     new in charming wasn’t that rare.  it was new staying in charming that was more of an enigma.  people saw the market value on housing and property then thought hey could get something closer to oakland without having to pay the price.  thing was, charming was a special little town with some very special people in it.  if someone looked dangerous in any kind of way, clay weaseled them out.  usually unser helped.  if they were stubborn enough the sons would pay a visit and go from there.

     miss astrid did not seem to be the kind of new face they’d have to worry about.  instinct said running but there was nothing else in the conversation to even remotely back that up.  all he had was a drink and a name.  a name that, should his suspicions be true, would not lead him anywhere.  not that it mattered.  jax suddenly realized he was entirely too on edge if he was so hellbent on over analyzing a drink from a beautiful woman.  sometimes a drink was a drink.  jax needed to remember that.  the politics of the table didn’t encompass the entire town.

     “ well, if you need any additional assistance moving boxes around.  i know a whole group of strapping young men waiting to do charming a service, “ the playful grin summons forth again, upticking at one corner of his lips.  he holds up the glass, nodding, and takes another sip.  since he had interest in the conversation, one way or another, jax takes one last drag from his cigarette and stamps it out in a nearby ashtray.  he holds it in his lungs for a heartbeat when blows it in the opposite direction of his company.  “ hey, “ his chin nods at the bartender.  “ whatever she wants. “  only fair to reciprocate the beverage.

     all that out of the way, jax angles his stool to look at astrid from a better angle.  still, in that shitty lighting, she looks like nothing but a temptress.  intelligence sits behind those eyes.  he definitely likes what he sees.  

     “ interesting choice of relocation.  what brings you to our fair city? “  he’s not judging.  whatever it is really isn’t his business but the answer interests him, regardless.  at the same time, he had no illusions that charming was a piece of shit.  but, it was their piece of shit and the sons took pride in keeping it safe.  

     the comment on friends finally hits him.  now that his mind of slowing down and he’s taking everything in.  his grin shifts into something a little more tempered.  problems with leroy (nothing new there).  lin was being a pain in the ass for no reason at all.  from where jax was sitting, anyway.  plausible the old man knew more than he did.  the vp patch didn’t mean being privy to everything right away.  “ rough week, “ jax mutters with a surprising amount of control.  

     finally, with a shake of his head.  “ i’m sorry. “  his hand extends for a shake, “ jax. “

The name takes getting used to; Astrid is similar enough that she looks up at the first syllable anyway, and Vogel, at least, is her own private joke. She'd wanted to go with Hawk, but that might have been too obvious. The tattoos are a challenge, too, her left arm still sore when she sleeps on that side, and occasionally almost painfully itchy where she'd blacked out some of the flowers to make the remaining ones bolder. She'll cover her right arm when she can, but for now, it's just the crow on her hand, in flight against a crescent moon. She lines her eyes differently, darkens her eyebrows, wears a darker shade of her usual lipstick. The face that stares back at her in the mirror is familiar enough to leave her uneasy with the differences she knows shouldn't be there, but it's the hair that feels the most wrong.

It's shorter, now, her curls skimming her shoulders, and a few shades darker, just like her lipstick. For a box dye, it looks natural, so she can't complain too much, but she just doesn't feel like Astoria anymore. Which, she supposes, is a good thing in the long run: it means that she can keep herself in character, playing the role of perfectly normal woman not recovering from a beating that left her with a few new scars. She'd done her recovery on the road, from motel to motel, biding her time while she figured out her next stop. And here, on the other side of the country, in the sort of little town she'd never willingly settle into, Astoria Grim simply doesn't exist.

"Just moved in." She settles onto the stool beside him. Leather with those kinds of patches means biker, which means he knows his way around, which means that he'll have the kind of reliable advice for moving through town that you really only get from those perpetually in motion and the most vicious gossips. If he's unfriendly, she'll try her luck looking for a paper boy. "Spent all of yesterday unpacking. I'm brand new." Unpacking mostly meant buying some detergent and dumping her clothes from her bag into the washing machine before picking up a few necessities: sheets, food for a few days, a couple of cheap paperbacks to pass the time. "Figured it's time to make friends. You look like you could use one." He's pretty, with those bright eyes and a face she's sure is plenty accustomed to smiling. Broad shoulders, powerful hands. She wants very badly to wash his hair. Astoria extends a hand, and when she introduces herself, the name sounds more natural than it did the last time she said it. "Astrid."

My take on this is that. Loki never says he hates Thor or Odin. He never says his upbringing was horrible. That is SHOWN to us in how he is treated by everyone around him at the start of Thor 1 and going into Thor 2. 

What he DOES say is:

“It all makes sense now, why you favored Thor all these years, because no matter how much you claimed to love me you could never have a Frost Giant sitting on the throne of Asgard.”

So what Loki DOES do is acknowledge that Odin claimed to love him. He takes into consideration how both the siblings were treated, and yes, Thor is favoured. Thor is SO favoured. We literally see this ourselves in everything. It happens in the scene when Thor and Loki are both children and Loki asks a question that goes unanswered while Thor’s enthusiasm about killing the Jotun monsters gets a response. We see this in the way Loki was consistently lied to about his origins for over a thousand years. We see this in Thor’s coronation scene! 

The thing about this is that it’s not just Odin that favours Thor, everyone else who is good also holds immediate doubts to Loki or betrays him during the film. Odin and Loki only interact a few times in Thor 1 and Loki is getting lied to or rejected by him in all of them. 

