjang, cara mudah untuk kita naik ke paparan teratas adalah tap pada paparan masa yang terletak pada bahagian tengah teratas skrin mobile phone anda. Kalau website tiada button auto scroll up pun tak jadi masalah.

2. Teknik ini juga untuk mengecilkan paparan penuh yang melindungi button seperti back's button, multiple pages, bookmark dan sebagainya pada safari.

TITLE 10 - Shortcuts untuk cepat taip

Nak cepat typing?

Tap Setting > General > Keyboard > Text Replacement > + > sampai kat stage ni, anda nak shortcut untuk apa? katakan "Alhamdulillah ;)". Siap ada emoji lagi selepas text Alhamdulillah . So pada bahagian phrase dan shortcuts taipkan seperti berikut dan save.

Phrase > Alhamdulillah ;)

Shortcuts > alh

Tap save.

Later bila anda taip "alh" jer terus keluar perkataan lengkap "Alhamdulillah ;)" seperti yang telah anda setting. Mudah dan pantas. Standard kan semua shortcuts anda gunakan huruf kecil sahaja dan 3 huruf sahaja dengan menggunakan 3 huruf terawal pada perkataan yang anda mahu tetapkan.

TITLE 11 - Apps

1. Banyak Apps penyebab anda tak alert? Gunakan Apps berbeza untuk tujuan yang berbeza.

AZA gunakan WhatsApp untuk one-to-one communication. Telegram Messenger untuk group discussion. Ada perkara nak group chat, masa tu sahaja AZA gunakan Telegram Messenger. Group chat tak perlu notification sebab real time chat. Berbanding one-to-one chat yang memerlukan immediate respond bila sahaja dapat notification. Manakala Google Plus untuk integrated dengan Blogger. Ketiga-tiga Apps ini AZA gunakan untuk stay in touch dengan anda.

2. Versi iPhone anda tak sesuai dengan Apps version? Tak perlu nak lakukan perkara pelik jika anda tak boleh nak download apps kerana mobile phone version. Mari AZA ajarkan anda cara mudah untuk anda masih boleh download apps tersebut dengan menggunakan older apps version.

Login iTune pada komputer anda dengan menggunakan Apple ID anda seperti apple ID iPhone anda bila anda nak download apa-apa apps di Apps Store.

Download Apps yang tak boleh nak download pada iPhone anda tadi kerana kali ni pasti boleh kerana anda download ke komputer anda.

Step 3

Receive call anda tak dengar apa-apa sound? Check button pada iPhone anda adakah anda lupa switch button "silent-ringer" yang terletak pada bahagian atas button volume.

TITLE 13 - Sticker

Suka dengan sticker yang dikirim oleh rakan anda? Anda juga boleh gunakan sticker tersebut tanpa anda perlu bersusah payah untuk edit. Bagaimana?

Step 1 > Tap pada sticker tersebut. Kemudian akan dipaparkan dialog box dan anda pilih simbol "bintang" pada dalong box tersebut. Secara automatik anda dah boleh gunakan sticker tersebut untuk dikirimkan kepada rakan anda yang lain. Bagaimana?

Step 2 > Tap pada ruangan untuk anda taip message yang kebiasaannya anda gunakan untuk whatsapp rakan anda. kemudian anda tap pula pada simbol sticker yang terletak di penjuru kanan ruangan untuk anda taip message tadi. Anda akan dipaparkan simbol "jam", "bintang", "love" dan beberapa sticker yang anda dah download (jika ada). Tap pada simbol "bintang". Di situ tersimpan sticker yang anda copy dari rakan anda tadi.

TITLE 14 - iOS update AUTO/MANUAL

Setting > General > Software Update > Off. Tak nak auto update sebab kalau update cepat sangat, pastu baru tahu ada security flaws pada update terbaru tersebut kan naya. Bukan boleh percaya sangat ngan Apple tu. Dah banyak kali mereka release update tapi kemudian baru tahu ada security flaws.

TITLE 15 - Calendar

Gunakan app “calendar” yang ada pada iPhone anda sebagai reminder

TITLE 16 - Add Widget

Gunakan juga app add widget iaitu “up next” utk auto paparan semasa apa yg telah anda tetapkan pada calendar termasuk alarm.

TITLE 17 - Fetch / Push

Pastikan apps yang anda gunakan setting ke "fetch" bukan "push" email bagi memastikan bateri anda kurang buat kerja yang sebenarnya tak perlu kerap. Go to setting> Password & Accounts > fetch new data > OFF "Push" button. Go to fetch and select either manually/hourly/every 30 or 15 minutes.

TITLE 18 - To edit text

Click and hold the space bar. “you can move the cursor instead of trying to drag the cursor itself with your fat thumb”.

