Fave ask 5 and 17!
5. fave genre? Thrillers! I love thrillers - the suspense, the mystery, the twist. After that, I love heists. The planning, the pieces coming together, the last minute problem they have to overcome/the ringleader has already accounted for. Good shit. Both are even better on the reread/rewatch because you get to appreciate the foreshadowing happening and the pieces dropping into place earlier.
17. fave holiday? Thanksgiving! Best food and have a new tradition now that I get together with my siblings and we cook the chicken (only three of us, not enough for a turkey rip) and all the sides, which was super fun. I love them so much.

7 comfort movies
I was tagged by @loreleys-road-to-md thanks as always 😊
1. The Shining
Tumblr media
I love scary movies that don't use overly crude scenes to convey fear and the shining does that perfectly. Throughout the whole movie one has the growing feeling that there is something wrong with the hotel and watches Jack slowly loosing is mind.
2. The Devil Wears Prada
Tumblr media
One of my favourite rim com out there, yes it has various problems but it's entertaining. I don't really watch many movies but I watched this 6 or 7 times.
3. Star Wars
Tumblr media
Do I have to say anything about star wars? I think not. It's great if you like science fiction this is a MUST. The first trilogy is a crescendo of action and battles in space and for the time the special effects aren't even bad.
4. Shutter Island
Tumblr media
This movie leaves you hanging on the edge of your seat up until the end... Well probably even after the end.
5. The Hunger Games
Tumblr media
I recently rewatched the first movie and was surprised at how it's themes, although treated for young adult and teenagers, are now more relevant than when the movie first came out.
6. Notting Hill
Tumblr media
This is another sappy romantic comedy and it's okay this way. Also great cast.
7. The silence of the Lambs
Tumblr media
I've watched this movie only recently but it's so good, not as good as the book, but good. The characters are complex and fascinating not just Hannibal. The story is captivating and I love how tense I feel while both reading and watching, I wanted to continue watching an watching.
I tag @doktorwhat, @faery-dust @look-where-we-are-now :)

My Favorite Movies of the 2010s
It’s the end of the decade, so I thought I’d join in and post a top ten.  As always, keep in mind that this is a list of my FAVORITE movies of the decade, not the “greatest”.  Now, before I get to the top ten, here are some of the runner ups.
Most Rewatchable: Take Me Home Tonight
Tumblr media
I was one of very few people who saw this flick in theaters, (it didn’t even make the top ten at the box office its opening weekend,) but I have rewatched it a million times since.  Love the 80′s setting, the ensemble cast, and the conceit that the plot unfolds over the course of one night.  Relatable and funny, I highly recommend it, if you haven’t seen it already.
Favorite Guilty Pleasure: Hot Tub Time Machine
Tumblr media
Who would’ve thought a movie with this stupid a premise would actually have as much depth, heart, and of course laughs, as it did.  Cusack at his most Cusackiest, again, that 1980′s setting, and a cameo from Chevy Chase; what’s not to love?
Most Marvelous Movie: The Avengers
Tumblr media
This movie was everything a Marvel movie should be.  Rewarding if you saw the movies leading up to it, (though unlike the more recent Avengers flicks, makes sense even if you haven’t seen the other movies,) emotional depth, and most importantly, it’s entertaining as hell.
And now for the top ten list...
10.  Spotlight
Tumblr media
No nonsense filmmaking, tight script, and a great ensemble cast, telling a compelling, true story of great investigative journalism, makes this one of the great movies of the decade.
9.  Mission: Impossible - Fallout
Tumblr media
This Mission: Impossible is everything one of those movies should be: a non-stop thrill ride with impressive stunts, and a story with twists and turns that keeps you on the edge of your seat from start to finish.
8.  Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)
Tumblr media
Michael Keaton’s triumphant return to Hollywood, in an Oscar-nominated performance, in a visually immersive film, with a great ensemble cast.
7.  The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo
Tumblr media
Between this and the other David Fincher thriller of the decade, Gone Girl, I probably should’ve gone with Gone Girl.  It was more popular, more socially relevant, and features the amazing Rosamund Pike in an unforgettable performance, but screw it.  I enjoyed this film better.  I enjoyed the old school, mystery thriller elements of it, I enjoyed the book, and it features my second favorite non-Bond performance by Daniel Craig, (after Layer Cake). Also, Rooney Mara was great as the title character.  I love Claire Foy, but I really wish Rooney got to come back for another round as Lisabeth Salander.
6.  Black Swan
Tumblr media
Much like The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, this is a movie about obsession.  I love movies about obsession, probably because I am a bit obsessive myself.  Great performance from arguably my favorite leading lady, Natalie Portman, in a movie well directed by Darren Aronofsky, and beautifully shot in 16mm by director of photography Matthew Libatique.  This movie was an A+ theater-going experience, that has continued to hold up over the years.