I know it’s Loki’s POV but HE TAKES INTO ACCOUNT ODIN’S SHOWS OF LOVE. We can’t make a judgement on whether Odin “loved” Loki or not because we get no arguments imo other than the fact that Odin didn’t kill Loki. It’s a low bar but it doesn’t even matter whether Odin loves Loki or not because the upbringing WAS BAD. 

How can an upbringing where Loki’s own race is being openly and enthusiastically called monsters be… not awful. 1000+ years in and Frigga and Odin still treat being Jotun as some horrid truth. And they are aware he was born Jotun. 

Thor ends up ridiculously arrogant and with no worth of life in the other races. Loki ends up with a tendency to keep his mouth shut and sink into the shadows.

I simply refuse to go “it was a tantrum” when Loki had legitimate reasons to react in Thor 1 that are literally shown/told to us. We already know Odin hunted down and slayed all the monsters, we know he takes war prizes and relics and then keeps the conquered realms under his imperial rule, we know Thor shares the glorified view of war Odin saw and did nothing about, we know the Jotun are still told as a story to scare children at night. 

IGNORING THE RACE ASPECT COMPLETELY, (because Loki being stolen/adopted is a thing that came to light later) “he doesn’t say what he believes, he says something and then believes it,” may be an interpretation of the vault scene but i’m not seeing it. Loki is jumping to conclusions, yes, but he’s not wrong in any of them. They’re logical jumps. They make sense. 

Loki never refutes whether Odin’s claims of love were correct or not, only relates it immediately to the throne (which is incredibly relevant and i love the role of symbolism in Thor 1). 

It also literally doesn’t matter to me whether Odin and Frigga loved him lmao. Loving someone doesn’t negate abuse. It’s why I take such an issue with Thanos throwing Gamora off the cliff working… I don’t care if there was love there the way it was expressed was not it. 

Since no one is a mind reader yes, you can say Odin loves Loki. You can also say Odin absolutely loathes him. One has more evidence imo that the other but both can be argued for! 

Likewise, you can argue that every word out of Loki’s mouth is lies and untrustworthy and a completely unreliable version of events. And maybe I’d do that if it sounded like he was actually exaggerating anything. 

Throw aside visual behaviour, Loki drops things at “[you] claimed to love me” and everything else we get from that movie isn’t even dialogue it’s what we observe. Loki’s not out there trying to prove he’s not loved, he’s trying to do the opposite. 

In Avengers 1 he goes: 

“I remember a shadow, living in the shade of your greatness. I remember you tossing me into an abyss.“ 

The latter half is obviously incorrect. I’m not going to go into theories on that right now, or the line after on how he was and should be king (though he’s… not entirely wrong there.) But the “I remember a shadow, living in the shade of your greatness,” is acknowledged as his opinion. He goes “I remember a shadow” not that he was one, and Thor’s Thor 1 terrible ‘apology’ next to the ‘imagined slights’ comment doesn’t paint a great picture anyway because it. essentially invalidates ANY of Loki’s view being correct. After we already saw he was genuinely treated disrespectfully in Thor 1. 

OG Loki was. in my opinion. extremely self aware. It was to his own detriment mostly but it’s an important thing. It’s also why his perspective clashing with the other’s on Asgard’s was something I found interesting. As far as I’m concerned Loki’s take on his own experiences is the most reliable take on his own experiences. Even if it’s by default since no one else in-universe ever takes the time to validate anything he’s gone through. and he tends to be the only one on his side.

tldr; if someone is going to claim Loki exaggerated I’m going to need evidence or a theory or a basis for that. if someone is going to claim Odin didn’t know how to communicate? Same here. I need cited sources. An explanation for how things went oh so terribly wrong on his part with thousands of years of loading time. Also any proof that Loki was a spoiled prince who was lying about his dad not loving him and where exactly he said that. That’d be appreciated. <3

UC 51.03 - London Business School vs Hertford, Oxford

Since it was introduced at the 1988 Olympics, every single Gold Medal in the Women’s Team event in the Archery has gone to South Korea. Including yesterday’s win that’s nine straight victories, and their period of unparalleled dominance continues. The men’s team have also won six of the nine they have contested, and a mixed team won the first staging of that event in Tokyo too. Adding their success in the individual events, South Korea have won 26 gold medals, and 42 in total, in the 43 archery events which have been thus far staged at the Olympic Games. 

As Twitter’s own @tarequelaskar pointed out in the brilliant article which alerted me to this story, this is a perfect example of specialisation, an economic concept whereby countries or companies focus intensely on one particular aspect of a given industry and come to serve that niche in such a specialised fashion that they become the ultimate experts and nigh-on irreplaceable. This is done in government and business by providing companies with incentives to specialise, and supporting those who succeed at it. 

With respect to Korean archery, similar forces are at play. There are a bunch of professional teams and leagues in the country, giving archers financial stability while they focus on their training, something not as common across the world. Said training involves such things as practicing in live baseball stadiums and replicas of the Olympic venues, to mimic first the atmosphere and then the conditions that will be present on the day of the actual tournament. 

This philosophy of marginal gains - the same system used by Team Sky and Chris Froome to win multiple Tour De Frances on the trot - puts their preparation miles ahead of the competition, which goes some way to explaining their dominance. It is not the only reason. Before the fine-tuning of the elite shooters comes the discovery of the promising young ones, and the inspiring nature of past success (along with a historic national love of the sport) helps to create a virtuous cycle which give Korea a far larger number of archers to choose from than any other country. This greater choice means that there is a greater chance of finding the next Gold medallists.

Making the argument that professional footballers are at a higher level than other elite sportspeople, Michael Cox used this same argument in a recent article for The Athletic. To summarise, he stated that because there are a far higher number of people who wish to become professional footballers, that must mean that the ones who do make it are at a higher standard than those who make it in other sports. Initially, I was drawn in by the pure maths of this point, but having thought about it some more I’m no longer sure to what extent I agree. 