TITLE 19 - Reminders

Gunakan app Reminders yang terdapat pada iPhone anda untuk remind anda Birthday dan pelbagai perkara yang boleh anda asingkan ke pelbagai tab mengikut kategori yang anda cipta sendiri.

At a time when we can’t travel the world, the next best thing we can do is pick up a good travel book. As Emily Dickenson said, to shut our eyes is travel. Books transport us to distant lands and cultures. They nourish our wanderlust, entertain us, inform us, and provide us with a reservoir of potential trip ideas.

In short, they’re magic.

I love reading travel books. Without them, there would be places and cultures I’d never have heard of. Travel books have added depth to my travels and helped me develop much more nuanced perspectives of different countries and cultures. They’ve also inspired me to visit tons of new places all around the globe.

Of course, I love traveling even more than reading but since we can’t do that right now, books are our window out into the world.

If you’re are itching to get your fix but are stuck in lockdown or self-isolation, here are some suggestions to get you started and keep your wanderlust stoked:

1. The Atlas of Happiness: The Global Secrets of How to Be Happy, by Helen Russell

Helen Russell, author of one of my favorite books, The Year of Living Danishly, wrote this comical visual guide that takes readers around the world — from Iceland to New Zealand to Japan to Ireland — in search of the ways that people define and discover happiness in their lives. It’s an informative, well-researched, and a feel-good guide to how the world stays happy — which is especailly important these days!

2. Ultimate Journeys for Two: Extraordinary Destinations on Every Continent, by Anne and Mike Howard

Having founded Honeytrek.com, Anne and Mike teamed up with National Geographic to curate these recommendations for intrepid couples. Chapters are organized by type of destination (beaches, mountains, deserts, and so on) to help travelers discover new places and experiences based on their interests.

9. Wanderlust: A Love Affair with Five Continents, by Elisabeth Eaves

Written by Elisabeth Eaves, this book follows her journeys around the world as she satiates her wanderlust and learns about herself. It started off slow but I really loved the writing here. It really drew you in and left you inspired. The book follows her from being a student studying a broad to being a backpacker around the world to living in Pakistan and Australia. Along the way she comes to peace with the wanderlust inside her and figures out how to balance being a nomad and someone with roots.

10. Genghis Khan and the Making of the Modern World, by Jack Weatherford

I never knew much about Genghis Kahn so when this was recommended to me, I thought why not. It was a surprisingly pageturner. This was not some dry history book filled with footnotes but a vividly told story about Kahn and his descendants. Most history books miss the “story” part but not this one. It has an arch, vivid imagery, and incredible characters. And it fills you in a lot on the Mongolian empire. Who knew they had a central bank, universal education, paper money, didn’t torture, or had religious freedom?

11. Ten Years a Nomad: A Traveler’s Journey Home, by me!

This is a memoir about my ten years traveling and backpacking the world, my philosophy on travel, and the lessons I learned that can help you travel better. It takes you on a trip around the world from start to finish: getting the travel bug, planning, setting off, the highs and lows, the friends made, what happens when you come back — and the lessons and advice that result from all that.

12. How to Travel the World on $50 a Day, by me!

Okay, I know I include this book in every list, but it’s awesome, so you should read it! My second home: Cuba 🇨🇺 I've been out of reach for a week. No wifi, no phone, I forgot about it all. I took a break from Internet, social media, distanced myself from all the daily distractions. There's nothing like this, I reset myself, recharged my batteries. Now I'm back in Santa Clara. These are few pictures I took in Varadero, a lovely holiday resort. It's a beauty but it has nothing to do with the real Cuban reality. Though Cubans love it as in Varadero it's easier to buy basic things, there's little bit more variety in shops. For the last 3 years I’ve been living in Cuba, it was my dream to be able to post comfortably since leaving the house to a WiFi Park or hotel and it happened just couple days after I left home to Europe for Xmas :( Well, this 3G cellphone service is definitely a huge step ahead, but the downside is that it’s extremely expensive not only for western standard but crazy expensive for cuban wages - Official government salary is anywhere from $16 - $40 for majority of people here) so do the math - someone will have to pay for it. "I was traveling in first class and they gave me an invitation for the VIP area," says José Mario, a Cuban who each month takes the Copa Airlines route to Panama working as a "mule." Numerous trips allow you to accumulate points that you can take advantage of, from time to time, to travel in more comfort. But the VIP area has not met their expectations. "They told me I had to wait for other customers to finish eating, because there were not enough dishes," he remembers with annoyance after his failed attempt serve himself some nuts and cheese from the available buffet. The pilots themselves have had to explain to the passengers about departure delays because of not having "enough vehicles to bring the luggage to the plane". Added to this is the strict customs control over luggage, whose thoroughness is not only designed to prevent crime but to control the bringing of technological devices into the country (such as DVDs, NanoSations, hard disks or laptops) or large quantities of commonly used products. The most "meticulously" checked flights are those from the US, Mexico, Panama, Haiti, Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago and other regular routes for the "mules." In the area before passing through immigration, employees are wandering around with posters bearing the names of some travelers. Some approach families with children or newcomers who look like Cubans living abroad. "For 40 dollars I can pass you without problems from customs," whispers a worker to a couple with two children. For a certain fee employees can avoid passing through the search or paying for excess imported luggage, a relief for many Cubans living abroad and arriving loaded with gifts. For each kilo of luggage that exceeds the limit of 50 kilos, there is a fee that must be paid in CUC, and the fees also depend on the type of objects transported. Hello Happy Chocolate lovers!