5.  The Dark Knight Rises
Tumblr media
Haters gonna hate on this one, but I don’t care.  What can I say about this movie that will help you understand why I love it...it’s a Batman movie, starring Christian Bale, the scene-stealing Anne Hathaway, Tom Hardy, Gary Oldman, Marion Cottiliard, Joseph Gordon Levitt...AND Michael Caine, AND Morgan Freeman, AND Cillian Murphy, AND Liam Neeson, beautifully shot in IMAX, and directed by visionary director Christopher Nolan.  That’s enough for me.  But if you want more, I really responded to the emotionality of the piece, the character arc of Bruce Wayne, and the fact it concluded what I thought was an amazing trilogy.  Again, haters gonna hate, but whatever.
4.  Shutter Island
Tumblr media
Much like The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo vs. Gone Girl, I probably should’ve gone with the other Martin Scorsese-Leonardo DiCaprio pic from this decade, The Wolf of Wall Street, but I like this one better.  It’s a classic film noir/psychological thriller, (I’m a big fan of the genre,) with a tight script, beautifully shot by Bob Richardson, with what I think is Leo DiCaprio’s best performance.  And if your response is to say you saw the twist coming a mile a way and that ruined the movie for you, watch it again, because you missed the point of the movie.
3.  The Social Network
Tumblr media
Director David Fincher firing on all cylinders, an amazing script by Aaron Sorkin, telling a socially-relevant story that defines my generation.  ‘Nuff said.
2.  Skyfall
Tumblr media
Imagine a world where you get a top-notch Bond flick with a classic Bond villain played by Javier Bardem AND a well-crafted drama directed by Sam Mendes, shot by Roger Deakins, composed by Thomas Newman, with an Oscar-winning song from Adele.  Let the sky fall!
1.  Inception
Tumblr media
Enough has been said about Inception, so I’ll just say it is a beautifully shot movie, directed by one of my favorite directors at the height of his game, with a great cast, that truly captured my imagination.  What a fun time at the movies.

I went through that whole damn list because personally I love answering those questions and so I assume you'd enjoy more than one. If not... fuck you. xoxo Jal. Questions: 11 - 22 - 32 - 37 - 58 - 86 - 102 - 108 - 137 - 141 - 170
11. What foreign country would you most like to visit and why?Japan, because I’m a cringy weeb.
22. Last show you binge watched?Ehhh I recently rewatched ointb because the new season is coming out soon. But a new show would be the 100 (episodes are still coming out but I bingewatched the rest of them. It counts okay.)
32. Have you ever gotten a ticket while driving?A parking ticket :’)
37. Any movie(s) you can watch over and over again and enjoy just as much every time?Spirited away, you keep noticing new details no matter how many times you’ve watched it. Other than that, probably shutter island. The plot is kinda ruined once you’ve seen it before but that won’t stop me.
58. Favorite YouTube channel?Hmmm, hmmmm. I got lots of favorite youtube channels actually, but if I have to pic a fave, as of now, it would be NibblesOfficial because she’s a babe.
86. Phrase you say the most?“Goverdoemese kloete”(gewoon alles met kloten. ik scheld gewoon een beetje te veel)
102. Favorite Pokémon?Mhm, I don’t really have a fave anymore but I remember, when I was little, my fave was Lucario
108. Biggest pet peeve?Only one? Fuck, I got too many but my biggest pet peeve above all the rest is bad hygiene. I always complain about people needing a shower when I take public transport.
137. Favorite video game?Currently, dark souls. It makes me rage sometimes but damn, good shit.
141. Have you ever felt you were born in the wrong period of history?Don’t call me out like that. I think I’d love to have been born early enough so I would be in my twenties when the punk phase was mainstream. Because, well, have you seen me? Idk, I think it would be cool but at the same time I kinda wanna live in the Victorian era too. Don’t judge me, I love the fashion.
170. Do you collect anything?Gemstones! I started collecting them when I was 7 years old with my grandfather. We used to go to conventions and everything until he passed away (this got sad real quick but anyway) and I kept, and still keep, collecting them.
Send me some numbers!

Storytellers -  Shutter Island: Why Perspective is Everything
following are just personal thoughts which i tried to fit into the tags except it was all too long and got cut off. spoilers ahead fr that obv
but yeah i recently had a rewatch years after i saw it first and rlly appreciated all the signs that’re in there leading up to your plot twist, and this is a good video to dive into that entire setup. i saw some other videos that had great points re: symbolism of fire (delusion & fantasy) vs water (reality) as portrayed in various (most) scenes. or re: the scene where teddy is interviewing patients and you gets hints fr yr twist because 1. you see a guard standing behind the interviewee AND teddy but not behind chuck 2. when a guy gets mad chuck’s movements suggest hes calling fr someone to restrain/manage teddy, not the other patient and 3. some sedative injection is shown still close at hand after that patient is removed but teddy is stil present. another thing i thought might hint at his patient status but wasnt mentioned in anything i found is whenever he's given medicine (even if it's just aspirin) it's handed to him in one of those lil cups and he just takes and downs it on auto pilot like it's a movement he's familiar with? idk if it’s a reach to assume any other person would be like “huh” fr a second but it's smth that caught my eye. but anyway i feel like this is a really good summary as it gets a lot of my main sort of feelings across while adding a lot more to it as well.
