"According to Downey, Feige brought up the idea that he could return as Victor Von Doom, the iconic Fantastic Four villain who is traditionally an adversary of Reed Richards. 'I looked into this character, and I was like, 'Wow,' Downey said. Later on, he goes, 'Let's get Victor Von Doom right. Let's get that right.'
The 'Oppenheimer' star described this as an effort to 'not go backwards' and 'continue to beat expectations.'"
Wow, tell me, RDJ, when you were looking into Doom, did it ever cross your mind that this character is Romani? And that you're not? Seems to contradict with your whole "get that right" and "not go backwards" thing

I can’t believe we are living in the timeline where a gory Seth Rogen produced show made a better adaptation of the Superior Iron Man than the MCU did! 😭😭😭

this is genuinely how I feel every time they make a new marvel movie now . every time I check in it’s worse. then I learn more about marvel before like how Scarlet Witch was actually supposed to be Romani and I didn’t even KNOW that because the whitewashing runs so deep. They’re making my favorite man into inverted palette iron man part 2 I need a fucking cigarette

I've just received my first actual news (as opposed to olds, which I see constantly while looking for stuff that's actually about Supernatural) from the Destiel meme. Milestone/rite of passage/bingo card cross!
It would not have been my first choice of how to learn the news. BBC News website, thou failed me sorely over my morning coffee today. Do the dance of shame. The Tumblr meme out-reported you on critical world events, here.
The "How are they going to recover the plotline and momentum after investing heavily in Kang/the multiverse then ditching the actor on whom it all pivots," question has been resoundingly answered between this and the ending of Loki.
Tumblr media
Well played, MCU. Well played. I did NOT see that coming. Doctor Doom, yes. RDJ, nope. I did not see that coming. I bet that hall at Comic Con was the best screaming riot since Hiddleston did his thing in 2013.

Welcome back Robert Downey Jr.

rdj coming back to the mcu as doctor doom has got to be one of the most ludicrous, desperate, lame things that could have possibly happened here. how desperate, that they recast someone who had the best run, a ten year run, with a fulfilling arc, he left and won an Oscar. but to come back now, to fulfil another iconic role that could have made someone else’s career. It’s pathetic. The mcu is pathetic to pander to the Rdj/Tony stark fans who will now never shut up about “the mcu has been saved!”. nail in the coffin. And don’t even get me started on the use of “you either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain.” cause a lot of fuckers out here are using it but not looking at it at the right level.

okay but in what other cinematic universe has a ship (ironstrange) been blown to smithereens with the death of one character (tony stark), only for the actor to be recast as another character in the same universe (doctor doom) who also happens to have insane chemistry with the other character in the previous ship (doctor strange)??

So, my biggest problem with the MCU multiverse is that they’re using it as a tool to introduce huge characters instead of just working said characters into the MCU naturally. Like, okay, I’m fine with Deadpool and the Fox X-men being done this way; this lets them send that universe out with a bang (a la Deadpool and Wolverine) and leaves the MCU free to introduce 616 versions of the X-men later in a passing of the torch sort of way down the line. But the Fantastic Four, Silver Surfer, Galactus, and possibly Doctor Doom all being variants from another universe who will presumably relocate to 616 at some point? I’m not a fan of it. I feel like the MCU x-men and the fantastic four should be natives of earth 616 instead of dislocated from their home universe.
I also worry that making Doom the villain of Avengers 5-6 as a last minute replacement for Kang would forcibly peak one of the best comic book villains way too soon, and I don’t like that they are basically doing it instead of just recasting Kang, who they have actually been building up over the last few years.

I think it's a stupid decision to completely forget Kang and replace him with Doctor Doom
Doom is a major threat yes but imo he is a significantly lesser threat compared to Thanos and Kang
Why couldn't they just recast Kang? They did it with Bruce, they did it with Rhodey, they did it with Red Skull hell they recasted Cassie in Quantumania
So why not recast Kang? There's plenty of black male actors who can play him far better than JM did like Denzel Washington
Do you know how awesome it would've been to see Denzel as Kang?
They could've recasted Kang it's not a situation like Chadwick Bozeman and Black Panther but it's obvious that even that doesn't really matter because William Hurt has been dead for two years and they replaced him with Harrison Ford
Now you're probably thinking "Well, wouldn't it be weird if Kang suddenly looked different from the last time we saw him?" Not really nobody questioned how Bruce changed between The Incredible Hulk to The Avengers or how Rhodey changed between Iron Man 1 to Iron Man 2 or how Cassie changed between Endgame to Quantumania and nobody is gonna question how Ross changed from Civil War to Brave New World
Not to mention by retconning Kang they basically made Loki and Quantumania redundant
Literally if Quantumania and Loki were there to set up Kang as the next big bad and now they're not even using Kang anymore then Quantumania and Loki were just a waste of everyone's time

