Scargiver is not Zack Snyder's worst film. Which is about as positive of a review as I'll give it.
I could instantly tell the Zack Snyder's Rebel Moon Part Two: The Scargiver was going to be better than the first film by the sheer fact that I was able to start fixing the movie in my head about a 3rd of the way into the film. I could instantly tell this was going to be another bad movie by the fact that I hadn't even made it halfway through the thing before I started constructing a coherent narrative out of it in my mind. And this was while the movie was still going.
My big gripe with Scargiver is that we spent the worst two hours and thirteen minutes of my life in the previous film putting together the world's most forgettable seven samurai, only for this movie to give us that entire backstory in a five minute flashback scene that only feels overdone if you don't live in the Zack Snyder universe where Rebel Moon: Child of Fire exists as a film approved for release.
The meat of the movie itself, for as blatantly Snyder presents the "What if I made Star Wars and Warhammer 40k kiss eachother?" art design, is at least visually engaging in ways that really appeal to 14 year old boys. Lots of explosions and slow motion, as well as pretty gonzo ship designs. Zack is nothing if not notorious for hammering out a handful of very charismatic sequences under a flimsy plot and calling it a finished film. The production design, sets, costumes and action setpieces all reflect this. Which is more than I can say for the first film, which was supremely a nothing movie.
This is not to say that Zack's back, but that Scargiver treads lightly into the classic Snyder campiness with some visually fantastic sequences and design choices that engaged me more than anything in Rebel Moon pt. 1 other than the fun alien at the bar. An entire orchestra wearing black hoods like some sort of sci-fi fantasy Magritte painting. A sideways battle fought on a listing spaceship. Cool spider tank mechas. Except you still have to fix the movie in your head.
This is a film with a cast of largely unremarkable characters, forgettable plotlines, and trite narratives. The performances range from "forced" to "nonexistent" and the worldbuilding, plot, and writing do very little to help the actors out. The one true merit this film has is Zack Snyder's enthusiasm for the project (ok, also his forearms), but that doesn't make up for what is a truly forgettable movie. The studios were right for turning down this project for 30 years.
In order to make the film good, Zack should've made the first film into a snappy montage, thinning out the main cast to a select few characters that are interesting enough to care about, and narrowing the scope of Scargiver to something manageable and engaging. I would've killed to see a small group of mercenaries with traumatic backgrounds take on the empire in defense of a small space-viking village. Which is what this film really is at the heart of things, just bloated beyond recognition. Here I am fixing the film in my head again. I may still be Snyder's strongest soldier, but I won't defend this one. Scargiver is by no means a must-see.
Verdict: It wasn't as bad as the first one!

I watched Rebel Moon: Part Two – The Scargiver.
The film felt less “awkward” to me than Part One which, although I agree had flaws, I enjoyed and thought was unreasonably criticized. In my opinion, Part Two’s pacing was better, it was more suspenseful, more “epic”, and there were a few rousing moments. That said, it makes sense since A Child of Fire was mostly about recruiting and introducing a team of warriors while this movie is about them actually fighting.
It was already obvious to me that a lot of work had gone into this project, but then watching Creating a Universe - The Making of Rebel Moon confirmed this. They spent so much time building this world, its people, cultures, creatures, technologies, languages, etc. It feels like everything and everyone we see on screen was carefully crafted and has a detailed backstory. Also, they built a spaceship and an entire village, dug a river, created a field, organically grew wheat, and had the actors actually harvest it in the film! I think that’s impressive.
Zack Snyder had been building this universe in his mind for years, drew his own storyboards, and even assembled custom camera lenses because he had a very precise idea of what he wanted the movie to look like. It’s heartwarming to see that people (cast and crew) who worked with him defend the project and say how invested, respectful, and passionate the director was. For him and for the many equally creative, talented, and dedicated teams involved, I’m glad the artistic vision they shared at least had a chance to become a reality.
As imperfect (but honestly far from being as bad as people keep saying) as what we’ve seen so far may be, I still believe the saga has a lot of potential. We’ll only be able to properly judge it after seeing the long, R-rated versions of the films anyway (and hopefully a Part Three)...
In the end, though, I realize what I truly care about, more than how the story of Rebel Moon is told, is its universe as a whole, but also the passion of the many people who put their hearts and souls into bringing it to life to such a high level of detail. It exists, and as someone who’s been building many worlds in my own mind since I was a child, that makes me happy.
#go zack & co. live your dreams.#do it for all of us#rebel moon#the scargiver#rebel moon part two the scargiver#rebel moon part 2#I recommend the short documentary because what they did is truly impressive#zack snyder#possibly one of the few genuinely wholesome people in the film industry#if that’s true it feels like he 'deserves' this you know?#rebel moon however doesn’t deserve the hate

Watched Rebel Moon Part Two The Scargiver
I enjoyed it but also can't wait to see all of this being a more over the top crazy freakness heavy metal as intended. Like the relationship between the rebels already and these characters tho, so more time with them is very welcomed. I just wish everyone could handle seeing film violence showing the actual consequences, anyway R rated is gonna be there for me thanks to this compromise.

Rebel Moon 2 was insane. Zack Snyder is a madman even when he is restrained. There is a cut between triumph and tragedy in this film that makes it stay with you even after the credits and not only that, but the way he makes a small village of farmers feel much bigger than an entire galaxy is also amazing. Such a human, mythical and entertaining film.