Now, the fact that hundreds of millions more people play football than rugby, or basketball, will certainly confer some level of “eliteness”, but only up to a certain point. Because football has been so popular for so long, the general standard of the play, relative to what it used to be, has had longer to improve. In the same way that if you transplanted a 100m runner from the Olympic final in the early 20th century to now they probably wouldn’t even qualify for the games, a footballer from the 80s would stand less of a chance of making it were they playing today. Many other sports don’t have that level of natural progression, afforded by decades of technical and tactical advancement - at least not globally. 

But the numbers argument only goes so far, as can be demonstrated by the Korean archers. Yes, there are more archers in Korea than anywhere else, relatively, giving them a higher chance of uncovering those with a natural aptitude, but the reason behind their bow and arrow dynasty is the specialisation. The hyper-detailed level of training and focus which allows them to be the best they can possible be. 

Now, archery is unique in that there is a theoretical maximum score (I understand that this is to some extent arbitrary, and related to the rules of the game as defined by some human being, semi-randomly, but it works in terms of this argument, because it gives a percentage score of how good the archers are based on the agreed-upon parameters of the sport), which, at the Olympics, is 720. The Olympic record is 700 (held by Korean Kim Woo-jin, giving an implied “eliteness level” of 97.2%. 

The best player in the history of football (don’t @ me) is Lionel Messi, and few would doubt that he operates at or above that level of perfection in his sport. But I also don’t think you could doubt that Novak Djokovic, or Serena Williams in her pomp, were similarly magnificent at tennis. Cyclists on the Tour De France put their bodies through more in three weeks than most people endure in a decade, and have every aspect of their training and diet strictly controlled so as to bring them as close to perfection as possible. There will certainly be a higher number of these elite performers in football, because there are a higher number of paying jobs for said elite performers, and because more people attempt to become elite performers, but I don’t think that it follows on from that that they are better at their sport than other elite athletes, all of whom have undergone years and years of specialised training to get them where they are.

Does any of this matter, in terms of how each sport should be enjoyed? Probably not, but its interesting to think about, and kind of awe-inspiring to try and appreciate just how good those at the top of their respective games are. And if there is some discrepancy in the level of eliteness between the different sports it doesn’t detract from the fact that they would handily dispatch any civilian challengers without breaking a sweat. The joy comes from watching people who are good at stuff doing that stuff - and, as evidenced by the crowds which gather for non-league football, it doesn’t matter whether or not they are at the absolute pinnacle of said stuff. They’re still going to be much better than the rest of us. 

Competitive quizzing is different from the activities previously mentioned in that any normal person can have a guess at pretty much any question, with a chance that they’ll get it right. What sets the contestants apart on shows like University Challenge is the speed of their recall under pressure - the quickness of their knowledge as well as the knowledge itself. But there are plenty of armchair quizzers who think they could wipe the floor on the show, so just how good are the actual contestants? (Compared to an elite footballer or archer on an imaginary scale that accounts for relative skill in all disciplines?). I don’t know (and in case you hadn’t noticed by now I’m just fascinated by people who are really good at anything, and wanted to share some of that fascination with you all), but I’ll try and have a go at answering it anyway. 

So, the World Quizzing Championships have been dominated by British and Irish quizzers since its inception in 2003, with 16 of the 18 winners coming from either Britain or the Republic of Ireland (who have four wins courtesy of The Egghead Pat Gibson). This, in my mind, makes this neck of the woods comparable to South Korean archery. It is a hotbed of talent, and the infrastructure is in place to encourage and aid talent maximalisation. Indeed, if you scroll down the list of highest ranking players at the WQC in any given year you can see a significant cohort of UC alums, so clearly there are a number of elite quizzers who have passed through the show. 

This specialisation can be seen in microcosm with the preponderance of top-level quizzers produced by Oxford and Cambridge, who both have a long-standing culture of competitive quizzing far beyond other Universities. The debate is there to be had on the fairness of each institution having so many teams, but clearly they produce enough elite players to compete with far bigger Unis when entering as (sometimes tiny) colleges. 

In conclusion, I think it is pretty obvious that UC is a breeding ground for world-class quizzers, and though no one has won a World title straight off the bat after appearing on the show, there are top-50 and top 100 finishes abound, which is still greatly impressive, and helps to give an idea of just how good these students really are. 

Hoping to justify the 1000 words I’ve just written about their exceptional talents are two teams from the London Business School and Hertford College, Oxford. The Oxford side have never made it beyond the second round, but LBS reached the semi-finals in 2006, their only previous appearance on the show. Anyway, there is quite literally no time for me to recite the rules; here’s your first starter for ten... 

Paxman mentions that LBS were in the show in 2006, but doesn’t mention that they reached the semi final, which is lazy imo. A bunch of them are studying for MBAs, which makes sense. He doesn’t mention Hertford’s previous appearances either, but that’s more understandable.

Hertford’s Hitchens takes the first starter with Kennedy, and the Oxonians added a full set of bonuses on words made up by authors - including a couple of educated guesses. LBS hit back with the next question, but can only manage one bonus on famous scientists. One of the two they miss is Rosalind Franklin, and Paxman teases them for not spotting an apparently obvious clue within the question.

The first picture round is on national emblems, and LBS are first to recognise that of Vietnam for the starter. They don’t know Laos or Belarus, but do know that Mozambique has a machine gun on its one. Butterworth then jumps the gun with argon on the next starter, giving his answer just as Paxman says it in the question. Butterworth makes up for it with the music starter, recognising Fat Boy Slim before anyone else, and LBS know Primal Scream and Wu Tang Clan too. They’re still fifty points behind though, and will need a big second half to turn things around.