Unpopular Phase 4 & 5 Opinions
Quantumania is the worst Phase 4/5 movie. And it wasn’t even because “kang got beat by ants.” (I liked kang in this movie). It’s just that the Spy Kids aesthetic & bad acting & overall weird vibes just weren’t for me.
Love and Thunder is no worse than Ragnarok. I would argue that it’s better in a lot of ways, actually. I really liked it.
Taika Waititi ruined thor with bad humour all the way back in Ragnarok tbh, but y’all weren’t complaining about it then 😒.
BuckySarah is better than sambucky every day of the week.
The Marvels was a good ass movie & they’re one of my favorite teams in the mcu. I’ll never forgive cbm sites & online dudebros for killing the hype from the moment the film was announced.
I adore America Chavez & Kamala Kahn and I want to see them in everything. They must be protected at all costs.
Multiverse of Madness had shitty characterisation & basically just copy-pasted the ‘grief made me go off the deep end & hurt people, then I realised and stopped myself’ storyline from Wandavision… but Wanda was extremely selfish & apathetic to other people’s suffering from the time she was introduced in the mcu. MoM didn’t make her like that.
Wanda should’ve been looking for Vision (her actual real life boyfriend whom she spent years with irl) in MoM instead of the kids that weren’t even real that she spent like a week using as characters in her sitcom.
Making everyone forget Peter Parker wasn’t profound or poetic in any way- it was just frustrating and needlessly cruel.
I’m begging marvel to understand that heroes don’t have to be in constant suffering to be heroic & villains don’t have to sacrifice themselves to achieve redemption. Let characters heal and atone, you absolute weirdos.
What If…? is the most boring show ever. I’d rather watch Secret Invasion or She-Hulk.
Season 2 of Loki is, in a cinematic & artistic sense, the best marvel project period.
Loki season 1 was meh- more of a fun au than anything because his characterisation kinda sucked. Season 2 fixed it, though, and made it way easier for me to incorporate this version of Loki back into the larger mcu.
Having Steve stay in the past with Peggy was stupid af.
I don’t hate Peggy (or Captain Carter), though. I actually think she’s pretty cool.
I don’t really love Steve. He’s arrogant & they never really let him have flaws & something about him being a perfect metaphor for the American military industrial complex (and marvel painting that as a good thing) doesn’t sit right with me.
The Illuminati got done dirty and the only reason they went down so fast was because Wanda had all that plot armor.
I thought the retcon of having Wanda be “destined” to become the Scarlet Witch since birth was an annoying cop-out. Her powers originating from being experimented on with an infinity stone was way more interesting.
Loki & Wanda have almost the exact same powers.
Nebula deserved a bigger rule in killing Thanos & everything else moving forward.
I love Kathryn Newton but her acting as Cassie Lang was the worst acting I’ve ever seen in the mcu, like it was outrageously bad.
I’m glad Sam is the new Captain America and not Bucky.
The fact that Bucky probably isn’t gonna be one of Thee lead characters in the upcoming avengers movies feels sick and twisted.
Secret Invasion was actually passable until the G’iah scene at the end. That ruined it. And Nick Fury deserved way better for his solo series.
Kang is so much more interesting than Doctor Doom. I really hope they just recast him.
Carol Danvers does NOT deserve the hate she gets.
I actually disliked Carol until The Marvels. That movie made me a stan.
The way people treat Monica as Wanda’s little inferior pet creation or smth & then brag about it is uhh very sus.
I don’t like sylvie (bc she’s an amalgamation of 3 different comic characters- which killed any hopes of them appearing individually in the mcu, the creators used her existence to butcher Loki’s genderfluid rep, & she was written poorly) & I HATE sylki (bc it’s weird & unnecessary).
Marvel isn’t dead. I actually love where they’re taking things. But that’s just me.

I just don't get this at all. There are a thousand other actors to be Doctor Doom. //
It is so stupid. Doesn't Doctor Doom have Romani heritage and isn't that a big part of his origin story? Marvel missed an opportunity to tell a really compelling and representational story, imo.
And of course money talks at the end of the day. After winning an Oscar for Oppenheimer and getting an Emmy nomination for The Sympathizer, I thought RDJ was going in a different direction. But they probably made him an offer he couldn't refuse. I can see Chris and Scarlett returning in some capacity too. It's inevitable, atp.
I also have Marvel burnout. After Spiderman NWH (which I adored), it hasn't been the same to me. With the new characters introduced and all the Disney+ shows, it's really tough to follow all the story threads. It seems more like a chore now and not enjoyable at all.
I only care about Thunderbolts currently because I like the cast. I don't have any interest in other upcoming Marvel projects.
I think one of the biggest mistakes Marvel made was trying to tie together series and movies. It alienated a lot of people who didn't want to sign up for Disney+. Even having read what happened in Wandavision, because I don't have Disney+, I was still slightly confused by Dr. Strange 2. The switch over of Wanda to a villain in that movie was clunky and very hamfisted, because they were assuming everyone watched the series before seeing the movie.
But, with RDJ, I assume he also made this decision to come back because he will now get to play a villain. I think that was probably very tempting, after playing a hero for so long. And Doom can get very dark, given what storyline they choose.
(And I guess the Doom storyline is how they're getting rid of Kang now. Why didn't they just recast?)

