Making Woodland Friends
Tumblr media
If you go down in the woods today…….
Unexpectedly, I found myself with a few minutes to spare earlier this week so I seized my chance to get the daily step count up and took a short woodland walk.
Even on a cold damp November afternoon there was beauty to be found.

and playing in among the trees and fallen leaves

And in a flash he was gone, leaving only the blur of his tail…….

realscotland said: i’m really surprised they kept the old records.. I thought they would have been destroyed or sth..
Nope! We are all in luck because while a large amount of Scottish state records have suffered or been lost completely over the centuries, whether due to the Wars of Independence, later invasion, accident, or Cromwell, at least some of the Crown’s financial records have survived, and though often sparse they are an invaluable resource for historians.
The Treasurer’s Accounts survive to a reasonable extent for James IV’s reign, and that of later monarchs, (though sometimes with huge chunks missing) and even a few bits and pieces survive for the reign of James III. They were edited and printed in the nineteenth century and not only the National Library, but also a reasonable number of university and major public libraries have copies of these printed volumes (which have some errors but still). There’s also a fair few of the volumes on internet archive. They make absolutely fascinating reading, especially the accounts of discharge (in Scots), which not only covers expenditure of the king, queen, and royal court, but also expenditure on things like the royal navy and tournaments and so on. I promise you there are many much more interesting things in there than a bride from Leith, but here’s the source for that particular extract
And the Treasurer’s Accounts aren’t the only thing- the Exchequer Rolls also survive to a reasonable extent, and go back much further than the Treasurer’s Accounts (to the fourteenth century at least but they’re also in Latin not Scots which makes things more difficult for the modern reader), the Registers of the Great and Privy Seals are available too, the Acts of Parliament are online here, and we even have, for a very short period from 1539-1540 during James V’s reign, the Accounts of the King’s Pursemaster, which are much more personal. And there’s others too.
Anyway they’re some of my favourite things to dig through, especially the Treasurer’s Accounts, so sorry for the ramble, but yes,,though they are sparse, we do have these kind of records.

thanks @realscotland !
Perhaps there are people, which are immune to cancer because their immune system knows how to fight it. But we will never know because they never develop cancer to a stage, that’s recognizable.

As a creature of habit, I take the same route when I go for a walk along the shore at Lunderston Bay, a beauty spot near where I live. It’s very easy to allow routine to kick in and to not look around you.
More recently I’ve been using these walks almost as mindfulness sessions, taking the time to myself to clear my mind. I’ve left my iPod at home and focussed on the sounds of the world around me- the seabirds, the waves, the kids laughter as they play on the beach or in the playpark, dogs barking as they too play on the beach or in the water, the sheep in the fields, the wind around me. I’ve paid attention to the ground beneath my feet- the soft sand, the damp hardpacked sand along the water’s edge, the squishy feeling of the seaweed, the gravel of the path. I’ve paid attention to the sights – the small shells and bright white pebbles in the sand, the sun glinting off the water, the wildflowers that grow along the paths.
I wonder how many people visit this spot and see and hear and feel nothing, seeing it purely as place to let the kids or the dog run free?

Sometimes though you need to look at even the most beautiful places from a different perspective….and you can have a little fun whilst doing it.

Honestly, @realscotland there is so much to reply to on your comment, but I'm going to just talk about the first point, and the most glaring thing.
What the literal, actual fuck?! Feminists should "want men and women to be treated equal in EVERYTHING, including shit like this"?? Really?
What feminists want is for predatory behaviour to be fucking eradicated. No more roofies in drinks! We're already pissed about the number of male rape victims, and we do not want them to be more vulnerable! We want men to be less vulnerable, and people of every other fucking gender to be less vulnerable too. The goal is that no one gets roofied, and that no one tries to get someone drunk in order to get into their pants.
Feminists aren't lobbying for equality at the lowest common denominator, we want equality at the highest standards. Sure, maybe we're idealists, but how else do you expect positive change?
Society will have achieved equality when a man can walk into a bar and several women offer to buy him a drink.

@realscotland I don't see the comments you are referring to, but then, I am on the mobile app, and this is Tumblr, so fuck only knows.
As a side point, buying a drink isn't predatory in and of itself, but the story is usually more along the lines of: man offers woman a drink, if she says no, he presses saying "it's only a drink." Creepy ass behaviour in ignoring that first no. Maybe she says yes, and they all have a good time, but what is the man's intentions? Maybe they are good, some are, I'm sure, but often enough that women are afraid in bars, the intention is to get them drunk enough for sex. Or maybe just a quick grope. It's a means to an end. In the extreme cases, the proffered drink is drugged, and what follows is, unquestionably, rape.
So, no, buying a drink isn't predatory, but so many predators use the same tactics, and it leads to very frightened, suspicious, and uneasy women in bars with (often unwanted) free drinks.
As to the other points I disagree with, in (not really) summary, the comparison between men and butch women. Butch women are women. They face the same challenges and inequality as other women. The same goes for the comparison between women and femme men.
Why do we differentiate? Because they are different identities that come with different challenges. But more to the point, they are different identities. Why do we differentiate between lions and tigers? They're both felines. Sure, but they're still very different animals.
That line of reasoning runs incredibly to "I'm not racist, I don't even see color." For one, as was so aptly put by someone who is not me, and I honestly have no idea where this line originated from, but "I've been dragging around this toaster on a leash thinking it's a dog because I don't see defining characteristics."
Race and gender have something in common in that they are both social constructs. In different way, surely, but the point still stands. That said, they have still been constructed, and people use them as integral parts of their identity. To then go and try to take away those things, is to deny people the right to their identity. It's already there, people are discriminated against because of it, we don't get to swoop in and just erase the whole idea so that we won't have to talk about the actual underlying issues and systemic inequality.
This was somewhat rambling, but that's my main point in a very, very large nutshell.
Society will have achieved equality when a man can walk into a bar and several women offer to buy him a drink.