i esp like the focus on siding and identifying w the main character and sharing his experience, using POV shots to show various continuity errors (like the dissapearing glass of WATER) or delusions (mistaking a lighter patch on a rock fr chucks body), and hinting at unreliable narration (the camp liberation + george noyce speaking a truth teddy doesnt believe). i mean if you watch it without knowing the twist then you’re completely siding with the guy as the nursing staff joke about and the police are uninterested in finding the missing patient, the paranoia and distrust seems justified bc you don’t know what they’re keeping from you and from the main character. so yeah the fact that the audience will turn a blind eye to reality and omit the laid out truth to remain aligned w protagonist is just. good shit man

78. My Top 100 Movies, In No Particular Order pt. 1
This has taken a lot of time to finally finish accumulating, but I wanted to motivate myself to watch more iconic films over the past year. Here are (half of) my favorites.
1. The Way, Way Back (my all-time favorite coming-of-age story)
2. Elf (it’s more than just a favorite holiday film for me, really, it’s good all year ‘round)
3. Spirited Away (the final scene with the parents as pigs has stuck with me since my childhood)
4. Citizen Kane (acclaimed by many as one of the “best films ever made”, I was hesitant by the beginning... but Rosebud!)
5. Rushmore (my favorite Wes Anderson movie)
6. Shutter Island (the suspense... the ending!)
7. Get Out (it’s only gotten better the more I’ve watched it, and with this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hBvcngHRTFg)
8. Battle Royale (I’m not typically one for gore, but the storyline/acting/cinematography is worth it)
9. The Room/The Disaster Artist (I wasn’t sure if it was okay to put a pairing of movies together, but then I remembered it’s my list and I can do whatever I want)
10. Lovelace (Amanda Seyfried and Peter Sarsgaard are great in this biopic)
11. Crash (my first memorable introduction into an intersecting vignette movie style, and a memorable storyline)
12. Wall-E (no explanation needed)
13. The Truman Show (also no explanation needed, right?)
14. Dreamgirls (rewatched this movie recently and sang along to every song off the soundtrack)
15. The Dark Knight (I don’t usually get entrhalled with hero/villain movies, but this is an exception)
16. Selma
17. Arrival (I was not anticipating this ending... I’ve heard the book it’s based on, “Story Of Your Life” by Ted Chiang is worth reading, too)
18. Bridesmaids (has never failed to make me laugh)
19. Gone Girl (the suspense is real)
20. Zootopia
21. Reservoir Dogs (my first, and one of only two, liked Tarantino movies... and I still closed my eyes a lot watching it)
22. Grand Budapest Hotel (W. Anderson does it again)
23. Fantasia/Fantasia 2000 (http://animationanomaly.com/2011/04/07/5-fundamental-differences-between-fantasia-and-fantasia-2000/)
24. Shanghai Noon (Jackie Chan and Owen Wilson, that is all)
25. Best In Show
26. To Have and Have Not (Bogie, Hoagy, and Bacall... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SUn4DOGiY_A)
27. Star Wars (IV is my favorite solely for when Luke meets Yoda, but I’ll lump the entire saga inside this one number so it doesn’t become nearly one tenth of my whole list)
28. Zoolander
29. The Incredibles (picking my favorite movie amongst all the animated choices would be difficult, too difficult to actually do, but I know this would be a tough contender)
30. Good Will Hunting (Robin Williams + first watched this in my high-school freshman year geometry class, never forget)
31. The World According to Garp (also one of my favorite books, plus Robin Williams in another great role)
32. American Gangster (I don’t think of myself as a huge gangster movie genre fan, but this has been one of the more captivating ones for me)
33. 50 First Dates (I do however think of myself as a romantic comedy sap)
34. Monty Python and the Holy Grail
35. A Bug’s Life
36. Home Alone 1 (and 2 and 3 are honorable mentions, but 1 will always the classic)
37. Juno (glad to have grown up getting to see this one in theaters)
38. Mulan (I didn’t fully appreciate her strong-independent-woman-power as a kid, but rewatching Disney princess movies now this is definitely the winner plotline)
39. Princess Diaries (strong ladies all around)
40. 13 Going On 30 (great for so many reasons, including my introduction to Pat Benatar)
41. Dallas Buyers’ Club
42. Shrek (actually pretty certain this is my favorite animated movie...)
43. The Soloist
44. Birdman
45. A Christmas Story (the leg lamp!)
46. Sleepless In Seattle
47. Wallace and Gromit (the old ones that I had on VHS as a kid were gems... “everybody knows the moon’s made of cheese!”)