This task gets more difficult for them, as Hitchens takes another starter. Lloyd adds a second in a row for Oxford and they are nearly one hundred points clear. LBS really need to get some points on the board, and Ruess duly obliges, knowing that there is a massive sculpture of a spider called Maman, which sounds needlessly scary, to the extent that I’m not even going to google it.

The comeback is ended before its even begun as Oswald takes a starter for Hertford, which gives them the picture bonuses - the starter having been dropped by both teams. Lloyd produces another excellent guess of Reuben, demonstrating how useful it is to have vague knowledge as well as specific knowledge. This is one of probably five questions he has answered in a throwaway manner, but which turned out to be correct. 

By this point LBS seem to have accepted defeat. Ruess takes another starter, but there is little to no urgency on the bonus questions. They’re right, granted, to have none, they have no chance of winning, but if they gave it a go they might scrape a high scoring loser spot. Ruess is the only one who seems bothered, and bags himself ten more points. They have an amusing discussion about methods of poisoning in Agatha Christie novels (’it was used as a curry ingredient?’, Ruess wondered aloud, trying to figure out which spices could be poisonous, before Butterworth pointed out that it wasn’t something commonly used as a curry ingredient, prompting respectful mirth from the audience) on the bonuses, but still languish miles behind. 

Lloyd grabs the last starter of the night for Hertford, who win by eighty at the gong.

Final Score: London Business School 100 - 180 Hertford, Oxford

At the end, Paxman mentions Hertford’s stellar guesswork, which means I wasn’t chatting nonsense (at least on that front, the jury is out on the rest of it), and says that they’ve done a really good job. Incredibly effusive praise for a score of 180. He really is going soft in his old age.

Fandoms: atm, primarily Shadowhunters. But also BioWare: Dragon Age and Mass Effect and maybe someday I’ll post some Jade Empire.

Also the occasional other game or TV show or Yuletide inspired one-shot. It’s a wide and ridiculous range of things, from a Georgette Heyer regency epilogue to Code: Realize and #7kpp to Firefly & even some Sleepy Hollow ficlets from back in s1 before we realized how terrible TPTB were going to be.

Number of fics: I have 158 works published on AO3.

This includes a couple of fanmixes that are linked on there to companion fics/series, two collaborative fics which are not just mine, even less so than most writing that is, and four WIPs: two of which I am still working on, one of which will absolutely 100% NEVER ever get more, and then that last one will probably not get more but who knows, maybe in ten years we’ll do a reunion and try again (it’s one of the collabs).

AS WELL AS: forty-seven different ficlet collections, sorted by fandom and pairing(s), because otherwise I would honestly have almost 1000 things and never be able to find a single damn one of them when I wanted to (and neither would anyone else). Like, ten of them are just for Shadowhunters because I split up the coda-fic by season and then also I put the porn in its own thing and Clizzy is kind of a post-canon AU so they’re on their own too and spin-offs of a particular fic setting get their own collection so they’re all together and etc. etc. etc.

Fic I spent a lot of time on: Do we count time actually writing? Or just the amount of time it hung out in my head before I finished it? Because I probably spent the most actual physical writing time on Lost For Words, which is a frothy cotton-candy experiment in long-fic for Mass Effect that I posted chapter by chapter as I wrote it and actually finished. (I have never successfully repeated the experience, tho I suppose a couple of my Shadowhunters fics will sort-of qualify in terms of length when they’re done, but they didn’t get posted semi-regularly and in progressive chapters in at all the same way.)

In terms of time between debut and completion, that would probably have to go to Cruel Intentions, which took over five years between initially going up on the Dragon Age Kink Meme and actually getting a conclusion.

i am for you and if broken hearts were whole have both been lingering WIPs for over two years at this point now, though, and a couple other DA2 fics were pretty close to that five year mark as well. 😅

Fic I didn’t spend a lot of time on: ashes of angels because I was coming up on my bingo deadline so I just pounded it out in a day. (It’s actually quite good tho! I think so, anyway! I am very proud of it! Read part one first, if you haven’t yet!)

also Impossible, (DA2, Bethany/Sebastian, confessional!porn) which mostly wrote itself in pretty short order, which was delightful. (Tho I also had a very astute beta for that one; don’t think he’s on tumblr anymore tho, or I’d yell at him in thanks again.) I told y’all I had a priest!kink problem. Not that you hadn’t all noticed on your own, anyways...

Longest fic: Finished? The aforementioned Lost for Words at just over 62k.

In limbo? Persephone Rising is literally three times longer than my next longest fic (and still not done!) but it is also a collab fic with three authors, so I suppose that sort of evens out?

Active WIP? i am for you at 59k. I’m not sure how much more is left of that one, tbqh... it will probably end up a bit longer than LfW, tho maybe not by much.

Shortest fic: I have no fucking clue, 47 ficlet collections, remember? In terms of a thing that I forgot to collect, apparently it is Consequences, which is my Brosca after the Landsmeet in DA:O.

Fic I want to rewrite/expand: Except for the revisions to what is now Maleficar, I much prefer to leave fic as is, once it’s up there, so nothing on the re-write front. It was what it was when I did it, and it’s important to remember that, even when you move on to new stuff, imo.

But! I have potential/hopeful sequels in the WIP folder for and breathing is wishing, out of some dreaming tree, with an if in its soul, and several assorted ficlet collections & prompts I’ve sort of teased over the years. 

