i present to you a list of things that could have happened if the writers of the originals did their jobs right:
hope not having to leave NOLA, and getting a chance to actually live with both her parents.
klaus learning to braid so that hope can have the prettiest hairstyle at school. he ends up learning soo much that even though he's the "big bad hybrid" many of hope's friends come over early to get their hair braided by him and he's more than happy to do it bc it makes his little girl happy.
klaus teaching hope how to paint and having many many many paintings together (soo many till the point that hayley has to dedicate a separate room in the compound just for them. they never once throw any of hope's artwork away)
when hayley gets annoyed at the mischief hope and kol get into, they take a very very long road trip until hayley finally caves and comes looking for them and then they together hide until klaus tracks them down (its a game they all secretly love)
once hope suggested to kol that they could wear suits on halloween to look like elijah and since then it became a running joke that every halloween hope and kol would wear ONLY suits and act like elijah for the whole day. (elijah pretends to hate it but he secretly loves it)
hope coming to rebekah and freya for advice about her crushes and making her aunts promise not to tell hayley and klaus about it.
awkward as f*ck family dinners where hope brings the person she's dating home and klaus silently glaring at them with steak knives in his hand while hayley tries to diffuse the tension.
the entire original family plotting how to murder a teenager without hope knowing when she has her first heartbreak.
hope learning about family game nights from one of her (maybe human) friends at school, and then trying it out at home only to realise the mikaelson siblings are competitive as f*ck. (klaus almost daggered kol again over monopoly.)
klaus and hayley stalking hope when she sneaks out of the house in the middle of the night only to find out that she's feeding a stray cat in the neighbourhood (they end up adopting the cat).

Hope definitely could've used the Mikaelson Mansion in Mystic Falls since she was there but its kinda funny the reason why she couldn't is because Rick Ross bought that mansion many years ago lol IRL. Like the mansion is just never brought up again. I get why the Mikaelsons in TO didn't mention that home that much but Hope living in MF should've known about it.
If anything Hayley should've been given that mansion as Hope's mother, as sole caregiver during that period of her life (all of them but). Then thats opens up another can of worms. Hayley leaving Hope after being possessed is crazy as fuck lol and unlike her.

From the Secret Garden sequel I've been reading, a statement from an adult Colin:
"I suppose I could spend my life hating my father for choosing to keep me in solitude for the first ten years of my life, but I don't see a point in it. It ended, so what of it? And, in his own way, I know he only wanted to protect me, albeit in the extreme."
Let's unpack this absolute mess of misunderstanding.
There was a reference earlier in this sequel to "rules" enforced by Colin's father that confined him indoors, so it seems to be the case that this author is under the impression that Colin's pre-garden way of life was directly imposed upon him by his father. I'm guessing that this assumption comes from any of various film adaptations, which have a habit of completely misunderstanding the nature of Colin's issues--because the original text does not support this. At all.
Mr. Craven has failed as a parent by rejecting his son and being absent and emotionally neglectful. There's no question of that. If Colin were to have any angst directed at his father, it should be for those particular failures.
But the original book indicates that Mr. Craven is not the one directly making the decisions about Colin's care and daily life. In fact, he seems to be rather vague on what exactly is going on with his son.
He had not meant to be a bad father, but he had not felt like a father at all. He had supplied doctors and nurses and luxuries, but he had shrunk from the mere thought of the boy and had buried himself in his own misery. The first time after a year's absence he returned to Misselthwaite and the small miserable looking thing languidly and indifferently lifted to his face the great gray eyes with black lashes round them, so like and yet soĀ horribly unlike the happy eyes he had adored, he could not bear the sight of them and turned away pale as death. After that he scarcely ever saw him except when he was asleep, and all he knew of him was that he was a confirmed invalid, with a vicious, hysterical, half-insane temper. He could only be kept from furies dangerous to himself by being given his own way in every detail.
This is not a description of a father who is personally involved in and making "rules" about how his child is being raised.
Mrs. Medlock even expects Mr. Craven to be unaware of pretty significant things like Colin's extreme aversion to going outdoors.