48. Grave of the Fireflies
49. Boys Don’t Cry (I remember watching this for my film society class in high school and bawling my eyes out in the middle of a classroom)
50. Napoleon Dynamite (instant classic)

have you had any chance to start watching any new shows or movies? or are you too busy with uni? what are planning on watching.
Hey! I’ve been pretty busy with uni, but I’ve been watching Sex Education almost every night for the past two weeks and I’m obsessed with it! I just have two episodes left before I’m finished with season 2. I also watched The Wilds a little bit ago and I’m currently on season 2 of The Expanse and season 5 of Schitt’s Creek. I also watched The Boys and oh my god do I love that show. Cannot wait for season 3!
As for movies, I’ve really been letting that slide in favor of tv lately, but recently I have watched a few. For 2020/2021 movies, I watched Nomadland (adored it!), I Care A Lot (it was...okay), Life Like (not a thriller at all but lots of ass shots idk), The Assistant (I really loved this), One Night in Miami (masterful), and Malcolm & Marie (which had good performances and meh writing). I also finally watched and loved Blade Runner 2049! Also enjoyed Free Fall, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Igby Goes Down, Full Metal Jacket, and my rewatch of 20th Century Women! There were some others in there but those were the standouts.
I really want to watch as many of the Oscar nominated movies as possible, but outside of those, I’m also eyeing The Departed, Killing Them Softly, I’m Thinking of Ending Things, God’s Own Country, Dead Poets Society, Ammonite, Malcolm X, Roman Holiday, The Lighthouse, The Witch, Hereditary, Melancholia, and a bunch of others. My watchlist really is miles long. Not to mention rewatches I’m itching for, like Shutter Island, Inception, Black Swan, and The Dark Knight.
For shows, I really want to watch Black Sails, The Handmaid’s Tale, Normal People, Ramy, Fleabag, Hannibal, The Fall, Westworld (I’m on season 2 but need to pick it up again), and finally finish my Mr. Robot rewatch!
This got so long, sorry! What have you been watching/wanting to watch?

march movie wrap up
(check out my february movie wrap up here)
(january movie wrap up also available!)
i watched 14 movies this month! only 2 of them i watched at the cinema, but around 5 of them are recently released movies. check out my full film diary in my letterboxd, but here are the highlights of the movies i watched.
the boy and the beast (2015) because my boyfriend wants me to watch more anime, and because he wants to see me cry when watching them. i did, even though i didn’t expect to dammit! the animation in here is pretty, but the story was what really got me.
arrival (2016). i watched this movie at home cause i didnt get the chance to watch it at the cinema. i rated it 3.5 out of 5 stars, it wasn’t bad but it wasn’t amazing either. it is definitely quite different from the sci-fi alien movies you would expect, this one is more focused on cinematography, characters, pretty shots instead of the science or politics or thrills itself. not that i dislike it!
logan (2017). a good conclusion to the tiring movie franchise, i kinda had low expectations cause i was starting to get tired of people glorifying wolverine so much. i didn’t cry though, but i did enjoy the whole movie itself.
midnight in paris (2011). i just can’t help but really really love woody allen, despite the controversy behind the person himself. his work is beautiful, i love the shots and themes he’d express, and the dialogues are excellent. this movie is also excellent, i didn’t get bored a single minute of the movie without the movie being filled with action or exciting plot. i love how even though it’s quite slow, you can really feel all the characters, the story itself, and the vibes it gives off, all the old songs and the costumes and the setting, not to mention the music, was wonderfully arranged.
hidden figures (2016). watched this at the cinema, it was a good watch, not especially incredible but it’s very entertaining, fun to watch, exciting, had a great cast, awesome dialogues.
zodiac (2007). watched this because jake gyllenhaal was in it, and i was in the mood for a thriller, crime detective type of movie. it was very thrilling. and i was watching it alone at home in the dark and i got creeped out lol.
moonlight (2016) was yet another movie i watched at home because i missed it when it was at the cinema. i really liked it, actually. i don’t really know if it deserves all the awards and hype it has gotten, but i love the story and the cinematography and the acting. sure, the story is basically straightforward. we all know he’s a black gay guy. but how the story unfolds, the small conflicts and the character development, was well constructed. i liked the dialogues (or lack of them bc of the cutely quiet main character), and the shots were just really really pretty. i also particularly liked the family themes it expressed.
rewatches: stonehearst asylum (still not better than shutter island imo, and the romance is just disgusting tbh), the lion the witch and the wardrobe (it’s amazing how much i still remember from this movie even tho it’s been years since i last watched it. it made me wanna reread the whole narnia series). some horrible movies: the good girl (sorry jake gyllenhaal it wasn’t your fault i just disliked all the romance), the mission (not that it’s bad, i think i just watched it at the wrong time, and got really bored), hacksaw ridge (i don’t hate it, i just don’t like war movies in general tbh).