Ranking how much I believe series 14 theories I’ve seen floating around:
Ruby Sunday is doomed by the narrative: 9/10
No way she isn’t dying or suffering a fate worse than death. “I’ll protect her Carla” you already know he is going to fail 🫡🫡
Ruby isn’t human/Ruby is the same species as the Doctor: 6/10
I think it would make a lot of sense to parallel the Doctor’s story, explain why she has no biological family, and it could even be foreshadowed with her turning into a different species when she stepped on a butterfly
Ruby is the daughter of any previous female character on the show: 4/10
I’m not feeling this one but I wouldn’t rule it out entirely. Would be really fun to see whatever previous character they decide is her mother if this is true.
Jonathan Groff’s character is Jack Harkness in an actor recast: 1/10
I really don’t think he is. Considering I can’t read RTD’s mind, I can’t say no for certain, but it’s very narrow-minded to think the Doctor can only have homoerotic tension with like 4 guys ever. Expand your minds

Genuinely so upset by the Doctor Doom news. I was already starting to get bummed out by Marvel movie castings lately because it's no longer people who are good for the part and instead famous people that we already like but Doom is my favorite Marvel character of all time. To say he was the ONE character that I NEEDED to be played by somebody who was just going to embody that character would be a massive understatement, and they fumbled the bag so unbelievably hard.
I get that Marvel is probably just scrambling to find a new villain for their new epic saga that's already pretty bad on its own merits (except for Guardians 3) and they don't want to use Kang because their actor was just found guilty of a crime. Personally, I would think they could just swallow their pride and recast the character who's apparently so important to the saga - especially since he only showed up in like 2 episodes of TV and 1 movie - but that's neither here nor there.
I think this and the tiny amount of Deadpool & Wolverine that I've seen are just adding to how burnt out I am of Marvel and their quest to turn cinema from an environment of well made pieces of art to 2.5 hours of jingling keys in front of the audience. I feel like it's good to have faith James Gunn will not do those things just on the strength of Guardians of the Galaxy and Peacemaker but those concerns have to be out there.

Kevin Feige and the Russos would rather bring RDJ as Doctor Doom instead of just recast Kang or do right by Sharon Carter.

Robert Downey Jr Returns to the MCU
This was probably the most unexpected news to wake up to. In all fairness when it first came across the timeline it didn't seem real. When you keep scrolling and every major news outlet reports the same news, then it begins to sink in. Robert Downey Jr is back in the MCU as Doctor Doom.
Obviously, the initial feeling is shock and complete awe. Followed by a series of questions. Why RDJ? Why not recast Kang? Why pivot and abandon a storyline they seemed heavily invested in?
Let's take a look at all of those. They chose Robert Downey Jr for the shock value. It was the easiest choice to get everyone talking. Good or bad, the talk of the town is Marvel yet again. It seems like that is what Kevin Feige wants these days. People simply just talk about the Marvel brand.
Tumblr media
Recasting Kang would have been my choice in this matter. Majors may be a phenomenonal talent and hard to replace but absolutely no one would have falted Marvel for making that move. Everyone felt it was the safe move to go ahead and pull it off. The pivot to me while a good one story wise definitely makes me feel like the last 2 to 3 years of Marvel dropping Kang references was a complete and utter waste. As it now is.
This is a pivot and a shocking one so that people ultimately forget Kang was named dropped in every project. The casting of RDJ is not what I dislike. The complete pivot away is what I dislike the most. Casting RDJ as Doom is a great way to bring him back and keep the fans thrilled. Having invested in a lot of the Kang stuff and now seeing them just pull the plug on, it stings a little. Not because RDJ can't make this something special, but because I never envisoned a big studio like Marvel ditching a story all together.
Tumblr media
It seems like this is the way of the future for Marvel. We almost always knew RDJ would be back at some point as a variant or a cameo. In terms of him as Doom, I like it. It just feels like storywise they have a lot of catching up to in order for it all to make sense. The biggest question now becomes: Can Marvel pull this off? This is a story that, over the next 2 years, will definitely be worth revisiting as time passes.