"[...] You never knew, sir, perhaps, that out of doors he never would let himself be taken. The things we've gone through to get him to go out in his chair would leave a body trembling like a leaf. He'd throw himself into such a state that Dr. Craven said he couldn't be responsible for forcing him. [...]"
Note that no one is actively preventing Colin from going outdoors. He himself is the one who objects to it and refuses to cooperate, and since his caregivers regard giving him his own way as the highest priority, even more than making sure that he follows sensible medical advice that will help him, that's the end of that.
When Mary meets Colin, they have a talk about why he was kept a secret from her. And the answer isn't that his father keeps him locked up.
"[...] Did no one ever tell you I had come to live here?" He was still fingering the fold of her wrapper, but he began to look a little more as if he believed in her reality. "No," he answered. "They daren't." "Why?" asked Mary. "Because I should have been afraid you would see me. I won't let people see me and talk me over." "Why?" Mary asked again, feeling more mystified every moment. "Because I am like this always, ill and having to lie down. My father won't let people talk meĀ over either. The servants are not allowed to speak about me. If I live I may be a hunchback, but I shan't live. My father hates to think I may be like him." "Oh, what a queer house this is!" Mary said. "What a queer house! Everything is a kind of secret. Rooms are locked up and gardens are locked upā€”and you! Have you been locked up?" "No. I stay in this room because I don't want to be moved out of it. It tires me too much."
It's made clear that Mr. Craven forbids gossip about himself and his family, but there's never any indication that he personally is hiding Colin away. That is Colin's choice, motivated by his deep sense of shame and fear of prying eyes, and since he's surrounded by people who have to obey his every wish, he remains isolated from anything outside the confines of his bedroom. His arc is not one of getting up the courage to violate the suffocating rules imposed upon him by others that prevent him from leading a full life, but rather working past his own mental blocks that his caregivers have enabled for so long.
Reducing his situation to a sort of enforced invalidhood/isolation at his father's behest is a complete misreading that removes a lot of complexity and nuance from Colin's character that should carry over to a teenage/young adult version of him, and that's just one of many ways in which this sequel did not effectively connect to the themes and characterization of the original book.

no matter how strange marcel and rebekah is they could have easily fixed it with having rebekah be daggered while marcel was being raised sure it'd still be weird but it wouldn't be As weird.
#marcel gerard#rebekah mikaelson#idk if it's anti her but like .... mmmm.#here's the thing i think it's weird and strange and odd whatever whatever#in a normal family it'd be illegal#considering these people are immortal and have all types of inappropriate relationships#it's not AS big of a deal but the defining factor#is truly that she was there while he was being raised.#it'd be one thing if she woke up and klaus had this prodigy / protege he called his son who she found herself attracted to#(still weird as fuck)#like it would arguably make the story better even#but no she watched him grow up as her brother's son so there's no way to detach that from their story#and it makes sense for a mikaelson of all people#to have a fucked up relationship like that#but it's just SO UNNECESSARY???#between all the brothers fucking the same women#+ someone's brother dating their baby mama#+ the immortal vampires dating teenagers#the weirdest relationships are still the ones with the weirdly human age gaps#if marcel and rebekah met when marcel was a newly turned vampire. one thing.#but it's like. caroline and alaric's brand of nasty.#that girl was his student who was Forced to have his babies and he fell in love with her#that's by far one of the most frowned upon relationships in this series FORRRRRRRRR a reason#be so honest i would not gaf about the klaus' son aspect of marbekah#if she didn't know him as a kid/watch him grow up#like i'd just take it as. oh okay yeah that makes sense for klaus and rebekah's dynamic#tvdu text#idk my tag for that#tvdu op#it's like edward/bella weirdness vs jacob/renesmee weirdness

Day 24: Struck By Lightning
I'm finally all caught up! And with a week left, lol. But here, this is part of no established AU, and never will be, I have full confidence that something this stupid probably happened in canon.
Enjoy!