series i watched, cause why not:
new girl! such a fun series, i binge watched the first like 3 seasons on my laptop around a year ago then suddenly gave up on it, but then that fire rekindled when me and my boyfriend randomly decided to watch it again on netflix and we loved it! spent like the whole day just watching episodes back to back, laughing out loud at so many moments. my fav character is nick omg. also ferguson <3 currently finished with season 4 and not in the mood to continue with season 5.
rick and morty. again, another series i watched with my boyfriend lol. it’s super fun and disgustingly good, can’t wait for season 3 omg.
riverdale. watched it with my housemates on friday nights as we drink our wines and shout at the super hot cole sprouse bc omg look at that FACE DAYUM. the plot is crappy but i like keeping up with it, it’s just fun to watch pretty people.
iron fist. watched it because my boyfriend told me to (he’s a huge marvel freak). still on episode 3 or something, not in the mood to continue but maybe.
13 reasons why. just started it a few days ago, again watching it with my housemates. it’s quite fun so far! a lot of unanswered questions on the borderline of me getting tired of asking questions everywhere, like what the hell is going onnnn??? the actors aren’t as pretty as the ones in riverdale, but i still enjoy it. only on episode 2 so far.
now that i realize it, i haven’t had a lot of time to watch series on my own, most of them i watch on netflix when i’m having dinner or with my boyfriend/friends. i did try to start peaky blinders season 3 and the x-files season 10, but i’m currently not in the mood and don’t have the time to watch them tbh.
add me on letterboxd.

oml shutter island is one of my favorite films of all time (along w dead poets society). i think we ARE soulmates wow. ive been meaning to watch parasite but i need to be in the right state of mind to actually watch a film. the only show ive watched recently is “the great” and ive really enjoyed it (although very disappointing sex scenes at least once an episode). other than that ive just been rewatching stuff for background noise (the good place was one rewatch) -anon who wants to make u tea
also!! add on to last ask bc i rambled, ive been meaning to watch the studio ghibli movies but i just havent gotten to it yet. someone once told me i have the same energy as over the garden wall and i still dont know what that means -anon who wants to make u tea
disappointing sex scenes... AJAJSGDHDNMS im on the floor sgshsnsjkdj i dont know what that means either. but it's okay to not have the energy to watch as many shows as your contemporaries, i think, you should watch them on your own terms. 💕💕💕
also i hope youre having a lovely day, you certainly do deserve one. 🥺🥺🥺

A Film Discussion: Favorite Movie for Every Year of Our Lives
Full disclosure, I flat-out stole this idea from the A.V. Club.  I called upon my old pal John Iatesta to compare and discuss our lists. Enjoy.
Nick’s List

Honorable Mentions: Before Midnight (2013), Mud (2013), Beasts of the Southern Wild (2012), Dazed and Confused (1993), Say Anything... (1989)
John’s List
1992: Wayne's World 1993: Jurassic Park 1994: Dumb and Dumber 1995: Casino 1996: Fargo 1997: Jackie Brown 1998: The Big Lebowski 1999: Big Daddy 2000: Gladiator 2001: Training Day 2002: Adaptation 2003: Old School 2004: Anchorman 2005: The Weatherman 2006: Stranger than Fiction 2007: Hot Fuzz 2008: Burn After Reading 2009: Inglorious Basterds 2010: Shutter Island 2011: Paul 2012: Django Unchained 2013: Inside Llewyn Davis 2014: Birdman 2015: Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens 2016: The Nice Guys 2017: John Wick 2
Honorable Mentions: Sicario (2015), No Country for Old Men (2007), Inside Man (2006), Billy Madison (1995), My Cousin Vinny (1992)
ND: I think what stands out most is the specific gaps in our resumes, mostly in the early years. So it's easy to latch onto sentimental favorites (The Brave Little Toaster, Wayne's World, Dogma) and "prestigious" films I haven't seen in years and probably haven’t age well (Rain Man, Good Will Hunting). My movie-watching intake has gone up considerably as I’ve gotten older, allowing me to explore some classics well after the fact to up my credibility ever so slightly.
I'm as surprised as anyone to see the Coen Brothers as the most represented on my list with three films (as well as yours with four), edging out Richard Linklater, Alfonso Cuaron and Paul Thomas Anderson with two apiece. I routinely try to knock Coens down a peg, but when they hit, they are masters. Inside Llewyn Davis is their crowning achievement if you ask me, melding the best of their darkest and lightest, with a powerhouse performance from Oscar Isaac to boot -- and the songs! I could watch that movie every day.