Favourite fic of mine: At the moment, they have hung the sky with arrows because it’s a thing I’m not sure I ever really thought I was going to write, and then I did and I surprised myself a little, but it was fun and it ties together a lot of my thoughts on the Shadowhunters finale in a way I really enjoyed. (Also it has an actual plot! I don’t do that terribly often, I’m usually very introspective in my fic.)

Sneak peek of a WIP/Share an idea? I started a Shadowhunter!Magnus fic for a bingo square, but then scope creep! so I made a moodboard, but there is maybe a fic on the way... eventually. After my Bangs. 🤞🏻

The first time Magnus Bane met the High Warlock of Manhattan it was during his "travels", the two years after graduating from the Academy when most Nephilim wandered from Institute to Institute, seeing how things were done differently around the world, how they were still so often the same, learning about all the things you couldn't see in a classroom.

He wasn't actually in New York City in order to meet the High Warlock, of course, not as a 17-year-old foot soldier, that was well above his pay grade, as the mundanes put it. But when all the full-fledged Shadowhunters had work to do, he was assigned escort duty when the High Warlock showed up to do his yearly wards inspection. 

Magnus met High Warlock Lightwood at the main entrance, and almost swallowed his own tongue at the sight of him, a broad shouldered, long-legged white man dressed in a conservative but very well-tailored suit, with heavy eyebrows, even heavier eyelashes, and a complete and utter lack of anything resembling an expression on his face. 

A shiver went down Magnus' spine as he met the High Warlock's gaze, and he refused to think too much about why.

Magnus managed to introduce himself reasonably coherently, he thought, offering a hand to shake, but the High Warlock just raised an eyebrow at him. "I thought I'd talked them out of this nonsense last year."

"Uh." Magnus swallowed. The man was both terrifying and ludicrously attractive, and Magnus resigned himself to being a slightly stuttering idiot for the next four-to-six hours. "Not my call, I'm sorry to say. Sir."

The High Warlock rolled his eyes, and stepped forward. Magnus barely managed to dodge out of his way, and followed along behind him as he stalked towards the Angelic Core, where all the Institute Wards were anchored.

He never once acknowledged Magnus' presence as he worked, never asked for directions, or needed any sort of assistance. NEW WORLDS (2014)this one is a mini series, only 4 episodes long, but please don’t let that stop you! it’s about anti-monarchism and rebellion and forbidden love in the 1600′s & is set in both england and america. i cried more than once but the ending is so bittersweet and hopeful!! 

POLDARK (2015—)i have a love/hate relationship with this one tbh. i started watching because of the main relationship but i ended up really into it for the side relationships instead?? the actual political plot doesn’t interest me but i love the drama between the family members. also i adore the women in this show, every single female character is well-written and realistic and you’ll love them all (even if at times you hate them). the men tho? the men are pretty much collectively the worst. “what’s wrong with the women in this family?” “the men.”

SPARTACUS (2010—2013) ♡i started watching this before i ever got into game of thrones but if you like the fight scenes in got, you’ll enjoy this! great characters, great fight scenes, great friendships. this one is based on gladiators who are fighting for their freedom.

THE WHITE PRINCESS (2017) ♡okay firstly and most importantly: jodie comer stars in this so you know it’s good. it’s also got michelle fairly (catelyn stark) in it though tbh she wasn’t my favourite character in this and i didn’t find her likeable at all. it’s not very historically accurate ofc but the relationship between henry/elizabeth is honestly the perfect enemies to lovers rep & always lowkey reminds me of book!sansa/jon possibilities

PAN AM (2011—2012)this one isn’t like game of thrones at all but it’s only one season and it’s super cute and has a lot of famous actresses in it like christina ricci & margot robbie. based on the adventures of a crew of pan am stewardesses, this is a good combination of lighthearted fun and chilling cold-war drama. an old favourite. 

THE MUSKETEERS (2014—2016) ♡i’ll be gushing over this for years to come tbh it’s really just that perfect. the relationship between the musketeers is so lovely, the personification of ‘brotherhood’ really, but also the romantic relationships are really good too?? which for some reason i personally hadn’t expected. my fav couple is aramis/anne (anne is played by the actress who played roslin frey!) because the forbidden love & the respect and adoration between those two is just perfect but really every relationship (even the ones that don’t become endgame) are written very well

OUTLANDER (2014—)i haven’t watched every single episode of this one but from what i have seen it’s very good, and has some similar themes to game of thrones!! the sex scenes are epic, the main relationship is lovely, and overall its a very realistic show that features supernatural elements!

THE LAST KINGDOM (2015—) ♡i’m not going to lie: i started this series by skipping straight to 2x7 because i’d seen gifs of the relationship between aethelflaed and erik but it was so good i ended up going back and starting from the beginning! this show reminds me of ‘vikings’ more tham game of thrones but it’s not as gory and the characters aren’t all assholes. side note: if you love sansa stark as much as i do you’re gonna love aethelflaed, lady of mercia! she’s actually a real person but this show is based on a book series that looks super interesting! honestly the main character also kind of reminds me of jon snow

HARLOTS (2017—) ♡oh my gosh how do i describe this show?? the family dynamics are so! intricate! and! beautiful! honestly just stunning. everything about this show is s t u n n i n g. the costumes are colourful and vivid and honestly i’d recommend watching just for that but the storyline really does keep you hooked!! also: liv tyler and jessica brown findlay are love interests in this which is honestly a dream come true

BLACK SAILS (2015—2017)okay full disclosure; i haven’t actually seen this but i’ve heard very good things and it’s on my list!! it’s about pirates, i think there’s some queer rep (can anybody confirm??), and there’s lots of amazing women. again, allegedly. 

dramas:

THE SOCIETY (2018—)i literally watched the entire first season in a single night so it must be alright, right? basically all you need to know about this is that a town full of teenagers go on a field trip & then return to find all their parents mysteriously missing and their town closed off from the outside world. it’s basically lord of the flies but modern! with some kick-ass friendships! and amazing young women (one literally teaches herself to be a doctor can you believe?)! 