ā€œKol,ā€ Elijah called, exasperated. ā€œKol!ā€
His younger brother (youngest, now, and didnā€™t that just hurt Elijahā€™s heart? Little Henrik, deadā€¦) ignored him, instead trying to climb higher in the tree, his sword held above him. At the rate, Elijah felt heā€™d have to climb after him, which he did not want to do.
ā€œStop encouraging him!ā€ Elijahā€™s head whipped around to their siblings, Niklaus and Rebekah both laughing on the ground as they watched Kol.
The idea was either Niklausā€™ or Kolā€™s, originally. Elijah hadnā€™t been paying enough attention at the time, braiding Rebekahā€™s hair for her, trusting that Finn would be able to look after their brothers for five minutes. Except that apparently, Finn had done his own thing, and left their more chaotic siblings together.
Hence why Kol was now climbing the tallest tree they could find, covered in as much metal as they could find on such short notice. Where heā€™d even gotten half of it, Elijah wasnā€™t sure. But what he was certain of was that just because their mother had said they were immortal, it didnā€™t mean they should be testing it out like this!
It was a heavy storm, too. Elijah was certain it was going to cause lightning, and thunder, and the danger only increased his efforts to get his brother down, before he got struck. Of course, it seemed that being struck by lightning was Kolā€™s goal, as he climbed higher, waving his sword around.
Honestly, sometimes Elijah wondered why he didnā€™t just leave them to their own devices. Right, because they would come running to find him soon enough, having messed up enough that they needed him to fix it for them. His siblings should be lucky that he loved them, Elijah thought, because theyā€™d be in big trouble if he didnā€™t.
Trouble like being hit by their brother whilst they were busy laughing at him, as was what happened now. Kol got his wish, the lightning striking him before Elijah could even draw breath to yell at him again. He flew from the tree, the metal surrounding him sparking, little bits flicking off of him, as Kol landed right on top of his siblings.
Neither Rebekah nor Niklaus were laughing much now, Elijah noted in the back of his head. They were yelling a lot more instead, both at Kol, and for Elijah, so he could be mad at Kol.
Although why they seemed to think they were off the hook for this, when Elijah knew full well that they had been egging Kol on with this idiot plan of his, he had no idea. Even if it had backfired on them now, with Kol slamming into them, the electricity from the lightning still flying off of him, zapping their siblings, Elijah saw no reason to exclude them from his disappointment.
They were old enough to know better, in his opinion. Suddenly being invulnerable to the stupid things their brains could come up with was not a reason to do it, and Elijah told them so. If heā€™d obeyed the stupid thoughts in his head when he was their age, like they were doing now, Kol would have been tossed into the fire, and Rebekahā€™s hair would be much shorter (from the same fire, incidentally enough).
He could feel Finnā€™s smirk, despite his older brother not actually saying anything. The way their younger siblingsā€™ faces started scowling at something behind Elijah gave it away, and so, he promptly included Finn in his scoldings as well.
After all, heā€™d trusted Finn with Niklaus and Kol, and had expected his brother to keep them out of trouble. And instead, what did Elijah find? Two idiots climbing a tree, and Finn was off writing love letters to Sage or something like that.
Elijah had managed to get Niklaus down, thankfully, but Kol had ignored him, and it was for this reason that he was getting the brunt of it. Not too much more than the others, though, Kol was still smoking after all, and a fall from that height couldnā€™t have been much fun, regardless of how immortal they were.
Finally, Elijah sent them off to think about their actions. It wasnā€™t much, but it did work on the younger ones, even though he knew Finn wouldnā€™t be taking it to heart. His older brother would be more than likely to compose more sonnets to Sage, instead of thinking about his actions, but Elijah couldnā€™t force him to do anything. It was the perils of being his younger brother, after all, despite all the responsibility he held in regards to the rest of the family.
Sometimes, Elijah really hated that heā€™d been born the second son, and that Finn held him accountable for things that happened before his birth. It would be a lot easier if Finn either listened to him, Elijah reckoned, or if his brother at least didnā€™t actively go against him whenever he could.