Tumblr media
ND: Inside Llewyn Davis is so good that it managed to come out on top in my most contested year, 2013. Before Midnight and Mud are two of my all-time favorites. The former was easier to leave off with Before Sunrise's inclusion -- it's my least favorite of the trilogy, but 1995 had a clearer path than 2013 or 2004 (Before Sunset). Mud's exclusion was even more painful, leaving my list McConaughey-less
JI: I thank you for my Inside Llewyn Davis inclusion. You raved about that movie during our time at The Sports Network and it pushed me to watch it much sooner than I probably would have before. I agree with you to an extent about the Coens. I don't think they're overrated but when they miss its like Ryan Howard in the 2010 NLCS*, see: The Ladykillers and Hail, Caesar!.
*(Editor’s Note: I believe you mean the 2011 NLDS loss to the Cardinals, where Howard went 2-for-19 (.105) and ended the series with a blown-out Achilles tendon aka the downfall of the Philadelphia Phillies dynasty.)
ND: Our lists aren't so different. You have even more black comedies than me, with the four Coens, a handful of Tarantino, even Casino, Adaptation, Birdman and The Nice Guys would qualify with their mix of light and dark. I think it's important to bring levity to most dramas (though my selections of Children of Men, 21 Grams, and the works of PT Anderson run contrary), and you seem to agree. Enlighten me on your process, good man.
JI: I definitely agree with your first point in there being gaps in knowledge, but for me it’s more spotty than just one era. I found myself sometimes in the mid-2000s not having a real standout, but you aren't wrong about some movies having very strong sentimental value. Wayne's World still holds up though!
Tumblr media
JI: Like you, my "good" movie intake has gone up as I've gotten older. I’ve developed my own taste for movies and can now afford to go see what I want. I recently saw Rain Man for the first time and while it wasn't bad, I'd agree it doesn't really hold up.
Brief aside, can we talk about Jim Carrey's 1994? Ace Ventura, Dumb and Dumber and The Mask. Dude was an absolute fireball that year.
ND: Jim Carrey was as integral part of my childhood as well. My brother and I used to recite Dumb and Dumber dialogue on car rides to the shore (I was Harry more often than not). But 1994 was never not going to be Pulp Fiction. It's become a cliche at this point -- film people clinging to Pulp Fiction like gospel -- but it's no exaggeration so say that discovering it changed my cinema-going outlook forever.
Tumblr media
JI: My process was to not just choose the best in terms of critical acclaim to trumpet myself up and say "look how well versed in film I am,” but to choose movies I could actually defend as being one of my favorites. I also excluded children's or Disney movies because they lean too heavily on sentimentality and felt like they'd be a crutch. This is why a movie like Billy Madison is on my Honorable Mention list. I can recite that movie nearly line-for-line.
ND: So no to Billy Madison, but yes to Big Daddy?
JI: 1999 was just one of those years that had a bigger gap than 1995. I got halfway through Fight Club and was bored to tears, and I love Ed Norton (your long-lost brother) and Brad Pitt but I just didn't see what everyone else does. I've only seen The Matrix once and same with The Insider.  And probably the two biggest omissions from that year are The Sixth Sense and The Hurricane. All those factors considered, I couldn't in good faith put a movie I've only seen once above one I've seen two dozen times. Also, I'm semi acquaintances with Peter Dante now that I'm an LA hot shot (I gagged just typing that) and his "They're not scrawny, they're nice," line gets me every time.
Maybe the hardest part for me was not finding space for a PT Anderson movie, with There Will be Blood losing a close 2007 race to Hot Fuzz, or a true Philip Seymour Hoffman movie, (The Big Lebowski doesn't count). He’s likely my favorite actor of all time. I don't think I've seen a bad performance out of him and not being able to squeeze him in any year stings.
Only one Scorsese movie from you (Goodfellas) -- probably his second best behind Raging Bull -- and only two from me (Casino, Shutter Island). He’s long been considered my favorite director but most of his best came out prior to my birth. Is this a similar issue for you, or do you not hold him in such high regard?
Tumblr media
ND: Maybe the biggest catch with this project is the year arguably plays an even bigger role than the films themselves. So yes, I would never hesitate to put Scorsese in my top 3 favorite directors of all time, but I definitely prefer his pre-Goodfellas work (Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Mean Streets) to his more recent films. Although The Departed gave Children of Men a run for its money in 2006, and The Wolf of Wall Street and Hugo made my top 10 lists in their respective years. I consider Casino to be B/B- material for Marty, though De Niro's suits suit game is elite.
I'm glad you made special mention of Philip Seymour Hoffman. We've really bonded over our love for him and I was surprised to see him shut out of your list. He's the primary reason why The Master outlasted a great 2012 field. It's a tough pill to swallow, but it gets even better as the years go on and will live on in the zeitgeist for decades. If you figure a way to live without serving a master, any master, then let the rest of us know, will you? For you'd be the first person in the history of the world.
JI: Along Came Polly was a consideration for me solely for PSH as the unforgettable Sandy Lyle.