SHARP OBJECTS (2018)if you haven’t heard about this one yet idk what rock you’ve been living under but welcome back! this one is a m a z i n g but also hella chilling and the ending is such a shocker if it hasn’t been spoiled for you yet!

THE BOLD TYPE (2017—) ♡i always describe this one as ‘sex and the city for millennials’ but i’ve never watched a single sex and the city episode in my life so i honestly don’t know how accurate that is?? but it’s about a group of 20-something year old women who are best friends and work mates and they love each other so much?? the relationship between the girls is my favourite thing about the show but the show honestly tackles a lot of relevant issues; trump, age gaps, queer rep, immigration, racism, etc. i can’t recommend this enough!

CODE BLACK (2015—2018) ♡you know those episodes in greys anatomy where everything is life-or-death and you’re on edge for the whole episode? that’s basically every single episode of code black. this is hands-down one of my most rewatched shows ever. i love medical dramas and this one balances well written characters with action-packed medical miracles so honestly what’s not to like?? 

A DISCOVERY OF WITCHES (2018—)okay admittedly the only reason i watch this show is because of the main couple but i can’t help it when they’re just so gosh-darn cute!! they love each other so god damned much! i wasn’t completely sold on this straight away but by ep 3 i was HOOKED. if you like supernatural romances/dramas that are more mature than your usual cw show, this one is a good choice!

THE OA (2016—) ♡i can’t even put into words how much i adore this?? but also: it will confuse THE SHIT out of you. no matter how smart you are, this one will leave you scratching your head. basically: a group of people who’ve had near-death experiences get kidnapped and experimented on. it’s not as brutal as it sounds, in fact the show is exceptionally beautiful, but it does deal with some hard themes and the good guys don’t always win. 

12 MONKEYS (2015—2018)do you like time travel? do you like forbidden and yet totally-still-devoted-to-one-another-anyway love? then this is the show for you! this one is dark and gritty and deals pretty realistically with the concept of time travel & self-sacrifice and what people will give up to create a better world. it’s got a happy ending & you wont regret watching!

THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE (2018)oh this one will make you cry. in a good way though! long story short a family grows up in a haunted house and it affects them in ways they cannot imagine. it’s hauntingly beautiful and poetic and everybody should watch it at least once imo

comedies:

THE MARVELOUS MRS MAISEL (2017—)okay so this one counts as a period drama as well but it’s about a COMEDIAN so i put it in the comedy section lol. okay so long story short, a woman is left by her husband, she’s worth 1000 of him & everybody else knows it because you seriously can’t help falling in love with this woman but ofc there’s period-typical sexism she has to face as she struggles with being a single woman, a single mother, and an up-and-coming comedian. def recommend.

SANTA CLARITA DIET (2017—2019)drew barrymore is a zombie!! who lives a normal life but also eats people!! it’s only weird for the first couple of eps. the family dynamics are snarky and witty and they manage to make gore funny?? honestly this entire show is legit laugh-out-loud darkly hilarious.

So I'm just curious, how do you get yourself to write? And do you use prompts and if you do where do you get them? I meant to use NaNo to get me to write but it took 4 days into November for me to realize November started so I failed lol. I've been meaning to start this original thing and it's just not...working.

First of all, anon, you could start writing RIGHT NOW (yes, with 10 days left in the month) and you would not fail NaNo. You might not hit 50k (although I know people who have hit 50k in that amount of time, or less), but you won’t fail. NaNoWriMo isn’t about hitting 50,000 words so much as it is about putting a stake in the ground and saying, “Here. Today. I will start writing the project I’ve always wanted to.” And doing it. Doesn’t matter what that project is—original novel, short stories, fic, poetry, revising something, a series of blog posts—NaNo is about just. Fucking. Doing it. And you still have time to Do It.

To answer your questions:

Do you use prompts and if you do, where do you get them?

For original stories, particularly novels, I usually don’t. For fic, particularly short fic I’m writing for events, I do. Tumblr has a wealth of writing prompts that range from “here’s a situation” to “here’s a line of dialogue GO,” and I tend to reblog them under the tags “fic prompts” or “writing prompts.” Honestly, most of them would work for either original fic or fanfic, so if you are a writer who likes to work from prompts, go forth and enjoy!

How do you get yourself to write?

That’s kind of a big question, and uh, the answer to it got long. Very long. (I said once that if you give me half a chance, I’ll talk about writing all the live-long day, and this answer is no exception.)

Different things motivate me for different projects, and as with all writing-related advice, YMMV, but here’s a few things that really help for getting myself to write:

1) Develop your story.

The current original story I’m working on, for example, I have not really had to struggle to get myself to write at all because 1) I’m stupid excited about it and 2) I have developed the hell out of it.

I’ve talked before about outlining my stuff here, so I won’t go too much into it again; suffice it to say that I have done about the same amount of development on my current original story that I had on ADA by the time I started writing. I started around the very end of September developing my characters and spent a good chunk of October working on setting, worldbuilding, plot, and finally my notecards.

Shockingly, having some idea of what’s happening and where I’m going is making this story easier to write.

Right? Like WHO’D HAVE THOUGHT.

Because of that, I’ve been excited about writing my story, so getting myself to write on it has been (comparatively) a cakewalk.

