Album review: “Beyond The Marrow Gates” by Ineffable Demise

A blistering maelstrom of blast beats, irreverent slam riffs, and inhuman gutturals, Ineffable Demise’s debut full length Beyond The Marrow Gates is a veritable treasure trove for fans of in your face, no holds barred slamming brutal death metal. Consisting of members and former members from Delusional Parasitosis, Iniquitous Deeds, Scatorgy, and more, Ineffable Demise is a slam supergroup and all it takes is listening to the intro track to immediately notice the wealth of talent the individual members bring to the table.

           Eschewing the often trite nomenclature all too prevalent in brutal subgenres, Ineffable Demise keep things simple with single word names for all but the interlude track - including the aptly named “Pummel” - and instead put most of their time into the effortlessly controlled chaos of the riffing throughout this album. While the guitar tone on this album is perfectly suited for the multitudinous punchy slam riffs throughout this album’s runtime, the ultra deep, visceral approach does mean that some of the faster and more technical guitar riffs blend together into a wall of sound most evident in the guitar solo near the end of the aforementioned track. Given the lack of clarity, new fans and listeners may find themselves taken aback. One of the most admirable qualities of the mixing of this album, however, is managing to not only not lose the bass guitar into the background (as is the case on many, many similar releases) but to have it clearly present, letting it perfectly serve its role of reinforcing and filling out the plethora of beefy chugging strewn throughout.

In a front to back playthrough of this album, as with a large majority of music in this vein, individual tracks often aren’t quite diverse enough to stand out individually and start to really blend together, but, at a lean twenty six and a half minutes, Beyond The Marrow Gates certainly doesn’t overstay its welcome. As much a fan of the raging inferno of blasting, slamming, and gurgling that much of this album provides, I must say that the true standout track on this album is actually the final, “Abolition.” An instrumental, and the album’s longest track, Ineffable Demise and guitarist Tom Allott take their time and develop an absolute monolith of a cut that really lets his and drummer Roman Tyutin’s genius shine and features many of what I consider the best riffs and moments on the entire album. I would be remiss to not also commend the always stellar, always disgusting vocal performance by James Shuster, who continually proves that he is among the best to ever pick up a microphone.

           In summation, Beyond The Marrow Gates is akin to daring a friend to kick you in the balls with no restraint. Short, memorable, and likely to leave a long lasting impression.