Tumblr media
ND: Long live PSH.
I think we both did a good job managing our sentimentality. I only have a few notable asterisks. It's been 25 years since I've watched The Brave Little Toaster, but all this time later, when I saw it listed among the 1987 films, I smiled. And in an otherwise terrible year for film (I know it's beyond your jurisdiction, youngin, but take a gander), that shit mattered the most to me. I will never apologize for 2011's The Muppets. There is preciously little in this world as important to me as the Muppets. I am forever indebted to Jason Segel for keeping their legacy alive in the spirit of Jim Henson's vision.
Can we talk about 2005, please? The consensus best pic is Brokeback Mountain, though I've regretfully never seen it. We both went with curveball selections: You with The Weatherman and me with The 40-Year-Old-Virgin. It's not my favorite Apatow production from that era (Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story stand tall above the rest), but its only real competition from 2005 was from Batman Begin and (yes, really) The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants.
JI: 2005 was really rough. I'm a big Nic Cage fan and The Weatherman was kind of my default favorite. Coming off of a John Wick 2 high, I recently watched Constantine for the first time and considered selecting it just because of recency bias and it wasn't even very good. Batman Begins is really good but as time goes on, I feel like the Nolan Batman trilogy has become less rewatchable for some reason, and Batman is basically the only superhero movie I like. Keaton is a personal favorite for me so I can always watch his two Batman movies.
ND: I tend to agree with you about Nolan's Batman, though I think their lack of rewatchability is in no small part due to the superhero saturation of the past decade. The tropes and cliches that are getting beat into the ground now were created in Batman Begins, so it deserves a lot of credit for that. Anyway, neither of us picked a Batman film, so back to 2005 -- I remember liking The Weatherman! No one's had a more interesting career than Nic Cage. And he's still got the goods (see David Gordon Green's Joe).
JI: Cage definitely can still bring it, the problem is he's become such a joke to most people it feels like he can't break that persona even when he does get a really good role/performance like Joe.
ND: I'm ready for a Cage Renaissance. We can call it the CageWakening. Not as catchy as the McConaissance, I admit.
JI: I’m dying for it.
Tumblr media
JI: Along with you, I haven't seen Brokeback Mountain, nor sadly have I seen Capote -- huge PSH gap for me -- so I was just kind of stuck on my choice. The 40-Year-Old Virgin, while good, just drags on too long, which I guess has become a common complaint against Apatow projects.
Fun note about the Muppets, when I was a little kid my mom took me to Muppet Treasure Island and we had to leave halfway through because it scared me too much. I was probably three at the time, so I feel this shouldn't be a ding against me here.
ND: Muppet Treasure Island is a trash movie anyway. Barely canon.
JI: What method did you use to find all the movies from each year? I went through Wikipedia Year in Film for each year and it led to some fun surprises along the way. It made me look at someone like Chris Evans and wonder where his career would be now without Captain America? I mean he had to the two Fantastic Four flops, The Perfect Score (Scar Jo and Darius Miles!) and Cellular, a movie I didn’t even know existed.
ND: Don't forget the other Chris Evans' classic, 2009's Push, whose biggest claim to fame is getting Liongate to actually title a film Precious: Based on the Novel "Push" by Sapphire to avoid confusion.
JI: I didn't know Push existed either. Man, he better be thanking Marvel every single day.
ND: I too used good ole Wikipedia as my aid, though for my all-time favorites (Eternal Sunshine, In Bruges, Goodfellas), I plugged them in an left them there -- no use looking for anyone to dethrone them. I also looked at the lists of film critics I trust to maybe jog my memory on things I might have glossed over, which was the case for Wong Kar-wai's In the Mood For Love, one of my favorite recent discoveries that just happened to be released in a very weak year. And that got me thinking of other foreign films I love that might have been omitted on Wikipedia, like Eric Rohmer's A Summer's Tale. I’m the first to admit that these are my token pretentious picks, but they are both lovely little talky films that find relatable drama in human emotional, which is my cinematic wheelhouse (see: Linklater).
Tumblr media
ND: I need to hear the Paul story. A Pegg/Frost movie without Edgar Wright? I saw it and remember liking it fine but forgot all about it the minute I left the theater.
JI: Paul is a mix of a connection I have due to seeing a free early screening of it at Temple with our mutual friend Jason "Ball is Life" Quint and winning a poster at said screening and that 2011 is kind of a weak year. The year of The Artist! Also, I just really liked Paul's cast, Frost and Pegg are always great together along with Jason Bateman and Bill Hader and it just hit a lot of the right notes for me in an exceptionally weak year for truly outstanding movies.
ND: I mean, I picked The Muppets for 2011, so I can't knock an unconventional selection.