That’s not to say any of the writing is good (oh God no) or that there aren’t parts that need fixing, or that I haven’t been stuck. But it’s been stuck like “how do I describe seeing a tree-covered mountain in the middle of fall from the POV of someone who has never seen something like this” rather than “I have no fucking clue what happens next uh…”

The stories I struggle the most with writing are the ones that I’ve worked the least on developing. The stories that have been the easiest to write have been the ones I’ve spent at least a month doing prep work on before I ever start drafting.

2) Love your story.

Being in love with a story makes it a lot easier to write, at least for me. Because here’s the thing, ideas are easy.

If you’re a creative person, you’re going to end up with a file of story ideas—maybe prompts you liked, dialogue that stuck with you, one of those “humans are space orcs” tumblr posts that’s just really clicking in your brain—that will be longer than you could conceivably write if you had a hundred lifetimes. That’s okay! That’s great. But it means a lot of them are never going to get past the idea stage.

For me, the stories that get finished—the ones that not only get started but actually make it through the first draft and then three rounds of editing and revisions—are the ideas that I’ve been percolating on for months, if not longer. They’ve been cooking in the back of my brain while I’ve been doing other things, sorting themselves out, and most importantly: they will not let me go.

Coming up with ideas is easy. Finding an idea that will last and sustain a story and my interest for at least a year, if not longer? That’s harder.

Y’all know how much I’ve been talking about Tiger & Bunny over the past year? We’re talking that level of obsession with a story that I want to write, whether it’s fic or original. Sometimes it takes months or years for all the puzzle pieces to come together. Sometimes the whole thing will congeal within a few weeks, or there will be one crucial piece of story that will just make EVERYTHING come together, I will literally shout “OH MY FUCKING GOD” and that’s it, I’m off to the races. (In this particular case, it wasn’t anything I’d done in the first two weeks of poking at steampunk-y ideas; it was the realization that I could put a circus on an airship. The whole story just went WHOOSH after that.)

BUT. But. Sometimes you don’t have that. These stories are great and I love them and they remind me why I love writing so much (and if you’re writing something that’s gonna be 90k+, like I have a tendency to do, you need to be in love with it, IMO), but sometimes you’re in situations where you just have to get it done. In those cases:

3) Resort to bribery.

I’ve been poking at the third part of Alpha & Emissary, oh, basically since I posted the second part. My problem is that my fandom focus has been, shall we say, split for the past year. *coughs delicately, shoves Tiger & Bunny fics under the bed*

But here’s the thing: I hate having a published WIP on AO3 (it’s why I don’t publish long!fics until they’re completely drafted and mostly edited). I hate—HATE—having an unfinished series on AO3.

So that’s the rub: I have an unfinished series that I want to finish because I hate that it’s not finished. I also have a new fandom that is wresting my attention and inspiration away from said series. What’s a girl to do?

A girl tells herself she can’t write any more Tiger & Bunny fic until she finishes this one WIP, that’s what she does.

And it’s motivated me to sit my ass down and work on that WIP, because goddammit, I have a “but there was only one bed” TaiBani fic that I would really like to have up by New Year’s.

Your bribery will be different. Maybe you get to watch 1 episode of your favorite show per every 1k you write, or you get to try a new knitting project when you finish this short story. Maybe you binge-watch an entire season of your favorite anime if you exceed your NaNo goal. Or you write 50 words and get a cookie. The point is, find what works for you to get it done.

4) Figure out a minimum daily goal and stick with it.

For me, this was 500 words a day. 500 words. That’s it. That’s one 30-minute word sprint for me. That’s something I can do without stressing myself out.

Because of this point and point 3, I wrote more than 7000 words on a story I’d been stuck on for the better part of a year before I had to stop to work on NaNo stuff. Another 7k, and I’ll probably have it finished.

Your minimum word count will almost certainly be different. Maybe it’s 300 words a day, maybe it’s 1000. Hell, maybe it’s 100 words. Again, find what works for you, what you can write regularly without stressing yourself out.

Another important thing: If I didn’t hit 500 words, I didn’t beat myself up about it. Maybe I wrote 350. Or 220. Or just 93. The point is, did I write? Yes? Then I did good. I got myself a sentence or a paragraph closer to finishing. And it all adds up.

(And hey, you don’t have to write every day. I do, or I try to, because that’s what works for me. If it stresses you out to do so, then find another way to make it work.)

5) Deadlines, deadlines, deadlines.

This one’s hard because I can rarely keep a deadline that’s not set by an external source. If you tell me on December 20 that you need a story by December 22? Then on December 22, you’ll have a story, edited and ready to post. But when it comes to something I set for myself, the chances of a deadline working are 50/50.

That being said, it is something that helps me keep on track and even if I don’t finish something by a self-imposed deadline, it does get me writing.

6) Sprint with friends!

NaNo is really great for this because all your writer friends are coming out of the woodwork going I need to hit 5k by the end of today, will you sprint with me? Sometimes it just helps to have that kind of accountability. You all get together (I’ve used Discord, Google Hangouts, IRC, and Twitter DMs for this), set a timer, and write for 15 minutes or 20 minutes or 30 minutes. Then, when the time’s up, you post your word count, everybody congratulates everybody else, and then you take a break before doing the next one.

Sprints are the reason I’ve been able to make some pretty significant headway on my word counts, and few things get me writing like knowing I’m going to have to tell everybody in my group what my word count is in 30 minutes or less. >.>

Like I said earlier, YMMV on all of these. What works for me may work for you, or it might not. But if you aren’t sure, it’s worth giving it a shot.

