on the wicked witch of the east.
who is nosyne?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(please pardon the unvarnished condition of these images. no gifs of rebecca liddiard exist and your girl is mobile 80% of the time.)
when letheia was six, hecate gathered her daughter onto her lap and gently, laughingly told her of a "happy accident"--that she would have a sister. an accident it certainly was: hecate had privately vowed to have only one child, an heir, and not repeat her own mother's mistake of having many daughters or a long-term partner. but while the man she'd been seeing was quietly paid off and moved along--just another heart broken by letheia's free-spirited and mercurial mother--hekate decided, after much thought, to keep her second pregnancy. she'd do her own mother one better; she wouldn't repeat the same mistakes.
in that, hecate succeeded. her second daughter, nosyne, was not her older sister's rival but her best friend, bringing out the playful and joyous side of letheia that was usually smothered by the regime of control and the role in state affairs imposed on her by her mother. while hecate could be a good playmate, letheia never knew if her mother would suddenly turn into the frightening disciplinarian that dwelt behind her good humor. letheia and nosyne had no such hidden facets from each other.
this isn't to say that they never fought or never had differences. at the time, pressures of being the heir and uncertainties in her maternal relationship made letheia cerebral and overly serious; her mother and her courtiers sometimes dryly called her "the little statesman" for her somber intensity. nosyne, with no such burdens and no particular ambition to have them, was freer and more cheerful, and brought out the part of her sister that was still a child. much of the humor and levity in letheia's adult personality grew from nosyne's encouragement (as well as, of course, her inheritance from her sparkling and witty mother).
while nosyne proved early on to have abilities equal to any other witch, and commensurately endured the same disciplinary regime as her sister, whatever interest she had in the western throne dwindled the older the sisters became. she envisioned herself as her sister's closest advisor rather than a ruler in her own right and was happy to enjoy privilege and power without the burden of outright rulership. there were certain frustrations and resentments--a sense that for her to have children of her own would be verboten, in particular--but for the most part, nosyne was comfortable in her role as spare.
there were two significant turning points in the relationship between sisters.
the sudden and early death of their mother, which i will discuss in another post.
the installment of nosyne as the ruling witch of the east, which i will discuss below.
the ruling witch of the east died some decades (rn i am trying to figure out if it's more like 20 years or more like 50 years) BD (Before Dorothy), stunning the three other quadrants of oz. she stunned them particularly because she died without an heir. while rws had died suddenly before--like all living beings, rws do have physical vulnerabilities and can be killed or die of sickness--it was unheard of for one to die without a designated inheritor of their throne. the proper thing to do, agreed locasta of the north and glinda of the south, would be to resort to royal authority, turn over the ruby slippers to the emerald city, and collectively work from there to decide who would rule the east.
letheia knew all this. she also knew that soon north and south would bring the issue to her to request her involvement and cooperation. before anyone could act on this political quandary, she stole the ruby slippers, gave them to nosyne, and installed her as ruling witch of the east.
it was a breathtaking coup unlike anything ruling witches had ever seen. never had two witches of the same family ruled two regions of oz. it was unthinkable and the exact kind of monopoly that the pastorius knot and the ozian constitution had been designed to prevent.
king pastorius--an overall weak ruler who ill discuss later as well--shrugged his shoulders. to him, this was witch business, and insofar as he was involved in witch business, he favored letheia over the other rws. north and south were astonished and disgusted by his inaction; to them, this was an affront to both their authority and to his, a clear power grab, massively disrespectful to all they held dear. this action turned whatever tension or latent hostility they held against letheia into hatred and rivalry.
nosyne, for her part, didn't really want the throne or the slippers. she wanted what she'd always wanted: freedom to party, to flirt, to wear gorgeous gowns and to read in the castle library and to argue philosophy then have no-strings sex with her interlocutor. but her beloved sister had asked this responsibility of her, so she took it. it would spell her doom.

Note
I'm pretty sure that picture is like the Tillman family reunion. There's Roy Tillman (Gator's father) played by Jon Hamm, Gator Tillman played by our beloved Joe Keery, there's also Karen Tillman (Gator's sister) played by Rebecca Liddiard and Scotty Tillman (Gator's niece) played by Sienna King, and lastly there's Gator's Uncle played by Stuart Bently.
Ooh thank you for all this info!