JI: Since its early into 2017, did you have any other real contenders for this year's movies or was it hands down Get Out? It was a very close race for me between Get Out and John Wick 2 but ultimately went John Wick 2 because its so rewatchable. I saw it opening weekend twice, back-to-back nights. Only other movie I've seen from this year is Kong: Skull Island, which was good but not close to the level of those two for me.
Tumblr media
ND: I originally wasn't going to pick a 2017 movie for the same reason you mentioned: the sample size just isn't big enough yet. It's unlikely Get Out will be my favorite of the year when it's all said and done, but it definitely stands out in a typically weak January-March. Logan got some consideration; it plays more like a western than a superhero movie, and any departure from the comic book formula is welcomed. I enjoyed Kong just fine but it's still a ways off from "best." I have yet to hop aboard the John Wick bandwagon. I'm sure I'll enjoy the ride once I'm there.
You're successive screening of John Wick 2 reminded me of a similar experience from my childhood, coincidentally with another Keanu movie. I saw a matinee of Hardball with my grandfather one Saturday afternoon, only to find out afterwards that my friends were going to see it that night. I didn't even like it that much, but I didn't want to be left out either. I can't recall if I've ever gone for a rewatch on back-to-back nights, though the odds are strong it happened during one of my four theater viewings of the first Spider-Man. I was a strange teen.
JI: John Wick is a thrill ride you won't want to end. My situation with that was similar to yours with Hardball. Made plans for the Saturday showing with a friend but Friday afternoon another friend texted me wanting to go so I didn't want to flake on either and went twice. Did not regret my decision.
I got you beat! I saw the Spider-Man five times in theaters, which thinking about it now I don't know why I saw it that many times. I also saw Men in Black II five times in theaters thanks to my dad wanting to go that many times. Two very odd movies to see that many times.
ND: Who knew we had so many uber-specific things in common. I can feel our friendship growing by the minute.
JI: As we're winding down on our actual lists, what movies are you most looking forward to for the rest of the year? For me right now Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and The Last Jedi are at the top for me. Dunkirk could be interesting but its tough to get hyped over a movie with a tone like that, especially during July rather than the expected December release. The Dark Tower should be good especially with Elba and McConaughey, but I didn't read the books so I don't have a built in excitement for it like others likely will. A few other interesting ones should be the next Kingsman movie, I thought the first one was really fun and the new IT. I loved the TV miniseries as a kid and am interested to see how they can possibly top Tim Curry as Pennywise. And of course there's the usual slate of sequels coming this year. Did you know that Bad Moms is not only getting a sequel but a spin-off as well with Bad Dads, both coming out in 2017?
ND: As far as blockbusters go, Guardians and The Last Jedi shouldn't disappoint. I didn't love Rogue One but very much enjoyed The Force Awakens, and I trust Rian Johnson even more than J.J. Abrams to carry the torch. Blade Runner 2049 looks incredible -- Villeneuve can do no wrong. Dunkirk looks good, though I've been lukewarm on Nolan's recent efforts. I'm tempering my expectations for The Dark Tower, considering how rocky preproduction has been. It would be a shame to waste such a great cast. Despite Bad Moms earning me some valuable points in last summer's Fantasy Box Office League, I will not be indulging in their further money grabs.
Digging a little deeper, the trailer for Martin McDonagh's latest, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, just dropped and looks like a blast. It's been five years since our last McDonagh, and I'm hopeful this is more In Bruges than Seven Psychopaths (which I still liked).
Tumblr media
ND: We're getting another Alex Garland/Oscar Isaac collaboration in Annihilation, and if it's anywhere near as good as Ex Machina, I'm all-in. Destin Daneil Cretton is releasing his long-awaited follow-up to 2012's outstanding Short Term 12 with The Glass Castle, also starring Brie Larson. And don't look now, but it looks like we're getting a Paul Thomas Anderson/Daniel Day-Lewis reunion next Oscar season. Huzzah.
JI: Ahh yes PTA and DDL reuniting for a movie about 50's era London fashion. I know it won't disappoint but so oddly specific.
ND: Is there anything else we need to discuss before wrapping up? Has this inspired you to catch up on any older flicks? I've got Brokeback Mountain and You Can Count on Me (Kenneth Lonergan's debut) queued up.
JI: It’s definitely made me want to go back and fill in a bunch of holes. Possibly starting with rounding out my PSH gaps with Magnolia and Capote.
One final note from me, Jackie Brown is criminally underrated and my favorite QT movie. He says anyone of this mindset doesn't really like his movies because he didn't write and to that I say, you don't determine my taste, Quentin.
ND: Jackie Brown was on my 1997 shortlist for sure. Under-the-radar-great.
Thanks for indulging me, John. I'm happy to get out of my head every now and then when it comes to my writing. Things like this are a ton of fun.
JI: This was fun. Hopefully we can collaborate again for another discussion. Maybe a post summer look back at surprise hits, biggest flops and how I managed to win the box office pool two years in a row (hopefully).
