Strange New Worlds lol
Listen, Star Trek, the whole point of Those Who Walk Away From Omelas is that it's a thought experiment based on killing one child being the only way to achieve utopia. Once you have another, freely available utopia that is literally the protagonist faction, it just gets a bit dumb.
Lindy Booth (OMG Librarians reunion with Rebecca Romijin wowwww): You don't understand, killing a little boy is the only way to maintain our idyllic existence.
Pike: Sounds like a skill issue. Why don't we just move you to another planet and give you a bunch of replicators? That way you could still have an idyllic existence and you don't have to kill any kids.
Lindy Booth: But moving is such a hassle!
Pike: So now the conflict is that you're killing a child just to avoid a modest inconvenience? Seriously, it's the future. We can rebuild your entire city in like a week. Just say the word.
Lindy Booth: N-no... this is a moral dilemma... you can't solve it.
Kirk: Hey guys, know I'm supposed to be here in the timeline yet, but I live for this shit. Mr. Spock, target this society's primary computer and fire phasers.
Spock: lol
Kirk: Okay, now your moral dilemma is between dying in agony and improving your society. You're welcome.
Pike: You just broke the Prime Directive!
Kirk: What are you, a cop? Play my theme music!
*theme music plays as Kirk outies*

Hey!! Curious if you have seen Strang New World? I got back into Star Trek when I read your fic ages ago :)
I'm so glad you got back into Trek!
I have seen Strange New Worlds. In fact, watching SNW is what inspired me to finally finish that K/S fic I started writing in 2009. I'm very happy with the result.
I'm...not happy with SNW. I adore everything they're doing with Uhura; it's really what I've always wanted for her. I love a lot of the actors (though, unlike almost everyone on the internet, I find Anson Mount and Rebecca Romijin deeply uninspiring) and the ideas behind a lot of the characters.
What I don't like is the morality of the show, which is not as disgusting as Enterprise, but nothing is, so that's not saying much.
I'm also really fed up with how rampantly het it is; I'm tired of straight Trek; don't cite at me all the examples of Trek not being straight; I get them cited at me all the time; how do I convince the world that at this point, to satisfy me, Star Trek needs to be so queer that literally hetrosexuality is as unheard of in the Federation as currency?

Song of the Day #6:
'Keeping Secrets' by Rebecca Romijin, Tom Polce, and Kay Hanley.
youtube
No one can keep you small
Be bulletproof and ten feet tall
An island
Track 6 of 'Subspace Rhapsody', the Musical episode of 'Strange New Worlds'.
Fun fact: In the original series, there is an episode (made famous by the first interracial kiss on television, which William Shatner encouraged by refusing to cooperate with the directors, who wanted to film a version with the kiss, and a version without), called 'Plato's Stepchildren' (1968). In the episode, our favourite characters are forced into actions by people with psionic abilities, including Spock being forced to sing 'Maiden Wine' (which Leonard Nimoy actually composed himself!). (Semi related: 'Maiden Wine' always makes me think of 'Summer Wine' by Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazelwood, which deserves its own post.) This episode is the only other time Spock has sung in the show, and 'Subspace Rhapsody' is the first fully musical episode of Star Trek since its first airing in 1966.
Personal blurb: Look, I'm going to be honest. If I meet you in a corner of a bookshop and we start geeking out about musicals, this isn't the first, second, or seventeenth one that I'll bring up. The lyrics are not necessarily my preferred flavour (and there are some that I viscerally disagree with). That being said, I find the melodies exciting and invigorating enough that it's worth a listen to (or multiple listens to) on the road from one side of the country to the other. I feel the same way about 'The Unofficial Bridgerton Musical'. They are both fun, sweet, and simple. I have never actually watched the Star Trek episode (nor the Bridgerton show). Someone with whom I worked at the Renaissance Faire introduced it to me and I really liked the sound. I get the specific lyrics I shared here stuck in my head on a regular basis, including today, so now you can suffer with me.

