I believe the wardrobe tests were conducted during the last days/weeks of production of Rebel Without A Cause.  Jimmy wasn’t terribly happy being pulled away from his work with Nicholas Ray and he rather let it show at the infamous press conference with Giant producer George Stevens, where he turned up late and surly, refusing to take his glasses off.