/ Imo this is why he acknowledged that "defender" fan. A reaction to all the venom which is a lot lately. We knew he is aware of the twitter cancel campaigns and all the hate on IG/tumblr. He stated that in the latest zoom call when he basically called out fans for it. Even if he is checking out blogs about him, what's the problem? You would do it too if you were a public person and your rep and image was everyone's business. That doesn't mean he "sees" himself as the haters portray him, just that he wants to be aware of what is happening. Even if his team would do it, they would still inform him. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if his team told him about that account, just like they gave him those fan pics portraying bucky a while back.

I think it’s likely that Klaus thought about Caroline frequently but the mention of Klaroline or inserting Caroline into the narrative of to too much or too often was not in fitting with the writer's plans for Kl*mi or the audience they had built up.

I think the paradox  

with Klaus is that he’s this big bad fearsome hybrid and he wants to be feared and revered but also wants to be coddled. He wants a support system around him to eviscerate the nagging feeling at the back of his mind that he’s going to end up alone (which was brought about by the discovery of his bastard status and discovering his werewolf heritage which differentiated and in Klaus’ head isolated him from his siblings even though Rebekah and Elijah only became more attached to him after that when they sore always and forever, Finn never cared for him anyway and Kol - who was the actual black sheep of the family - acted out and separated himself from the other three because he had a chip on his shoulder) or that he’s a monster/abomination (brought on by his father’s abuse. 

That’s why he daggered his siblings, that’s why (or part of why) he was so controlling over Rebekah because he thrived on her unconditional love and was happy to abuse his power over her so longs as she didn’t become too interested in anyone or anything else.

This fandom likes to talk about how Caroline saw the good in Klaus and she did. She saw that the whole all-powerful hybrid thing was somewhat of a front and a defence mechanism because Klaus has a lot emotional and psychological turmoil he spent 1000 years running from. But she also recognized that that’s a bullshit excuse for not treating people, like people. That one cannot go around either presenting people with superficial charm or bullying them into giving you what you want.

She refused to coddle Klaus, she called him out on his actions while simultaneously recognizes he is essentially a human being (though not literally but you know..) and he’s not all bad. But what people fail to realise is you can sympathise with someone, like them, have a connection with them, and still disagree vehemently with their actions call them out on said actions and refuses to condone them. And that’s what Caroline did.

Rebekah, would often call Klaus out on his actions and express, discontent with them but her relationship with Klaus and indeed the rest of her family was built largely on codependency being that their bond with one another was the only positive during the tyranny of living under their father, turning into vampires and facing all other sorts of adversary. So their relationship is slightly more complicated.

Cami had a very narrow-minded, optimistic, black and white view of Klaus. And viewed his actions, rationale and persona like sobriety. If he took it one day at a time, harnessed the good within him and tried really hard to change he could. What Cami failed to recognise is that a) Klaus had no intention of changing, he said himself ‘this may come as a surprise to you but I’m not a very good person’ (and when someone shows you who they believe them) and b) being a better person isn’t as black an white as just being good.

Whether Klaus is the way he is due to paranoia caused by abuse, vampirism or just his personality (or all three) it’s who he is, his habits and personal quirks were ingrained in him for 1000+ years. That’s not to say he isn’t or wasn’t capable of change but Cami’s idea of getting him there was very human and very naive. She thought her chats with him and her words of encouragement and his fondness for her and her big blue pleading eyes would get Klaus to see the light.

And Klaus entertained it because I think he enjoyed having someone doe-eyed and hopeful in his corner telling he could be better and that he was a good person deep down inside (since Rebekah and Elijah had effectively given up)

I say all of this because I don’t want people to think that Cami was a bootleg Caroline in the sense that they both coddled Klaus told him he could be a better person and made him do better. The difference is, Caroline made no active effort to change him, she told him what she thought, stood her ground and made her feelings on certain issues and behaviours clear. Whether it was due to his respect for her or his attraction to her, Klaus changed his plans, reasoned, leveled and went out of his way for Caroline but never once did she ask him to change, She just made it clear that he had no place in her life acting the way he did and doing the things he did (”you want my friend to step one show me I can trust you” “show me your compassion”)

Cami for all her pep talks didn’t have much effect on Klaus. Ultimately or though he was fond of her and attempted to do things for her such as trying to help father Kieran, he never deviated from his plans or whatever it was he wanted to do for her sake. He never made a U-turn because of something Cami said. Any progress Klaus made in that 3 years was an effect of Hope’s existence or a lesson learnt from his family putting their foot down with him or learning to co-parent with Hayley and being forced to coexist peacefully with others and sacrifice his consistent need to have things his way all the time.

Cami was inconsequential to the narrative and may as well have not been there. She was created to be a moral pet and failed. Caroline was an individual preestablished character that had an effect on Klaus as a person.

What’s your own favorite story of the year? forever yours. it’s basically everything I ever want to happen in a fic. seokjin as an academy award winning actor? jinkook writing a song together? jinkook going on cute dates and continually supporting the other as they fall deeper in love? ugh my heart. the idea is so dear to me and it’s my baby. and even tho bangtan disbanded in the fic, they all found their own success and they’re rly close friends. I fucking love the ending too omg. I did my best to make it rly gratifying and make up for all the stuff jungkook went through earlier. plus I love fics based on idol/band verse, canon/divergence/future fic and I liked weaving in canon elements to it. it makes it feel more real imo.

I wrote the first 1300 words in a waiting room and I was like I don’t have to make this perfect bc it’s stupid fluff but I legit melted writing it. oh and publishing the first chapter of forever yours in two weeks after my first fic. how in the hell did I ever write 9k that quickly I will unfortunately never able to do that again.