I am writing to you from southern France, where I am visiting my father’s home, with some friends and family. Taking some time to recharge, enjoy time with my kids, visit old caves and fossils and delicious food. I am struck by a few things as I wander the Languedoc Roussillon area and notice the cultural differences. It is far from my first time here, but I am still struck by some noticeable cultural differences…

Before I go into that, here is what we are tasting this Saturday!

The newest Areté bar uses cacao from Haiti, a relatively new origin, where work is being done to improve the post harvest process and produce better cacao, with fewer flaws. Come check out this bar and see if you like it (we do!), we’ll have it out to compare and contrast with Sirene’s Guatemala 73%.

To contrast these plain darks, we will be tasting one of our all time favorites, Momtombo’s dark milk chocolate covered seeds, produced completely in Nicaragua, down to the boxes, the packaging, the sugar and labor. Bite into these unusual, whole cacao beans, that have been hand peeled to remove the shell, and enjoy the nutty, ashy flavors of the Nicaraguan cacao bean, beautifully complemented by the dark milk creamy chocolate.

The final luscious concoction is a rare treat from SOMA, their milk gianduja tube. Like a giant confection that you slice up in to pieces, to enjoy with a tumbler of scotch, or a sip of ice wine… the whole crunchy hazelnuts and milk chocolate gianduja with dark chocolate shell, will leave you understanding how they have stood next to their Italian peers and won chocolate awards for their delicious gianduja.

A brief note to ask you to please be patient on July 1st (not this Saturday, but next) because we will be short staffed. Summer time is a hard time for chocolate in many ways. We are having a hard time being in a position to order lots of different types of bars, to maintain our regular variety, and keep your taste buds tantalized. But we are working on it! Thanks for being patient, especially on July 1st, when we will be very short staffed.

THOUGHTS WHILE TRAVELING…

Here are a few things that struck me. I thought it might be nice to add some music in my dad’s house, so thought I would nip out and buy a small blue tooth speaker to use in the kitchen and living room. I popped into a store with electronics and found a toaster (needed one of those as well). I was surprised (and mildly irritated) to find maybe 4 speakers to choose from, and three of the four required an audio cable to connect my phone to the speaker. I chose not to buy anything. I would rather buy nothing than bad options, for chocolate and also for blue tooth speakers.

Having habituated to Silicon Valley availability and outrageous amounts of choice, this was a moment of surprise for me. Back in the valley, I could choose my favorite shape, size and color combo so that the speaker could be a statement. Here, there are far fewer options. It felt like I was in the global south, with an empty store with no choices, ok, I am exaggerating, but it certainly felt more like Cuba than the US.

On the other hand, it is amazing to me the choices this country has made around what *is* important. I can buy a beautiful camembert cheese for less then 2 euros ($2.50 USD). A whole fresh baguette for less than 2 euros. Four single serving organic full fat yogurts for one and a half euros. Ok, I won’t go on, the point is that delicious, high quality food is one of the most valued things in this country. The butter is delicious. The food is accessible to almost everyone. You can eat well with very little money.

So, in the valley we have lots of “stuff”, most of which sits in the accessible range at Target or Costco. And we have extremely expensive food that is for the most part, undervalued and hard to find. Our country chooses to subsidize corn and soy, but not fresh vegetables and fruits being grown locally. But, damn, our valley knows how to fund and incentivize the best minds to design beautiful blue tooth speakers.

All so interesting. And, like always, every place has its charm, advantages and disadvantages… So, back to taking it all in. I am headed to Switzerland tomorrow, while many of you will be tasting Happy Chocolate, I will be meeting up with our group to explore the very old tradition of chocolate in Switzerland. I am very excited to visit a few factories and new makers who have both laid the groundwork for so much good quality traditional chocolate and the ground breaking new movement to make chocolate that not only serves the consumer market, but the hard working folks in the global south, who work where cacao starts, and have been badly abused for so long.