Rights of Use Dream Cast
I got asked this morning about fan casting for Rights of Use, and I wanted to share.
Sarah Anderson, Maggie Rockefeller, Lauren - pick new actors. Give someone a break.
Speaker Andrew Rockefeller - Anson Mount (Pike on Strange New Worlds. Yes, I know it's lazy casting, but he'll do great. Right fatherly protective vibes.)
Senator Charles Stokley - Bernie Sanders but less frail -- Brent Spiner or Michael Dorn? I pictured someone wrinklier... Maybe Carmen Argenziano (while we're dreaming. See note on Cliff Simon.)
Colonel Renee Marshall - Amanda Tapping would be cool, though not at all who I had in mind.
Major Jo Patrick - (Aside from someone on the Cleveland Cocoction staff who would be perfect) Rebecca Romijin (Una on Strange New Worlds) (Tawny Newsome as back up choice, mostly because I'm having trouble giving her an Irish last name.)
Lt. Kyle Fairfeld - Anton Yelchin (Checkov in Star Trek 2009 - Dreaming here. See note on Cliff Simon.)
General Marshall/Kitchell - Richard Dean Anderson
Katorin/Setira - Mary Wiseman (Tilly on Discovery. Sure, she's way too young, so digitally age her up. It's fine. She's got the right energy. She's perfect.)
Cube Head - Jack Quaid (Boimler on Lower Decks/Strange New Worlds)
Benny-J - Eric Bana (Nero in Star Trek 2009)
Green Flame - Cliff Simon (Ba'al on Stargate SG-1--Look, none of this is happening, so there's no harm in picking amazing actors who died too young.)
Neith - younger Tilda Swinton, Emma Corrin (Cassandra in Deadpool and Wolverine)
Doppelganger and Serket - I'm really tempted to say Delia Rose Gooding, because she was such a fantastically menacing character in one of the altered-personality episodes of SNW, but this book is so white on the good guy side, I am not comfortable with POC actors for the bad guys who die in the end.
Amazing actors this book doesn't have roles for, but I'll keep in mind for future fan casts:
Tawny Newsome (Beckett Mariner on Lower Decks/Strange New Worlds)
Melissa Navia (Ortegas on Strange New Worlds)
Bodhrancomedy
Bonnie Gorton (computer in Prodigy/filk singer)
Noel Wells (Tendi on Lower Decks)(Actually, she might make a nice Sarah, though I didn't show Sarah quite this excitable.)
Delia Rose Gooding (Uhura on Strange New Worlds - what a phenomenal actor!)
Jordan Ifueko (Okay, this is the author of the amazing fantasy book Raybearer, and I've seen her reels as her characters. You can't tell me she wouldn't be an incredible actress...if she had the time for it.)
Sonequa Martin-Green (Michael Burnham on Discovery)
Babs Olusanmokun (Dr. M'Benga on Strange New Worlds)
Carol Kane (Pelia on Strange New Worlds) (Yes, I'm just going down the cast list and picking actors/characters I didn't get enough of.
Gia Sandhu (T'Pring on Strange New Worlds)
Gary Jones (Walter Harriman in SG-1)
Claudia Black (Vala Mal Doran in SG-1. Look, I've got a lot of women to staff in this series.)

My feelings on Mystique's appearance in the movies falls into three catagories. The first is "Holy shit she's naked, that's kind of terrifying", the second is "Holy shit she's naked, that's kind of hot" and the third is "Wait, is it really necessary for her to be naked?" Especially given how frustrating an experience that makeup must be.
If there's one thing I 100% believe in though, it's that Rebecca Romijin is far better at playing Mystique than Jennifer Lawrence. Which kinda brings be back to my first category. Rebecca makes Mystique scary as shit, with her sparse dialogue, sinister glares and actions, and her ability to play anyone without people next to her none the wiser. And whole blue reptilian appearance just...eugh, it can really be freaky. Especially in this first X-Men movie.
Oh, hi, Mystique. I legit forgot they did that to you in these movies.
I really like Mystique's fluttering scales as she shapeshifts. But also. Wow. Hollywood really took this character as an opportunity to just have a supermodel walk naked around the film set for months "for business reasons".
Tumblr media
This character is fucking stylish. The white of her outfit contrasts fantastically with the blue of her skin, while the red and yellows of her head stand out and draw attention upwards.
The filmmakers seriously went, "Okay, but what if she was naked all the time?" and somehow not one person involved in the project was like wait, why are we doing Tomb Raider Nude Codes to our comic book movie?
Because. Hollywood and women.
Anyways, Mystique did nothing wrong. Senator Kelly is calling for ethnic cleansing; Kidnapping him was an act of self-defense.

I don’t think Jim Kirk will be main cast unless snw is not cancelled by the time the plot hits 2265. The only alternative scenario I see is him joining a bit early as XO if una gets her own command shortly before pike leaves as a training period for him. But I don’t think they’ll do that either unless it’s a “Rebecca romijin has some unbreakable contract with another production and has to be written out” or it’s literally the last season and they are just resolving plot points.
Does anyone else wonder if at some point SNW will make James Kirk part of the main cast of SNW? I assume the gradual increase of his presence means he will only feature more often, not less. They explicitly had Spock state in 2.09 that there are 200 crew members on the Enterprise (compared to the 400+ in TOS).
Is it possible that at some point, they absorb the complement of another ship? Like, say, the Farragut? It wouldn't contradict canon to say that James Kirk lived on the Enterprise before he took command. Many of us assumed he took command when he joined but that's never canonically stated, is it? Do correct me if I'm wrong. The only thing I can see as a general issue is if Kirk joins the Enterprise, it's effectively a demotion. But they made it so that he has months to go before his promotion to XO becomes official, anyway. I'm not sure what they're doing.
