something that’s been bugging me all day: how would you teach perspective drawing in a society that existed entirely within, say, a varied-gravity spaceship? so much of how we understand perspective is based on the existence of the horizon and our relationship to it. what if there’s no horizon? vanishing points as a concept depend on having a ground to be parallel or perpendicular to.

When I did King Lear with Richard, I didn’t know anything. I knew how to be kind of real on stage. We’ve rehearsed for about a week, and I’m in Richard’s house at a 4th of July barbecue, and I’m going on and on as young men do, just painfully about myself. Kenneth Branagh cast me in Much Ado, I had done Dead Poet Society, I had done The Age of Innocence with Martin Scorsese directing and some play on Broadway I’d done and how great it was. There’s an addiction to being approved of by many, many, many people you don’t know and never will. I was telling Richard about all this and the other people at the party, and he said: “Robert, I don’t know you very well, but I just want you to know something and you may not absorb it right now, but all these things you’re talking about. It’s all shit.” He said: “We sat in a room today and we talked about King Lear for 7 hours, that was your day today. I’m older than you and I’m here to tell you it doesn’t get better than that. You can be on Broadway, and you can know all the famous people you want, but ultimately, you’re going to be dead pretty soon and none of these things are going to matter. The only thing that’s going to matter is how you spent your day.” Obviously, it was quite a bit for a young man in his twenties to hear, but I didn’t need time for that to affect me or to absorb it. It happened at the moment, and I was never the same, ever. If I had never met Richard Easton, it’s possible that I’d be an insufferable, drug addicted, very wealthy, not very good actor in the Hollywood hills right now.

Currently thinking about Artemis's will in the code at the bottom of TLG and how it really kinda shows how strained his relationship with his dad still is. Everyone else gets something they're interested in or that Arty thinks they'd like (sound system for Juliet, frozen chicken for Mulch, ethical investments for his mother, etc) and yet for his father he leaves only bearer bonds, despite Artemis I trying to move away from a money-focused enterprise and lifestyle as of TEC. Not to mention it's Butler who would know how to disengage all the booby traps protecting said bearer bonds, further highlighting the difference in trust & familiarity Artemis has with everyone but his father.

We did it guys! Minthara is in the top 100 most mentioned video game characters on Tumblr, sitting comfortably at rank 55!

With Astarion at rank 1 (cause of course), Gale at 5, Shadowheart at 6, Karlach at 8, Lae'zel at 9, Wyll at 12, Halsin at 16, Tav at 19, Gortash at 47, and The Dark Urge at 67. Baldur's Gate 3 is also the most talked about video game on this platform, as well as the 6th most talked about thing on all of Tumblr!

I wish Minthara was higher, but you know what, I'm happy she's on there at all! It is also interesting that she ranks higher than Durge and that Durge is that low on the list. It's also pretty interesting that there is such a discrepancy between Durge and Gortash as Durgetash is also the 67th most talked about ship on the platform. It is quite an achievement that our favorite drow is even on that list at all.

It is all just making me think back to some of the more dejecting AO3 statistics with Minthara almost being a blip, practically a statistical outlier in some ways. Even some insignificant side characters got more attention and adoration than her, or had numbers that would compare to her. But Tumblr is a much bigger platform than AO3, containing a much wider array of topics (including fanfics). So for Baldur's Gate 3 and Minthara to stand out that much is really saying something! Reading these statistics on Tumblr does go to show that one platform does not represent the entire fandom and that AO3 is only a piece of the picture.
